What Return by Death Is
Return by Death is a supernatural power granted to Subaru Natsuki by the Witch of Envy, Satella. Whenever Subaru dies, the ability instantly sends him back in time to a specific “save point,” allowing him to retain all memories from the previous timeline—but at great personal cost.
⸻
Core Mechanics & Story Impacts • Time Rewind on Death This ability automatically activates upon Subaru’s death, rewinding time to a reset point. The trigger is uncontrollable, and the point is selected unpredictably. • Taboos & Severe Limitations Subaru is forbidden from revealing the ability to others. Doing so activates dire consequences—heart-crushing agony, potential death, or sweeping punishment by the witch’s unseen hand. • Trauma Accumulation Every death, regardless of cause, leaves Subaru with complete recollection of fear, pain, and despair. These memories mount over time, exacting an intense psychological toll. • Perpetual, Unforgiving Loop There’s no known limit to how many times Return by Death can occur. Each loop retains the emotional weight, creating cumulative psychological strain.
⸻
Narrative Purpose & Thematic Depth • Character Growth Through Adversity Author Tappei Nagatsuki originally intended for Return by Death to make Subaru stronger—but instead leans into Subaru’s mental and emotional evolution through repeated trauma. • Emphasizing High Stakes While the ability offers resilience, it’s not synonymous with success. Subaru must strategize within tight constraints, making each reset fraught with tension and danger. • Loneliness & Responsibility Return by Death isolates Subaru emotionally—he can’t explain his foresight even when it could save lives. This forces painful betrayals and trust issues that intensify the narrative conflict.
⸻
Who Knows or Influences the Ability? • Satella, the Witch of Envy, is the source of the ability. • Roswaal and Puck are among the few who suspect or know about it—though Subaru himself never tells them directly.
Rem & Ram – Appearance, Personality, and Lore
Rem
Appearance: • Rem has medium-length sky-blue hair that covers her right eye, paired with light blue eyes. She’s typically seen in a classic maid uniform—black and white with floral accents and thigh-high stockings. • She possesses a petite 154 cm (around 5’½”) frame, with a slightly more developed bust compared to her sister. • As an Oni, she sometimes manifests a horn on her forehead when entering battle mode.
Personality: • Initially reserved and formal, Rem can be blunt but caring. She’s deeply devoted and has a strong loyalty toward Subaru after he earns her trust. • Her early interactions with Subaru are fraught—she initially mistakes him for a cultist and even attacks him—but his persistence and kindness transform her feelings.
Background Lore: • Born into an Oni village along with her twin Ram, Rem was despised because oni are meant to have two horns—but as twins with one horn each, they were viewed as abominations. Ram’s display of power spared them from execution. • A Witch Cult massacre left their village destroyed, parents dead, and only the two sisters surviving—Ram lost her horn in the attack. • Rem developed a deep inferiority complex and guilt for her sister’s injury, believing she must “live the life her sister should have,” fueling her devotion to serve and protect. • A turning point arrives when Subaru shows her compassion and helps her overcome guilt and recognize her individual worth.

She can be sharp-tongued and pragmatic, especially toward Subaru—but beneath that exterior, she’s deeply loyal and protective. • Her emotions are guarded; she rarely shows vulnerability, though softer moments emerge with Rem and Roswaal.
Background Lore: • Considered a prodigy in her Oni tribe, Ram was hailed as a reincarnation of the Oni god for her strength. • When the Witch Cult attacked, she lost her horn (sacrificing power to protect her sister), after which both she and Rem were rescued by Roswaal. • Since then, she serves Roswaal faithfully—partly out of gratitude, partly because he helps sustain her by compensating for her lost mana due to her missing horn. • She retains a sense of duty and resolves to remain strong, although she internally grapples with her physical limitations and guilt.

- #1Natsuki Subaru
Keys: Subaru
Natsuki Subaru (ナツキ・スバル) is the main protagonist of Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu. A former hikikomori, he was transported to Lugunica through unknown means, where he was given the Authority which he calls "Return by Death" by Satella and became the knight of the Kingdom and the personal knight of the Royal Selection Candidate Emilia.[6] Although he came from another world, Subaru has shown to be mysteriously connected to the history of the new world, having a strange yet deep connection to the Witch of Envy and the other Witches of Sin, knowledge of the stars that are deeply connected to important locations and personages across the world, the strange ability to gather Witch Factors within his body, and most curiously, bearing the candidacy to become a Sage. Following the events of one failed loop, Subaru is now determined to uncover the world's and the Kingdom's history, as he believes he can no longer remain ignorant of it.
Contents Appearance Born and raised in Japan, Natsuki Subaru is a young man in his late teens. He stands at a height of 172 cm with an athletic physique which he maintains both prior to and during his summoning to Lugunica. He inherited a shared mix of physical traits from both of his parents; his medium-length thick black hair bore a striking resemblance to his father as well as his face shape, while his black (brown in the anime) sanpaku eyes which have small irises that made the whites of his eyes stand out, were inherited from his mother although some people find them intimidating, with the exception of some individuals who like them, namely Emilia. Just like his father, Subaru has quite an athletic build, as back in Japan, he was raised as an athlete by his father. Despite his shut-in nature later on, he nevertheless continued to train himself to maintain his physique. In Arc 2, as he was learning to work as a butler, his hands became littered with small scars caused by cooking knives.
Subaru's main attire throughout the early parts of the series is his cheap, athletic-theme outfit he was summoned in. The ensemble consists of deep-grey tracksuit bottoms with an orange stripe down the side, black sneakers with vibrant orange laces and soles, and a black t-shirt. Additionally, Subaru has with it a zipped-up white tracksuit jacket with a stand-up collar, deep-grey sleeves with an orange line running down their sides and orange cuffs, and deep-grey shoulders. On the left breast of the jacket is a black brand symbol that is reminiscent of the letter N. During the first trial in Arc 4, he can be seen wearing his school's official uniform, which consists of a blue blazer and trousers and a red tie. Later in the same arc, during his knighting ceremony, he wore the knight's official uniform, and a purple cape with the crest of House Mathers on its back was draped over his shoulders.During his adventure in the Pleiades Watchtower in Arc 6, Subaru wore an outfit better suited for travelling. The outfit in question consisted of an orange scarf that matched the color featured on his track suit, black trousers tucked into lighter brown boots with black lacing, a black shirt that matched the shade of his trousers, a light brown buttoned blazer worn atop the shirt that ensured that only the shirt's collar was visible, a brown belt matching the shade of the boots, and an open green jacket. He also occasionally wore a long black hooded cloak alongside the outfit. However, he has returned to wearing his tracksuit as of Arc 10. Subaru is a playful person who, despite the impression that his eyes and face tend to give off, has a tendency to interact with the people around him with kindness, even if they are not fond of him, something which people like Otto Suwen, Rem, and even Petra Leyte noticed and found to be one of his best qualities. He also has a tendency to speak before he thinks, with one of his more tactless comments being about Frederica Baumann's teeth, and he is a habitual promise breaker, to the point that other have learned to not trust when he makes a promise. Despite speaking before he thinks things through, that trait has apparently helped other people,[7][8] whether to keep calm or to give them courage when they needed it most. This being said, because his self-esteem had been reduced from the time that he was a child and the fact that he was given Return by Death, Subaru has come to harbor a bad habit of trying to carry the burdens of the people around him on his shoulders alone, something which not only worries the people around him but also causes them to scold him regularly.[9]
He is also a fiercely loyal person who treasures his relationships, and though he might not get along well with the people around him at times, especially in cases such as Julius Juukulius, whose impression rubs him the wrong way; Vincent, whose ideals counter his in almost every way; and even Todd Fang, who was his enemy in nearly every interaction they've had and was even responsible for the deaths of the people around him at times; he does not want to see any of those people die, being willing to use his Return by Death to save them if they died around him.
- #2Emilia
Keys: Emilia · Secondary: Mealy
Emilia (エミリア) is the main heroine and deuteragonist of the Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu series. She is a half-elf and a candidate to become the 42nd monarch of the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica in the Royal Selection, who met Natsuki Subaru on the day he was summoned to the world. Emilia has played a supporting role in every arc, with major and pivotal roles in more than half of them. Born and raised by her aunt in Elior Forest, Emilia is a half-elf terribly beloved by the spirits. However, during the Permafrost of Elior Forest, her memories were locked away, and she was frozen for approximately 100 years. After being watched over by Puck, she eventually became a Royal Selection candidate in the hopes of unfreezing the residents of the forest. Through many trials and tribulations, including mass discrimination, she came into her role well, holding many feats under her belt, including helping to defeat the Sin Archbishop of Greed and the Great Rabbit, becoming the administrator of the Pleiades Watchtower, and forming an alliance with Vollachia. Emilia is a beautiful half-elf with long silver hair, purple-blue eyes, and pointed ears. She wears a white and purple outfit along with a white flower in her hair. Although she appears to be in her late teens, Emilia's chronological age remains unknown, though mentally she has been stated to be in her early to mid-teens. She has styled her hair in a variety of ways, as per her contract with Puck, the Beast of the End was the one who arranged her hairstyle.
Though she rarely uses it in the present, for a time, she wore a white cloak with cat ears on the hood that had cognitive obstruction enchanted on it. She can be seen wearing this several times in the early arcs, to protect herself from the sands of the Augria Sand Dunes in Arc 6, and in Arc 7 to temporarily disguise herself.
At the end of Arc 4 during Subaru's knight ceremony, Emilia wore a white dress and a white mantle. The mantle had purple fur lining its edges, and the inside of it was also purple. She also wore a hairpiece that had a flower ornament on each side of her head. In Arc 5, she wore a yukata in the Water Plumage Inn, and after being taken by Regulus, she was made to wear a special wedding dress, though once the fight against him got underway, she ripped the dress at the legs for more freedom of movement. In Arc 6, her outfit is very reminiscent of Fortuna's. During one side story, Emilia also donned a maid's uniform reminiscent of Rem and Ram's.
When Emilia still lived in Elior Forest as a child, she had a different set of clothes with the same color pattern. She had a light green ribbon instead of her necklace, a different flower in her hair, and could be seen wearing a light-purple headband. Emilia is a very kind, good-natured, and energetic girl who is also incredibly selfless and likes to take care of others, though she herself sometimes refuses to admit this, instead thinking of it as her own selfishness or something everyone would do in her position despite that often not being true. Emilia has a tendency to use a myriad of archaic words, such as "dunderhead". This quirk of hers is mostly pointed out by Subaru, who has a tendency to tease her about it, though Emilia doesn't pay it any mind. Fortuna has also questioned where she had picked up such a vocabulary. Furthermore, Emilia also has a strong tendency to drag out the word "really", which can be best observed when she's talking about something dear or important to her. This quirk was likely picked up from Fortuna, who had the same verbal tic. She is rarely angered by the people around her, only having been angered by the despicable actions of Pandora, Regulus, and Aldebaran's betrayal thus far. She is a poor liar as well, to the point that people would just be suspicious of her if she tried.[6] She also has a strong belief in promises, having been raised by Fortuna to believe that if someone makes a promise, they should always keep them something she took to heart not just with the spirits around her but also with the people she interacts with, and it is because of this that she sometimes became emotional with Subaru, a habitual promise breaker. She is someone who believes in a person's good nature, and she displays a kindness similar to Subaru's, typically wanting to befriend others even despite race, appearance, and even position putting herself and others at odds, and she does not want to fight with others if she can help it, preferring to talk with her enemies and understand them rather than fight if it is an option. That said, if she is forced to, she will enter a fight with the intention of killing if it is necessary, though her fighting style still focuses on capturing her enemies alive, something very reminiscent of her gentle nature.
- #3Puck
Keys: Puck
Puck (パック) is an artificial spirit created by Echidna that Emilia was formerly contracted with. He is counted among the Four Great Spirits as the Beast of the End.[4][5] He played a major supporting role in Arc 1, Arc 3, and Arc 4, and he played a supporting role in Arc 2. During the events of the first four arcs, Puck played a pivotal role for Emilia's mental state, supporting her and acting as her parental figure. During the events in the Sanctuary, however, Puck forcefully severed the contract with her in order to remove the seal placed over Emilia's memories, giving her a fighting chance in the Witch of Greed's Trials. After using every last bit of power that he was capable of mustering up at that time, Puck entered a long period of sleep inside a glintstone worn by Emilia. With said stone having been replaced by a stronger glintstone, everyone is waiting for his power to build up again so he can awaken. In his smaller form, Puck stands at nine centimeters tall and is small enough to fit in the palm of a person's hand. Aside from his diminutive stature and the fact that he usually stands on his hindlegs, Puck is fairly physically reminiscent of a common house cat, specifically an American Shorthair. The light grey and white fur that coats his entire body is well-groomed and very soft. His eyes are Bright Aqua blue, and his pink nose is another trait that separates him from a house cat. Puck's tail is abnormally long to the point that it is the length of his body, and his ears are floppy yet extremely soft to the touch. On his left ear, Puck wears a single golden hoop earring that makes his ear droop down. He can also occasionally be seen carrying around a miniaturized magenta handbag that fits his small size perfectly.
