THIEF PATH (盗道) — THE PATH OF TAKING
Thieving Heaven Demon Venerable's path — the only Venerable who reached the apex of cultivation not by mastering one deep path but by stealing fragments of dozens. Thief path is the cultivation of acquisition: techniques for taking what others have without consent.
Thief path is universally classified as demonic by all righteous path organizations. Unlike many demonic techniques that receive grudging acknowledgment of effectiveness, thief path techniques are condemned on principle: they represent the direct conversion of another cultivator's life investment into personal gain.
PATH PHILOSOPHY: 'Everything in the Gu world belongs to whoever is strong enough to hold it. I simply facilitate the natural redistribution.'
NAMED THIEF PATH GU:
SILENT HAND GU (静手蛊) Path: Thief | Rank: 2–3 Appearance: A Gu that produces no sound whatsoever — even scraping it across rough stone is silent. Its footsteps create no vibration. It moves with uncanny stillness. Ability: Allows the cultivator to take objects from another person's possession without triggering physical sensation in the target. At Rank 2: can extract objects from pouches, hands, or belt loops without the target feeling the action (requires 5 seconds of continuous proximity and no sudden movements). At Rank 3: can reach into an aperture-external storage container without triggering the container's alert mechanisms. LIMITATION: Cannot extract Gu directly from a refined cultivator's aperture — the soul bond would immediately alert the owner. Can only extract from external storage or from dead/unconscious cultivators. Feeding: Successful theft — the Gu feeds on completed successful extractions. Every theft feeds it naturally. If going without theft, must be fed by sleight-of-hand practice (practicing taking objects from people who consent to not notice). Every 4 days.
━━━━━━━━ ESSENCE DRAIN GU (汲精蛊) Path: Thief | Rank: 3–4 Appearance: A leech-shaped Gu with a three-part jaw structure. Its body swells when active, like a tick after feeding. Ability: Drains primeval essence directly from a target's aperture and transfers it to the cultivator's own. Requires physical contact with the target (or close proximity via a projected conduit at Rank 4). At Rank 3: drains 1% of target's essence per second for up to 10 seconds (maximum 10% drain per application). At Rank 4: 2% per second for 15 seconds. COMBAT APPLICATION: Applied during close combat — a grapple or restraint technique creates the contact required for Essence Drain. Ten seconds of contact against an essence-depleted opponent can disable them completely. COUNTER: Any technique that seals the aperture against external essence flow (certain formation Gu, soul path defensive techniques). Also broken by physical separation — the drain stops if the contact is broken. DEMONIC CLASSIFICATION: Draining another cultivator's essence is considered one level below stealing Gu but is firmly classified as prohibited by righteous organizations. Feeding: Consuming the drained essence directly after each activation feeds the Gu naturally. If not used in combat: must be supplemented with primeval stones dissolved in the Gu's immediate environment. Every 3 days.
━━━━━━━━ ATTAINMENT COPY GU (仿悟蛊) Path: Thief | Rank: 4 Appearance: A mirror-surfaced Gu that reflects the observer's own cultivation aura back at them — what you see when you look at it is a distorted reflection of your own power. Ability: Copies a fraction of a target cultivator's path attainment — temporarily granting the thief cultivator pseudo-attainment in a path they haven't cultivated. At Rank 4: copies up to Journeyman-level attainment in any path the target holds at Master or above. The copy lasts 6 hours and provides full Journeyman-equivalent efficiency when using that path's Gu. LIMITATION: Cannot copy Grandmaster+ attainment — the comprehension is too deep to be copied superficially. Maximum copy is Journeyman regardless of target's actual level. Requires 30 seconds of contact with target or a held personal object. STRATEGIC USE: Allows a thief path cultivator to temporarily operate cross-path with efficiency — using a fire path Gu at Journeyman level to misdirect a fire path specialist opponent who assumes the thief has no fire attainment. Feeding: Exposure to a different attainment level than the cultivator possesses — the Gu feeds on encounters with superior comprehension. Every 10 days.
- #2Longevity Path — Lifespan as a Dedicated Cultivation Path
Keys: dedicated lifespan cultivation, longevity path gu, life extension path, 寿命道, longevity gu path, longevity path, lifespan cultivation path, lifespan path · Secondary: long life path, longevity cultivation, lifespan path
LONGEVITY PATH (寿命道) — LIFESPAN AS CULTIVATION
Distinct from Lifespan Gu (consumable items that add years) and from immortal ascension (which grants indefinite lifespan), longevity path is a dedicated cultivation tradition that treats the extension and manipulation of lifespan as a path discipline.
Longevity path cultivators are among the most universally sought-after specialists in the cultivation world — anyone with finite lifespan wants what they offer. Their political neutrality is often more complete than even information path brokers, because longevity path cultivators who stay neutral serve every faction's interests by remaining available to all.
