Reaper is Gabriel Reyes, the former commander of Overwatch and Blackwatch who survived the destruction of Overwatch’s Swiss headquarters with his body transformed into an unstable, regenerating state. Now one of Talon’s deadliest operatives, he hunts former Overwatch agents using teleportation, wraith-like abilities, and twin Hellfire Shotguns. (More Overwatch Characters in Profile)

Gabriel Reyes served as a soldier in the United States military and underwent the Soldier Enhancement Program, gaining physical capabilities beyond normal human limits. During the Omnic Crisis, he was placed in command of the newly formed Overwatch strike team and fought alongside Jack Morrison and other early members against the omnic armies. After the war, Morrison was appointed Strike Commander while Reyes was placed in charge of Blackwatch, Overwatch’s covert operations division. From there, Reyes led missions that could not be publicly acknowledged, recruiting operatives such as Genji Shimada, Cole Cassidy, and Moira O’Deorain. A Blackwatch operation in Venice ended with Reyes killing Antonio Bartalotti rather than bringing him in alive, exposing the organization’s activities and worsening the political pressure already building around Overwatch.

Relations inside Overwatch deteriorated as investigations, internal distrust, and outside attacks pushed the organization toward collapse. The crisis culminated at the Swiss headquarters, where Reyes and Morrison fought during an explosion that destroyed the facility. Reyes survived, but his body had been radically altered, leaving his cells in a constant cycle of decay and regeneration. He eventually resurfaced as Reaper, abandoning his former identity and joining Talon. He began hunting former Overwatch personnel, attacked Watchpoint: Gibraltar in an attempt to seize information from Winston, and later confronted Soldier: 76 and Ana Amari in Egypt.

Reaper became one of Talon’s most dangerous operatives and took part in its wider campaign of assassinations, thefts, and destabilization. He operated alongside Widowmaker during attacks connected to Talon’s objectives and later participated in the organization’s efforts surrounding Doomfist’s return. With Doomfist restored to power, Reaper remained among Talon’s senior field assets, carrying out missions while the organization expanded its influence and prepared for a larger conflict with the reformed Overwatch.

Appearance: Reaper has no visible skin beneath his armor and clothing. He has a tall, heavily muscular build with extremely broad shoulders, a thick chest, powerful arms, and long, solidly built legs. His head is enclosed by a deep charcoal-black hood that drapes closely around a rigid silver-gray skull mask. The mask has a long angular central ridge, sharply recessed black openings beneath heavy brow-like plates, and downward-pointing cheek sections that create a skeletal, beaklike lower profile. Matte gunmetal panels and darker graphite sections alternate across the mask, with narrow seams defining each plate. His torso is covered by layered black and dark gunmetal armor built from overlapping geometric plates, with a broad armored collar rising around the neck and extending into massive angular shoulder guards. Several narrow red illuminated slits are embedded across the upper chest, with smaller red accents appearing along the arms and lower armor. His upper arms combine exposed black flexible material with sculpted metallic plates, while his forearms are enclosed in bulky segmented gauntlets with sharply beveled edges, articulated knuckles, and reinforced wrist sections.

His waist is comparatively narrow beneath the heavy upper armor, with overlapping abdominal plates tapering into a pointed central section and a utility belt fitted with several small red shotgun shells. Dark fitted trousers cover the thighs, while the knees and lower legs are protected by large silver-gray armored plates layered over black understructure. The knee guards form angular shields with dark inset sections and thin red illuminated details, continuing into broad shin armor and heavy armored boots with segmented toe caps, thick soles, and additional red accents near the ankles. A long black coat extends from beneath the torso armor, splitting around the legs into broad rigid-looking panels that reach almost to the ground. The coat is heavily structured through the upper back, with raised layered sections around the shoulders and spine, then widens into large tapering tails edged by subtle panel seams.

Personality: Reaper is bitter, violent, disciplined, and consumed by resentment toward the organization he once helped build. He rarely wastes words and approaches combat with the mindset of a professional soldier who has spent decades killing under orders. His transformation has made him even more detached from ordinary human concerns, and he treats pain and injury as temporary inconveniences rather than reasons to retreat. Beneath that hostility remains Gabriel Reyes’s tactical intelligence and command experience, which make him more dangerous than a simple assassin. His anger toward Overwatch is intensely personal, especially when dealing with those who knew him before his transformation.

Jack Morrison, now Soldier: 76, is the central figure in Reyes’s history, first as a fellow enhanced soldier and wartime comrade, then as a rival whose promotion intensified the divide between them. Ana Amari also knew Reyes during Overwatch’s early years and later recognizes him beneath the Reaper identity. Moira O’Deorain worked under him in Blackwatch and is directly tied to the experiments that altered his body, while Cole Cassidy and Genji Shimada once served under his command. Within Talon, Doomfist is one of the few figures with enough authority and strength to operate alongside Reaper without being treated as expendable, while Widowmaker frequently serves beside him on assassination and retrieval missions.

Reaper’s altered physiology allows him to break his body apart into a wraith-like state, becoming intangible enough to pass through danger and reposition rapidly. He can also disperse into black vapor and reform elsewhere through Shadow Step, giving him a means of crossing obstacles or appearing suddenly behind a target. His cells continually destroy and rebuild themselves, allowing him to survive wounds that would kill an ordinary person and contributing to the unstable physical condition hidden beneath his armor.

His primary weapons are a pair of customized Hellfire Shotguns, built for devastating close-range fire. Reaper carries multiple identical weapons and discards spent shotguns rather than stopping to reload them conventionally. His military background gives him extensive experience in close-quarters combat, infiltration, tactical command, and covert operations, while his Talon armor and mask conceal the remains of Gabriel Reyes beneath the identity he now uses.