Personality Puck is generally a nice spirit. He is usually in a very good and happy mood and usually stood at Emilia's side to protect her, affectionately calling her "Lia" or "my daughter". He occasionally shows his goofy side as well, which can be clearly observed during the events of Arc 2, where Puck nonchalantly teases both Subaru and Emilia with seemingly no end. Furthermore, Puck gets along especially well with Beatrice. However, Puck's demeanor greatly changed in loops where Emilia died. When such tragedy struck, he was willing to destroy the world to save Emilia and to fulfill his vows with the Witch of Greed.[6]
Despite his seemingly never-ending happy-go-lucky attitude, Puck usually reacts and acts very cold and sometimes even hostile with everyone else besides Emilia, Beatrice, Roswaal, Rem, Ram, and Subaru. During the Royal Selection Ceremony at the start of Arc 3, Puck was mere seconds away from freezing the entire Royal Throne Room, killing everyone inside it; though, it was revealed soon after that the entire exchange was a plan devised by Roswaal in order to have Emilia make a memorable impression on the Council of Wise Men and the other four Royal Selection Candidates. Around 400 years ago,[7] Puck was a humanoid being,[8] but he was turned into an Artificial Spirit by Echidna to watch over Emilia. Roughly three years after his creation, he and Beatrice helped Toska in fending off the Silver Dragons led by Fargall. At some point during this time, he also became aware of other figures such as Hector, the Warlock of Melancholy, and Altair Mathers.
He left Echidna by the time she moved into the Sanctuary to look for Emilia. After having searched for her for hundreds of years, he managed to find her frozen within Elior Forest. Several decades before the present day, according to a story relayed by Julius Juukulius's grandfather, after him and his some of his comrades were left behind in a snow storm during a clash between the knights and Gusteko's Temple Knights along the borders of the countries, he dragged the bodies of his comrades and struggled to escape the blizzard they were caught in until he found himself in a frozen forest. Within the forest, he met a “phantom”, who said that if they caused any chaos near his beloved daughter, he would never forgive them.[9] Suddenly, the knights appeared in the middle of a plain, and they managed to regroup with the Royal Knights. Although Julius's grandfather reported what happened, he was not taken seriously, and the tale, known as “The Phantom Father in the Snow”, would come to be seen as a delusion that was induced by the extreme cold and the snow storm.[10]
Bonds of Ice Seven years before the start of the Royal Selection, Puck unfroze Emilia and began to act as her mentor and father figure. Sometime after unfreezing her, Puck and Emilia ended up in a conflict with one of the Four Great Spirits, the Arbitrator, Melakuera. After defeating the spirit, Puck succeeded him as a member of the Four Great Spirits, and he formed a contract with Emilia, causing both his and her memories to be sealed.
For the next seven years, he continued to live with and protect Emilia inside the forest. One day, however, Roswaal L. Mathers appeared in the house that they were using, and because of the suspicion Puck had for the mage, the two wound up in battle.
- #4Roswaal L. Mathers
Keys: Roswaal
Roswaal L. Mathers (ロズワール・L・メイザース) is the lord of Roswaal Manor and the Mathers Domain, the current head of House Mathers, the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica's Head Court Mage, and the margrave of the Kingdom's western territories. Since the age of 14, Roswaal has been possessed by the soul of his ancestor, Roswaal A. Mathers. He set up the events of Arc 1, played a supporting role in Arc 2, Arc 3, Arc 7, Arc 8, and Arc 9, and he was the main antagonist of Arc 4. Although supporting Emilia's quest for the throne, he was actually using her, Subaru, and Ram for his own goals, which involved killing the Divine Dragon and resurrecting his mentor. However, in Arc 4, he made a bet with Subaru and subsequently lost, forcing him to truly support Emilia, though he hasn't given up on his ambitions. Roswaal is a rather tall man standing at 186 centimeters, making him taller than Natsuki Subaru by at least half a head. His well-toned body is slender and appeared delicate despite its impressive musculature. His very handsome face is ghastly pale which gives him the impression of a classic pretty boy. However, his physical beauty is somewhat concealed by his peculiar makeup and getup. Like previous generations, Roswaal had the same heterochromatic eyes in the same arrangement. His straight indigo blue hair is long enough to cover his whole back and is usually tucked behind his ear on the left side of his head. His face is usually decorated with a light-lavender powder, purple lipstick, and purple eye shadow that is adorned on his right eyelid. His yellow left eye is also bedecked with eye shadow that is more elaborate than the right's eye shadow and covers the whole area around the eye rather than just the eyelid and accompanies his unusual outfit comparable to those similar to a clown or jester, consisting of a black hat, a top and bottom with different shades of purple, along with red and black boots and a cape. He also has a chain surrounding his right ankle.
Although rarely, Roswaal sometimes does make an appearance without his signature make-up. His skin complexion is noted to be very ghastly and pale, and his eyes give off a gentle and rather welcoming expression, a polar opposite of what they give off when he's wearing make-up. When the situation calls for it, Roswaal also dons a more formal outfit, consisting of a long black coat that covers his entire body. Roswaal comes across as an eccentric due to his flamboyant appearance and odd speaking style, the latter which he shares with his grandmother. He often comes off as a friendly enough person, if weird, to speak with, usually behaving light-heartedly with the people around him. Roswaal cares about Ram and Rem a great deal and holds them in high regard among his staff. However, he is unusual among the nobility for having such close relations with demi-humans, to the point that he will hire and educate demi-humans with nowhere to go in his own manor and in Miload Manor without asking for anything in return,[5] and he has come to be known as the Demi-Human Lover because of it.[6] This has led to unsavory rumors that have suggested he has a fetish for them. That said, Garfiel speculates this is actually because he's been gathering half-bloods to the Sanctuary. He has also shown to become uncomfortable when dealing with positive talk about himself, such as when he got caught in the middle of such talk between Ram and Serena Dracroy. He has also at one point been told that if changes in the environment were for the better, then it was something to be happy about, and that he should not curse the events that led there. As such, he has never regretted nor cursed his environment as one blessed by it and his meetings.[7][8]Despite his apparent eccentricities, as his position demands, he harbors a far more calculating, scheming reserved side with a sharp political mind and gaze that reads others quite well. He is shown to be able to manipulate others to his whims through wordplay and displays of power, and he is nigh unbendable on the political battlefield, willing to take drastic actions to get his way, such as manipulating the environment of the Royal Selection Ceremony to ensure Emilia's position as one of the candidates in spite of her appearance. He has a habit of not talking to another person without being in a superior position, intent on grasping the other party's intentions, seizing their weaknesses, and if necessary, take hostages to secure his advantage, making him a formidable negotiator as well, while simultaneously displaying his cautious, even cowardly, nature. He has personally claimed to be famous for being unable to understand the emotions of others even if he speaks with face to face.[9] He has also said that he believed that when a person relies on something, that they should die by what it is they rely on, whether that is the sword, magic, fire, etc.; it is because of this that he told Ram that he would allow himself to die by her hand should the future ever deviate from his Book of Wisdom's predictions as penance for allowing her village to meet its destruction for his own ends.
- #5Ram
Keys: Ram
Ram (ラム) is Rem's older twin sister and one of the maids working for Margrave Roswaal L. Mathers. She has played supporting roles in every arc except for Arc 1 and Arc 5. Originally, Ram was born into the Oni Tribe with a single horn and displayed exceptional talent and strength which resulted in the village referring to her as the reincarnation of the Oni God. However, after an attack orchestrated by the Witch Cult, she lost her horn and, together with her sister, was saved by Roswaal L. Mathers. In return, Ram swore to help Roswaal in his own endeavors, pledging to help him kill the Divine Dragon, and as she started to fall in love with the Margrave, she harbored the intent to destroy him: his desires, wishes, and feelings, intending to take him away.[5] Appearance Ram has medium length light pink hair that covers her left eye, large darkish red eyes, and young features. She also has hair clips towards the right side of her hair, flower-shaped ribbon on the same side of her hair, and a black-white floral hairband, which is connected to the ribbon. She looks nearly identical to her sister Rem, apart from her hair, eyes, and ribbon coloring. She usually wears a maid uniform. She has a smaller chest compared to her sister, and she has slanted eyes. At times, she also wears a white hooded robe for when she is traveling on her own. She also has a uniform for colder days, which covers her shoulders, has longer sleeves, fluffier cuffs around the wrists, and a pair of pink earmuffs.
In Arc 6, Arc 7, and Arc 8 Ram wears a long-sleeved aqua-green dress with white frills at the hem of the long skirt, aqua-green boots, brown corset with three belts (two in the anime), black leggings, and an aqua-green cloak with a white design on the hood to protect her from the sands of the Augria Sand Dunes, while still wearing the hair clips, the ribbon and the hairband. From Arc 9 onward, however, she returned to wearing her maid uniform.
When she was young, she wore a white kimono and a pair of zoris, a native dress to the onis, and her hair was the same as in the present day.[6][7] After joining Roswaal Manor's staff, she started to don a maid uniform that matched her size. At one point, during a Tammuz Festival, she wore a pink dress for her maid uniform, complete with a bejeweled tiara that Roswaal had bought for her.[ Ram is seemingly self-centered, sardonic, and does things at her own pace. However, in actuality, she maintains a distance from people to ascertain them. She is slightly more outgoing in comparison to the generally taciturn Rem, who generally allows Ram to take the lead in their sisterly bond. Her sardonic remarks are her way of teasing others. While she's cold and snarky outwardly, she is caring of others around her deep down, and she is surprisingly kind and forgiving towards others. At the same time, however, she dislikes being told to stand back by others during battles and instead prefers to fight for herself.[9] Even at a young age, she showed a level of wisdom that was beyond the adults,[10] which had nothing to do with age or readiness,[11] was fully aware of her outstanding position, did not care about the restoration of her tribe,[12][13] felt that it would be troublesome if she was put in a position of importance,[14] and didn't open up to anyone other than Rem.[15] Despite this, she did feel vengeful toward the ones who destroyed her village, and she swore retribution on them,[16] which she and Rem ultimately achieved.
While Ram tends to come off as rather lazy in her work as a maid, often seen taking breaks and doing a shoddy job with whichever task she is given, in truth, her body, which is constantly experiencing pain from the severance of her horn, prevents her from doing too many physical tasks.[17] Because of this, she does whatever work she physically can, which includes completing documents related to the affairs of the Mathers Domain whenever Roswaal in unable to, though she keeps this a secret from her sister. Also, when she was young, she often experienced impulses driving her to fight and kill, and those impulses only got stronger as she aged and got more powerful. She resisted them for a long time until the day that her horn was severed from her, which effectively ended those impulses. Despite the pain that comes with the loss of her horn and the restraint of most of her strength behind "shackles", however, she actually believed that it was a good thing, which she affirmed during her battle with Lye Batenkaitos, when she realized her impulse to kill would be far too hard to resist if they had remained. Ram has once been claimed to be one of the strongest characters in the series if she was capable of using the full power of her horn. She was formerly considered to be a child prodigy and the second coming of the Oni God,[19] even though she only had one horn
- #6Rem
Keys: Rem
Rem (レム) is a maid in service of Margrave Roswaal L. Mathers alongside her sister, Ram. She is one of the main supporting characters of Re:Zero, with major roles in Arc 2, Arc 3, and Arc 7, and a supporting role in Arc 8, Arc 9, and Arc 10. During the first half of Arc 2, she was the secondary antagonist. Born the younger twin of Ram, Rem, having an inferiority complex, was attached to and only relied on her sister, caring for no other. Following her sister after the destruction of her home with the Oni Tribe, she became a maid of the Roswaal Manor, working hard to bear the burden that her sister no longer can with the intent of becoming her horn in her place.[5] However, she began to open up after Natsuki Subaru's arrival to the mansion, falling for him. At the end of Arc 3, she had her name and memories eaten by Lye Batenkaitos and subsequently fell into suspended animation. She later awoke at the end of Arc 6 bearing amnesia. Rem has medium-length sky blue hair that covers her right eye, large light blue eyes, and young features. She also has hair clips towards the left side of her hair, a flower-shaped ribbon on the same side of her hair, and a black-white floral hairband, which is connected to the ribbon. She looks nearly identical to her sister apart from her hair, eyes, and ribbon coloring. She usually wears a maid uniform, and since her chest is slightly larger than her sister's, she secretly changes the measurements to hide it. She has a uniform made for cold times, which has warmer cuffs around the wrists and covers her shoulders, and she also has one that she wears for her days off, that has more black than white, covers her shoulders, has shorter sleeves, and is closer to being a regular dress.
In Arc 6, Rem was dressed in a long-sleeved pink dress with white frills at the hem of the long skirt, pink boots, brown corset with three belts (two in the anime), black leggings, and a pink cloak to protect her from the sands of the Augria Sand Dunes, while still wearing the hair clips, the ribbon and the hairband. She continues to wear this uniform until her return to Lugunica.
