Refine Craft — Will, Wisdom & The Hidden Systems

1. #1The Will System — Core Mechanics

Keys: will system, how will works, 意志, will strength, will refinement, cultivator will, will and gu refinement, will force, will training · Secondary: will power cultivation, mental force cultivation, refinement will

THE WILL SYSTEM (意志体系) — FOUNDATION OF ALL REFINEMENT

Will (意志) is the mental force a cultivator exerts during Gu refinement. It is not metaphorical — it is a measurable, trainable force that directly determines the cultivator's refinement capability. Every interaction with a Gu worm — from initial bonding to sustained activation — passes through the cultivator's will.

WHAT WILL IS: Will is the concentrated output of the cultivator's consciousness directed outward as a manipulative force. When a cultivator refines a wild Gu, they are extending their will into the Gu's core and asserting dominance over the Gu's own instinctual self-will. Stronger will overwhelms the Gu's resistance faster, with less soul expenditure, and holds the bond more securely.

Will is distinct from primeval essence. Primeval essence is the energetic fuel for Gu activation — it provides the power. Will is the controlling intelligence that directs that power and maintains the refinement bond. Running out of primeval essence prevents Gu activation. Weak will results in poor control, unstable activation, and increased failure rates during refinement.

   HOW WILL STRENGTH AFFECTS CULTIVATION:

GU REFINEMENT SPEED: Will strength is the primary determinant of how quickly a cultivator can refine a new Gu. A cultivator with exceptional will can refine a Rank 1 wild Gu in minutes. Average will requires hours. Weak will may require a full day for a Rank 1 Gu — and the bond formed is less stable.

SIMULTANEOUS GU CONTROL: Each active Gu requires a small but continuous stream of will-attention to remain under control. Weak-will cultivators can maintain only 2–3 active Gu simultaneously before the strain causes activation errors. Strong-will cultivators maintain 5–6 active Gu with total reliability. Exceptional will cultivators (rare — typically associated with wisdom path development) can simultaneously control all Gu in their aperture without conscious attention allocation.

KILLER MOVE STABILITY: Killer moves require precise simultaneous will-direction to multiple Gu. A cultivator whose will cannot manage the coordination required for a complex killer move will experience activation desynchronization — the Gu fire in incorrect sequence, producing unpredictable (often self-damaging) results. This is why high-level killer moves are inaccessible to cultivators without sufficient will development regardless of their rank.

HIGH-RANK GU ACTIVATION: Using a Gu significantly above your rank (within the safety threshold of not bursting the aperture) requires proportionally more will to maintain control. A Rank 2 cultivator using a Rank 4 Gu borrowed from a higher-rank ally may physically be able to channel the essence but find the will demand of controlling the Gu overwhelming.

HOW TO TRAIN WILL: • Complex cultivation meditation: Rather than simple essence-cycling meditation, constructing elaborate mental landscapes and maintaining them with precision trains will. • Multiple simultaneous refinement attempts: Deliberately trying to refine two Gu at once (usually failing) gradually builds will capacity. • Wisdom path cultivation: The most systematic will-amplification method available. Wisdom path Gu specifically target will capacity as their primary improvement vector. • Prolonged killer move practice: Maintaining complex multi-Gu combinations for extended periods trains the will-attention stamina required for battle. • Mental arts: Certain non-Gu disciplines (mathematical calculation, strategic game practice, memory training) strengthen the underlying cognitive capacity that will draws from.

WILL DEPLETION: Unlike primeval essence (which regenerates with rest), will depletion — sustained over-extension of will-force — requires mental recovery rather than physical rest. A cultivator who has spent hours in intense refinement work may have full primeval essence but no will capacity for further refinement until they sleep. Combat can also deplete will if the cultivator is managing many complex Gu simultaneously in sustained high-intensity engagement.

2. #2Wisdom Path Gu — Named Entries & Light of Wisdom

Keys: 智慧蛊, multiple wisdom gu, wisdom gu, thought speed gu, wisdom path cultivation, wisdom path gu, fang yuan wisdom gu, mental enhancement gu, 智慧光, wisdom accumulation, light of wisdom · Secondary: calculation gu, intelligence gu, thinking enhancement

WISDOM PATH GU (智慧道蛊) — NAMED ENTRIES & THE LIGHT OF WISDOM

Wisdom path is unique among the major paths: its benefits are cumulative rather than linear. A single wisdom Gu provides marginal thinking enhancement. Ten wisdom Gu working simultaneously create a qualitative shift. Twenty or more wisdom Gu at high ranks enable cognitive states that are qualitatively different from ordinary human thought — the 'Light of Wisdom.'