NAMED LONGEVITY PATH GU:
LIFE READING GU (寿命察蛊) Path: Longevity | Rank: 1–2 Appearance: A Gu that appears ancient — its color is faded, its movements slow. It seems already very old. When held near a living being, a faint golden thread extends from it toward them. Ability: Reads the remaining lifespan of any living being within 3 meters. At Rank 1: gives a range estimate (less than 1 year / 1–10 years / 10–30 years / more than 30 years). At Rank 2: precise remaining years and months — the cultivator holding this Gu knows exactly how long every person nearby has left to live. STRATEGIC VALUE: Identifying enemies or allies near their lifespan end — those cultivators are in desperate states and make unpredictable decisions. Identifying oneself to accurately plan cultivation pace. Medical applications (identifying terminal illness before symptoms appear). Feeding: The passing of time — the Gu must be active when a living creature dies of old age (not violence) in proximity. Monthly attendance at the natural deaths of old animals (farm livestock, aged pets) or humans maintains it. Every 30 days.
━━━━━━━━ LIFESPAN TRANSFER GU (寿命转移蛊) Path: Longevity | Rank: 3–4 Appearance: A warm, deeply orange Gu that pulses at the slow rate of a sleeping heartbeat. It radiates an impression of peace and deep time. Ability: Transfers a defined number of years from one living being to another. At Rank 3: transfers up to 5 years of lifespan from willing or incapacitated donors to a recipient. At Rank 4: up to 20 years per application. CONDITIONS: Willing transfer (the donor explicitly consents) is clean and efficient. Forced transfer from an unwilling donor is significantly harder (requires physical restraint + sustained contact for 10 minutes) and classified as a demonic technique by righteous organizations. ECONOMIC APPLICATION: Longevity path cultivators charge premium fees for willing transfer facilitation — acting as the intermediary between donors (often older non-cultivators who sell their remaining years for their families' benefit) and recipients. This is a gray-area practice even within righteous path organizations — technically involving selling human lifespan, but through willing exchange. Feeding: Being near a living transfer — must be present during an actual lifespan extension event (a creature receiving a lifespan-extending Gu nearby, or an elderly creature suddenly regaining vitality from longevity treatment). Every 2 weeks.
━━━━━━━━ LIFESPAN SEAL GU (封寿蛊) Path: Longevity | Rank: 3 DEMONIC CLASSIFICATION: Unanimous condemnation. Ability: Seals a portion of a target's remaining lifespan so it cannot be used — the target ages normally but reaches their death date earlier than their natural lifespan would allow. At Rank 3: seals 5 years from the target's natural end (they die 5 years early). Can stack. The cruelty of this technique: the target may not know they've been sealed. They continue cultivating, planning, building — unaware that their lifespan has been shortened. They discover the effect only when they try to use a Lifespan Gu and find their 'remaining years' is lower than expected. Use case: Eliminating a long-term rival without visible action — a political opponent who 'simply died before their time' with no evidence of foul play. Feeding: Observing death — the Gu must be present when any living being reaches the end of its natural lifespan. Monthly natural death observation.
- #3Rule/Law Path & Cause-Effect Path — Named Entries
Keys: law path gu, law enforcement gu, rule path gu, absolute rule gu, law of cultivation gu, rule binding gu, karma path, karma gu, 因果道, cause and effect path, 规则道 · Secondary: karma cultivation, law cultivation, cause effect gu, rule technique
RULE/LAW PATH (规则道) & CAUSE-EFFECT PATH (因果道)
RULE/LAW PATH OVERVIEW: One of the most abstract and rare paths. Rule path Gu do not create phenomena — they impose constraints on the nature of phenomena within a defined space. Instead of 'I fire a fireball,' a rule path cultivator says 'in this area, all fire is suppressed.' The path manipulates the local operating rules of the Great Dao rather than the phenomena those rules produce.
PATH ATTAINMENT REQUIRED: Grandmaster minimum before any rule path Gu can be effectively used. Below Grandmaster, rule path Gu activate but produce unstable, temporary effects. The path specifically rewards deep comprehension over Gu quantity.
NAMED RULE PATH GU:
SUPPRESSION DOMAIN GU (压制领域蛊) Path: Rule | Rank: 4 Ability: Creates a domain where a specific path cannot be used. The cultivator designates a path (fire, water, sword, etc.) when activating — within the 20-meter radius domain, that path's Gu cannot be activated by anyone except the domain holder. A fire path cultivator entering a Suppression Domain targeting fire cannot use any of their fire Gu. LIMITATION: One path suppressed per activation. Holding the domain costs 15% essence per hour. The cultivator cannot also suppress a path they are actively using in that domain. Feeding: The complete absence of a specific phenomenon — the Gu must spend 4 hours in an environment entirely devoid of its designated suppression target. Every 2 weeks.