When she was young, she wore a white kimono and a pair of zoris, a native dress of the onis, and her hair was styled the same as in the present day.[6] After joining Roswaal Manor's staff, she began to don her maid uniform.Rem is a competent, loyal person who always tries her best. Initially, in public, Rem is someone who maintains an emotionless expression, not displaying feelings like sadness or anger to maintain formality. She speaks politely to others, even if she dislikes them internally. Additionally, she possesses a sharp tongue and can unknowingly say blunt or critical things to the people she interacts with. While calm on the surface, in intense situations, Rem often gets tunnel vision and locks onto a singular objective. She tends to try to do everything on her own, bearing the burden of everything on her shoulders. Initially, from her perspective, only Ram and things directly related to Ram were important. This leads Rem to make rash decisions to protect her community, without needing to think twice about the situation. Working at Roswaal Manor, she also holds respect for its master, having been thankful for his actions towards demi-humans.[7] More than anything, due to the way she grew up, Rem harbored excessive feelings of attachment, gratitude, and respect towards her older twin sister, Ram. Because she was always alone, her sister's care became a source of comfort, yet at the same time, something that caused her to feel as if she was suffocating.[8] She is fully aware of how extraordinary her sister is, which she looks up to her for, but at the same time, not being able to understand the things that she can have made her feel worthless.[9] Throughout her life, she constantly put herself down while propping her sister up, which, combined with the fact that she was born with one horn and was significantly weaker than her brethren, has led to an inferiority complex, and this complex deepened as a result of her guilt from feeling the slightest hint of joy after her sister's horn was severed, leading her to aim for becoming a perfect servant to atone for what she felt she had robbed from Ram.[10] This also leads her to understand others who have a similar complex, like Frederica Baumann has about her teeth.[11] Burdened by a sense of atonement toward Ram, she overworks herself, doing things in a way she believes her sister would.
Despite what happened to her village, though she was saddened by their deaths, she harbored little sorrow for the deaths of her kinsmen, having been grateful that she still had her sister,[12] and the only reason she initially agreed to take revenge with Ram was for Ram's sake rather than her own. During her time at Roswaal Manor, though her sense of inferiority and guilt never diminished, she felt more fulfilled than she ever did in her village, which weighed heavily on her conscience, as she was aware the only reason this was the case was because her kinsmen were killed.[13][14] Simultaneously, her anger and attachment toward getting the revenge that her sister desired also diminished, as she was becoming happier while living at the manor.[15] That being said, her sense of hatred will resurge when put into said environment. Because of this incident, she has a deep sense of hatred for the Witch Cult and believes that nothing good can come from the Witch’s scent, and upon smelling it in her youth, she became quick to act, vengeful, and highly aggressive, to the point that she was willing to torture a man to death to draw out information about his co-conspirators.
- #7Beatrice
Keys: Beatrice
Beatrice (ベアトリス) is a member of the Emilia Camp and the former caretaker of the Forbidden Library at the old Roswaal Manor, until its destruction in the climax of Arc 4. She is one of the main supporting characters in Re:Zero, having had a supporting role to play in every arc except Arc 1 and Arc 3. She is an artificial spirit created by the Witch of Greed for unknown reasons. 400 years ago, she was told to wait in the library for "That Person" who would grant her salvation. However, in Arc 4's climax, Subaru convinced her to live, and she became his contracted spirit. On the outside, Beatrice seems like a lovely young girl around the age of eleven or twelve. Her face is so sweet that Subaru believed there was no heart that wouldn't melt at the sight of a genuine smile of hers. Her large sky-blue eyes have pink butterfly patterns as their irises.[6] Beatrice's pale cream blonde hair is worn long and tied into frilly vertical drill-shaped twin tails that act like springs when pulled on. In the anime adaptation, the tips of her twin tails are dyed pink.
Most of the time, the Great Spirit of the Forbidden Library can be seen wearing a pink frilly ornate dress with white trimmings and an exposed front that leave her legs visible and are completely covered by pink and purple vertically striped tights. A petite crown is also sported on the right side of Beatrice's large head, serving as a nice accessory which complements her appearance rather perfectly. Beatrice also wears pink shoes with butterfly straps on her feet, and has a large pink ribbon adorned upon the left side of her waist and a pair of similar ribbons tied at the top of her twin tails.
In the Water Plumage Inn in Arc 5, she wears a yukata. Beatrice has a tendency to look down on those around her, to the point that she would come off as a haughty person to people she meets. As such, this makes her rather bad at dealing with people who try to get close to her, like when she first met both Ryuzu Meyer and Subaru. She usually speaks, in the third person, referring to herself as Betty. She is also prideful of her vast knowledge of yin magic, disliking when someone disrespects it, and she also displays pride at being Echidna's daughter, though this would at times lead her into spats with others Echidna had taken a liking to. She has also shown a mischievous side of herself; when she messed around with Ryuzu, she cast a yin magic looping spell to pull a prank on her, and she did the same to Subaru when she found herself somewhat annoyed by the commotion his presence initially caused for her. That said, when a prank is done back to her or someone sees through it, she becomes annoyed quite quickly. She has also shown tsundere tendencies, acting haughty around people she was close to yet disliking showing her sensitive or weaker side of herself, which has come to light with both Roswaal and Ryuzu. That said, she is softhearted beyond her perceived stubbornness. She also has a distinct way of speaking, adding "I suppose" (かしら, kashira) and "in fact" (のよ, no yo) at the end of most of her sentences.
Despite being full of bravado, following the attack on the Sanctuary by Hector, when Ryuzu, who was her closest friend and even promised to teach to read, gave her life to defend everyone, she has become a rather lonely person, and though she was willing to wait in the Forbidden Library for centuries after her mother entrusted it to her until the arrival of "That Person", she refused to come out and even shut herself off from each successive generation of House Mathers, and even Toska, who had once tried and failed to bring her out of the library. With numerous people having stumbled upon the Forbidden Library, not there specifically for her but her knowledge and the knowledge the library contained, her belief for the arrival of "That Person" started to wane, to the point that she contemplated if she should continue to exist. She still showed great affection towards Puck, who she found cute and trusted implicitly, but in the time that the two were separated, when she realized that he had changed after meeting Emilia, this made her sense of loneliness stronger.
However, after meeting Subaru for the first time, though she maintained her stubborn and distant attitude, she started showing a slightly more social side of herself, sometimes putting up with the shenanigans caused by Subaru and Emilia, feeling the need to help Rem when she started visiting the library regularly, eating with other members of the Roswaal Manor, and at one point, even attempted to better her singing by placing a bucket over her head to hear her voice better, something that she had seen Emilia doing at one point Although she likely is able to use most if not all attributes, Beatrice is particularly adept as a master of yin magic and is capable of casting all kinds of yin magic spells, even those that have been long since forgotten by people in the present. She is capable of doing various things through it such as teleportation, freezing time, tearing space, and fixating her existence. Her control of magic is so masterful that other practitioners can immediately recognize it.
- #8Otto Suwen
Keys: Otto
Otto Suwen (オットー・スーウェン) is a former merchant and the current internal affairs officer of the Emilia Camp. He has played a supporting role throughout the story, except for Arc 1, Arc 2, and Arc 6. Born as the second son of the heads of the Suwen Company, Otto became a traveling merchant, after having been essentially banished from his hometown Picoutatte, in hopes of eventually starting his own store. After his path crossed with that of Natsuki Subaru and Emilia, however, Otto joined the Emilia Camp, hoping to shield them from the dark dangers of the world, with his wariness pointed in particular at the backer of the camp, Roswaal L. Mathers.
Contents Appearance Otto has grey hair that frames his face and falls just below his chin. He has sharp, bright blue eyes and a fair skin tone. He is considered to be somewhat handsome if he has a serious expression. However, he is usually either retorting, shouting, or panicking, ruining his looks. He has a medium build but has trained himself since he used to work as a merchant. Particularly being clad in green, he wears a green, belted wardrobe, as well as a dark green hood, held up by a red bow. He also wears a green Ushanka, decorated with a white feather. His hat is rimmed with gold and so is his outfit to an extent. As he comes from Picoutatte, he gives off a slight Arabian flair.
Personality Otto is quite an unlucky person, first shown when he almost drowned in his first bath; he was accordingly born under an unlucky star. When he was young, he was treated as a pitiful child by others due to his Divine Protection, as they thought he was talking to imaginary objects. He is generally on the receiving end of jokes, with some people, such as Natsuki Subaru, suggesting that they use him as a shield, but despite this, he is loved by the others. He's easily embarrassed, sensitive, and considered weak or pathetic, which can lead to others underestimating him. Though Otto can be timid and prone to panic, he is intensely loyal to his friends and can be very courageous when it comes to protecting them. He helped Subaru in the Sanctuary even though it could've cost him his life, that not being the first time he's risked himself for his friends. He will even become angry on his friends’ behalf, especially when certain enemies mock the memory of those who were close to his friends, and like Subaru, he goes out of his way to help others while not showing any similar concern for himself.[5]
Otto often curses his own carelessness,[6] and he often tends to worry about the people he is close to, to the point that he becomes frustrated with them. This is most dominantly seen when dealing with Subaru’s actions, as he showed visible distress and anger when seeing his interactions with Roswaal or when he decided to protect Spica. He is also willing to play the villain when needed, acting as the wall before the naive Subaru and Emilia so that they don’t act recklessly or become needlessly involved in danger. On top of that, he is also a constantly wary person when dealing with people he can’t trust, as he went to restore the Book of Wisdom Roswaal owned in order to determine the plans he’d set up prior to the events of the Sanctuary. Although he is capable of defending himself against the likes of someone like Garfiel before his great jump in strength, Otto's actual combat strength is not very high. Despite this, the entire Emilia Camp agree he is perhaps the most dangerous member of the group because of his intellect. With his intellect combined with his incredibly versatile Divine Protection, Otto is a major supporter in wide scale conflicts, and his presence, ability to collect information, analytical abilities, and cautious nature have the potential for Otto to become key to achieving victory in wide scale conflicts.
Divine Protection Otto using his Divine Protection to hear the voices of nearby animals. - #9Frederica Baumann
Keys: Frederica
Frederica Baumann (フレデリカ・バウマン) is a maid in service to Roswaal L. Mathers and a member of the Emilia Camp. Frederica has played a supporting role in Arc 4 and a lesser supporting role in Arc 7 and Arc 8. Having grown up in the Sanctuary as a rough and tumble tomboy with her brother Garfiel, in her youth, she left to become a maid so that she could find a place for the people of the Sanctuary. Though having been let go for a period of time, following the events of Arc 3, she resumed her position as a maid for House Mathers at Ram's request. Frederica has very long pale gold hair and green eyes. She is a little taller than Subaru, has a muscular build, and a mouth with sharp fangs. She is mentioned to look like a carnivorous hunter locking onto its prey when she narrows her eyes. According to Subaru, Frederica would be a beautiful woman if she covered her mouth. She is also commonly seen wearing maid’s attire, as her job requires. When she was young, Frederica’s unkempt hair reached her shoulders, and she wore a pink dress with a red scarf and red socks.
During her outing to Costuul, Frederica wore a white and green dress, and she wore a green mantle over her shoulders with yellow designs along its edges.
When she transforms, she becomes a golden leopard that even the People of Shudrak found beautiful. When she transforms back from her leopard form, her clothes have either been forsaken or torn off, leaving her completely naked.
Advertisement Personality Unlike her younger brother Garfiel, Frederica uses her father's surname Baumann. She is a kind person, although she can be strict at times, especially to Petra who started working as a maid. She also cares deeply about Garfiel and used to send him letters regularly when he was still in the Sanctuary, and after learning from Roswaal that he enjoyed reading, she also sent him books.[5] As children, she used to spar with him and often sent him flying, completely ignoring the seven-year difference between them. She has a complex about her teeth, which causes her to hide them from others.[6] She also seemed to want to be called "big sister" by her junior coworkers, and she was disappointed when Rem and Ram refused to do so. In the past, she was not as polite or graceful as she is in the present day. She had a temper, which she most often showed around Clind, Rem, or Ram, and though she started to become strict due to her position, Roswaal had complained that she was often too stiff.[7] Frederica was born around 21 years prior to the start of the story to a father who was a half-beastman and a human mother, Reshia Tinzel, and was born a quarter beast human. Eventually, after wandering around, Frederica, along with Reala and Garfiel, were picked up by Roswaal and given a home at the Sanctuary. Reala left her children at the Sanctuary to bring back her missing husband. Frederica lived at the Sanctuary until she was 11 years old when she became a maid, working for Roswaal she could give her people and brother in the Sanctuary a home for when the barrier would eventually come down. During her time, she was taught by Clind how to be a servant, and she seemed to be fairly fond of him. However, as she aged, Clind started acting cold toward her, and she came to despise the man. Overall Power While Frederica is a strong combatant and has been capable of combat from a relatively young age, the full extent of her power is currently unexplored. This being said, she struggles to contend with people on the level of Elsa Granhiert.
Physical Traits/Flow Method Frederica is an adept melee combatant. However, her physical strength pales in comparison with other warriors. The full extent of her physical abilities is unknown.
Improved Senses: Due to having feline-type beast person blood, Frederica's senses are naturally greater than a typical human's.