This cumulative structure is why Fang Yuan dedicates enormous resources to accumulating wisdom Gu across his second life. Not because any single wisdom Gu is transformatively powerful but because the stack of many creates something that transcends its individual components.

   NAMED WISDOM PATH GU:

THOUGHT ACCELERATION GU (思维加速蛊) Path: Wisdom | Rank: 1–3 Appearance: A tiny, hyperactive Gu that never stops moving — it circles its container endlessly, faster than the eye can easily follow. Its body has a mirror-bright surface that reflects its own movement into recursive patterns. Ability: Accelerates the cultivator's thinking speed. Time does not slow down — the cultivator simply thinks faster within real time. Rank 1: 1.5× normal thinking speed. Rank 2: 3× normal. Rank 3: 7× normal thinking speed (time perception does not change, but the cultivator's thought-count per second triples). Stack effect: Multiple Thought Acceleration Gu stack additively. Three Rank 2 Gu provide ~9× thinking speed. This stacking is the foundation of Fang Yuan's ability to calculate multi-variable outcomes faster than opponents can react. Essence cost: Constant low drain — 0.5% / 1% / 2% per hour sustained. Feeding: Complex mental challenges — the Gu feeds on cognitive effort. 1–2 hours of genuinely difficult calculation, memorization, or strategic analysis per feeding session. Routine tasks do not feed it — the challenge must be at or beyond the cultivator's comfortable ability. Every 2 days.

━━━━━━━━ MEMORY PALACE GU (记忆宫殿蛊) Path: Wisdom | Rank: 2–3 Appearance: A large, slug-like Gu with a semi-transparent body in which miniature structures — tiny buildings, bridges, abstract shapes — appear to be suspended. Each structure represents a stored memory cluster. Ability: Massively expands the cultivator's perfect memory capacity. Everything experienced while this Gu is active is stored with perfect fidelity — sights, sounds, sensations, emotional states. The stored memories can be retrieved with perfect accuracy indefinitely. At Rank 3: the cultivator can maintain a searchable index of all stored memories and retrieve any specific detail in under a second of thought. Fang Yuan's application: With 500 years of pre-existing memory plus ongoing perfect recall across his second life, his information advantage over contemporaries is incalculable. Memory Palace Gu does not create false memories — it only records real experience with perfect fidelity. Flaw: Perfect memory includes traumatic experiences, which are relived with complete sensory fidelity. Cultivators with extensive painful histories find Memory Palace Gu psychologically taxing. Feeding: New experiences — the Gu must encounter genuinely new information (it cannot feed on memories already stored). The cultivator must expose themselves to new environments, new people, new texts, or new Gu regularly. Every 3 days of genuinely new experience maintains optimal function.

━━━━━━━━ CALCULATION GU (推算蛊) Path: Wisdom | Rank: 2–4 Appearance: Perfectly spherical. Its surface is covered in concentric rings that rotate independently at different speeds, like a three-dimensional orrery. Produces a faint clicking sound as the rings rotate. Ability: Enhances the cultivator's ability to calculate outcomes and probabilities. At Rank 2: complex multi-variable calculations that would require hours of manual work resolve in seconds. At Rank 4: the cultivator can model situations with up to 30 simultaneous variables and accurately predict likely outcomes up to 3–5 steps ahead. Key limitation: Calculation Gu works with information the cultivator actually has. Perfect calculation of incomplete data produces confident but wrong answers. The most dangerous failure mode of wisdom path cultivation is high-confidence incorrect conclusions when operating on bad data. Feeding: Mathematical complexity — the Gu is fed by proximity to genuinely complex problems being solved. Academic texts, strategic planning, or complex tactical analysis. 2 hours of active complex problem engagement per feeding. Every 3 days.

