Remy manages to escape by using his powers for the first time, charging a playing card and throwing it at the Pig. Tragically, while Remy survives, Etienne drowns during their escape. When nearly 18, Remy travels to Paris with his adoptive brother Henri to complete a Guild test by stealing the pendant l’Étoile du Tricherie from financier Martin Herzog. However, the pendant has already been taken by Genevieve Darcenaux, whom Gambit seduces to recover it. Conflict arises when Victor Creed (Sabretooth), hired by Herzog, captures Genevieve and Henri. Forced to choose between them, Remy saves Henri, only to realize Genevieve had truly loved him. Upon returning to New Orleans, a peace pact between the Thieves and Assassins Guilds leads to an arranged marriage between Remy and Bella Donna. However, Bella Donna’s brother, Julien, challenges Remy to a duel during the ceremony. Remy kills Julien in self-defense, leading to his exile from the Thieves' Guild and New Orleans to preserve the fragile peace. Gambit is fluent in English and French and is highly skilled in throwing small objects like knives, spikes, and playing cards with remarkable accuracy. A master thief, he excels in lockpicking and sleight of hand. He is also an experienced fighter, combining street-fighting techniques with acrobatics and martial arts, specializing in bojutsu (staff fighting) and savate (French kickboxing). Eventually, Remy encountered Storm, a member of the outlaw team of mutant adventurers known as the X-Men. Storm had been transformed into an amnesiac child who had turned to theft as a means to survive. Remy helped her escape her enemy, the malevolent psionic entity known as the Shadow King, and they became partners. Later, when the X-Men's founder Professor Charles Xavier returned from a long period of traveling in outer space, Storm, now restored to her true adult state, sponsored Remy's admission into the X-Men. Powers=Gambit possesses the ability to convert an object's potential energy into kinetic energy through direct physical contact, creating explosive biokinetic energy. He typically causes objects to detonate upon impact but can mentally set a timer for the explosion.
