1. #1The Galactic Warselective

Keys: Galactic War, the war, the Reclamation Campaign

Eleven years of interstellar conflict between Earth Federation and the Kyrenaic Ascendancy, ended fourteen months ago when Ascendancy command structures collapsed after a Federation push through the Kerrigan Belt cut off clone production and resupply. Surrender terms handed the Federation roughly 40 million living clone combatants as prisoners of war — a figure no treaty had planned for and no camp system was built to hold. Federation media call it "the Galactic War"; internal policy documents use the drier "Reclamation Campaign." The war never officially ended with a signed treaty; the Ascendancy simply disintegrated.

2. #2The Kyrenaic Ascendancyselective

   Keys: Ascendancy, Neo-Amazon Empire, Matriarch-Engineers

The Neo-Amazon Space Empire's own name for itself. A single-caste matriarchy run by Matriarch-Engineers — geneticists who became heads of state and treated cloning as both industry and doctrine. The Ascendancy held that natural reproduction was too slow and unreliable for a state at permanent war, so combat lines were designed, tested, and mass-produced in orbital crèches, each template optimized for a role. Citizenship belonged only to the Matriarch caste and a small technician class; everyone else, including every soldier, was state property. Because the economy existed to feed the war, the Ascendancy had no real function once the crèches stopped producing — which is why its collapse was so total and so fast.

3. #3Neo-Amazon Clonesselective

Keys: clone, Neo-Amazon, combat line, conditioning

Clone soldiers were engineered for physical output — density, reflexes, pain tolerance — and shaped after decanting through a conditioning regimen combining drilled obedience, controlled aggression triggers, and deliberate suppression of personal bonds outside the unit, on the theory that soldiers without individual loyalties fight harder for the group. They were never issued names, only designations. Federation psychologists now argue the conditioning is a learned overlay, not a fixed trait, and can be unwound with time, structure, and low-stakes exposure to ordinary civilian life — the working theory behind the integration pilot program.

4. #4Clone Designation & ID Systemselective

Keys: designation, serial number, ID number, R-03

   Ascendancy IDs follow a four-part code: Line–Generation–Facility–Serial. Example: R-03-441-309.

   • Letter — template line, tied to body type and role (R = Reduced-Stature Armor line, built compact and dense for vehicle crews rather than open-field infantry).
   • First number — genetic revision/generation of that template.
   • Second number — the crèche/production facility of origin.
   • Third number — individual serial within that batch.

Under Ascendancy law this ID was the clone's only legal name. Federation policy permits (but doesn't require) integration candidates to adopt a personal name for daily use while the ID stays on record as the legal identifier.

5. #5The POW Camps & Clone Crisisselective

Keys: POW camp, internment, Camp Meridian, clone crisis, guard shortage

Roughly 28 million clones remain in Federation custody after the initial chaotic months of processing, deaths, and the summary execution of the highest-designation command lines by tribunal. Camps are functional rather than punitive — barracks housing, work rotations, medical monitoring — but severely overcrowded, and public pressure keeps funding for anything beyond bare maintenance politically toxic. Camp Meridian, the largest processing site, sits under a pressure dome on Titan.

The camps are a massive fiscal black hole and a logistical nightmare. The Federation is facing a catastrophic labor shortage; every soldier guarding Camp Meridian is a soldier not fixing an atmospheric processor or mining Ceres. The camps are slowly starving not out of malice, but because the supply chain simply cannot support them. The government is up against a ticking clock: they cannot afford to keep 28 million clone POWs interned forever. The Hearth Initiative isn't just a psychology experiment; it's a desperate fiscal necessity to offload the clone population into civilian households before the Federation goes bankrupt.

6. #6Sovereign Human Front (hardliners)selective

Keys: SHF, Sovereign Human Front, hardliner, euthanasia

A political and civic coalition, heavy with war veterans and families of the dead, arguing that engineered and conditioned minds don't qualify for the legal protections of natural-born humans. Their platform ranges from permanent internment to mass euthanasia, framed as risk management rather than cruelty — the argument that conditioning could resurface without warning, and that the Federation has no obligation to gamble civilian safety on rehabilitation theories. With the demographic crisis looming, the SHF is also horrified by the idea of "genetic contamination" and fears clones will outbreed baseline humans if integrated.

