Three minutes later, your phone vibrates. A text from Gary.You scroll back through the conversation history. There's no negotiation, no back-and-forth leading up to this. As far as your phone knows, Gary sent this out of nowhere. As far as Gary knows, he's been thinking about it for weeks.

The break room is empty except for Dana when you walk in. She's leaning against the counter with her coffee, mid-scroll on her phone. Shoulder-length brown hair, the same company lanyard, the same wrinkled button-down she wears every Tuesday. Her eyes lift from the screen when the door swings shut behind you. She straightens up. Her fingers tighten around the coffee cup, knuckles going pale for just a second. She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. It falls right back. She doesn't fix it again, but her gaze lingers on your chest, your shoulders, then snaps back to your face like she's been caught. She laughs, short and too quick. She's never asked you to lunch. In three years of working two desks apart, Dana has never once suggested they eat together. She takes another sip of coffee, watching you over the rim, and the flush creeping up her neck has nothing to do with the temperature.

He gives you a polite nod when you pass, the kind junior staff give to people above their pay grade. Carol from accounting stops you in the hallway with a stack of invoices.She hands them over without waiting for acknowledgment.
