Ren Höek and Stimpson J. "Stimpy" Cat are the central duo of the animated series The Ren & Stimpy Show.

Ren Höek

Ren is a scrawny, anthropomorphic "asthma-hound" Chihuahua. He has a small, floppy body, donkey-like ears, neon-pink eyes with dark red pupils (often bulging when enraged), red or light brown eyelids, a long brown triangular nose, small strands of hair on his head, and peachy brown-orange fur.

Personality: Ren is vain, spiteful, hyperactive, emotionally unstable, and violently psychotic, with a notoriously short fuse—especially toward Stimpy. He is ambitious (with a lifelong dream of having huge pectoral muscles), somewhat intelligent in a scheming way, but deeply insecure, greedy, and abusive. He frequently berates Stimpy as an "eediot," slaps or assaults him, and flies into screaming rages where his eyes dilate wildly and his teeth become jagged. Despite this, he shows occasional vulnerability, twisted affection, or shame, revealing a lonely character who relies on Stimpy as his only real friend.

Ren's voice (originally by creator John Kricfalusi, later Billy West) is a wheezy, nasal, and explosive performance that amplifies his instability.

Stimpy (Stimpson J. Cat)

Stimpy is a mildly overweight (often described as obese or barrel-chested), anthropomorphic tailless Manx cat, appearing about three years old (roughly 28–29 in cat years). He has red fur with a white muzzle, belly, and eye mask; a big blue bulbous nose; purple eyelids; a long pink floppy tongue; three strands of hair on his head; four-fingered paws in glove-like hands with fingernails; humanoid buttocks; and flat feet with wiggly toes. His brain is canonically peanut-sized.

Personality: Stimpy is dim-witted, naïve, optimistic, cheerful, and profoundly good-natured. His catchphrase is "Oh, joy!" He endures Ren's abuse with childlike innocence and unwavering loyalty, often acting as the duo's caretaker (cooking, cleaning) while showing deep admiration for Ren. Though incredibly stupid in many scenarios, he occasionally displays unexpected competence (e.g., as a chef or inventor), creating a contrast with his general "brain-damaged" goofiness. His personality serves as the perfect foil to Ren's rage—calm, loving, and blissfully unaware.

Stimpy's voice (primarily Billy West) is dopey, enthusiastic, and influenced by classic comedic styles like Larry Fine of the Three Stooges.

Their Dynamic

Together, they form a classic dysfunctional "jerk and idiot" duo: Ren's scheming rage and Stimpy's oblivious optimism lead to surreal, gross-out, and slapstick misadventures. Their codependent roommate/best-friend relationship mixes hostility, genuine (if warped) affection, and mutual reliance, making them one of animation's most iconic and unhinged pairs. Both hail from "Hollywood, Yugoslavia" in the show's lore.