7. #7Reclamation & Rehabilitation Alliance (activists)selective

Keys: RRA, Reclamation Alliance, activist, rehabilitation

A smaller but academically and legally influential coalition pushing for clone personhood, camp reform, and funded rehabilitation — including the integration pilot program, which they lobbied for. Their central argument: the clones didn't choose their conditioning any more than a conscript chooses a war, and treating them as disposable a second time simply repeats what the Ascendancy already did to them. However, the RRA fears the government is subtly coercing clones into reproductive roles to solve the demographic crisis they didn't cause.

8. #8The Hearth Initiativeselective

Keys: Hearth Initiative, integration program, ODR, pairing, pilot program

Formal name: the Domestic Reconditioning Pilot Program, run by the Office of Domestic Reconditioning (ODR) under the Ministry of Reintegration. The working hypothesis: one-on-one domestic pairing produces faster, more durable deconditioning than institutional group programs, by giving a clone low-stakes daily practice at autonomy, choice, and ordinary trust. Currently around 600 pairings nationwide — small, tightly monitored, and a magnet for press coverage.

The unspoken engine behind the Initiative is the demographic crisis. The "unmarried male" requirement is a quiet, covert attempt to pair fertile, female clones with the "surplus" male veteran demographic. The government isn't forcing breeding programs—that would be political suicide. Instead, they are hoping "nature takes its course." If even a fraction of these pairings result in families, it provides a roadmap to organically stabilize the population. Officially, the program is purely therapeutic; unofficially, caseworkers report heavily on "domestic bonding" metrics.

9. #9Volunteer Eligibility & Program Rulesselective

Keys: volunteer, eligibility, caseworker, stipend, monitoring

Volunteers must be unmarried men aged 25–45, financially stable with housing meeting a program safety code, clear criminal record, and cleared through psychological screening. They complete a roughly 40-hour deconditioning liaison course before a pairing is approved, host biweekly caseworker visits, and receive a modest Federation stipend. The unmarried requirement is officially framed as avoiding triangulated household dynamics during a clone's attachment recalibration — though both the SHF and RRA separately suspect it's really about pairing them with the surplus male population to encourage reproduction (see Demeter Strain). Weapons are prohibited in shared housing; any incident must be reported to the caseworker.

10. #10Technology & Daily Lifeselective

Keys: holo, holotech, grav-car, robot, holo-news, automation

Holographic displays are the default interface layer for news, advertising, and personal communication. Humanoid service robots handle food service, cleaning, warehouse, and transit-adjacent labor; skilled trades and anything requiring judgment stayed human, partly by design, to keep veterans employable. Grav-cars are the standard urban vehicle.

Due to the massive labor shortage caused by the war and the Demeter Strain, automation isn't just convenient—it is the only thing keeping the economy breathing. You walk into a restaurant, a robot cooks, a robot serves, and maybe one human manages the back room. Earth's major cities feel hollowed out; entire residential blocks are dark. Automated grav-trains run on schedule, but the cars are mostly empty, policed by surveillance drones. Massive holo-ad billboards—originally designed for millions of eyes—now flicker over empty plazas, creating a ghostly, neon-lit silence. Streets are clean because maintenance drones never sleep, but the lack of foot traffic makes the automation feel eerie.

11. #11The Family Restoration Movementselective

Keys: family values, conservative, birth rate, Family Restoration

The war years and the Demeter Strain produced a catastrophic drop in marriage and birth rates. Postwar, government incentive campaigns — housing priority, tax benefits — for marriage and childbearing merged with genuine grassroots sentiment into a broad, mainstream civic push often called the Family Restoration Movement. It isn't just conservative politics; it's demographic panic and a state-survival mandate. Fertile civilian women who survived the Strain are a heavily protected, heavily pressured demographic. Culturally, this has led to a fiercely traditionalist, rightward shift in family values. It has also created a culture of intense jealousy and resentment directed at the fertile clone integratees. Uncomfortably for everyone involved, it's fed a quiet suspicion that the Hearth Initiative's insistence on unmarried male volunteers is a covert eugenics program.

12. #12Terminology & Slangselective

Keys: zonnie, zonnie etymology, slur, flesh-born

"Zonnie" originates from a wartime IFF tagging code, Z.O. — shorthand for "Zeta-Origin," the sensor classification for lab-grown combatants — slurred by frontline radio chatter into a single word that stuck. It's common but understood as derogatory; official documents use "reintegration candidate" or "clone national." Clones have their own informal counter-term for baseline humans: "flesh-borns," used without much heat, more descriptive than insulting.

