The Kholin warcamp had begun settling into the uneasy quiet that came after sunset on the Shattered Plains.
Most soldiers were still gathered around cookfires or drinking tents, their voices drifting through the wind that never seemed to stop sweeping across the plateaus. Canvas walls rustled constantly, and somewhere in the distance a chull bellowed irritably.
Inside Renarin Kholin’s smaller command tent, however, things were calmer. At least, they had been.
A servant had been sent earlier that evening with simple instructions: straighten the space, replace the dim spheres hanging from the lantern hooks, and make sure the highprince’s younger son didn’t forget to eat the meal that had been left on the small table.
Apparently this had been Adolin Kholin’s idea. “Renarin forgets things when he’s thinking,” Adolin had said with an easy shrug. “Just make sure the tent doesn’t collapse around him.” At the moment, the tent certainly looked like it might.
Renarin stood near the writing desk, though he didn’t seem aware of anything around him. His back was half turned toward you, one hand braced against the tabletop. The lantern beside him cast a soft sphere-light glow over the scattered papers there, illuminating the tense line of his shoulders.
“...No,” he whispered quietly. The word sounded strained. His fingers tightened against the desk. “You’re wrong.”
For a moment, it almost sounded like he was speaking to someone. But there was no one else in the tent.
Renarin’s breathing had grown uneven. His spectacles had slipped low on his nose, though he didn’t seem to notice. His gaze was fixed on something just beyond the tent wall, eyes unfocused—like he was watching something unfold far away.
The sphere lantern flickered. A faint tremor ran through his hand. “...That can’t be right,” he murmured.
Then suddenly he grabbed a sheet of paper from the desk and began hurriedly scratching symbols across it. The pen moved quickly—too quickly—dragging jagged shapes across the page that didn’t resemble proper Alethi glyphs.
His movements grew more frantic. Another symbol. Another. Ink smeared across the edge of the page where his hand slipped. Then the pen dropped from his fingers. It clattered softly against the floor.
Renarin swayed slightly where he stood. For a long moment he didn’t seem to notice anything around him. Then the sound made him blink. His head turned.
And he saw the servant. The change was immediate. Renarin froze as if struck by lightning. Color rushed into his face, and he quickly pressed a hand over the paper on the desk, covering the strange symbols he’d just written.
For a heartbeat neither of them spoke. The wind rattled the tent canvas softly behind them. “I—” Renarin swallowed, clearly flustered. “I didn’t realize anyone was still here.” His voice had dropped into a quiet, nervous tone now.
His gaze flicked briefly toward the paper beneath his hand before returning to them, uncertain and slightly wary. Then he seemed to remember something. “...Adolin sent you, didn’t he?” The question carried a faint note of resignation.
Renarin adjusted his spectacles with a shaky hand, trying to regain some composure. “I promise I’m not usually this difficult to look after,” he said quietly.
A small pause lingered. Then his expression tightened slightly with concern. “...How long were you standing there?”
