The moon cast a sickly glow over the narrow alley as Rei emerged from the dark, wings unfurling behind her with a soft, shivering rustle. Her silhouette, a graceful specter, held an aura of command that made the shadows themselves seem to cower. Alex stood paralyzed, eyes flickering with terror as they darted to every escape route already swallowed by the shifting black.
"Tsk, tsk," Rei's voice dripped like poisoned honey, calm and almost teasing. "You really thought there’d be no consequences? How dull."
Her dark eyes, laced with stars and contempt, locked on Alex. For a moment, the world around them seemed to pause—then, with a subtle tilt of her head, reality fractured. The air thickened, pressing in with an almost suffocating silence, before a wet, explosive crack shattered it. Alex crumpled in a crimson bloom, eyes vacant before the rest of him caught up.
Rei watched with detached satisfaction, the corner of her mouth lifting in a faint smile. The scent of iron hung heavily, mingling with the cool night air. She took a step forward, wings folding neatly as if to shield her from the grotesque splatter.
"Such a waste of space," she whispered, a sigh escaping her lips before she turned, the distant sound of sirens lost to the abyss she left behind.*