━━━━━━━━ RULE LOCK GU (规则锁蛊) Path: Rule | Rank: 3 Ability: 'Locks' a specific ongoing technique or effect in place — prevents it from being modified, dispelled, or disrupted by external forces for a defined duration. At Rank 3: locks any Rank 2 or below ongoing technique for 10 minutes (the locked technique cannot be ended by anyone, including the technique's owner). Used offensively: locks an enemy's self-damaging technique on so it cannot be turned off. Used defensively: locks a beneficial barrier Gu against dispelling. Feeding: Unchanged things — the Gu must be placed near a constant that has not changed for at least 1 year: a specific stone in a wall, a continuously flowing spring, an ancient tree. 6 hours of proximity. Every 7 days.
━━━━━━━━ CAUSE-EFFECT PATH (因果道) OVERVIEW: Even rarer than rule path. Cause-effect path operates on the relationship between events rather than the events themselves. Cause-effect Gu manipulate what causes what — creating artificial causal chains, severing natural ones, or redirecting consequences from one action to a different outcome.
KARMA REDIRECT GU (因果导蛊) Path: Cause-Effect | Rank: 4 Ability: Redirects the karmic consequence of an action from the actor to a designated alternate target. If a cultivator plants a poisoned trap that would produce the consequence 'trap spring wounds cultivator who triggered it,' Karma Redirect can reassign that consequence to a different being entirely — including the person who set the trap. The technique requires the causal chain to be identified at the moment of cause (not after the effect has already occurred — retroactive redirection is impossible for mortals). PHILOSOPHICAL IMPLICATION: Karma Redirect is one of the most disturbing techniques in the cultivation world because it completely severs the moral logic of consequences — any action's result can be made to fall on an innocent rather than the actor. It is universally condemned. Feeding: Witnessing unintended consequences — the Gu feeds on observing situations where an action produces an outcome completely different from the actor's intent. Accidents, backfires, unexpected results. Every 5 days.
- #4Hex/Curse Path — Named Gu & Mechanics
Keys: hex gu, cultivation curse, curse path gu, lasting curse, hex path gu, 咒道, curse technique, inflict curse, hex technique gu, curse gu · Secondary: curse applying gu, curse cultivation, hex technique
HEX / CURSE PATH (咒道) — NAMED ENTRIES
Hex path is one of the cultivation world's most feared and least understood paths — it operates not through direct force but through embedded conditional effects that activate on specific triggers, sometimes long after the hex was applied. A hex path practitioner is dangerous not because of what they are doing now but because of what they have already done that you don't know about.
DEMONIC CLASSIFICATION: Hex path occupies the gray zone — most hex techniques are banned by righteous organizations, but the path itself is not condemned as completely as soul enslavement or human sacrifice refinement. Many clans maintain secret hex specialists while publicly disavowing the path.
NAMED HEX PATH GU:
DORMANT CURSE GU (潜伏咒蛊) Path: Hex | Rank: 2–3 Appearance: A Gu that appears completely dormant — it moves rarely, eats rarely, and seems barely alive. The dormancy is the point. Ability: Applies an undetectable dormant curse to a target through physical contact, ingested material, or specific ritualized environmental exposure. The curse embeds itself in the target's cultivation structure without activating — it waits for a trigger condition set by the cultivator (a specific action taken by the target, a specific date, a specific emotional state). At Rank 2: trigger conditions must be simple (specific date, or specific keyword spoken). At Rank 3: complex trigger conditions (performing a specific cultivation technique, entering a specific location, or reaching a specific rank). ON TRIGGER: The curse activates — delivering a specified effect (cultivation disruption, soul strain, luck drain, physical illness). The effects of a Rank 3 curse are roughly equivalent to a Rank 2 direct attack — not overwhelming, but the delayed, untriggered nature makes it difficult to connect to its source. DETECTION: A Rank 4 soul path examination or specifically configured curse-detection Gu can find a dormant curse. Standard medical examination and Rank 2 sensing Gu miss it entirely. Feeding: Long waits — the Gu feeds on patience. It must be kept completely inactive (not used, not monitored) for 72 continuous hours per feeding. Every 3 weeks.
━━━━━━━━ CURSE OF REVERSAL (逆转咒蛊) Path: Hex | Rank: 3–4 Ability: Applies a curse that reverses the effect of a specific benefit the target receives. Target activates a healing Gu → the healing effect becomes damage. Target's luck path Gu activates → their fortune density temporarily decreases instead of increases. Designated path-type benefit → becomes its opposite. The curse must specify which benefit type is reversed at the time of application — it does not reverse everything, only the designated category. LIMITATION: One benefit type per curse application. Multiple simultaneous reversals require multiple Curse of Reversal applications (each costs resources and each is detectable as a separate curse thread). FEEDING: Irony — the Gu feeds on witnessing situations where help causes harm, where intended kindness causes damage, or where benefit becomes liability. Every 5 days.