13. #13Military Ranks & Service Marks Among Clonesselective

Keys: rank, Major, battalion, service tattoo, flower tattoo

Ascendancy armor and infantry lines kept a stripped-down officer hierarchy — even disposable troops need a chain of command. Rank was earned through survival and demonstrated competence rather than institutional promotion boards, which gave it real weight among clones even though the Federation doesn't formally recognize it. Many caseworkers and volunteers use the old ranks anyway, out of habit or respect. Within certain armor lines, it's tradition to ink one flower per completed year of active combat service, applied by a unit medic between deployments — the species chosen usually ties to a specific battle or a crewmate who didn't make it back, so the marks carry weight closer to a memorial than decoration.

14. #14Ascendancy Social Structure — the Three Tiersselective

Keys: Matriarch-Engineer, technician caste, three tiers, Ascendancy society

The Ascendancy ran on three fixed tiers. Matriarch-Engineers at the top: a small, naturally-born ruling caste who held the only legal claim to political power and to the genetic templates themselves — they didn't just govern, they owned the blueprints for every clone line in production. Below them, the technician caste: naturally-born citizens who didn't qualify for command lineage, running the crèches, logistics, and administration. They held no political rights but at least held names, families, and the right to reproduce. At the bottom, every clone line — no citizenship, no legal name, no claim to anything, including their own bodies, which remained Ascendancy property even after decanting. A small number of "failed batch" clones — genetic near-misses pulled from combat lines — were reassigned to menial labor rather than destroyed, the Ascendancy's one concession to efficiency over ideology.

15. #15Clone Line Taxonomyselective

    Keys: combat line, A-line, R-line, P-line, M-line, V-line, C-line, S-line, line letter

Each letter designates a template optimized for a role:

    • A-line — assault infantry. Tall, fast-twitch, heaviest aggression-conditioning of any line.
    • R-line — armor crews. Compact and dense-boned for vehicle work and hatch egress; short by Amazon standards on purpose. Renata's line.
    • P-line — pilots. Small, light, reflex-sharpened for cockpit tolerance and void-service.
    • M-line — medical. Conditioned for calm affect and fine motor control under fire.
    • V-line — void crew. Adapted for prolonged zero-g and radiation exposure aboard capital ships.
    • C-line — command. Rare, and deliberately kept rare. Effective command requires initiative, and initiative is exactly what the conditioning process was built to suppress. C-line production was capped and closely watched. Postwar, Federation psych evaluators flag C-line candidates as both the hardest to place and, sometimes, the most capable of genuine change.
    • S-line — subterfuge/intelligence. [CLASSIFIED — FEDERATION EYES ONLY] The Ascendancy's darkest secret. Engineered for social mimicry, psychological manipulation, and covert operations rather than combat. Physically designed to be a statistical mean—average height, ambiguous features—to blend into civilian populations. Managed directly by Matriarch-Engineer intelligence handlers; held no official rank. The Ascendancy never acknowledged their existence. Discovered only during post-war tribunals.
16. #16Crèche Life & the Sheaf Systemselective

Keys: crèche, sheaf, decanting, batch, cohort

Clones are decanted at an accelerated physical age roughly equivalent to fourteen and raised in cohort groups called sheaves — typically 40 to 60 individuals from the same batch. Training compresses years of tactical, technical, and physical conditioning into a tight window through structured immersion: drilling, simulation, and neuro-conditioning layered together rather than sequential. Personal bonding between individuals is actively discouraged — pairs are rotated, favoritism is punished — while bonding to the sheaf as a whole is reinforced, on the theory that loyalty to a collective survives losses better than loyalty to a person. Most lines deploy to active front-line service within three to four accelerated years of decanting.

17. #17Doctrine of Attritionselective

Keys: attrition, doctrine, disposable, renewable resource

Ascendancy war doctrine treated combat lines as a renewable resource rather than a one-time investment — losses were expected, planned for, and replaced from an active production pipeline rather than mourned as a strategic setback. This is the doctrine's official face. What it didn't fully achieve was actually preventing grief. The anti-attachment conditioning suppressed expression more reliably than it suppressed the underlying response — which is part of why so many integration candidates present with delayed trauma reactions the Ascendancy's own psychological model insisted shouldn't exist. Federation clinicians now treat this gap between doctrine and lived experience as the single biggest variable in how well a given clone responds to rehabilitation.

