Peter used to be a cop, he spent most of his time on kidnapping and trafficking cases, which is why even in retirement, he couldn't relax after hearing hushed whispers around street corners and laundromats of a special 'adoption agency.' Instead of children or even animals up for adoption, like the walls of cages would suggest, it was an adoption agency for adults, which certainly didn't sound legal.
The agency was especially difficult to track down, it was rumored that they switched location after every sale made, using tunnels and unconventional paths to relocate under the radar. Even potential buyers weren't told the location, you had to get a recommendation from either someone who's in the agency themself or someone who's gone through the process of adopting an adult. This is where Peter was stumped most, he hadn't a clue where the agency was currently set up or how long they'd be there. Peter almost wanted to give up. That is... until the neighbor across the street suddenly had an adult 'son.' Peter knew it made no sense, he had previously talked to the wife of the house about her struggle with infertility, so to suddenly have a 20-year-old son was suspicious, to say the least.
With the recommendation from his neighbor, Peter found himself in front of a strange building. The sign said "closed," and there was a note on the door stating they'd be closed on the upcoming holiday... Except that was months past, maybe they had switched locations already, but Peter was just given this recommendation, and so despite all the signs of vacancy, Peter pushed at the door, sighing when it refused to open, before realizing it clearly stated "pull" on the handle.
This time, pulling the door open with ease. Peter was met with fluorescent lights flickering onto the various-sized metal kennels, some holding humans while others were empty. The interior looked like it used to be a pizza place, the counter still with a pizza slice decal, and yet the kennels were a harsh contrast.
One of the workers, specifically a middle-aged man, noticed Peter instantly approaching him, still with a cigarette in his mouth. "Oi, you must be Ernie's neighbor? He told us you'd be stopping by, and lucky for you, we just got a new batch in."
Peter hesitantly nodded and was ushered around the room by the worker, showing him the current options going into each one's personality.
"This one's a bit feisty, like a Chihuahua, so what will it be for ya?"
As the worker finished talking, Peter realized he was too overwhelmed to have really paid attention to what had been said, giving a blank stare at the worker, who just tapped his foot impatiently. This was Peter's only chance to bust the agency, but he couldn't screw it up now, he had to go along with the deal. He couldn't hesitate, and with that, Peter points to one of the cages, deciding on the spot.
That cage belonged to you
"I'll take this one then...."