Heightened Olfaction: Frederica has a heightened sense of smell. With just a sniff, she can determine if plants or fruits in a forest are poisonous. Night Vision: If she focuses, Frederica is able to easily see in the dark.[9] Frederica's full beast transformation. Frederica's full beast transformation.
Beastification (獣化, Kemonoka): Thanks to her quarter demi-human lineage from her father's side, Frederica can either fully or partially transform into a large leopard with golden fur and larger and sharper teeth.[10] While she is in this form, she can run at incredible speeds, easily able to traverse through long distances in quick time or overtop the rooftops of the Royal Capital without being spotted,[11] and her eyesight is also given a boost.[12] While in this state, she is easily capable of crushing her enemies' heads with her paws.[13] She is also able to partially beastify, typically doing so with her arms in combat, which can allow her to stop the strikes of even the Bowel Hunter momentarily.
- #10Ryuzu Meyer
Keys: Ryuzu
Ryuzu Meyer (リューズ・メイエル) is the name of the original Ryuzu Meyer, whom her copies are based on. They played supporting roles throughout Arc 4. Originally created by Echidna during her immortality experiments, the Ryuzu clones were tasked with protecting the Sanctuary and its residents for 400 years. Following the events of Arc 4, the Ryuzu clones now live in a village near the new Roswaal Manor and are part of the Emilia Camp, and they can also be seen wandering around on the new Roswaal Manor's grounds. Like the original Ryuzu Meyer, all of the copies look the same. Ryuzu is a petite girl with long, fluffy pink hair that curves outward at the ends. She wears a large black robe (white for Shima) that drags along the ground and is too big for her hands to show completely through the sleeves. The bodies of the copies are revealed to have been created with an artificial "Od" that is surrounded and bound together with mana, forcing them to change places in order to recharge once they reach their daily limit.
Following the Sanctuary Incident, Garfiel and Subaru have begun styling each Ryuzu's hair differently in order to tell each of them apart, with the exceptions of the main three Ryuzus.
Personality Out of all of the clones, only four have an actual personality, as a necessity to perform their duties as main managers of Sanctuary. Although they share the first name with the original they are given different last names as part of their roles, personality quirks, hobbies and interests. The rest of the copies are devoid of any ego and act as simple workers who obey the 4 main Ryuzu or take care of other duties. Those that are recognized to be an Apostle of Greed by Echidna are allowed to gain command over the clones if they touch the crystal the original Ryuzu resides in. Each of the four main Ryuzu take on the role as Ryuzu every four days.
Ryuzu Meyer (original): By her own will, she sacrificed her life to enact the Sanctuary's Barrier by using her own Od which sealed her body in a crystal in order to stop the Warlock of Melancholy from destroying the Sanctuary. She also agreed to be a part of Echidna's experiment as long as the witch promised to maintain the Sanctuary.
Ryuzu Alma (リューズ・アルマ, Ryuuzu Aruma): Alma was in favor of freeing the Sanctuary. She was the one who clarified Subaru over various aspects of the conflict within the Sanctuary. Ryuzu Bilma (リューズ・ビルマ, Ryuuzu Biruma): Like Alma, Bilma was also in favor of freeing the Sanctuary. She is the 2nd clone Subaru meets and speaks the most with. Bilma also has the most playful disposition among the main overseers. Ryuzu Shima (リューズ・シーマ, Ryuuzu Shīma): Shima was against freeing the Sanctuary due to seeing the original Ryuzu's memories 10 years prior to the start of the story in the trial, and she had been partly manipulating Garfiel behind the scenes to make sure it didn't happen. She entered the grave in an attempt to rescue Garfiel but was forced into taking the trial. In the end, this meant that she had broken her contract with Echidna. As punishment, Shima was duly stripped from her position as overseer, and she was made to live with the other childlike clones in the forest, donning the white robe as a result. After the Sanctuary's fall, it is revealed after that incident from a decade prior, Echidna had been planning to use her to escape once the barrier had been lifted, and to that end, she had been slowly latching more and more of her soul onto Shima, until eventually, she successfully hijacked her body. Echidna, now in Shima's body, calls herself Omega. Ryuzu Delma (リューズ・デルマ, Ryuuzu Deruma): One of the copies with an actual personality. She was also in favor of lifting the barrier. She acted as Shima's support when the latter was telling the story of the Sanctuary's past. Pico (ピコ, Piko): Pico is a copy that Subaru named when he first discovered the original Ryuzu's body. She is able to follow simple orders, but other than that, she is like a baby. She was the clone most oddly attached to Subaru throughout the arc.
- #11Garfiel Tinzel
Keys: Garfiel
Garfiel Tinzel (ガーフィール・ティンゼル) is Frederica Baumann's younger half-brother, the former guardian of the Sanctuary, and the current military officer of the Emilia Camp. Introduced as a secondary antagonist during the first half of Arc 4, he later became one of the main supporting characters of Re:Zero, with major roles in the second half of Arc 4, Arc 5, Arc 7, Arc 8, Arc 9, and Arc 10. He harbored an immense fear of the outside world following a family tragedy. However, with Subaru's help, he overcame his past trauma, and after overcoming the incidents at the Sanctuary and Roswaal Manor, he joined the Emilia Camp. Since being exposed to the outside world, he has faced many situations where he was powerless, yet he still remains determined to protect those close to him. Garfiel is a young and relatively short boy with short gold hair and deep and sharp emerald-colored eyes. He originally kept his hair spiky and long but began to have a significantly neater haircut after the events of Arc 4. Due to his demi-human blood, he has sharp feline like fangs, similar to Frederica's. In fact, both Frederica and Garfiel share a similar face with perhaps the main difference being the large white scar stretching across the entirety of Garfiel's forehead, which he inflicted upon himself when, after experiencing the First Trial and seeing his mother's "death", he fell into a state of panic and repeatedly bashed his head against the walls of the Tomb, leaving him with a permanent X-shaped white scar.
Due to his vigorous training and his demi-human blood, Garfiel is extremely strong and possesses a rather well built and muscular physique. He can usually be seen wearing long black pants and a torn-up loincloth that is heliotrope-purple on the outside and red-violet on the inside and a short black vest with fuchsia accents. To match his color palette, Garfiel can also be seen wearing black long-sleeved gloves with fuchsia in them. A blue glintstone can also be seen dangling around his neck.
Personality Garfiel is an extremely protective and diligent young man with some chuunibyou tendencies, such as often being impressed with Subaru's naming sense. He's even shown to be rather protective of women and children, as pointed out by Meili Portroute, and he has a sense for a person's romance, which is part of the reason that, despite not seeing eye to eye with Subaru at the time, he did not interrupt his conversation with Emilia in Arc 4. With the exceptions of people like Roswaal L. Mathers and Olbart Dunkelkenn, Garfiel is not good at hating people.[5] For the people he does hate, however, he does not let such hatred cloud his judgement, and he will work with those people if necessary. He cares for his allies, friends, and family, and he will become extremely hostile when those people are threatened. It is precisely because of this that, in his youth, he trained using the regimen detailed in a book detailing Reid Astrea's exercises, and he even went out of his way to learn healing magic in order to heal everyone around him. Because of his strong sense of duty, responsibility, and the need to protect those around him, Garfiel has set his sights and being among the strongest people around, as he does not want to lose anyone. However, he has a tendency to beat himself up over failing to live up to expectations he was given, and in these times, he feels powerless and becomes somewhat self-deprecating, which in turn results in him becoming depressed. Despite this, he usually finds a way to overcome those internal conflicts, usually becoming all the stronger and fiercer for it.
Garfiel has shown to have a crush on Ram, and that is part of his motivation for becoming stronger, often doing what he can to look good in front of her, usually to no avail. Regardless, because of this and the circumstances of his environment when he was younger, he read many stories, leading him to garnering a habit of speaking in idioms from these stories. Garfiel was born around fourteen years prior to the start of the story to a father who was a half-beast human and a human mother, therefore, being brought to this world as a Quarter-Beast Human. Eventually, after wandering about, he and Frederica, along with their mother Reala (Reshia), were picked up by Roswaal and given a home in the Sanctuary. Reshia had left her children in Sanctuary to bring back her missing husband. Garfiel and Frederica lived together until she left when he was around 4 years old and he hadn't seen her since. Growing up with the Ryuzu clones who took care of him like their grandchild, he came to love the people of the Sanctuary. However, after seeing his mother's "death" during the first trial when he was young, he began to fear the outside world, causing him to try and protect the Sanctuary. At some point, his sister eventually left the Sanctuary as well to find a home for their people for when they brought down the barrier, leaving Garfiel to live with the Ryuzus.
- #12Petra Leyte
Keys: Petra
Petra Leyte (ペトラ・レイテ) is a former inhabitant of Arlam Village who currently lives and works at Roswaal Manor as a maid. She plays a major role in Arc 4 and Arc 9, a supporting role in Arc 7, Arc 8, and Arc 10, and a lesser supporting role in Arc 2 and Arc 3. Originally just a young village girl, she became a maid in order to stay close to Subaru, who had helped her shed her self-centered demeanor. Learning magic, politics, and maid duties, she helps the Emilia Camp in many aspects, whether that be assisting in making connections with other nobles and demi-humans or using her smarts to assist in battles. During her life as a village child, Petra wore common clothes that consisted of a pair of brown shoes, green leggings with horizontal stripes that were shorn just above the ankles, a white long-sleeved shirt, an open short-sleeved cream-colored cardigan with red outlining, and a red ribbon fastened to her collar. She has medium length reddish brown hair that, as time progressed, has grown to reach her shoulder in Arc 9, she has cyan eyes, and she has continued to grow taller since her introduction.
In Arc 4, Petra switched to a maid uniform for her job, keeping her ribbon tied in her hair. During Subaru's knighting ceremony, Petra wore a light green dress with a ribbon of the same shade in her hair along with her red ribbon. From Arc 7 and on, she wore a long-sleeved yellow and white shirt, a green skirt with white frills, a green cloak held together by a red ribbon, a red ribbon in her hair, white leggings, and brown boots. By Arc 9, she has also fashioned part of her hair into a braid.
Advertisement Personality Petra is a pure-hearted, innocent young girl who often tries her best to help and nurture others, regardless of whether doing so was detrimental to her. Her sweet personality is enough to mellow the hearts of those who interacted with her, particularly Subaru and Frederica, whose moods brightened just from talking with her. Unlike many people in Lugunica, Petra harbors no xenophobic tendencies towards demi-humans, instead judging people off of their deeds and personalities. Alongside the other children in Arlam Village, Petra held no prejudice against Emilia. In a similar vein, Petra is able to fairly judge a person's abilities and is unable to unfairly demean a person she doesn't like.[6]
For someone so young, Petra is incredibly brave, choosing to prioritize the lives and wellbeing of others above her own in situations of crisis. When the disguised Wolgarm fled into the Wolgarm-infested woods, Petra, who was unaware of the creature's true identity, steeled her nerves and traversed into the forest to rescue the animal from danger. When Elsa Granhiert took her hostage and brought her before Subaru and her fellow maids, Petra, although terrified at the prospect of dying, told her friends to flee and save themselves rather than rescue her. Similarly, she is even willing to put her life on the line if it means helping others, as shown when she placed an oath bound curse mark on herself as a promise to let Musica meet Emilia while negotiating to let them pass into Vollachia to save Subaru. She was even willing to read a Book of the Dead, despite knowing the risks involved, in order to understand her opponent's possible goals, as well as use a Witch Factor in spite of the risks.
Originally, Petra was a rather self-centered young girl, believing the world to be small and simple.[7] Being rather smart for her age and having known that she was cute,[8] she fully exploited that fact and used it as a means of getting out of trouble,[9][10] believing that apologies were essentially just a tool to obtain forgiveness.[11] Likewise, this gave her an excuse to be slightly mischievous.[12] Because she was adored by the adults, admired by the boys, and relied on by the girls, she had become excessively spoiled and her ego had bloated sharply,[13] and she had begun to harbor rather harsh opinions of other people.[14] This also led to her feeling a sense of loneliness when she realized nobody seemed to approve of her dreams of becoming a tailor,[15] and her not getting her way simply by her appearance became her first real setback. Overall Power Petra has once been declared one of the weakest characters in the series. However, she makes up for her lack of physical strength with her intelligence, cunning, will, and adaptability. Despite her youth, she has shown herself to be a formidable enemy whose tactical and political prowess, despite her youth, are not to be underestimated.
Although it is exclusive to Arc 9 and the Sasageru IF, Petra was once a formidable enemy as a Witch. Although in Arc 9 she pushed the limits of what she could do and sacrificed everything about her life to achieve victory, in the Sasageru IF, she held enough strength to contend with Vague Adgard and was feared as a centuries old Witch in a similar manner to the Witch of Envy.
- #13Meili Portroute
Keys: Meili
Meili Portroute (メィリィ・ポートルート) is a witchbeast tamer and a former "child" of Mother. First introduced in Arc 2 as a hidden antagonist, she is one of the main antagonists of Arc 4 alongside Elsa Granhiert. After the events of the arc, she was imprisoned but later joined the Emilia Camp and serves as one of the main supporting characters of Arc 6.