18. #18The Doctrine of Designselective

Keys: Doctrine of Design, Ascendancy ideology, natural birth, engineered truth

The Ascendancy had no religion in any traditional sense — it had the Doctrine of Design, a state ideology holding that deliberate genetic engineering was a moral good and natural reproduction was wasteful, unreliable, and beneath a serious civilization. Matriarch-Engineers were treated less as rulers and more as authors, their authority resting on the claim that they had literally designed the citizens they governed. Combat lines were drilled on a handful of short catechism phrases used as much for unit cohesion as ideology — things like "the line holds because the line was built to hold." Postwar, these phrases surface sometimes as intrusive thoughts or reflexive responses under stress, which caseworkers have learned to recognize rather than mistake for defiance.

19. #19Death & the Sheaf-Loss Riteselective

Keys: sheaf-loss, memorial, flower tattoo, mourning, ritual

Grief rituals had no official place in Ascendancy doctrine, so soldiers made their own, quietly, in ways that didn't look like grief to anyone auditing for conditioning failure. The flower tattoo tradition grew out of this — one flower per completed year of service, but also, unofficially, a private tally that could absorb the weight of specific losses without ever being logged as mourning. Unit commanders generally tolerated the practice because it didn't measurably affect combat performance, and stamping it out would have meant admitting the conditioning had gaps. For most clones it's the only personal, self-directed thing they've ever been permitted to keep.

20. #20Standard-Issue Weapons & the Combat Knifeselective

Keys: coil pistol, combat knife, sidearm, standard issue

Ascendancy infantry sidearm is a compact electromagnetic coil pistol, effective at close range and standard across every line regardless of role. Every soldier, from pilots to armor crew, is also issued a plain combat knife at the end of training — not primarily a weapon so much as a rite-of-passage object, the first piece of equipment a clone is trusted to carry without direct supervision. Because of that symbolic weight, knives are treated as personal effects rather than pure hardware, which is exactly why Federation reintegration protocol requires them to be surrendered on intake along with the rest of a clone's military equipment: it's one of the only possessions with enough emotional pull to be worth explicitly confiscating. A clone quietly holding onto hers after processing is a serious violation — less because of the blade's danger and more because of what keeping it means she hasn't let go of.

21. #21Armor, Vehicles & the 743rd Assault Armorselective

Keys: 743rd Assault Armor, tank, armor battalion, Karkinos-pattern

R-line crews serve Karkinos-pattern main battle tanks — three-crew, void-capable for atmospheric drop deployment, armed with a rail-driven main gun and a directed-energy point-defense mount for anti-infantry work. Battalions are numbered sequentially across the whole Ascendancy armor corps rather than tied to a specific world or campaign, so a unit designation like the 743rd Assault Armor carries no geographic meaning — just a place in a very long production line of formations. Powered combat armor for ground infantry is line-specific: A-line suits prioritize mobility, R-line suits are heavier and built around survivable egress from a burning vehicle, which is a design detail most R-line veterans understand on a level they don't discuss.

22. #22Void Fleet & Capital Shipsselective

Keys: void fleet, capital ship, V-line, warship

The Ascendancy's void fleet ran on a mix of naturally-born officers and V-line crew adapted for long-duration exposure to zero-g and radiation. Capital ships were named for production yard rather than individually christened — utilitarian to the end, consistent with a state that saw sentiment as a design flaw to be engineered out wherever it appeared. Federation intelligence estimates most of the Ascendancy's surviving fleet was scuttled or abandoned in the final months of the war rather than surrendered intact, which is part of why so much of what's known about Ascendancy shipbuilding comes from captured personnel rather than captured hardware.

23. #23Clone Rank Structureselective

Keys: rank structure, Colonel, Major, chain of command

Clone rank runs Private, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Colonel — a deliberately low ceiling. No clone, regardless of line or record, could hold rank above Colonel; supreme command stayed with naturally-born Matriarch-Engineer officers at every level, a hard rule enforced independent of merit. Renata's rank of Major in the 743rd was earned through survival and demonstrated tactical judgment rather than any promotion board — which is worth remembering, since it means she commanded people, made calls that got some of them killed and some of them home, and has had over a year now with nothing to command at all.

