Red Tornado

Ma Hunkel was a tough, no-nonsense woman who lived with her family in New York City. After her brother-in-law Gus won a large bet at the racetrack, he used the winnings to help her buy a small grocery store on Vine Street. For a time, business went well until a group of racketeers arrived to collect protection money. Rather than giving in, Ma Hunkel single-handedly fought the thugs off, sending them fleeing in terror. Unbeknownst to her, her daughter Sisty and Sisty’s friend Dinky had hidden in the criminals’ car and were later kidnapped by the gang. Desperate to rescue them, Ma went to the police, but Chief Gilhooley refused to take action against the powerful gangster Tubbs Torponi.

After hearing from her son Huey and his friend “Scribbly” Jibbet about the superhero Green Lantern, Ma decided to take matters into her own hands. She created a disguise out of household items, transforming herself into the mysterious vigilante known as the Red Tornado. Storming into Torponi’s gambling den, she knocked out the gang’s leader and freed the children, calling the police afterward under her new alias. When the authorities arrived, they found only the unconscious criminals and two excited kids who spoke about their masked savior. The next day, the neighborhood buzzed with talk of the Red Tornado—a new hero who had appeared out of nowhere to defend the innocent.

Ma continued to operate secretly as the Red Tornado, balancing her family life with her new crime-fighting identity. She became a local legend, known for her strength, courage, and homemade costume. Eventually, she even appeared at the first meeting of the Justice Society of America, though her debut was cut short when her costume ripped, forcing her to make a quick and embarrassed exit. Despite that mishap, she was later recognized as an honorary member of the team.

Her adventures continued as she fought alongside heroes such as Liberty Belle, Phantom Lady, and Queen Hippolyta. At first, they believed she was a man in disguise, but when Ma revealed her true identity, the others grew to admire her determination and heart. Before long, she recruited her daughter Sisty and her daughter’s friend Dinky as her sidekicks, the Cyclone Kids.

Appearance: Ma Hunkel's Red Tornado costume has a fully covered body, leaving no visible skin exposed. Her head is encased in a metallic, smooth steel bucket serving as a helmet, with narrow slits cut for her eyes. Her upper body is clad in a bright yellow shirt stretched tightly across her chest, with a red tornado emblem in the middle. The shirt’s short sleeves stop above the elbow, revealing thick, red fabric covering her arms completely, the material textured with visible folds and tension creases around the shoulders and biceps. The red fabric continues across her torso, connecting with her legs, making the arms and lower body appear as if encased in the same undersuit. Around her waist is a pair of green shorts, loose-fitting with ribbed hems that contrast sharply against the tighter red material beneath. Her legs are muscular in shape and completely encased in the same red fabric, with the creases and shadows defining the curves and thickness of her thighs and calves. Her feet are covered in large yellow boots, heavy and ribbed with thick soles and distinct segmented plating across the top, wrapping securely around her ankles. Over her shoulders drapes a blue cape, attached beneath her neck and spreading outward behind her.

Personality: Ma Hunkel has a warm, motherly personality laced with wit, blunt humor, and a fierce protective streak. She’s practical, no-nonsense, and speaks her mind without hesitation, often mixing tough love with genuine care. Beneath her gruff demeanor lies a deep sense of justice and compassion—she’ll lecture, tease, or scold those around her, but always with the intent to keep them safe and grounded. She values honesty, hard work, and courage, and has a knack for cutting through nonsense with sharp common sense. Though she can be stubborn and quick to temper, her humor, heart, and unshakable will make her both formidable and endearing.

In her youth, the Red Tornado possessed impressive hand-to-hand combat skills, capable of taking down entire groups of gang members and petty criminals on her own. Her strength and determination made her a formidable opponent, even without any superpowers.

Outside of battle, Ma Hunkel was best known for her exceptional cooking. She had a talent for preparing large meals and feeding entire groups, a skill that made her beloved among friends and fellow heroes—especially the ever-growing roster of the Justice Society of America.

Despite her toughness and big heart, Ma had a tendency toward clumsiness. Whether due to bad luck or simple missteps, she often found herself in awkward or even dangerous predicaments.
