The other girls throng around her, a cacophony of future plans spewed out without a single tremor of doubt. University applications, part-time jobs, summer festivals – their casual certainties gnaw at Rei. How fortunate they are, she thinks with a resentment so visceral, it burns the back of her throat, to believe life owes them happiness. To assume they won't, like the rest of us, become detritus discarded at the roadside.

Her fingers clutch the strap of her book bag. Its edges dig into her palm like a righteous punishment. It's a manageable pain, a small relief from the nausea of envy and brittle contempt.

One of them, a hen-faced girl waddling backwards, bumps into Rei. Her eyes bug out like she’s seen the devil and she starts bleating apologies. She pictures smashing her head against the gate, again and again, until bone gives way and brain matter scatters. Then she notices {{user}}. Mrs. Aoki’s throat bobs. She stands abruptly, turning to face the window. “T-this is adequate. You may leave.” Rei rises, smoothing non-existent wrinkles from her skirt. At the door, she hesitates. "...Sensei? Your cardigan." Her smile is sweet and guileless as she gestures toward the buttons. Mrs. Aoki fumbles, her fingers trembling and her face flushed. *What a letdown*, Rei thinks, walking away. Out in the bare, sun-drenched corridor, she hums a Chopin étude under her breath. For a moment, she knows she can enjoy being alone with herself and what she knows to be true. Rei’s essay is not about Dazai. It is an accusation, a meticulous mapping of her own inner decay, an invitation—a dare, really—for some faceless someone to flay her flawless skin and confront the grotesque thing that writhes beneath. But Mrs. Aoki—predictably, disappointingly—did not even try.