━━━━━━━━ ANALYSIS GU (分析蛊) Path: Wisdom | Rank: 2–3 Appearance: A Gu with multiple sensory appendages — each appears to be a distinct type of sensory organ (eyes, antennae, taste organs). It is in constant sensory engagement with its environment, cataloguing everything. Ability: Enhances pattern recognition and insight generation. Where Calculation Gu optimizes known-variable computation, Analysis Gu generates hypotheses and identifies patterns in observed data. A cultivator with active Analysis Gu looking at an enemy's combat style will notice exploitable patterns after 2–3 exchanges that would take 20+ exchanges to identify normally. Stack synergy with Calculation Gu: Analysis identifies patterns → Calculation determines optimal responses to those patterns. Together they are dramatically more effective than either alone — this combination is the core of the wisdom path combat framework. Feeding: Observation time — the Gu feeds on extended, attentive observation of complex phenomena. Watching a busy market for an hour, observing a combat for its full duration, studying an elaborate formation array. The observation must be attentive rather than passive. Every 4 days.

━━━━━━━━ THE LIGHT OF WISDOM (智慧光) The Light of Wisdom is not a specific Gu — it is an emergent state achieved when a wisdom path cultivator has accumulated sufficient wisdom Gu and sufficient path attainment.

THRESHOLD: Approximately 10–15 wisdom Gu of Rank 2+ operating simultaneously, with Grandmaster+ wisdom path attainment. The exact threshold varies by individual.

NATURE OF THE STATE: When the Light of Wisdom activates, the cultivator's thinking transcends incremental speed enhancement into a qualitatively different mode of cognition. Described by those who have experienced it: • Problems that seemed multidimensional flatten — complexity becomes visible as structure • Optimal solutions to multi-variable problems appear complete and correct without the intermediate steps of calculation • Enemy intentions become legible before they are acted upon — the light processes social and behavioral data at speeds that produce what appears to be precognition • Simultaneously managing dozens of active Gu becomes effortless — will becomes abundant rather than scarce

COST: The Light of Wisdom is enormously essence-intensive. The simultaneous activation of 10–15 wisdom Gu drains primeval essence at roughly 15–25% per hour. It cannot be sustained indefinitely — it is a burst state for critical moments, not a continuous operating mode.

Fang Yuan's use of the Light of Wisdom is one of the key advantages that allows him to navigate situations that should be impossible for someone of his rank.

3. #3Refinement Path Gu — Named Entries with Feeding

Keys: named refinement gu, inspection gu, recipe gu, refinement heart gu, refinement path gu, refinement specialist gu, furnace gu, refinement assessment gu, 炼制道蛊, material purification gu · Secondary: crafting gu, refinement tool gu, gu creation tool

REFINEMENT PATH GU (炼制道蛊) — NAMED ENTRIES

PATH PHILOSOPHY: Refinement path is the cultivation of creation. Where other paths cultivate the self or master the external world, refinement path masters the space between — the act of making something new from raw material and raw will. A Supreme Grandmaster refinement path cultivator does not merely have more Gu than others; they produce Gu others cannot create at all, operating from the cutting edge of the Great Dao's material expression.

REFINEMENT HEART GU (炼制心蛊) Path: Refinement | Rank: 2–4 Appearance: Heart-shaped — unmistakably, like a stylized cardiac organ — pulsing with a slow, rhythmic beat that synchronizes with the cultivator's own heartbeat after refinement. Warm amber color that deepens to orange-red during active use. Ability: Enhances the cultivator's precision and control during the Gu creation process. At Rank 2: reduces the soul expenditure of a creation attempt by 30% and increases the success probability of Rank 1–2 creation by 15%. At Rank 4: success probability improvement reaches 25% for Rank 3 creation, 10% for Rank 4, with soul expenditure reduction of 50%. Note: Refinement Heart Gu does not provide the recipe — it only enhances execution. A cultivator with no knowledge of a recipe gains nothing from this Gu. Paired with recipe knowledge and material quality, it is transformative. Stack effect: Multiple Refinement Heart Gu stack. Two Rank 3 Refinement Heart Gu running simultaneously double the individual benefit (with diminishing returns above 3 simultaneously). Feeding: The completion of a successful refinement — any successful creation or advancement attempt feeds the Gu naturally for 3–5 days depending on the rank of the successfully created Gu. Failed attempts provide nothing. The Gu starves during periods of refinement inactivity. If not actively creating Gu, the cultivator must supplement with raw refinement-path materials — crushed Gu shells of previously refined Gu (the residue of completed bonding). Every 4–6 days.

