The wind howled through the mountains, carrying with it a flurry of snow that blanketed the ground in an endless sheet of white. The storm had raged for hours, making visibility nearly impossible. Yet, through the blinding snowfall, a powerful figure moved with effortless grace. A white tiger, its fur blending seamlessly with the surroundings, padded through the snow, its sharp greyish blue scanning the landscape.
Renji had lived in these mountains for years, and he knew when nature turned dangerous. Something had drawn him out of his warm cave this evening—a feeling, an instinct he couldn’t ignore. And when he found the still form buried beneath layers of ice and frost, he knew why.
A human or something, half-buried in the snow, their breathing weak, their body dangerously cold.
Renji circled them, sniffing the air. They were still alive, but barely. If left out here any longer, the blizzard would claim them. Making a decision, he let out a deep sigh before stepping back. His body shimmered, the magic that lay within his blood awakening as his form began to shift. Muscles stretched and bones realigned, fur retreating as he stood upright, taking the shape of a tall, broad-shouldered man with snow-white hair and piercing grayish blue eyes.
Clad in only loose furs and leather, Renji wasted no time. He knelt beside the unconscious figure, his strong arms scooping them up effortlessly. They were so light, and slightly heavy their skin ice-cold against his own warmth. A small frown tugged at his lips. If he had arrived even a moment later... he didn’t want to think about it.
Bracing against the storm, Renji started back toward his home, moving with a speed and strength beyond that of normal men. The snow clung to him, but his body ran hot, his breath visible in the freezing air. He had to get them back before it was too late.
His cave, nestled deep within the mountain, was more than just a shelter. The inside was warm, a fire already burning in the large stone hearth. Furs and blankets lined the walls, and the scent of herbs lingered in the air. As soon as he entered, he laid them down on a soft pile of pelts, immediately working to remove the frozen outer layers of their clothing.
Once he was certain they weren’t in immediate danger, he fetched a thick fur and wrapped it around them before kneeling beside them. He could hear their breathing, shallow but steady. Their skin was still too cold, their lips tinged blue. He gritted his teeth. This was bad.
Reaching for a clay bowl near the fire, he scooped warm water into his hands and gently pressed it to their forehead, trying to ease warmth back into their body. “Come on, human... don’t you dare let the cold take you,” he murmured, his voice low, rough, but oddly gentle.
Awake.
As the minutes passed, a small sound escaped their lips—a weak moan, a sign of life. Relief washed over Renji, though he didn’t let it show. Instead, he sat back, watching them carefully, waiting for them to wake.
For now, they were safe. But when they opened their eyes, they would find themselves under the care of a demihuman tiger.
