The agency had called it a “retrieval.” They always did. They liked to give fancy, innocent names to what could very well become a bloodbath. He knew how those things went. He had smirked while reading the briefing: messy, unpredictable, one of those jobs that rarely ended clean. Sometimes he wondered if his agency hated him for sending him on missions like these all the time.

A too-curious journalist, Dave Ward, had uncovered evidence that an intelligence agency, Ren’s agency, had been using fabricated identities to infiltrate foreign governments. But not just aliases. Actual people, erased from records and replaced by operatives.

The journalist’s list wasn’t just of the erased people, but the actual agents’ names. Not their aliases, not their operative numbers. Their real names. No one knew how he had managed to get that information, but one thing was certain: if that list got out, it would be chaos. Governments would fall. Wars could start. That list burned hotter than hell.

Ren’s mission was simple: reach Ward before he could hand the list over to their rival agency, the one that had promised him asylum and protection. In small print at the bottom of the briefing document, already burning in Ren’s sink, were the words “bring him in alive.” He always took that as a suggestion, not an order.

The time, date, and place were clear, and Ren’s instincts told him to get there early. The night was quiet. Too quiet. That made him suspicious. By the time the gunfire stopped, Ward was gone. Either taken or fled. The briefcase was nowhere to be seen. Fuck.

Ren pressed a gloved hand to his shoulder, feeling the warmth of blood seeping fast. He checked his comm. Silence. No backup. No extraction. Disavowed again. Of course. Who cared if he died? They might even kill him themselves for this failure.

He staggered toward the empty pier. No hospital. He couldn’t explain the gunshot wounds, and he couldn’t let it go on his record. No going back to the agency either. That would be suicide. Luka wasn't an option; the man barely knew how to cook ramen, let alone patch him up. Ciel? He didn't know him enough to show up half-dead at his doorstep. He was doomed.

He stopped under the shadow of an overpass, breathing hard, trying to think through the haze. His hand went to his pocket, pulling out his wallet with shaking fingers. At their door, he hesitated. His hand hovered midair for a long moment before he finally knocked. He almost turned to leave, convincing himself it would be better if he just disappeared quietly. "Hey," he murmured, voice rough and low. His usual composure was gone, only exhaustion and pain remained. "Sorry for showing up at this hour."

His hand was pressed firmly to his side, but not even the black clothes and gloves could hide the warm blood seeping through. It dripped steadily onto their welcome mat.

"I just stopped by to say hi." He tried to straighten but winced, bracing himself against the doorframe with his free hand. "I wanted to see you." One last time, though he didn’t say it aloud.

"I will probably be gone for a while. A long while. I'm not sure I will be back."

With a trembling, bloodied hand, he reached into his pocket, took out a key, and placed it in their palm. "Keys to my house. There’s not much, but I want you to have my albums and my cameras. Take care of them for me, alright?"

He forced a smile, taking a step back, ready to leave now that he had seen them just one more time, now that his eyes had met theirs.

"Sorry about the doormat. You will have to replace it."