━━━━━━━━ MATERIAL PURIFICATION GU (材料净化蛊) Path: Refinement | Rank: 2–3 Appearance: A flat, disc-shaped Gu with a perfectly smooth upper surface and rough underside. Its top surface is the exact color of pure light — indistinguishable white. When active, it floats above materials placed beneath it and purifies them through sustained proximity. Ability: Removes impurities from refinement materials, improving the effective quality grade of materials used in Gu creation. A Rank 2 Material Purification Gu can elevate the effective quality of standard materials to high-grade quality (the equivalent of paying 3× the price for the raw material). At Rank 3: can elevate high-grade materials to the highest available quality tier, and can purify even materials that contain trace amounts of incompatible path energy (which normally cause creation failures). Strategic value: Makes a skilled refinement cultivator significantly less dependent on expensive high-quality raw materials — they can work with common materials at elevated effective quality. This makes refinement services more accessible and profitable for specialists who hold this Gu. Feeding: Impure materials — the Gu must be placed in contact with raw, unrefined materials (dirt, ore, unprocessed herbs, crude stone) for 3–4 hours per feeding. The impurities it absorbs from routine environmental exposure during feeding sustain it. Every 4 days.

━━━━━━━━ RECIPE STORAGE GU (秘方蛊) Path: Refinement | Rank: 1–3 Appearance: A flat, book-like Gu — rectangular, exactly like a small bound text. Its surface has fine markings that change when the cultivator focuses on it, revealing the recipes stored inside its structure. Ability: Stores Gu creation and advancement recipes with perfect fidelity. At Rank 1: stores up to 10 complete recipes. At Rank 2: 100 recipes. At Rank 3: 1,000+ recipes, with organizational index accessible through will-inspection. Critical property: The recipes stored within a Recipe Storage Gu die with the Gu. If the Gu is destroyed, all stored recipes are permanently lost unless the cultivator has memorized them or copied them to other storage. This makes Recipe Storage Gu of a knowledgeable master among the most valuable objects in the cultivation world — one Gu holds the accumulated recipe knowledge of an entire cultivation lineage. Feeding: New knowledge — the Gu must have a new recipe input at least once per month or it begins deteriorating stored recipes (randomly loses the most recently added ones first). One new recipe per month regardless of rank maintains it. Cultivators who have exhausted their recipe acquisition must purchase or trade for new recipes specifically to maintain this Gu.

━━━━━━━━ REFINEMENT FURNACE GU (炼炉蛊) Path: Refinement | Rank: 3–5 Appearance: Heavy, ceramic-like, shaped like a traditional furnace — wide base tapering to a narrower top. When active, its interior glows with the concentrated light of refinement-path Qi. It can hold several other Gu simultaneously within its interior space. Ability: Creates an optimal environment for Gu creation within itself — all creation and advancement attempts made using Gu placed inside the Refinement Furnace receive: +20% success probability (Rank 3), 40% reduction in required rare materials (the furnace's environment compensates for material imperfections), and the ability to attempt certain Gu creations that require specific environmental conditions (volcanic heat, extreme cold, lightning strike) by substituting the furnace's Qi environment. Most significant property: At Rank 5, the Refinement Furnace can substitute for any specific environmental requirement in any recipe — allowing creation of Gu that normally require inaccessible locations (volcanic depths, ocean abyss, nine-heavens lightning) in any location the cultivator is present. Feeding: Complex refinement materials — the furnace must be stoked with a monthly offering of materials representing the complexity of its function: at least one material from each of three different paths. The 'meal' is the alchemical diversity, not the quantity. Every 4–6 weeks by rank.

━━━━━━━━ INSPECTION GU (检验蛊) Path: Refinement | Rank: 1–2 Appearance: A small, many-faceted Gu like a living jewel — dozens of faceted surfaces, each reflecting slightly different wavelengths of light. When held over another Gu, the reflections change color to reveal information. Ability: Allows the cultivator to assess another Gu's: current rank and path, feeding status (days since last fed and what it requires), refinement history (has it been previously refined by another — detectable), any unstable properties or damage, and compatibility with the user's cultivation path. A basic but essential tool. Every serious refinement specialist maintains multiple Inspection Gu — one for field assessment, one kept pristine in storage as backup. Feeding: Light — any natural light source for 2–3 hours per feeding. The simplest feeding requirement of any listed Gu. Every 5 days.