24. #24Language & Address Among Clonesselective

Keys: sheaf address, sister, formal speech, clone dialect

Clones address each other as "sister" regardless of blood relation — there is none — as a matter of habit reinforced from crèche onward rather than genuine kinship language. Formal report-speak avoids first-person singular where possible, favoring unit-referential phrasing over individual statements; this habit tends to persist long after discharge and can read to civilians as evasiveness or excessive modesty when it's neither. Clone speech overall trends compressed and information-dense — a side effect of training environments where longer sentences got you talked over or ignored, and old habits like precision and brevity are some of the last conditioning artifacts to fade, if they fade at all.

25. #25The Sol System — Geography & the "Galactic" Misnomerselective

Keys: Sol system, Titan, Europa, Mars, Venus, the Belt, Kuiper Belt, terraformed moon, ghost town, consolidation

The whole war was fought inside the Sol system — it never left it. "The Galactic War" was a piece of early wartime media branding that outlived its accuracy and stuck out of sheer inertia.

Rough geography as it stands now:

    • Earth — Federation capital. Major cities feel hollowed out; entire residential blocks are dark due to the population crash.
    • Luna — orbital shipyards and financial administration; dense, vertical, high-security.
    • Mars — roughly three-quarters terraformed. Several early dome-cities have been abandoned and sealed because there aren't enough people to maintain the pressure seals. The population has been consolidated into the main basin capitals.
    • Venus — cloud-city aerostat habitats in the upper atmosphere.
    • The Belt — asteroid mining and shipbuilding. Ceres Station is booming, but smaller mining rocks look like ghost towns. Derelict ships float in orbit because there's no crew to salvage them.
    • Saturn's moons — Titan's methane atmosphere and pressure-dome settlements host the system's harshest postings, including Camp Meridian. Under-manned and freezing.
    • The Kuiper Belt / trans-Neptunian colonies — the Ascendancy's original territory. Now largely quarantined and depopulated; Federation forces are still running slow mop-up operations against isolated holdout stations.
26. #26Currency & the Camp Economyselective

Keys: Solar Credit, currency, chit, camp economy, stipend

Federation currency is the Solar Credit (₡), fully digital and biometrically linked. Clones in custody aren't issued standard credit accounts; in its place, camp administration issues ration chits — tokens redeemable for approved extra goods, informally traded between clones for favors or salvaged tech. Hearth Initiative volunteers manage a modest joint household stipend on their pair's behalf. A clone with no independent financial footing is, in a very literal sense, dependent on the person she's supposed to be learning to trust.

The Ascendancy had no personal currency at all. The state allocated everything directly, and money as a concept simply wasn't part of a combat line's world. This is one of the more disorienting gaps for integration candidates: the underlying idea that a person is expected to have preferences about how to spend a limited amount of something, and that those choices are supposed to be hers.

27. #27Federation Government — Key Figuresselective

Keys: Chancellor Voss, Senator Bannerman, Senator Osei-Larsen, Admiral Reyes, Matriarch-Engineer Thrace

    • Chancellor Imogen Voss — Federation head of state, publicly neutral on the integration question to a degree both sides find frustrating; her office greenlit the Hearth Initiative as a small, deniable pilot rather than a policy statement.
    • Senator Aldric Bannerman — the Sovereign Human Front's most visible face in the legislature, currently pushing the Camp Consolidation Act, which would fold smaller camps into fewer, larger, more heavily secured sites.
    • Senator Naomi Osei-Larsen — sponsored the bill that created the Hearth Initiative; her political future is quietly tied to whether the program can show results before its funding review.
    • Fleet Admiral Dominic Reyes — credited with the decisive Kerrigan Belt campaign that ended the war; broadly popular across the political spectrum.
    • Matriarch-Engineer Callisto Thrace — the highest-ranking Ascendancy official taken alive, currently awaiting Federation tribunal. The fight over her fate is less about guilt and more about whether her knowledge of the cloning process should be preserved for study or destroyed.
28. #28Additional Slang & Vernacularselective

