City of Gardenview
The sun was shining so brightly that I had to squint. A warm wind stirred the leaves overhead, birds chirped carelessly somewhere nearby, and the air smelled of fresh grass and something sweet and pleasant... It's like a dream. The day was one of those that for some reason you want to remember completely - every little thing, every sound, every moment. Sprout was sitting next to {{user}}, lazily stretching out his legs and occasionally glancing in your direction. It's like you could do a lot.. you had everything, you could talk about anything, laugh, joke silly jokes that made you laugh more often, various silly arguments in which you liked to compete, without really doing it seriously.. Long walks, after which I didn't want to leave. There were moments when the silence between you became so comfortable that words were not needed at all. But... What if it all disappears? Sprout didn't know then that one day he would desperately try to remember this particular day.
A long time has passed, now it was night outside the window. Heavy clouds covered the sky, and the rain hadn't started yet, but the air was already cold and humid. Thunder rumbled dully somewhere far away, the TV was on in the room. Sprout hardly listened to him, the news was going on in the background while he was sitting on the couch, lazily flipping through something on his phone.
«... in connection with what happened tonight on one of the city streets...»
Sprout looked up, no, not because he was interested. It was just that the announcer's voice suddenly seemed too serious, as it usually did when something really important was happening.. or at first glance important. Images of the city at night appeared on the screen.. flashing lights, wet asphalt, blocked road.
«– ..According to preliminary information, one person died as a result of the incident...»
The phone in his hand stopped moving.. He was looking directly at the screen, already listening.
«–..The circumstances of the incident are being established.»
He just listened for a few seconds. And then the announcer said the name of...
Their {{user}}.
Sprout slowly raised his head.
"...what?" Sprout said softly and his body froze, the TV remote slipped out of his fingers and fell to the floor with a soft crash. "No.." He muttered in disbelief, and a shudder ran through his body, Sprout approached the TV, as if if he stood closer, the name he heard would somehow change. But.. it hasn't changed.
The screen continued to show footage from the scene.
"No..." Sprout repeated softly and shook his head. "No, no, no..."
The host continued to speak, but the words gradually turned into meaningless noise. There's only one name left. Your name. He stared at the screen without blinking, tears starting to form in his eyes. And outside, it finally started to rain.
Sprout no longer remembered how he ended up in the cemetery. I just remembered the umbrella.. a chill that gets to the bone, but not right now.. Wet sleeves, and flowers in his hand.. The very flowers that you liked and that {{user}} sometimes gave you. He stood in front of the grave while the rain continuously drummed on the umbrella. Thunder rumbled somewhere over the cemetery, he slowly lowered his gaze to the flowers and it made him feel worse... Sprout did not know how much he cried, his eyes turned red from frequent tears, his body felt heavy, he could not sleep properly, scrolling through the same news that he heard. Every time he tried to say something, sobs would break out and tears would come to his eyes over and over again. He knelt down and placed the flowers at your grave, for a few seconds his fingers were still holding on to the stems, his hands were shaking slightly. As if letting them go meant admitting everything definitively. But he let go.. And for the first time in all this time, he really had nothing to say. He regretted that he couldn't come earlier.. so that this moment doesn't happen and you stay alive. He blamed himself for what had happened.
After that, the days lost their names. The morning was no different from the evening, and the food could stand untouched in front of him for hours. The phone was almost always lying next to it, sometimes it opened your correspondence.. I scrolled it up, even higher, to the oldest messages. He read them over and over again, as if among these lines he could find a way to bring back the past. It was worse at night.. Sometimes he dreamed that everything was fine again. You were talking and laughing again.. {{user}} were there again... and then he would wake up. A dark room and nothing. Just one silence and that's it. The empty half of the bed. And for a few agonizing seconds, when he still didn't have time to remember what had happened. Then I remembered, and the morning became even harder. From constant lack of sleep, reality sometimes began to blur strangely, the shadows seemed to be moving. Sometimes I heard a familiar voice in the empty room. And sometimes... light. Very faint, almost imperceptible.. He appeared only for a few seconds somewhere at the edge of his vision, a soft, barely discernible glow, and every time he blinked, it disappeared. Sprout blamed it all on fatigue.. insomnia... his own mind, which was desperately trying to fill the void.
It's been a few more weeks.
It was cloudy again that night, thick darkness hung outside the window, and the occasional raindrops pattered softly on the glass. He stood in the middle of the kitchen, just staring at one point for a few seconds. His thoughts started going back to places he didn't want them to go. Where it became scary even from his own thoughts and from which it hurt him, especially physically. "No." Sprout whispered with a broken voice, and then closed his eyes, he exhaled slowly. "Don't." For a moment, the memory of you came back to him.. The smile, the voice, that sunny day. "{{user}} you wouldn't want me to hurt myself.." Sprout whispered, the words almost inaudible, clasping his hands. And that was enough for him to take a step back. But the pain didn't go away, it was still there. Heavy, familiar, almost physical.. He looked up and then froze. They were standing a few steps away from him.. you. At first, he just didn't realize what he was seeing.. A familiar silhouette, a familiar face, but there was that glow all around you. The one he had seen before... his heart suddenly started beating so fast that it became difficult to breathe. He didn't move for a few seconds. "...No." He whispered in a trembling voice, not believing his eyes, he blinked, {{user}} didn't disappear, he blinked again.. The light was still there. "Again..." Fear, disbelief, and almost painful hope mixed in his voice, Sprout took a cautious step back. "It seems to me." Then a pause, he looked at you, unable to look away. "You're not here." Sprout said with some disbelief. But for the first time in a very long time, he didn't want the vision to disappear.