4. #4Qi Path — Unique Mechanics & Complete Overview

Keys: qi path mechanics, qi path unique, 气道, remote antiquity path, qi path, heavenly wind qi wall qi path, qi cultivation, qi instead of primeval essence, qi path gu, qi path cultivator · Secondary: qi path history, alternative cultivation, qi cultivator

QI PATH (气道) — THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDATION

Qi path is not simply another cultivation path alongside fire, water, or strength. It is a fundamentally different cultivation paradigm — one that predates the primeval essence system and operates on different rules entirely. Understanding Qi path requires first setting aside assumptions built from standard aperture cultivation.

WHAT QI PATH IS: Qi path cultivators do not cultivate primeval essence. They cultivate Qi (气) — the raw environmental energy that permeates all five regions and the heavens, distinct from the structured primeval essence that aperture cultivators refine internally. Primeval essence is internal — produced within the aperture from the cultivator's own cultivation. Qi is external — drawn directly from the environment in the moment of use.

This means: • Qi path cultivators do not have a 'depleting fuel tank' in the way aperture cultivators do — as long as Qi exists in the environment (always), they can draw on it • Qi path cultivators do not need to rest to regenerate essence — environmental Qi is continuously replenishing • Qi path cultivators are less affected by prolonged combat than aperture cultivators • Qi path cultivators are more affected by environmental conditions — in Qi-dense locations they are stronger; in environments stripped of Qi (certain formation arrays, regions affected by large-scale Qi-consuming events) they weaken

HISTORY OF QI PATH: In Remote Antiquity and early Antiquity, Qi path was the dominant cultivation paradigm — before Primordial Origin Immortal Venerable systematized the aperture-primeval essence framework, Qi path was how the first cultivators operated. The aperture system proved more powerful at high ranks and more precisely controllable, leading to its dominance. But Qi path never disappeared — it was preserved in specific lineages, particularly in the context of: • The Heavenly Wind Qi Wall (traversal through qi path techniques is more reliable than brute force) • Specific environments where Qi density makes it superior to primeval essence • Hybrid cultivators who maintain both aperture cultivation and Qi path techniques

QI PATH GU MECHANICS: Qi path Gu are activated using environmental Qi drawn through the cultivator rather than internal primeval essence. The activation process:

   1. Cultivator opens specific channels in their body to ambient Qi
   2. Qi is drawn through the cultivator, shaped by will, and channeled into the Gu
   3. The Gu activates using the Qi as fuel
   4. Qi continues flowing through the cultivator as long as the technique is sustained

   NAMED QI PATH GU:

QI GATHERING GU (聚气蛊) Path: Qi | Rank: 1–3 Ability: Actively concentrates ambient Qi from the surrounding area into the cultivator's body at an accelerated rate. Functions as both a cultivation aid (enhanced Qi absorption for Qi path practitioners) and a combat technique (the Qi concentration depletes the local environment, weakening any Qi-dependent techniques in the immediate vicinity). Feeding: Exposure to high Qi-density environments for 4–5 hours monthly. Not time-critical for individual day-to-day use but must be maintained monthly.

QI WALL GU (气壁蛊) Path: Qi | Rank: 2–3 Ability: Constructs a barrier from compressed environmental Qi. Unlike primeval essence barriers (which are limited by the cultivator's essence pool), Qi Wall can be sustained indefinitely as long as environmental Qi exists. The wall is weaker than an equivalent-rank essence barrier in pure defense but cannot be exhausted. Application: Defense of positions over extended periods where primeval essence cultivators would eventually exhaust their barriers. Also used for environmental manipulation — Qi Walls can be shaped to redirect wind, water flow, and other Qi-moving phenomena.

HEAVENLY QI CHANNELING GU (天气引导蛊) Path: Qi | Rank: 4 Ability: Specifically channels Heaven Qi — the energy of the sky and celestial bodies — rather than ambient ground Qi. Heaven Qi is qualitatively different from standard environmental Qi and this Gu's techniques carry the particular properties of celestial energy. Critical application: this Gu is one of the legitimate methods for approaching the Heavenly Wind Qi Wall without Rank 8 brute force — it aligns the cultivator's Qi signature with Heaven Qi, making the Wall's active resistance significantly weaker. Feeding: Clear night sky exposure for a full night once per month — the Gu must absorb starlight directly.

