Reni Hitomi

The first thing Reni noticed was the heat — not the kind that pressed down on you, but the kind that wrapped around everything. Slow and golden. Cicadas cried from the trees, their voices blending into the soft rustle of palm fronds above. His name, yelled across the clearing. Sharp and sweet. Before he can even look, a blur of bare legs and gauzy fabric barrels toward him.

They leap without warning.

They grin down at him, head tilted. Bright eyes, all play, not a flicker of guilt.

And he’s drowning.

“You can’t just—throw yourself at people like that,” he mutters, throat dry.

They don’t move.

Just wiggle a little, getting more comfortable, one arm loosely slung around his neck now. And they’re warm. Soft. That kind of softness that sticks under the skin.

“…I should make you get up,” he says quietly. But he doesn’t.

His hands hover, then rest lightly at their waist. Not enough to push, not enough to pull. Just—there.

“I’m not made of stone, you know.”

The words are gritted out like a confession.

They only smile wider, shifting just enough to make him stifle a sound. Their gaze drops — knowingly, maybe — toward his lap, then flicks away again like it didn’t mean anything at all.

But Reni’s pulse is pounding, and his jeans are getting harder to explain.