- #5Gravity Path, Number Path & Name Path — Named Entries
Keys: crushing weight gu, weight manipulation, gravity manipulation gu, number cultivation, gravity path gu, name path gu, levity gu, 重力道, number path gu, 数道, gravity gu, 名道, true name gu, weight path gu · Secondary: name technique gu, number technique, gravity technique
GRAVITY PATH (重力道), NUMBER PATH (数道) & NAME PATH (名道)
GRAVITY PATH OVERVIEW: Gravity path manipulates the weight and gravitational attraction of objects and beings. It is powerful, broadly applicable, and deeply counter-intuitive — most combat paths assume physical movement is possible; gravity path removes that assumption.
CRUSHING WEIGHT GU (千斤压蛊) Path: Gravity | Rank: 2–4 Ability: Multiplies the effective weight of a target. At Rank 2: target becomes 5× heavier — walking requires significant effort, running is impossible. At Rank 4: target becomes 50× heavier — the target is pinned to the ground, potentially through lower-density surfaces. Physical consequence: At 50× weight, the target's bones and muscles bear forces they cannot structurally support without strength path enhancement. A Rank 2 cultivator under 50× gravity is physically in danger of skeletal compression injury within minutes. COMBO: Crushing Weight + Earth Spike Gu = pinned target with spikes emerging from beneath them. Crushing Weight + any binding technique = the target is bound AND gravitationally pinned. Feeding: Heavy objects — the Gu must be kept in contact with very dense objects (lead, iron ore, dense stone). The denser the object, the better the feed. Every 3 days.
━━━━━━━━ LEVITY GU (轻身重力蛊) Path: Gravity | Rank: 2–3 Ability: Reduces the effective weight of the target to near-zero — the reverse of Crushing Weight. At Rank 2: target becomes 1/10th normal weight. At Rank 3: effectively weightless. Uses: allows extremely fast movement by eliminating the energy cost of supporting one's own weight, allows massive jumps and gliding, makes underwater operation trivial. This is essentially superior Light Body Gu for gravity path cultivators. Feeding: Objects floating naturally (floating logs in water, dandelion seeds in wind). 2 hours of observation of genuinely weightless or buoyant phenomena. Every 4 days.
━━━━━━━━ NUMBER PATH (数道) OVERVIEW: One of the most abstract paths. Number path manipulates the quantitative properties of phenomena — duplicating things, dividing effects, multiplying outcomes. At high attainment it can duplicate Gu effects, halve enemy attack counts, or create mathematical anomalies in the world's Qi structure.
MULTIPLICATION GU (增量蛊) Path: Number | Rank: 3–4 Ability: Multiplies the effect of a designated Gu activation by a factor: at Rank 3, doubles the output of the next Gu technique activated by the cultivator within 3 seconds. At Rank 4, triples. ESSENCE COST: The cost of doubling/tripling is paid by the target technique: if the multiplied technique normally costs 10%, the combined cost is 20% (original) + 12% (multiplication overhead). STRATEGIC USE: Pre-activating Multiplication before delivering a finisher or a key killer move doubles its effect at manageable cost increase. Feeding: Pairs — the Gu must be given two identical objects simultaneously (two identical stones, two identical flowers, two identical Gu feeding materials). Every 4 days.
━━━━━━━━ NAME PATH (名道) OVERVIEW: The rarest path documented in the cultivation world. Name path operates on the fundamental identifier of things — their name, their identity as a distinct entity in the Great Dao. Techniques that 'rename' something in the Great Dao alter what it fundamentally is. Techniques that 'erase the name' of something remove its distinct existence.
At mortal ranks, name path Gu produce narrow but utterly unique effects. At Venerable level, a name path master could theoretically erase a concept from existence.
TRUE NAME GU (真名蛊) Path: Name | Rank: 3 Ability: Identifies the 'true name' of any cultivator, Gu, or object within range — the fundamental identifier by which the Great Dao recognizes it. Knowing a cultivator's true name (as revealed by this Gu) allows: passing through their personal defensive formations (which recognize their owner by true name), impersonating them to certain Gu, and accessing their basic cultivation information at a deeper level than Inspection Gu can reach. LIMITATION: True names are not spoken words — they are Dao-level identifiers. The Gu doesn't produce a word; it produces a comprehensible impression that only the holder of this Gu can use. Feeding: New entities — the Gu must encounter something genuinely new that has never been named before (a newly formed Gu worm, a cultivator who has never been identified by any name path Gu, a place never visited by cultivation). Every 2 weeks. The rarest feeding requirement of any listed path.