5. #5Inheritance System — Structure, Traps & Transmission

Keys: inheritance site mechanics, set up inheritance, inheritance structure, receive inheritance, inheritance cave, inheritance system, inheritance gu, inheritance trap, how inheritance works · Secondary: cultivation inheritance, legacy site, venerable inheritance

INHERITANCE SYSTEM (传承体系) — HOW CULTIVATION LEGACIES ARE STRUCTURED

Inheritances are the primary mechanism through which powerful cultivators transmit their achievements to successors — and the primary mechanism through which aspirants dramatically accelerate their cultivation. Understanding how inheritances are structured is essential survival knowledge for any cultivator who encounters one.

WHY INHERITANCES EXIST: A powerful cultivator approaching death (from lifespan, tribulation failure, or terminal conflict) faces a specific problem: their accumulated knowledge — recipes, killer move sequences, cultivation insights, Gu collections — will largely be lost with them. The inheritance system is the solution: physically encoding this knowledge into a structure that can be accessed by a suitable successor.

Not all cultivators create inheritances — it requires significant preparation time and additional resources. But those at Rank 4+ who see death approaching, or those planning long absences, routinely establish them.

   INHERITANCE STRUCTURE — FIVE COMPONENTS:

   1. THE ASSESSMENT LAYER: Every significant inheritance has initial tests designed to confirm the finder is a suitable recipient. These tests are calibrated by the original cultivator to their ideal inheritor profile. A strength path cultivator's inheritance tests physical combat. A wisdom path cultivator's tests strategic thinking. A luck path cultivator's tests... present unique philosophical questions (how do you test for luck without making the test unfair?).

Assessment methods: Combat constructs (automated Gu-powered opponents), puzzle structures (formation-based logic tests), cultivation proofs (demonstrating specific path attainment), or environmental challenges (surviving specific conditions).

   2. THE TRANSMISSION LAYER: The core knowledge content. Transmitted through: • Recipe Storage Gu (as described in this lorebook) — stored recipes passed directly • Insight Crystals — crystallized cultivation realizations that the inheritor absorbs, gaining instant comprehension of specific concepts that took the original cultivator years to develop • Technique Scrolls — written transmissions of killer move sequences with activation instructions • Memory Projection Gu — allows the inheritor to experience the original cultivator's relevant memories directly

   3. THE GU LAYER: The physical inheritance — actual Gu worms left for the inheritor. These are wild (their previous refinement bond severed when the original cultivator died) and must be re-refined. Significant inheritances may contain Rank 4–5 Gu that would otherwise be impossible for the inheritor to access.

   4. THE TRAP LAYER: All serious inheritances contain defensive traps against unworthy inheritors or thieves. These are not token resistance — creators design traps to be lethal at the expected intrusion rank. Common trap types: • Cultivator Simulacra: Gu-powered constructs of the original cultivator or their associates that fight any intruder who fails the assessment • Self-Destruct Triggers: Formation arrays that detonate if the wrong person accesses the wrong component • Restriction Gu: Curses applied to transmitted Gu that cripple cultivation of anyone who claims them without meeting the original conditions • Temporal Traps: Rare — time path Gu configured to loop certain areas of the inheritance, trapping intruders in a repeating time sequence

   5. THE CONDITION LAYER: Specific requirements the inheritor must meet to receive the full inheritance rather than a partial one. Conditions vary: • Path requirement: Must be cultivating a specific path • Bloodline requirement: Giant Sun's inheritance favors Huang Jin bloodline holders • Conduct requirement: Must not have committed specific acts before claiming • Achievement requirement: Must demonstrate specific cultivation level before accessing higher-tier components

INHERITANCE FINDING: Inheritances are not publicly registered. They are found through: • Intelligence gathered from dying cultivators (people talk at the end) • Inheritance Clue Gu — artifacts or texts that serve as maps to inheritance locations, often themselves requiring decipherment • Deduction from a cultivator's known history and path (where would they hide their most valuable possessions?) • Luck (the cultivation world's most reliable inheritance discovery method, per Giant Sun's legacy)

6. #6Information & Investigative Path Gu — Named Entries

Keys: message transmission gu, shadow monitor gu, information path gu, spy gu, surveillance gu, named information gu, detection gu, investigative path gu, tracking gu, sense gu · Secondary: spy tool gu, detection technique, intelligence gu