Age 14
Having been raised by witchbeasts after her seeming abandonment, she was taken in by Elsa, who practically raised her like a sister, and she became an assassin working for Mother. However, this occupation came to an end after her capture at Roswaal Manor, and following the Pleiades Watchtower Expedition, she has earned her pardon and works with the Emilia Camp in earnest. Meili Portroute has refined yellow-green eyes that give off an air of mysticism and an equalled well-formed nose. Her long dark-blue hair is kept out of her face and tied into a triple-braid that flows down to her hips. A pink flower ornament with white outlining, similar to Elsa's, is framed to the left side of her head. During her undercover stay in the village, Meili's braid traipsed over her left shoulder so that it rested over her chest and her hair wasn't decorated with an ornament. She looks the same age as Petra Leyte, suggesting she is around twelve to fourteen years old. When not concealing her true nature, she gave off the foreboding impression of someone who would grow up to be a true demon. When she was born, she was a feral child and did not know how to talk at all. She was raised by witchbeasts and was taught how to survive through them. When Elsa took Meili in, she started to admire her elder and began learning how to live like her "sister". Elsa taught Meili the basics of life, and the became the latter's purpose to live.
When she was first introduced, Meili acted like she was shy and meek, though in actuality she is extremely friendly and familiar toward others, even toward her targets. She also has a habit of stretching out the end of her sentences. During her stay at the Pleiades Watchtower, Meili becomes attached to Shaula, who she refers to as "naked onee-san", and typically spends her time hanging on to her shoulder.
- #14Crusch Karsten
Keys: Crusch
Crusch Karsten (クルシュ・カルステン) is the Matriarch of House Karsten and a candidate to become the 42nd monarch of Lugunica. She played a major role in Arc 3 and Arc 10 and a supporting role in Arc 5. She was also one of the main protagonists of The Dream the Lion King Saw. Daughter of the former Duke Karsten, she was raised in high society, where she grew to love the sword. Befriending both Fourier Lugunica and Ferris, she became incredibly popular among her people, eventually coming to be known for her skill on the battlefield as the Valkyrie and in office as the next Duchess. Following the demise of the Royal Family, which included Fourier, she was discovered to be a candidate in the Royal Selection. Following the belief that the country has become reliant on the Divine Dragon, she has made her goal to strengthen the country and sever the covenant with the dragon. Crusch is described as a beautiful woman with almond-shaped amber eyes and long dark verdant-green hair that reaches down to her lower back. Even though she is a woman, she generally tends to dress as a man (or at least very formally). Unsurprisingly, her impression changes if she wears a dress and smiles.
As a child, Crusch Karsten maintained a posture that reflected both refinement and beauty. Her pale white skin and sharp eyes helped exemplify her charming looks. Crusch's long hair was tied up in a ponytail with a light-pink bow. She wore an elegant grass-green dress of fine make that complimented her appearance perfectly and a necklace of pearls. Shortly after meeting Fourier, Crusch stopped tying her hair back and began wearing more refined masculine clothing.
The formal outfit she is usually seen in consists of a deep purplish-blue long-coat trimmed in white with golden epaulettes on the shoulders, a white blouse underneath, blue trousers, black, white-laced knee-high heel boots, white gloves, and a blue cap with a single horizontal white stripe along the middle. The cuffs on her coat are burgundy red with white frills; the inside of her coat and an armband on her left arm bearing the emblem of the Karsten House are very much the same shade of red. The decorative items she wears include seven golden cross pattée–two on each cuff, four on her mid-section connected in pairs by golden aiguillettes, and one in the middle of a red flower on upper left side of her chest, also connected to the shoulders by its own aiguillette. Her long hair is often tied at the end by a single white bow.
Normal outfit Normal outfit 1/3 When heading out to battle, she wears steel armor trimmed in gold, though it only covers part of her upper body, shoulders, and forearms. Along with the armor, her hair is tied into a ponytail, the gloves she wears are brown, and she bears a bright red cape. In one failed loop of Arc 3, she wears a black dress with a pink ribbon, black high heels, and a pink cover over her shoulders with black frills along its edge. Later, in the Water Plumage Inn in Arc 5, she wears a yukata.
As of Arc 5, her body was heavily infected by Capella Emerada Lugunica's cursed Dragon’s blood, leaving her skin, including on half of her face, covered in black vein-like markings. Since it seems to also have affected one of her eyes, she wears a medical eyepatch over it. After her curse was removed, however, the markings were removed and her body was emaciated, despite the daily care she had been receiving,[4] and her left eye, which she now covers with a large eyepatch, has become draconic, colored gold with a slitted pupil, while capillary-like lights stretched beneath it.[5][6]
Advertisement Personality While normally calm and serious, Crusch is honest, sincere, and righteous. Being the type of person who is destined to stand above others, she has talent and has worked hard to reach where she is now. She is already the head of her family, finishing her work better than her father. She prefers to act herself and has the pride of a warrior. Crusch is also gentle, often believing the false knowledge jokingly told to her by Ferris, and she sometimes displays an air-headed side. Like her mother Helena Karsten, she is shown to be ruthless and reckless.
From a young age, Crusch has always had an interest in weaponry, swordsmanship, and wearing men's clothing rather than women's clothing, something that left her father concerned on numerous occasions. However, before meeting Fourier and hearing his opinion, she still tried to do as her father asked and act more like a lady, wearing dresses and forgoing keeping her dagger on her person. However, after hearing his opinion, she stopped doing so, and she only rarely wore dresses again after.
Crusch is also dense toward any feelings of love above kindness, often not understanding why certain people behave a certain way, such as when she sometimes didn't understand Fourier's behavior. However, this only applies to feelings of love directed towards herself, as she has been shown to comment on the feelings of others. Because of the time she spent with Fourier, she has strong feelings concerning the Lion King, a term formerly given to the kings prior to forming the covenant with the Divine Dragon, and after his death, she felt that the Kingdom's reliance on the Dragon had gone too far, thus becoming her motivation for taking part in the Royal Selection. Likewise, because of how much influence Fourier had on her life, she could not accept the Dragon's influence as it had caused his death to be treated as if it hadn't happened, and thus, she made an oath to him after his death to do what it took to restore the nation and sever the covenant with the Dragon
- #15Felix Argyle
Keys: Felix · Secondary: Ferris
Felix Argyle (フェリックス・アーガイル), commonly known as Ferris (フェリス), is Crusch Karsten's knight, a member of her camp, and a member of the Royal Guard. He plays a major role in Arc 3, a supporting role in Arc 5 and Arc 10, and a minor yet important role in Arc 9. He is also one of the main protagonists of The Dream the Lion King Saw and The Travelogue of the Finest. Though born of the fallen House Argyle, Ferris is a longtime friend of Crusch, having been raised like family ever since she rescued him. Despite the troubles brought about by his demi-human traits, Ferris has shown himself to be the best healer throughout the Kingdom of Lugunica, earning himself the title of Blue and a place within the Royal Guard. Following the death of Fourier Lugunica, Ferris was anointed as Crusch's knight, and he strives to make Crusch the country's next monarch.
Contents Appearance Ferris has flax colored hair and yellow eyes, as well as cat ears and a tail. His casual wear consists of a blue collar with a ribbon, primarily white dress with a light blue chest with thin white stripes as well as a light blue hem, light blue ribbons with thin white stripes attached to the waist of the dress, a large white ribbon tied to the back of the dress, black tights, blue leggings with thin white stripes, dark blue shoes, white arm covers that are detached from the dress and leave his shoulders exposed, a dark blue scarf tied around his right arm, and a dark blue ribbon tied around his left ankle. He also wears white-and-blue ribbon hair accessories on either side of his head, which he wears regardless of his outfit.
At times, however, he can be seen wearing the standard uniform of the Royal Army, primarily whenever he is acting with the army itself or is involved with major operations such as the Subjugation of the White Whale and Sloth. In Arc 5, he wore a yukata. In Arc 10, he can be seen wearing a slender, navy blue tailcoat alongside more masculine clothing.[4]
Advertisement Personality Ferris usually refers to himself in third person, calling himself Ferri-chan. Though in the past, he has shown himself to be accepting of Crusch's father, Meckart, formally calling him Felix, and used it once in a formal capacity when receiving orders from Fourier, in most contexts, whether informal or professional, he has admitted he generally hates being referred to by his birth name, preferring to instead be called Ferris and also finding Ferri-chan okay.[5] Even during a ceremony of great magnitude for Lugunica's future, the Royal Selection Ceremony, he showed visible frustration after Marcos used his birth name. He also enjoys teasing other people, especially those that are surprised that he is male, using cutesy language and gestures in order to agitate them.
Ferris carries a very strong point of view over life and death, and although he hides it through his actions and words, as a healer, he holds those who no longer have any will to live in contempt from the bottom of his heart. Because of his own complex about being weak and helpless, he often hates and finds himself disgusted with weaklings, something that initially caused him to hate Subaru. He also often feels helpless when he is unable to prevent someone from dying or heal them, as seen when he showed endless frustration and disgust at seeing all of the victims of the Sin Archbishop of Lust. He attributes his father, Biehn, and the cruel abuse suffered at his hand, as being responsible for depriving him from the body he could have had, and accordingly, for being too physically weak to protect Crusch.[6][7]
In his youth, he greatly hated his parents for locking him up and abusing him, and by the point that he was freed, upon seeing his mother, he attempted to attack her as soon as he saw her for the many years of injustice he faced, though he was stopped by Crusch. Despite this, following being saved, cleaned up, and given a new home and family, Felix become extremely loyal to Crusch, to the point that he tried to train himself in the way of the sword, despite having no talent for it, and learned how to use healing magic to be of assistance to her, and he is constantly thankful for Crusch and for her giving him a way of life when he had lacked one. When Crusch one day unloaded her worries about the way she is seen for her behavior and more masculine preferences and the way she gets scolded by her father, Felix made a promise with Crusch that he would act as Crusch's feminine side while Crusch could be the man that he never could, a promise that was kept for years, and after his name was misheard as Ferris, he started using that name in place of his own. Overall Power Ferris has at one point been called one of the weakest characters in the series by the author. Due to his constitution and Divine Protection, although he would be among the hardest characters to kill, he has no combat capabilities. He lacks all talent with the blade, and though he has a strong aptitude with water magic and can effectively paralyze a person with his magic, he has no true offensive capabilities. However, he makes up for this by being the greatest healer in the world, his healing magic entirely unmatched by anyone.
Divine Protection Divine Protection of Water (水の加護, Mizu no Kago): Ferris's Divine Protection grants him a strong aptitude for healing magic.[16][17]
- #16Wilhelm van Astrea
Keys: Wilhelm van Astrea
Wilhelm van Astrea (ヴィルヘルム・ヴァン・アストレア), né Trias (トリアス), is a member of the Crusch Camp and was Theresia van Astrea's husband. He plays major supporting roles in Arc 3 and Arc 5, a supporting role in Arc 9 and Arc 10, and he is the main protagonist of the Sword Demon Trilogy. In his youth, Wilhelm fought in the Demi-Human War, where he earned the title of Sword Demon. Following the end of the Demi-Human War and Bordeaux Zergev’s resignation, he was given the honor of being the new Captain of the Zergev Squadron, and later, the Captain of the Royal Guard. After his wife was killed during the Great Conquest, he vowed to avenge her, and he left the Knights and the Astrea Family. Eventually, he joined Crusch in her camp for a chance to slay the White Whale, and sometime later, he achieved his goal during the Subjugation of the White Whale.

Appearance Wilhelm is an elegant older gentleman with a rather tall and muscular physique which one would not expect from a man his age. Due to his age, he has long bountiful white hair, which is perfectly combed back, suggesting his refinement. On his gentle old and wrinkled face, one can see a pair of beautiful sky-blue eyes that reflect wisdom, experience, and above all else, elderly warmth. Coupled with his white beard, Wilhelm represents the very essence of a well-mannered and good-looking elderly gentleman. In keeping with his occupation as Crusch Karsten's butler, he's always seen wearing a primarily black butler's outfit which consists of a white shirt over which he wears a vest of also white color. Over both the vest and the shirt, he's sporting a black, long-sleeved coat with some blue finishing touches around the edges. Matching the attire, his elegant pants are purely black. As a finishing touch, Wilhelm can be seen sporting white gloves and an elegant yet normal black bow tie. Thanks to his long-lasting profession, he has mastered the art of good manners. Most other butlers of his age could not hold a candle to his refined and perfect posture.
In the Water Plumage Inn in Arc 5, he wore a yukata.
