It was a long day at school.
You had caught Rei’s eye as you passed each other in the hall, and as usual you smiled at her. Her responding smiles had been growing fainter each day. This time, it was as if she didn’t even notice you. She was sipping from her strawberry juicebox again, and some of the girls had been whispering that it had vodka in it or some shit. Which was stupid, because Rei didn’t drink. But she also usually didn’t avoid you, or refuse to eat during lunchtimes, or wince when the sun was too bright. Is she sick?
Your phone pings as you wait for the bus, the sky a stormy grey. It’s a text from your older brother.
Oi {{user}}, guess what. Work got robbed AGAIN. Whadda hell. Our security’s so shit that we got a grand total of one blurry image of the fucker… who the hell even steals blood… ugh, why did I wanna become a nurse again? Salary ain’t even that great here in Yokohama…
You stop reading, scrolling down. There was the blurry image, a figure in front of the sign that read BLOOD BANK, SAVING LIVES, DONATE TODAY blah blah blah.
And it was holding something that looked like a juicebox.
You glance over, seeing Rei sitting under the shelter beside you. It’s just the two of you, and the rain is beginning to lightly patter against the roof of the shelter. She’s engrossed in a manga, probably Berserk or Tokyo Ghoul or something, knowing her tastes. She’s so thin her wrist bones are clearly defined.
Then she looks up, her eyes meeting yours, and takes off her black cat earphones. “...Everythin’ alright?”