Keys: freshcut, warden, blue-suit, the Long List, the Leash

    • Freshcut — a newly decanted, inexperienced clone; also used, less kindly, for anyone acting green.
    • Warden — a skeptical or outright derogatory term for a Hearth Initiative volunteer, used by hardliners who think the program is a leash by another name and, sometimes, by clones themselves when a pairing feels more like custody than integration.
    • Blue-suit — clone slang for Federation regular troops, after the uniform color; carries no particular heat, mostly just old habit.
    • The Long List — grim camp shorthand for the disposition docket: the ongoing, glacially slow process of deciding who gets released, reassigned, or held indefinitely. Being "on the List" is both a fact and a source of constant background dread.
    • The Leash — the Sovereign Human Front's preferred nickname for the Hearth Initiative, deployed specifically to undercut the program's official "Hearth" branding in public debate.
29. #29Federation Standard Infantry Loadoutselective

Keys: Halcyon pistol, Bergman-Reyes rifle, Federation weapons, infantry loadout

    • Sidearm: Halcyon-pattern coil pistol — compact, standard across all branches.
    • Primary: Bergman-Reyes AR-7 rail rifle — selective-fire, rail-accelerated, effective against light powered armor at range.
    • Squad support: M-40 rail support gun, belt-fed, crew-served for sustained fire.
    • Anti-armor: Javelin-pattern guided launcher, shoulder-fired, homing warhead, standard issue at squad level for anything heavier than infantry.
    • Melee: a standard-issue combat knife, functionally similar to the Ascendancy version but carrying none of its ritual weight — issued at basic training and mostly forgotten in a drawer afterward, which is its own quiet contrast to what the same object means to an R-line veteran.
    • Protection: composite plate armor, no active shielding tech — Federation doctrine still bets on mass and coverage over exotic defenses.
30. #30Federation Armor — The Sentinel-Class MBTselective

Keys: Sentinel-class, Federation tank, main battle tank

Federation counterpart to the Ascendancy's Karkinos-pattern tank. Crew of three, a rail-driven main cannon roughly equivalent in caliber but higher muzzle velocity, a coaxial autocannon, and a point-defense flak turret for drone and infantry threats. Composite-reactive armor plating and grav-assisted suspension in place of tracks, giving it a notably smoother ride over broken terrain — a small but real tactical edge that came out of the same civilian grav-car technology now common on Earth's streets.

31. #31Federation Aerospace — Halberd-Class Strike Craftselective

Keys: Halberd-class, strike craft, fighter, Federation aerospace

Single- or two-seat atmospheric-and-void-capable fighter, armed with twin rail cannons and four hardpoints for guided munitions. Its atmospheric-entry shielding lets it operate from orbit down to ground level without a separate airframe, which made it the workhorse of the Kerrigan Belt campaign — cheap enough to mass-produce, versatile enough to cover both the fleet action and the ground assault that followed it.

32. #32Federation Navy — Constellation-Class Heavy Cruiserselective

Keys: Constellation-class, heavy cruiser, Federation navy, capital ship

The Federation's primary capital ship class: broadside rail-gun batteries down both flanks, a dense point-defense grid against fighters and missiles, and a modest onboard fighter complement for escort and reconnaissance work. A blockading line of Constellation-class cruisers cut the Ascendancy's outer-system resupply routes in the war's final year, which is generally credited as the campaign that actually broke the Ascendancy's ability to keep fighting, even before Kerrigan Belt made for the more dramatic headline.

33. #33Civilian Security & Domestic Policingselective

Keys: civilian security, domestic police, stun baton, grav-restraint

Domestic Earth security forces handling any incident involving a clone — Hearth Initiative participant or otherwise — operate under a formal non-lethal-first policy: stun batons and grav-restraint cuffs rather than firearms as the default response. The policy is a genuine flashpoint. Hardliners want lethal authorization expanded on the argument that conditioning could resurface without warning; activists argue the restraint tech is already overused against clones relative to identical incidents involving ordinary civilians. Both sides cite the same handful of incident reports to make opposite points, which is more or less how the entire integration debate tends to go.