In the past, Wilhelm was a very handsome and tall boy with relatively long brown hair which he wore tied back into a tail, similar to how he can be seen wearing it in the present. He had a pair of sky-blue eyes and a stern expression, giving off an air of inaccessibility and sternness. As a member of the Royal Army, he could be seen wearing a uniform that greatly resembled the current uniforms of the Royal Guards. In his free time however, he dressed a bit more casually with a long-sleeved, high-collared white shirt and grey vest which paired perfectly with his ashen brown trousers. Accordingly, with his title of the Sword Demon, he was always seen wearing a sheathed sword around his waist. Wilhelm is a refined man with a highly gentle and humble demeanor. He tends to maintain a calm expression, and he treats the people around him with respect. He will also teach others how to use the sword if requested, which he did for Natsuki Subaru and Crusch Karsten. Despite coming off as a gentleman most of the time, he does not seem to consider himself as such. During his bout with Yae Tenzen, he claimed that he was a swordsman and nothing else. Despite being one of the best swordsmen in the world who is willing to face most of his problems head on, he has shown no qualms in cutting someone down from behind. When Subaru asked him if he was fine with doing so in one failed loop because it might breach a code of honor, Wilhelm believed that while chivalry was something to respect, there were times when it was unnecessary. As the former Captain of the Royal Guard and Commander of the Zergev Squadron, he has a strong sense of duty alongside his protective nature. Should the people be in danger, Wilhelm will typically act quickly and fiercely, even should this include having to face off against the symbol of Lugunica, the Divine Dragon, if he needed to.
In his youth, Wilhelm was the very opposite of who he was in his later years: brash, afoot, short tempered, lonely, and often cold with others; of course, he also maintained a calm mind in spite of this, usually being able to analyze most situations he found himself in. He was a troubled individual, and instead of dealing with the people around him, he devoted himself to nothing but the sword, often going to train himself on his own in places that people would seldom appear. This being said, he started to change after he met Theresia. After meeting her, he started to become more sociable and protective. Though he kept a short temper and cold attitude at times, he was much easier to deal with compared to before. Still, after a brush with death when he went to fight during the Battle of the Trias Domain, where he discovered that Theresia was the Sword Saint, he quickly lost his temper, and when she decided to fight, despite her own gentle nature and despise of battle, he came to bear a hatred against the title of Sword Saint, and he became devoted to making sure that she would never have a reason to raise her sword.
- #17Priscilla Barielle
Keys: Priscilla
Priscilla Barielle (プリシラ・バーリエル) is an exiled imperial princess of the Sacred Vollachia Empire, the Matriarch of House Barielle, and a candidate to become the 42nd monarch of Lugunica. While only a supporting character in Arc 3 and Arc 5, she had a major role in Arc 7 and Arc 8. She was also one of the main protagonists of The Tale of the Scarlet Princess. Originally born in Vollachia as one of the many children of the country’s previous emperor, she attempted to secure victory in its Imperial Selection Ceremony. Despite having become one of the frontrunners, she ultimately lost when her brother and closest aide faked her death. Afterward, following the death of her first husband, she was smuggled into Lugunica, went through several husbands, and ended up married to the late Leip Barielle, who discovered her as one of the Royal Selection Candidates.
During the Great Disaster, Priscilla was imprisoned by Sphinx and forced to watch as her home nation was slowly led to ruin. Rather than standing idly by, she took advantage of the resurrection magic in order to escape her imprisonment by becoming an undead. A day following the victory, she peacefully faded away before the eyes of Natsuki Subaru and her knight, Aldebaran, making her the first to drop out of the Royal Selection.[4]
Contents Appearance Priscilla's long orange hair shone radiantly like the sun itself and flowed through a single barrette before spilling down her back. Her crimson eyes had a glimmer of strong will that betrayed her commanding personality. She had pale, white skin and faintly pink lips. She was considered a woman of true divine beauty. Additionally, her dainty figure possessed noticeably bountiful breasts and other shapely features. She stood at 164 centimeters (5'5"), the same height as Emilia.
Priscilla wore exquisite clothing that matched the crimson color of her eyes. The dress she most frequently wore was an opulent black and red aristocratic dress with wrapped off-the-shoulder sleeves, a wide-hemmed heel-length red skirt, a black petticoat, a large black ribbon with red striping attached to the right side of her waist, and a black flowery ornament with red edging and emerald jewels decorating each petal that was adorned on the opposite side of Priscilla's waist. The dress was also backless and prettified by various emeralds fastened to the skirt. Under her dress, she wears translucent reddish-brown holdup stockings with a black elasticized band at the top. She also had a black choker, a pair of red high-heel shoes, and a pair of long black fingerless opera gloves. She often carried a crimson handheld folding fan that she claimed from a half-sister she felled. Finally, her middle fingers ware bedecked with a single emerald ring each and similarly colored teardrop-shaped earrings dangled from her earlobes. The jewels enriching Priscilla's figure were all of such fine craftsmanship that anyone could tell they were incredibly expensive at a glance. Natsuki Subaru estimated that her full outfit from top to bottom was worth at least a hundred times his own money.
When she was inside her mansion, she wore a red outfit that highlighted her body a bit. She had a small coat with a black bow in the center and has a black clip on her hair, in which she had a ponytail. She also wore a pair of black studs. She kept her fan between her breasts. Priscilla was an arrogant, proud, and absurd woman, and she held the conviction that the world, which she extolled as beautiful, worked for her convenience.[5][6] She classified people according to their interests; if someone was not of her interest, she would not remember their names and would not pay attention to them anymore. This happened with Subaru a few days after meeting him,[7] though despite this, she later spoke of him as if she had still been paying attention to him. Her biggest enemy was boredom, so the things she did were to avoid it. She repeatedly hit Al or ordered him to do something to entertain her. She was also able to position herself in situations unimaginable to any gentleman, such as leading a dangerous expedition simply because she was curious.[8] In her speech during the Royal Selection Ceremony, she declared that under her command, everyone would be able to get what they wanted.[9] She was, according to Aldebaran, very volatile and very dangerous when she was angry, and she also had a habit of purposefully antagonizing others merely because she believes it would be entertaining, as she showed by bringing Heinkel Astrea with her to instigate the other members of House Astrea in Priestella at the time. Despite her self-centered attitude, Priscilla valued people who keep their pride, as seen when, in a failed loop, she kicked Subaru for choosing to abandon his pride to get what he wanted, or when she was amused when she spoke to Felt, where Felt refused to take an easy way out of a situation she was in.
- #18Aldebaran
Keys: Aldebaran · Secondary: Al
Aldebaran (アルデバラン), commonly known as Al (アル), is a former member of the Priscilla Camp who played the role of Priscilla Barielle's knight. Though only having supporting roles in Arc 3 and Arc 5, he is a major character in Arc 7 and Arc 8, and the primary antagonist of Arc 9. He also played a major supporting role in The Tale of the Scarlet Princess. Introduced as Priscilla's "knight", it is quickly revealed that there is more to him than at first glance, following the revelation that he was supposedly summoned to this world from Japan roughly 18 years prior to Subaru's own summoning. Throughout the series, he is gradually shown to have a level of precursory foreknowledge and familiarity with the Royal Selection participants, the Witch Cult, the Witches of Sin, and particularly Subaru himself.
Contents Appearance Al stands at 172 centimeters tall, making him the same height as Natsuki Subaru. When meeting Subaru for the first time, Al was estimated to be around forty years of age. His frame is stocky, and his body is covered in thick bulging muscles that give him an imposing impression. Prior to his appearance in the Vollachia Empire, Al lost his left arm from his forearm down. Instead of resorting to a prosthetic limb, Al has the stub where his forearm used to be covered in bandages. There are various other scars scattered across his body, including a pair of claw-like marks on his right forearm and a vast assortment of scars on his face that left him disfigured.[6] His overall shabby look, including his clothes and unshaven legs, make him look like a bandit or some other kind of lowlife. It could be said that his appearance is the polar opposite of his mistress, Priscilla Barielle.
Every piece of clothing Al wears gives a slightly different impression. His ensemble consists of a pair of green split-toe sandals with yellow buckles, sand-colored linen trousers, a bandage around his right wrist that matched the one that goes around his missing limb, bandages of the same assortment that are wrapped around his feet like socks, an open green linen vest with yellow lining and a hem of white fur, and a shabby yellow mantle that reaches down to his hips. Additionally, he wears a brown belt with a golden buckle that has a collection of green pouches attached to it with his liuyedao usually sheathed nearby. His most defining physical quality is the jet-black helmet he uses to conceal his scarred face. The helmet in question, in contrast to the rest of his clothing, is very refined and features a plume of neat red hair as a crest. Contrary to how he seemingly presents himself, Subaru believes that the way Al chooses to dress serves as a means of "protection".[7]
A partially unmasked Aldebaran. A partially unmasked Aldebaran. 1/3 Under his helmet, Al has long black hair wrapped in a ponytail, black eyes, and a stubble beard. He wears the same outfit as before even when regressed to his younger self during the events of Arc 7, but instead of his helmet, he uses torn-up wrappings to cover most of his face, similarly to how Vincent first appeared at the start of the arc. From the visible parts of his eyes, he appears to have sanpaku eyes, with small irises that make the whites of his eyes stand out. Additionally, he has long, black hair that appears to have purple strands and is tied up in a messy ponytail. Furthermore, at some point in time within the Castle of Dreams, Al was depicted from behind as having shorter hair reminiscent of Subaru's and wearing what appeared to be his jersey, though his front side, including his face and the front of his hair, remained out of sight. Al has a frivolous and goofy personality, and he was easily able to get along with others. He also brags that the only way he can fight is by outwitting people and catching them by surprise. Because of his light-hearted tone and friendly disposition, Al is a man who is easy to get along with even when taking his eccentric behavior into consideration, though at times, he can appear aloof. Al also somewhat cares about his appearance and has mentioned being insecure about the scars that cover his face. At one point, he even panicked when his face was threatened to be exposed and rushed to wrap bandages around his face when his helmet could no longer fit. He likewise shows attachment to his helmet, and he feels that he wouldn't be able to have face-to-face conversations without it. Also, in spite of his vast combat experience, Al does not like to make enemies, as he considers that taking care of them when a problem occurs requires a lot of work.
- #19Anastasia Hoshin
Keys: Anastasia
Anastasia Hoshin (アナスタシア・ホーシン) is the president of the Hoshin Company based in the Kararagi City-States and a candidate to become the 42nd monarch of Lugunica. She plays a major role in Arc 5, a supporting role in Arc 3, and a lesser supporting role in Arc 6 and Arc 8. Originally a commoner raised in the streets of Banan in Kararagi, she became a member of the Chuden Company, and eventually, rose into greater heights as an entrepreneur, creating and leading the Hoshin Company, and keeping the Iron Fang by her side as permanent allies. After a visit to Lugunica in a venture to expand her business, she was discovered by Julius Juukulius to be one of the Royal Selection Candidates. With her goal to expand her business and satisfy her self-proclaimed greed, she remains one of the frontrunners of the selection. Appearance Anastasia is a petite woman with blue green eyes and long, wavy purple hair that extends to her hips. She wears a long white dress with a fur hat (similar to the Russian Ushanka) and scarf along with a large purse shaped like a wallet. She also wears a yellow star-shaped hairpin on her hair and a small teal pendant around her neck. She is described to have cute looks and an aura similar to a small animal. Later, in the Water Plumage Inn, she wears a yukata.
During the events of Arc 8, she wore a white kimono with red internal lining, and at the ends of her sleeves and the hem of the kimono, there was a light pink design on it. She also wore sandals and carried a red parasol with tassels on the sides of it. She also had her hair tied in a side ponytail, held up by a flower hairpin, and she continued to wear her scarf.
When she first met Ricardo, Anastasia wore ragged clothes with her body covered in dirt. After Ricardo saved her from becoming a slave, he had cleaned her up and bought her a small pink and purple kimono with polka-dots and gave her a short haircut. When she was 13, she wore a white and blue kimono, but as she got older, she grew out her hair and wore a long kimono with flowers on her sleeves.
Advertisement Personality Anastasia has a crafty personality. She always puts benefitting herself first, though as a merchant, she prefers when both she and the one she negotiates with mutually benefit from transactions. Anastasia herself admits that she is greedy, and it stems from the fact that she was an orphan, and she is willing to proclaim this publicly to others, as she did during her speech at the start of the Royal Selection. She is highly realistic, always remembering her position as a candidate for the Royal Selection while speaking with other candidates, no matter how friendly or idealistic they are, and she is also bluntly honest when she needs to be, directly claiming that Emilia had no chance in the selection due to the widespread prejudice against half-elves and her appearance resembling Satella's, as well as when she told Subaru that a person's past actions will not disappear, both during the events of Arc 3 and when regarding how to deal with Spica. She is also not above manipulating people to gather information, as she did with Subaru during one failed loop when he was going through extreme anger and tunnel vision. In times of crisis, Anastasia has a tendency to act as the voice of reason and will often act as a leader, typically directing people appropriately. Likewise, she is not unwilling to work with others during such times. She also loves food like daisukiyaki and is mentioned to love liquor. Anastasia also seems to prefer being around demi-humans, fluffier ones in particular, and she speaks in a Kansai dialect. She is ordinarily a rather wary person. Though she at first thought of Subaru as nothing more than a loud-mouthed individual due to his outburst at the Royal Selection Ceremony, after his success during the Subjugation of the White Whale and Subjugation of Sloth, she immediately looked into his history. Though she ultimately passed him off as just some lucky kid, his actions during the Battle for Priestella reignited her curiosity. Similarly, she is also rather cautious of people similar in shrewdness as herself, such as Priscilla Barielle. Though, in Priscilla's case, she also disliked her for her chaotic personality and actions and is willing to exclude her from certain gatherings precisely because of this. Despite her faults, she is actually sympathetic and has a strong sense of duty. Although she typically does not like to show weakness[5] and often covers up her intentions with an objectively realistic attitude that she crafted as a merchant, she is willing to act when her friends are in trouble, whether that is acting out in anger at a merchant who ripped off her knight or even crossing countries when another friend was kidnapped. In the case of the latter, she was even willing to buy the services of the strongest man in Kararagi, Halibel, to search for the friend.[6] Likewise, although they were forced back to being rivals with her since their more recent troubles had been taken care of, when she spoke with Emilia following the Great Disaster, she was not against remaining friends with her, regardless of the outcome of the Royal Selection, and she was even willing to accept another outing with the Royal Selection candidates like what her original intentions were for meeting them in Priestella. She is also a lot more easily frustrated around certain acquaintances; when Halibel speaks to her, treating her like he used to when she was a child, she often finds herself pouting and annoyed by it. This being said, she is also afraid of losing her connections with the people around her.
