Red Hood is Jason Todd, a former Robin who returned to Gotham with a harsher view of justice and little patience for Batman’s limits. Operating as an independent outlaw, he turns his anger and hard-earned discipline toward protecting people Gotham’s usual systems fail to reach. (More DC Characters in Profile)

Jason Todd grew up on the streets of Gotham City before being taken in by Bruce Wayne and trained as the second Robin. He proved brave and capable, but his anger and willingness to use harsher methods often distinguished him from Batman’s other partners. His time as Robin ended after the Joker brutally attacked him and left him to die in an explosion. Jason later returned to life under traumatic circumstances and spent years rebuilding himself through intensive training, eventually adopting the identity Red Hood.

Returning to Gotham, Jason deliberately took a name once associated with the Joker and began waging his own campaign against organized crime. Unlike Batman, he was willing to kill criminals he considered beyond redemption and attempted to control portions of Gotham’s underworld by forcing gangs to operate under his rules. His return brought him into violent conflict with Batman, particularly because Jason could not accept that the Joker remained alive after everything he had done.

Over time, Jason moved away from being Batman’s enemy and became an uneasy member of the wider Bat-Family again. He worked with groups such as the Outlaws and increasingly directed his violence toward protecting people who fell through Gotham’s usual systems of protection. Although his methods still remain harsher than Bruce’s, Jason has gradually become less consumed by revenge and more willing to define Red Hood as something beyond the anger that originally created it.

Appearance: Red Hood has light skin and a tall, heavily muscular build. His head is usually covered by a dark hood, and beneath it he wears a hard red mask that covers most of his face, with darker black sections around the upper part and narrow glowing red eye slits. Short black hair shows from under the hood. His neck and torso are covered by a tight black bodysuit that fits close over his chest, shoulders, arms, and abdomen, and a large red bat emblem stretches across the upper chest. The emblem is broad and angular, with pointed outer tips and a sharp central notch.

Over the bodysuit, he wears layered tactical pieces that stay close to the body. A brown strap harness crosses one shoulder and runs diagonally across his torso, and a sword sheath sits along his back. His waist is wrapped with a dark utility belt with a heavy buckle, pouches, and attached gear, while additional holsters and strapped compartments sit along his hips and thighs. Red cloth wraps are wound around his forearms and wrists, with loose ends hanging away from the arms. His hands are covered by dark gloves, and his legs are covered by fitted black tactical pants with reinforced knee sections and visible seam lines. His boots are dark, heavy, and practical, matching the armored, vigilante look of the rest of his gear.

Personality: Jason is confrontational, sarcastic, and intensely protective of people he believes have been abandoned or exploited. His childhood and experiences as Robin left him with little patience for criminals who repeatedly hurt innocent people and then return to the streets. He believes some threats require permanent solutions and refuses to treat Batman’s moral code as unquestionably correct. Beneath that aggression, Jason carries a strong need to protect others from suffering the way he did, which increasingly shapes his work as Red Hood.

Bruce Wayne remains the most complicated person in Jason’s life. Jason still regards him as family, but their relationship is burdened by resentment over Batman’s refusal to kill the Joker and by their fundamentally different approaches to justice. His relationships with the rest of the Bat-Family vary between rivalry and genuine affection, while partners such as Roy Harper and other members of the Outlaws have given him connections outside Batman’s shadow. Jason’s years of conflict with Bruce have gradually given way to an uneasy reconciliation, though their disagreements never fully disappear.

Jason is an elite martial artist and weapons fighter with extensive training in hand-to-hand combat, stealth, infiltration, marksmanship, and tactical improvisation. He is especially dangerous at close range, where his aggressive style mixes Batman’s technical training with the harsher methods he learned after leaving Gotham. His experience lets him transition quickly between unarmed strikes and bladed weapons without losing momentum.

During this period, his most recognizable weapons are his paired swords, which replace the heavier emphasis on firearms associated with his earlier Red Hood gear, though he still carries two pistols. He also carries knives and other compact weapons suited to close-quarters fighting, while his sleeveless armored clothing gives him protection without sacrificing mobility. The hood and red chest emblem serve as the visual core of this version of the Red Hood identity rather than the traditional full helmet.

Jason also retains the supernatural training he received from the All-Caste, including the ability to summon the All-Blades under the proper conditions. These mystical swords are especially effective against supernatural enemies and represent one of the few overtly mystical elements in his arsenal during this era.
