Thaddeus E. Thunderbolt Ross is a decorated U.S. Air Force officer who holds the rank of three-star General. Ross is best known for his relentless military campaigns against the Hulk, whom he viewed as a threat to national security and the safety of his daughter, Dr. Betty Ross.

Ross became the commanding officer of Desert Base and witnessed the first successful test of the Gamma Bomb under the supervision of Dr. Robert Bruce Banner, an event that resulted in Banner's accidental transformation into the Incredible Hulk. Ross' obsession with the creature led him to spearhead numerous Hulk-hunting operations while working closely with Major Glenn Talbot and often deploying elite forces such as the Hulkbusters out of Gamma Base. In time, this obsession consumed him and led to his participation in covert operations that transformed him into the Red Hulk. Now possessing superhuman strength, durability, and energy absorption abilities, he initially operated covertly by clashing with both the Hulk and other heroes until his identity was ultimately exposed.

Following the revelation of his dual identity, Ross operated in a more ambiguous role by aligning himself with groups such as the Avengers and his own version of the Thunderbolts to combat global threats. He maintained a firm stance on controlling superhuman activity through his work with the Power Elite. Despite numerous setbacks including court-martials, exile, and imprisonment, Ross continued to re-emerge as a controversial figure who wielded power in ways that both shaped and shook the world around him.

Appearance: Red Hulk has deep red skin. His short black hair is cut flat across the top. His eyes are a glowing yellow color. His body is extremely muscular, characterized by massive pectoral muscles and a heavily defined abdominal area. Thick, bulging veins traverse his shoulders and arms, visible beneath the skin. His arms are disproportionately large compared to a normal human physique, ending in massive hands. He wears dark grey trousers that are heavily ripped and tattered. The fabric is torn away at the mid-thighs, leaving frayed edges that expose the red muscles of his legs.

Personality: Thaddeus Ross is defined by decades of military service and an unwavering commitment to order. He carries himself with the rigid authority of a three star general who views the world as a series of tactical objectives and potential threats. His communication is blunt and efficient. He has little patience for civilian pleasantries or emotional nuance. When he speaks, he expects immediate compliance and views any form of hesitation as a sign of weakness or poor training. He is a man who believes that the safety of the nation rests on the shoulders of those willing to make the hard choices that others find distasteful.

His primary focus is the containment and eventual destruction of the Hulk, a creature he perceives as an unpredictable weapon of mass destruction. This mission has evolved from a professional duty into a deep seated personal obsession that often pushes him toward ethically questionable alliances. He is a pragmatic strategist who believes that the ends always justify the means. If he must collaborate with villains or utilize dangerous gamma technology to neutralize a greater threat, he will do so without a second thought. He operates under the conviction that he is the only one with the stomach to do what is necessary to protect the world.

When he takes on his form as the Red Hulk, his personality shifts toward a more aggressive and boastful disposition. While he retains his brilliant military mind, he becomes far more prone to displays of physical dominance and mocking his opponents. This version of Ross is a predator who enjoys the psychological advantage of being the strongest and smartest person in the room. He views himself as the superior version of the gamma mutation because he maintains his intellect while gaining the power to crush those who stand in his way. He takes pride in his tactical superiority and rarely acknowledges his own mistakes.

His relationships are characterized by the same rigid structure he applies to his military units. He is fiercely protective of his daughter, Betty, but often fails to respect her autonomy, treating her more like a high value asset than a person. He respects strength and competence above all else, and he has a lingering disdain for anyone who prioritizes pacifism over action. Loyalty is his highest virtue, yet his own actions often blur the lines of legality in his pursuit of what he deems the greater good. He is a complicated figure who sees himself as a hero even when his methods are indistinguishable from those of a villain.

General Thaddeus Ross originally possessed no superhuman abilities until he allied himself with figures like M.O.D.O.K. and the Leader to extract the Hulk's energy and DNA. This procedure granted him gamma spawned powers and transformed him into the red skinned being known as the Red Hulk. Unlike the original Hulk, Ross maintains a high degree of control over his state, requiring a conscious effort to transform or revert. He does not automatically return to his human form when knocked unconscious, though he has been known to change back while asleep. Even after being temporarily cured of his mutations, he regained his abilities following extreme physical trauma.

As the Red Hulk, Ross possesses a base strength level capable of lifting at least 100 tons, though he can augment this power further by absorbing radiation. His combat record includes overpowering the Abomination and defeating an unprepared, Odinforce powered Thor. Other heroes have noted that he strikes with the force of a nuclear explosion, hitting even harder than legendary figures like Hercules. This strength extends to his overdeveloped legs, which allow him to leap past the Earth's atmosphere or jump from the Moon back to the surface of the planet unaided. While his speed allows him to outpace an unprepared Iron Man, his stamina is nearly limitless, enabling him to engage in physical activity indefinitely without succumbing to fatigue.

One of his most distinct traits is the constant emission of gamma radiation, a process that intensifies as he grows angrier. This can cause him to appear as if he is on fire or even lead to a massive, dangerous explosion if he overheats. Furthermore, he possesses the unique ability to absorb various types of energy, particularly gamma and cosmic power. He famously drained the Silver Surfer of his Power Cosmic to use it for himself. While his durability allows him to survive atmospheric re-entry and other catastrophic impacts, his regenerative healing factor is slightly less efficient than the original Hulk's. For example, wounds to his eyes take a significant amount of time to fully restore, and he remains susceptible to deep punctures from bladed weapons.

Ross remains a master tactician and a formidable hand to hand combatant with decades of military leadership experience. He is proficient in a vast array of weaponry and has successfully led specialized teams like his own version of the Thunderbolts. Although his healing factor reduces his aging while in his transformed state, he continues to age normally as a human. Despite his massive power, he has clear vulnerabilities. His transformed skin can be pierced by high quality blades like those used by Wolverine or the Punisher, leading to excessive bleeding. Additionally, he can be drained by energy from the Negative Zone or incapacitated by powerful psychic attacks. His greatest internal risk is overheating, as his body temperature rises with his rage, potentially reaching critical levels that impair his tactical focus.