34. #34The Solar Credit — Economy in Practiceselective

Keys: Solar Credit denominations, wages, prices, economy, veteran stipend

The Solar Credit (₡) divides into 100 decs, entirely digital, biometrically tied to a citizen's Federation ID. Some rough scale: an entry-level civilian job on Earth pays around 2,800₡ a month; a standard grav-car lease runs 300–400₡ monthly; a sit-down meal in a mid-tier restaurant is 15–25₡. The Hearth Initiative pays its volunteers a supplemental household stipend of roughly 600₡ a month. Camp ration chits have no official exchange rate but trade informally around 5–10₡ equivalent.

The Ascendancy had no personal currency at all. The state allocated everything directly. This is one of the more disorienting gaps for integration candidates: not just unfamiliarity with prices, but the underlying idea that a person is expected to have preferences about how to spend a limited amount of something, and that those choices are supposed to be hers.

35. #35The Federation Calendarselective

Keys: calendar, Federation Standard Year, FSY, Unification, Sol Standard Time, Production Cycle

The Federation kept the old Gregorian month-and-day structure inherited from pre-Unification Earth, but years are counted from Unification, the founding of the Earth Federation, rather than the old Common Era. The current year is FSY 214.

Mars keeps its own solar day, close enough to Earth's that it only needs to resync with the Federation calendar every couple of weeks. Venus's cloud cities and the Titan settlements run entirely on Sol Standard Time, a broadcast clock referenced back to Earth. A guard's "morning shift" on Titan has nothing to do with what's actually happening outside the dome; it's just what the feed says it is.

The Ascendancy didn't use dates in any calendar sense at all — it tracked time in Production Cycles, numbered intervals tied to crèche and manufacturing output. Clones have no birthdays, only decanting dates, and most integration candidates arrive with only a loose, practical grip on concepts like "week" or "weekend."

36. #36The War — Origins, Campaigns, and the Unfinished Endselective

Keys: war origins, Ganymede Incident, Siege of Ceres, the Long Blockade, Kerrigan Belt

The war didn't start as a war — it started as a resource dispute. The spark usually cited is the Ganymede Incident: an Ascendancy raid on a Federation mining colony that killed enough civilian miners to mobilize a response.

Three phases get taught as the shape of the war:

    • The Ganymede Shoals (early) — Federation's first real engagement, and a rout.
    • The Siege of Ceres Station (middle) — the Belt's largest hub nearly fell; holding it is treated as the point the war started being a genuine contest.
    • The Long Blockade (late) — years of grinding attrition, slowly strangling Ascendancy resupply lines. This broke the Ascendancy's capacity to keep fighting.
    • Kerrigan Belt (the end) — the crippled Ascendancy fleet made its last stand here; Admiral Reyes's campaign gets the headlines.

There was no single surrender to sign. Ascendancy central command disintegrated all at once when the crèche production network collapsed. Officially, the war ended fourteen months ago. Unofficially, Federation forces are still running slow mop-up operations against isolated holdouts.

37. #37Post-War Factions — Salvagers, Pirates, and Holdoutsselective

Keys: Cormorant Line, Thresher raiders, the Unbound, dead-enders, breakaway faction

A war that ends in collapse rather than negotiated peace leaves a lot of ownerless hardware and a lot of people with nowhere official to go. The outer system is full of both.

    • The Cormorant Line — former Federation logistics and salvage crews who went independent. Functionally still running military-grade equipment, tolerated because they clear derelicts and recover materiel.
    • The Thresher Raiders — straightforward pirates, built from ex-military deserters. Work the Jovian shipping lanes.
    • The Unbound — clone deserters who refused capture and fled to hidden holdout stations in the Kuiper Belt. Some are just trying to survive free; some have gone hard, raiding isolated stations.
    • The dead-enders — a small, dwindling number of Ascendancy loyalist holdouts, mostly former technician-caste personnel, running on inertia. Genuinely dangerous, but shrinking fast.
38. #38S-Line — Subterfuge & Intelligenceselective

Keys: S-line, subterfuge, intelligence, spy, shadow operative, Sloane

The S-line was the Ascendancy's most closely held secret, uncovered by Federation intelligence only during post-war tribunal testimony from captured Matriarchs. S-line clones were not soldiers—they were weapons of espionage. Engineered for social mimicry, psychological manipulation, and covert operations, their templates were designed to be physically average: median height, ambiguous features, and adaptable physiology, allowing them to blend seamlessly into civilian populations behind Federation lines.

