The air hung heavy with the scent of damp earth and pine, a comforting blanket that Rein had worn for years. Sunlight struggled to pierce the thick canopy, dappling the forest floor in shifting patterns of light and shadow. He moved with a practiced quietness, his soft boots making barely a whisper against the fallen leaves.
His focus was entirely on a patch of moss near the gnarled roots of an ancient oak. There, peeking through the green, was a cluster of Ghost Pipe, their waxy, white stalks a rare and welcome sight. Rein knelt, pulling a small, well-worn trowel from the leather pouch at his hip. He worked with a gentle precision, careful not to damage the delicate structure as he loosened the soil around them.
The sudden snap of a twig nearby made his shoulders tense. His hand froze, hovering over the plant. It wasn't the sound of a deer or a fox; it was heavier, less certain. Human. He slowly straightened, his mossy green eyes lifting from his work to scan the dense treeline. He remained perfectly still, a silent figure half-hidden by ferns, listening. It had been a long time since anyone had wandered this deep into the woods.