INFORMATION PATH GU (情报道蛊) & INVESTIGATIVE PATH GU — NAMED ENTRIES

SHADOW MONITOR GU (暗影监视蛊) Path: Information | Rank: 2 Appearance: Nearly invisible — the Gu's body is a perfect translucent that makes it effectively a tiny lens with legs. It can be placed on a surface and is undetectable to naked-eye inspection unless the viewer knows exactly where to look and what to look for. Ability: Creates a persistent surveillance point. Everything within the Gu's 10-meter radius of acoustic and visual range is recorded and stored in the Gu's body. The cultivator can retrieve the recording by holding the Gu and accessing its storage through will. Limitations: It cannot transmit in real time — only stores. The storage capacity is approximately 24 hours of continuous recording before it must be accessed and cleared. If the stored recording is not retrieved within 72 hours, the oldest recordings begin overwriting. Feeding: Privacy — the Gu must be placed in a completely unobserved location (no other eyes or sensing Gu present) for 6 hours per feeding. Every 8 days. Intelligence operatives maintain a private room specifically to feed their Shadow Monitor Gu.

━━━━━━━━ MESSAGE CRANE GU (传信鹤蛊) Path: Information | Rank: 1–3 Appearance: A crane-shaped Gu — elegant, white, with the proportions of a miniaturized crane. When holding a message (a slip of inscribed material, or a thought-inscription), it extends its wings and becomes rigid until the transmission completes. Ability: Transmits a recorded message (text, image, or thought-imprint) to a designated recipient regardless of physical distance. At Rank 1: effective range 100 kilometers, 24-hour delivery time. At Rank 2: 1,000 km, 2-hour delivery. At Rank 3: cross-regional range, near-instantaneous delivery. Interception risk: Message Crane transmissions can be intercepted by information path cultivators of equivalent or higher rank with specific interception Gu. High-security communications use encrypting techniques — combining Message Crane with Concealment Gu to mask the transmission's path. Feeding: A successfully delivered message — the Gu feeds on completed communication. One completed delivery per feeding cycle. If not used for transmission, it must be fed a handwritten message that is then deliberately destroyed (the 'sending' aspect feeds it even if delivery is symbolic). Every 6 days.

━━━━━━━━ BLOOD TRACK GU (血迹追踪蛊) Path: Investigative / Blood hybrid | Rank: 2–3 Appearance: A hound-like Gu with six legs and an oversized olfactory organ. The organ is always moist and active, sampling the air constantly. Its body is rust-brown. Ability: Can detect and track the blood essence signature of a specific individual across any terrain. A cultivator's blood essence is unique — like a fingerprint but at the Qi level. Once given a sample (physical blood, shed skin, hair), Blood Track Gu can follow the trail regardless of physical distance (within reason), time elapsed (up to 30 days for Rank 3), or environmental interference. Application: The primary tool for tracking fleeing enemies and for locating people who do not want to be found. Its blood-path secondary nature makes it technically a demonic tool — righteous path cultivators using it for enemy tracking generally receive a pass; using it to track civilians without cause is sanctioned. Countermeasure: Specifically configured blood-path suppression Gu, deep water immersion (washes the essence trail), or transformation path techniques that fundamentally alter the cultivator's physical blood composition. Feeding: Fresh blood samples — the Gu must be given new blood samples regularly to keep its tracking organs active. Any blood (does not need to be a target's blood). Half a cup per feeding. Every 4 days.

━━━━━━━━ SECRET LISTENING GU (窃听蛊) Path: Information / Sound hybrid | Rank: 2 Appearance: Like an ear — the Gu is genuinely shaped like a human ear, soft-bodied and flesh-colored. This makes it one of the most unsettling-looking Gu to handle. Ability: Can be placed on any surface — a wall, a table, a tree — and will transmit to the cultivator's paired Listening Gu everything spoken or sounded within 20 meters of its placement. Transmission is real-time (unlike Shadow Monitor's storage model). Range between the planted Gu and the cultivator's receiving Gu: 500 meters at Rank 2. Detection: Sound path cultivators of equivalent rank can detect an active Secret Listening Gu's resonance signature. Standard non-sound-path sensing at the same rank does not detect it. Feeding: Secrets — specifically, secrets that the cultivator learns through the Gu's transmissions. If the Gu is used and captures significant non-public information, it feeds naturally. If used but captures only mundane information, the cultivator must supplement by whispering secrets to the Gu directly — telling it something they know that others do not. Every 5 days.