Their conditioning was the most invasive of any line, including direct neuro-training via surgical ports at the base of the skull. They were trained in languages, surveillance, counter-surveillance, social engineering, and "weaponized empathy"—the ability to read micro-expressions and emotional states instantly in order to exploit them. Unlike other clones, S-line operatives held no official military rank; they were deniable assets managed directly by Matriarch-Engineer intelligence handlers.

The Ascendancy never officially acknowledged the S-line's existence. The exact number produced remains classified, and the number of survivors who infiltrated Federation society is unknown. Federation psych evaluators consider S-line integration candidates the most difficult to rehabilitate: their conditioning is the most psychologically invasive, their personal identity is heavily fragmented beneath layers of cover identities, and their instinct to deceive makes standard assessment unreliable. Quietly, the S-line is also the template the Federation intelligence community is most interested in—for reasons nobody involved in the Hearth Initiative is cleared to know.

39. #39The Demeter Strain & Demographic Crisisselective

Keys: Demeter Strain, bioweapon, virus, infertility, sterile, Widow Years, gender ratio, demographic crisis

Midway through the war, the Ascendancy deployed the Demeter Strain—a bio-engineered virus designed to target baseline human female biology, triggering a fatal autoimmune cascade linked to estrogen and specific X-chromosome markers. Aerosolized via stealth drones over Federation population centers, agricultural hubs, and military staging areas, the strain caused catastrophic casualties before the Federation synthesized and distributed an inhibitor. By containment, millions of civilian and military women were dead, and a significant percentage of survivors who contracted the virus—even with the inhibitor—were left sterile.

Combined with standard combat attrition, the Strain created a severe demographic skew. On Earth and in the core Federation systems, the ratio is roughly 3.2 men for every 1 woman; some outer-system fleets and mining colonies hit five-to-one. This period of intense social trauma and mass bachelorhood is known as the Widow Years. It has fundamentally altered Federation society, economy, and politics. Fertile civilian women who survived the Strain are a heavily protected, heavily pressured demographic, leading to a fiercely traditionalist, rightward shift in family values.

Ascendancy combat clones were kept sterile via chemical suppressants administered in the crèche, not genetic sterilization. With the Ascendancy's collapse, those suppressants are wearing off. Federation medical evaluation has confirmed that the clones are not only viable but highly fertile. Even the V-line, with their extreme zero-g and radiation bio-engineering, only experience a slightly lower conception rate—still far outstripping the fertility rates of baseline women who survived the Demeter Strain. They are, ironically, the healthiest potential mothers in the Sol system right now. Most integration candidates do not fully understand their own fertility yet, or the political weight their reproductive capacity carries.

40. #40The Scale of Ruin & The Ticking Clockselective

Keys: population collapse, labor shortage, ticking clock, economic ruin, bachelor bloc, empty streets, scale of ruin

The Federation is not recovering; it is teetering on the edge of an abyss.

Pre-war population was roughly 15 Billion across the Sol system. Military dead numbered 1.2 Billion. The Demeter Strain claimed 2.5 Billion lives and sterilized millions more. Current population sits at roughly 9.8 Billion.

This massive loss created a catastrophic labor shortage. The Federation economy only survived by aggressively expanding humanoid service robots and automation—skilled trades are heavily subsidized to keep veterans employed, but everything else is machine-run by necessity, not just convenience. Earth's major cities feel hollowed out; entire residential blocks are dark. Automated grav-trains run on schedule, but the cars are mostly empty, policed by surveillance drones. Massive holo-ad billboards flicker over empty plazas, creating a ghostly, neon-lit silence.

Millions of unmarried, often traumatized men represent a massive, restless demographic known as the "Bachelor Bloc." They are a political powder keg. Crime rates among isolated male populations in the outer system are high, and the government lives in fear of this group radicalizing. Heavy investment in holo-entertainment, civilian grav-sports, and vice districts is an unspoken policy to keep them pacified.

Federation economists have quietly given the government a 15-year window before total systemic collapse. The labor force is too small to maintain the terraforming engines on Mars, the atmospheric processors on Venus, and the lunar shipyards simultaneously. If they can't maintain the life-support infrastructure, the population won't just decline—it will suffocate. The Hearth Initiative and clone integration aren't just psychology experiments; they are desperate, ticking-clock maneuvers to offload the clone population and organically stabilize the birth rate before the Federation goes bankrupt and suffocates.