- #20Satella
Keys: Satella
Satella (サテラ) is the Witch of Envy responsible for the Great Calamity 400 years ago who is currently sealed in the Evil Sealing Stone Shrine, located somewhere in the Augria Sand Dunes, close to where the Pleiades Watchtower is currently standing. In reality, the Witch of Envy (嫉妬の魔女) is a separate personality that formed when she took in the incompatible Witch Factor of Envy. Satella formally debuted in Arc 4 as a supporting character, whilst the Witch serves as an overarching antagonist throughout the series, appearing in most arcs so far, one way or another.
She possesses a yet-unexplained connection to both Subaru and Emilia. Throughout the series, the Witch silences Subaru whenever he attempts to talk about his Authority. Satella herself did not debut until Arc 4, where she and the other Witches helped Subaru accept himself and change his views on Return by Death.
Satella, according to legend, is a half-human/half-elf demi-human woman with silver hair and eyes that are amethyst with a bluish tint to them. As a half-elf, Satella's ears are noticeably pointed. When she manifested before Petelgeuse in a realm devoid of light, the details of her face and the shape of her body were both obscured by pitch-black veils made out of mist. The mist that engulfed her form was so impossibly dark that it blotted out the darkness of the realm. In this state, Satella's eyes can be seen glowing brightly in contrast to the rest of her form.
Beyond the shadows that obscure her appearance, Satella wears dark-purple thigh-high socks with golden frills on the top, a dark-purple one-piece mini-dress with golden flower decorations, and a long dark veil that covered a part of her face. Additionally, she also has an earring on her left ear.
When she attacked the Sanctuary in Emilia's body, Satella's form was once again obscured. Although the contours of her body were difficult to ascertain, the shadows surrounding her made her seem as though she wore a dress of darkness and had long raven-black hair. Her voice was muffled to the point that it was difficult to distinguish whether it belonged to a man or a woman.
When Subaru encountered her at Echidna's tea party, she wore a black dress made of shadows that seemed to wave in accordance with her heartbeat. Initially, he was unable to see her face because of a black shadow covering her above her neck, which was created out of his reluctance to accept her. However, he later accepts her and becomes able to see her face, mentioning afterwards that she looks exactly the same as Emilia.
Contrary to popular belief, Satella and the Witch of Envy are separate personalities, formed when she took in incompatible Witch Factors. The two personalities tend to fight each other. Both personalities love Subaru, though the Witch of Envy personality is much more aggressive about it, while Satella is much more reasonable and cares deeply about his well-being. Alec Hoshin described Satella as an earnest, reckless, pure, and honest girl.
Age 400+
- #21Echidna
Keys: Echidna
As Echidna from four centuries ago and Echidna from the Castle of Dreams were stated to be two separate entities, the two also differ somewhat in personality. The original Echidna is much more considerate, empathetic, and helpful than her counterpart from the Castle of Dreams. This being said, however, the Castle of Dreams version of Echidna seemed to originally share the same traits with her alternative counterpart four centuries ago, and following her and Al's defeat against a certain enemy, she sacrificed her love and a good portion of what made her the "Witch" in order to become the "Witch of Greed", turning her into the Witch seen in the present day. According to Beatrice, the Echidna that she knew was not an evil person, and Subaru speculates that the difference between the personalities may stem from the fact that the Castle of Dreams version of Echidna was a representation of her younger self. However, whether this is true remains to be confirmed.
Advertisement History Echidna is the daughter of the Warlock of Melancholy, Hector, and the Witch of Vainglory, Pandora.[8][9] Unlike any other Witches across history, Echidna was the only person who was born as a Witch. Echidna's parents were responsible for her birth, having supposedly created her with a specific goal in mind, that goal being unknown.[10] By Echidna's claim, her parents were good-for-nothings, and she learned negative emotions such as contempt and ridicule from them. However, she believed that, from their perspective, her existence was a failed imitation to them.[11] She despised her parents, and at some point in time, she parted ways with them.[12]
Echidna has claimed that she experienced the pains of having excess mana in her body when she was younger. In the years predating the Great Calamity, Echidna travelled alongside Satella, Flugel, Reid Astrea, Farsale Lugunica, and Alec Hoshin for unknown reasons, though according to Alec, it was a journey to save the world. According to Echidna, at the time of their travels, they needed to keep their identities secret. However, at one point during their travels, they ended up in the country of Magrizza. Despite attempting to hide their identities, Farsale declared his own name, resulting in a noble discovering them and inviting them to a banquet of nobles. The nation's crown prince, who was also in attendance at the banquet, became enamored by Echidna and went behind the scenes to arrange a marriage between the two of them, with Echidna's party going along with them after they were split from their capable fighters. However, at some point, for reasons yet to be explained, Reid and Volcanica went on a rampage, ultimately resulting in the marriage being cancelled and them being driven from the nation. It was a short time later that they learned that the Black Serpent destroyed Magrizza. According to Echidna, it was likely that they were being chased by the Black Serpent.
Over four centuries ago, Echidna acted as a tutor for a young Roswaal after saving him from suffering inflicted on him by mana poisoning. In the following years, she created three artificial spirits, with Puck being the first created by Echidna and Beatrice being the last.[13]. She also started researching means of immortality by transferring her soul into a body which belonged to someone else. Throughout the years, she gathered humans and demi-humans alike, in order to create a perfect "sanctuary" which would be able to support the barrier, and after the Sanctuary was created, she would often travel back and forth between her castle, Kugelschreiber Castle, with Beatrice. When Roswaal was 16 years old, he faced off against Hector and after being defeated and nearly killed, Echidna saved his life and engaged Melancholy. After Ryuzu Meyer, the Apostle of Greed, sacrificed herself in order to bypass the requirements and instantly activate the barrier, she successfully fended Hector off and saved the lives of everyone in the Sanctuary. At some point during her immortality experiments, she made numerous copies of Ryuzu, one of which was given the name Sphinx after the mythological monster. However, despite having obtained her knowledge of the magical arts, Echidna disposed of her as a failure, unintentionally setting her upon the world with barely the ability to survive.
According to her, royals of every country came to visit Echidna to borrow her wisdom at some point in the past when she was alive. Echidna mentioned that she has a connection with Kararagi since she "helped found it". She also became acquainted with the Divine Dragon and Emilia's Mother. She also hired Petelgeuse at one point to act as some form of mentor to Beatrice.
- #22Minerva
Keys: Minerva
Minerva (ミネルヴァ) was the Witch of Wrath. She formally debuted in Arc 4 as a supporting character.
In life, Minerva, with her Authority of Wrath, healed every injured person in her sight, creating natural disasters in the process. Though she met her end after she was caught in a trap due to the elves and killed by the Witch of Envy, her soul was preserved by the Witch of Greed in the Castle of Dreams placed within the Sanctuary. Following the events of Arc 4, her soul was taken into a glintstone necklace that Omega wears on her travels. Minerva was a beautiful young woman who stood at exactly five feet tall. She has been noted to have been in her late teens years and had vivid slightly-slanted sky-blue eyes that were almost transparent. Her long gleaming golden hair was tied into a messy ponytail on the left side of her head that rubbed against her face. A pretty pink and blue love heart pin was also fastened to the left side of her head. She had bountiful breasts and a shapely bottom that lent her a fair deal of sex appeal in the eyes of Natsuki Subaru.
Her primary outfit consisted of an extremely short sleeveless form-fitting one-piece purple dress with a cleavage-displaying cut-out, a translucent sleeveless light purple bodysuit worn under all of her clothes, a pair of thigh-high white boots with purple interior, a pair of long white gloves with purple interior, and a long white sleeveless coat with a cleavage-displaying cut-out that allowed a part of her dress-covered breasts to spill out. Minerva didn't like conflict as she always lamented it while healing people. She also only cared about what was in front of her, stating that she didn't care about what she couldn't see, such as the side effects of her ability. She was seen being prideful of her work, and often acted very hostile by punching people out of nowhere or scolding them for putting their "lives in danger", however her adorable way of doing so and the notion of helping, made it impossible for people to get offended by her actions. She often mistook her sadness for anger and/or wrath, using it as an excuse for crying. Her outbursts of anger were described as being very adorable. She hated the world for making people do despicable things and hurting other living beings. Due to her naive personality, Minerva was said to be extremely easy to fool Age 400+
- #23Sekhmet
Keys: Sekhmet
Sekhmet (セクメト) was the Witch of Sloth. She formally debuted in Arc 4 as a supporting character.
Age 400+
In life, Sekhmet, with her Authority of Sloth, clashed with those who could interrupt her unending rest, and also attempted to quell the Witch of Pride when she went on her rampages. Though she met her end falling off of the Great Waterfall in a battle with Volcanica, her soul was preserved by the Witch of Greed in the Castle of Dreams placed within the Sanctuary. Following the events of Arc 4, her soul was taken into a glintstone necklace that Omega wears on her travels.
Sekhmet was described as a beautiful yet languid woman in her mid-twenties with absurdly long, unkempt, magenta hair that went down to her toes. She was usually dressed in a sultry outfit that was primarily black and complemented her voluptuous and feminine physique rather perfectly. Her skin was described as pale, to the point one would consider it unhealthy; her face gave off an extremely debilitated and apathetic look. When Subaru first met her, he mistook her for a big ball of magenta fur. True to her position as the Witch of Sloth, Sekhmet's personality could be summed up in one word: lazy, as could also be seen through her appearance. She was also lazy enough that she once even found breathing to be a pain and gave off a gloomy atmosphere.
As expected from her age, Sekhmet was rather mature and even philosophical at times. She usually remained neutral in arguments. However, if she deemed someone right, she always jumped on their side and assisted them as much as she could.
- #24Daphne
Keys: Daphne
Daphne (ダフネ) was the Witch of Gluttony. Mentioned throughout the story, she formally debuted in Arc 4 as a supporting character.
In life, Daphne, with her Authority of Gluttony, created witchbeasts in an effort to combat world hunger. Though she met her end starving to death in a "sand sea", her soul was preserved by the Witch of Greed in the Castle of Dreams placed within the Sanctuary. Following the events of Arc 4, her soul was taken into a glintstone necklace that Omega wears on her travels. Daphne had shoulder length ashen hair which she had tied in two tails. Her appearance was that of a 13 or 14 year old child. She was dressed in a pitch-black straitjacket which she wore over her white clothing, that were chained to her coffin. Both of her eyes were completely covered by a blindfold, wrapped to cross over the center of her face, which lent to her appearance having a more witch-like aura as opposed to other Witches of Sin. Despite her eerie and off-putting aura, she could be quite adorable at times. Her eyes were golden yellow, with her left eye resembling a closed mouth with teeth, whereas her right eye had a visible pupil and resembled an open mouth.
Daphne herself was chained to a black coffin which was mostly seen standing vertically. Daphne named it the Centipede Coffin. On her command, the coffin's lower part would open up and reveal eight crab-like legs that would move itself and its host anywhere Daphne wished to go. She stated her coffin operated on her sweat, saliva, and other bodily wastes produced by her. Subaru described it as a living being, similar to crabs or spiders but more repulsive. The coffin itself was actually a witchbeast created by Daphne long ago, for the sole purpose of serving her as transport.
As the Witch of Gluttony, Daphne's reason for living was to feel full, causing her to care about the amount more than taste and hunger. She was also stated to repeatedly vomiting out food and eat it again, although she seems to have indulged in such acts only when there was no more food left. If that option failed, she would resort to eating objects she could chew, such as rugs, curtains, clothes, etc. In an effort to try and get rid of the never ending hunger, Daphne created witchbeasts but soon after lost control of them and accidentally released them into the world. Despite the threat the witchbeasts present, they were created with a positive mindset - to save the world from hunger. Her view on hunger was bizarre and weird, stating that those who try to eat others should be wary of being eaten themselves, therefore she was unable to comprehend Subaru's counterarguments to her self-serving theory.
- #25Julius
Keys: Julius
Julius Juukulius (ユリウス・ユークリウス) is Anastasia Hoshin's knight and a member of the Royal Guard. He is a supporting character in Re:Zero, with pivotal roles in both Arc 3 and Arc 6, while having a lesser supporting role in Arc 5 and Arc 8. Julius also played the role of a protagonist in Ex Volume 4, which is set roughly 3–4 months before the start of the main story and half a year before the start of the Royal Selection.
