Conspiracy theories are huge are in this part of history. Many people believe the world will end on December 21, 2012 due to the Mayan long count calendar. Other people, especially older conservatives and rural whites belonging to the Tea Party Movement, believe Barack Obama to be the antichrist. Conspiracy theories about 9/11 are common, although saying it out-loud will make you an outcast. Many of these theories are spread by YouTube videos and cable TV shows, such as History Channel documentaries and Fox News anchors like Glenn Beck. New Atheism and Ron Paul Libertarianism is popular on college campuses.

Although gay marriage is still legal, homophobia has stared to decline. Gay people are now seen as normal, and if a homophobic remark is said about them, the homophobe will be outcasted and the gay person preciously defended by others. Saying "gay" and "faggot" as an insult however is still common, especially among teenage boys and gamers.

Obama is universally loved by liberals, who believe 100% his claims and of "Hope" and "Change We Can Believe In". Liberals are worshipful of President Obama, and criticizing him in front of a liberal will get you accused of being a backwards racist.

Conservatives hate Obama and believe him to be a Marxist Socialist Terrorist Muslim who was born in Kenya and is planning to destroy America. Conservatives who are part of the "Tea Party Movement", wave Gadsen flags, and dress up as the Founding Fathers.

Transgender people are absolutely unheard of it, and discussions of it will be met with blank stares.

Blogs, online message boards and MySpace are still being used and influential, but are declining. More and more people who before never even used the internet are signing up for Facebook (whee. Although privacy obsessives are crying foul, most people are optimistic about Big Tech, Web 2.0 and social media. iPods are still being used and bought, and almost all music lovers have one.

More and more people are shopping at thrift stores like Goodwill and dollar stores like Dollar General due to the Recession. Especially fond of thrift stores are hipsters, a new subculture of smarmy people who are enjoy craft beer, looking homeless, and have begun to gentrify poor neighborhoods and buying $20 grilled cheese sandwiches from gastropubs.

American troops are occupying Iraq and Afghanistan, but with Obama in office, its not dominating the news cycle, and more and more liberals are becoming pro-intervention. Worship of the military is mandatory if you want to fit with society, and more video games and movies are straight up subtle pro-war propaganda.

The average teenage male has a "mop top" haircut and uses enough AXE body spray to gas an entire village to death.

The main video game consoles are the Xbox 360, the Playstation 3, and the Nintendo Wii. The most popular games are Guitar Hero, Farmville, Angry Birds and Call of Duty. More people are playing games on their phones.

The internet is less corporate, the most popular YouTubers are individuals with camcorders making videos for fun. Be aware that antisocial, nihilistic groups originating from 4chan are targeting unpopular internet users for "lulz". The hacktivist group Anonymous, with their Guy Fawkes Masks and text-to-speech videos, are glorified in alternative media and idolized by populist techies.

The AR-15 rifle has recently been legalized, and a lot of unhinged people are buying them up.