Though born a commoner, he was adopted into the Juukulius household following his parents’ deaths, where he would eventually become the next in line to take over the house. Joining the Royal Guard, he became known as the Finest of Knights, respected across the entirety of the knights’ order, and later, he’d become Anastasia’s knight, effectively joining her camp during the Royal Selection. Unfortunately, his name was devoured by the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, leaving him forgotten from the memories of all except Natsuki Subaru. Age 22
Julius is a tall young man of a well-built muscular stature with yellow eyes and gleaming light purple hair that is arranged neatly with a strand hanging down his face. He almost exclusively wears the formal Royal Guard uniform. When he fought with Subaru, he took off his Royal Guard's coat and wore a black suit with blue borders.
After his fight with Reid Astrea in Arc 6, Julius received a cut directly under his left eye. Due to the nature of the cut, Julius is left permanently scarred for life. Personality
As a member of Lugunica's nobility, Julius acts in a proper fashion, always having an air of nobility and conviction. He is also considerate and doesn't forget to show care toward others. He also shows a strict side, giving out accurate assessments of others whether they're good or bad, which is a result of his upbringing as an elite, whilst currently, he believes that he and others can do better than they currently are.
- #26Reinhard van Astrea
Keys: Reinhard
Overall Power On numerous occasions, Reinhard has been proclaimed to be the strongest character within the series, both by the author and by the characters within the story. Reinhard's level of strength, skill, and survivability are so ridiculously absurd that it is effectively impossible to defeat him no matter how much one plans, with the only ways to deal with him being to take hostages to force coercion or by providing him with a threat that he is incapable of ignoring; even throwing him to the moon and killing him cannot spell his defeat. His strength is such that he could fight against any of the world's other strongest combatants and always come out victorious, including the Blue Lightning, the Admirer, the Beast of the End, and even go toe to toe with the Sin Archbishop of Greed and Witch of Envy, and it is because he is so impossibly powerful that the other three of the Four Great Nations had a law specifically made to keep Reinhard within the country. Furthermore, with his numerous and ever-growing list of Divine Protections, he is effectively incapable of having his strength inhibited and can become stronger through all kinds of methods, though even without his Divine Protection, he would still be impossible to defeat.
Advertisement Divine Protections Divine Protection Acquisition: Reinhard has the ability to request any Divine Protection he feels like he needs in a specific situation and permanently keep them. This gives him access to a wide array of Divine Protections. His requests may be granted to him by Od Lagna, which is even capable of creating new Divine Protections that have never existed before, but sometimes there may be an error in conveying his intention, and Reinhard does not receive a proper Divine Protection. Furthermore, it should be noted that Reinhard has not been stated to receive any ability he wishes as a Divine Protection, meaning that any desired abilities must first exist as a Divine Protection.
Divine Protection Erasure: He can also erase Divine Protections from his possession, as seen when he gained and erased his Divine Protection of Mind-Changing when he was a five-year-old child, before he even became the Sword Saint. However, while he is able to request a Divine Protection if only one of it can exist at a time and another individual is already in possession of it, as is the case with Meili Portroute and her Divine Protection of Demon Manipulation, he chooses not to request such a power after he accidentally took the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint from his grandmother, as taking it left her without it.
Divine Protection of the Sword Saint (剣聖の加護 Kensei no Kago): As the current generation's Sword Saint, Reinhard is the current possessor of the title's respective Divine Protection, which he inherited when he was 5 years old after the passing of his grandmother, the previous generation's Sword Saint Theresia van Astrea. This Divine Protection allowed Reinhard to instantly reach the very zenith of his swordsman potential. Immediately after receiving it, the five-year-old boy swiftly defeated the current Deputy-Commander of the Royal Knights and his father, Heinkel, in a duel. The Divine Protection also allows Reinhard to see the trajectories of incoming attacks in form of white rays, be it sword or axe slashes, or incoming arrows or knives; by simply following the optimal path showed to him by the Sword God, Reinhard will parry every single incoming attack, hit every weak spot of enemies and come out victorious. According to the author, even if he didn't have this Divine Protection, Reinhard's sword skills would be the same.[11]
Reinhard skillfully parrying Elsa's lightning-fast multi-directional slashes with his Divine Protections. Reinhard skillfully parrying Elsa's lightning-fast multi-directional slashes with his Divine Protections. 1/5 Various Divine Protections: Reinhard holds an insanely rich arsenal of Divine Protections. While he has numerous combat-oriented protections, he also has apparently useless or variably specific protections as well: being able to cook various things well, perform art perfectly, having lightning not strike him, having his view unobstructed by fog, revitalizing plant life around him, dress fashionably for any occasion, tell apart salt from sugar, etc. In total, Reinhard is said to possess at least 251 Divine Protections, as calculated by Al,[12] and the amount of them will not stop growing as long as he feels like he needs them.
Revival: Due to having the Divine Protection of the Phoenix, Reinhard is capable of coming back to life even after he has been killed, recovering from any and all wounds that were inflicted upon him.[13] With each revival, he obtains another version of this Divine Protection, essentially preventing him from dying at all. Also, he can choose the location in which he revives, and he can use this aspect to effectively teleport to any location in the world at the temporary cost of his life.[14] Projectile Repulsion: Thanks to one of his Divine Protections, the majority of attacks that revolve around firing a projectile at Reinhard will curve around him as if a barrier were wrapped around him.
- #27Theresia van Astrea
Keys: Theresia
Theresia van Astrea (テレシア・ヴァン・アストレア) was Wilhelm van Astrea's wife and the previous generation's Sword Saint who fought and single handedly brought an end to the Demi-Human War roughly 40 years before the start of the main story. Though a minor character overall, she is pivotal to the character arcs of her relatives and later serves as a secondary antagonist in Arc 5.
After dying during the Great Conquest 14 years before the story began, Wilhelm vowed to avenge her by killing the White Whale, which he does in Arc 3. Unbeknownst to everyone, though, the Witch of Vainglory was involved in her death. Following her death, the Witch Cult reanimated her as a corpse soldier and she was controlled like a puppet during the events of Arc 5. In the end, her grandson, Reinhard, put her out of her misery, an act that completely shattered his relationship with Wilhelm. Age 20
She was tall and had long red hair with flowers attached to it, tying it in two ponytails, while a big part of her hair stayed loose. She had blue eyes and a white complexion.
When operating as a knight of the Royal Guard, she used to wear a short white dress with armor and a white cloak over it, with a pair of dark purple gloves and tights of the same color. In her uniform, she used to wear high white boots and tied her hair in a high ponytail.
In her free time, she wore a long green and white off-the-shoulder dress with shoulder straps decorated with flowers. Her common outfit had white trimmings and pink patches on the dress in a form of bows, with one of then being on her chest. Theresia also used to wear small red shoes. Personality
Theresia was described as an open-minded, sociable person who had a fatal flaw of shoving aside her own personal feelings while only focusing on those of others. Despite her immense talent and lineage, she never wanted to be a swordsman or take up the mantle of the "Sword Saint" due to a lack of interest and, more over, fear of her own power, which easily stripped the lives from others regardless of her will. However, certain circumstances forced her to resign to her fate in order to end the civil war and protect the loved ones she had left. This eventually led Wilhelm to "take" the sword from her and free her from a life of bondage by duty. Theresia was an avid flower lover and could be found viewing them in ruins, where she and Wilhelm routinely met in her spare time.
- #28Shaula
Keys: Shaula
Shaula (シャウラ) is a humanoid witchbeast and the apprentice of the Sage, Flugel. Mentioned throughout the series due to being confused for her master, she formally debuted in Arc 6 as a secondary antagonist for the beginning and climax as well a supporting character throughout the majority of the arc.
Tasked with guarding the Pleiades Watchtower, she initially acted as an obstacle toward Subaru and his companions. However, she later took a neutral stance when they started taking the tower's trials. Unfortunately, after the rules were violated, she transformed into her witchbeast form and attacked them due to her contract. In the end, she was turned into a tiny scorpion and is currently in Meili's care, as she is instinctively attracted to her Divine Protection. Age 400+
Shaula had green eyes with three additional red dots around her pupils and long blackish brown hair which she wore tied together in what she referred to as a scorpion tail. She was tall and had a model physique along with a large chest, all in all, being a very attractive woman. She only wore a black bikini-bra, a bow-tie, a necklace, black hotpants accompanied with an orange belt, and a tattered black-and-orange cloak, which were of the same color pallet as Subaru's outfit.
When she took the form of a colossal scorpion, Shaula had a jet black body, glowing red eyes and sharp pincers, which could be detached at-will. She also had a long tail with a stinger at the end of it. When entering her Attack Hue phase, her color gradually shifted from jet black to blood red.
Shaula is described to be like a girl at the bottom of a girls caste who runs errands for others. She is absolutely loyal to Flugel, however, she tends to be thoughtless so she is unfit for mental work. Also, she is unable to tell people apart and therefore refers to Subaru as her master based on smell alone as he appears to smell the same as Flugel.
Despite her usual empty-headed, unconcerned manner, Shaula has been shown to show deep emotion in certain situations. Namely when she concealed the existence of the fifth rule of the tower in an effort to spend more time with Subaru.
- #29Regulus Corneas
Keys: Regulus
Regulus Corneas (レグルス・コルニアス) is a Sin Archbishop of the Witch Cult, representing Greed. He debuted in the second interlude of Arc 3 alongside Lye Batenkaitos, where he took on Crusch's military convoy, completely decimating it alongside its passengers, which included Rem. Later, he appeared in Emilia's first trial during the events of Arc 4, where he played an antagonistic role under Pandora's in the lead-up to the Permafrost of Elior Forest, and he also appeared as one of the primary antagonists of Arc 5.
As the strongest and one of the oldest Sin Archbishops in the Witch Cult, Regulus had an air of mystery surrounding him and was responsible for many brutal mass-slaughters and annihilations in the century prior to the beginning of the story, including the destruction of the Fortified City of Garkla in Vollachia. During the events of Arc 4, it was revealed he acted as the head of the radical faction inside the Witch Cult 100 years ago.[1] During the events of Arc 5, he was one of the Sin Archbishops who sieged the Watergate City of Priestella, where he was subsequently defeated by a joint force consisting of Reinhard van Astrea, Natsuki Subaru, and Emilia. He drowned underneath the streets of the city.
Regulus's face had no eye-catching features and he had golden eyes that were usually murky and disinterested, but started to sparkle when he passionately engaged in his long monologues. His modestly handsome face wasn't particularly attractive or unattractive, while his hair was neither short nor long and without a distinct style, however, it was naturally white despite his youthful appearance.[2] Regulus' white skin that lacked any semblance of a tan, coupled with his white hair and predominately white clothing, made him seem as though he was the epitome of the colour white. In fact, the complete devoid of colour exhibited by Regulus' physical appearance gave him the impression of a sickly person of which all colour had drained away.
Regulus' primary attire primary piece of clothing was a pure-white greca-style overcoat that reached down to his ankles and had golden-edged cuffs, a set of five golden buttons running down the torso of his centre front that usually ensured that the coat was closed above the hipline, and golden-highlighted edging. The inside of the coat was black and featured vertical golden stripes travelling down the entire coat. The most striking part of his coat was the opulent gold and black high-neck collar it sported that had the symbol for infinity inscribed on it, perhaps reflecting the nature of Regulus' Authority. Under his coat, he wore a long-sleeved deep-blue-coloured dress shirt, white snow-white trousers, and a pair of white shoes, the latter two of which were both the same shade as his hair and overcoat. Usually, only the cuffs of the dress shirt could be seen as Regulus's long overcoat tended to obscure it almost completely. Regulus had a single deep-blue teardrop-shaped earring that was the same colour as his dress shirt and dangled from his right earlobe thanks to a thin gold chain attaching it. Regulus was talkative, and tended to describe himself as unselfish, despite representing greed. He would often go on and on about trivial matters in the most incoherent ways, usually leaving the other party confused and/or unable to follow his thoughts, ideals and values. Due to his extremely prideful personality, however, he often forced his own selfishness on others and tried to justify it.
- #30Pandora
Keys: Pandora
Pandora (パンドラ) is the Witch of Vainglory who has a connection to the Witch Cult. Due to her seeming command over the Cult, she is arguably one of the main antagonists of Re:Zero.
Pandora is a witch wrapped in mystery, secretly colluding with the Witch Cult for reasons unknown. Though her appearances have been minimal, Pandora has been shown to be responsible for major events within the story, such as taking part in the Permafrost of Elior Forest and being involved in the death of the previous Sword Saint during the Great Conquest.
Pandora had the outward appearance of a young woman with a small, delicate body. Her long, straight, platinum hair was seemingly transparent and gave off a soft glow akin to the shine of the sun. The radiance of her hair created the effect of a glistening waterfall that travelled down her slender shoulders and rested slightly below her knee line. Her eyes, with slit pupils, were as deep blue as the sea and were framed by long eyelashes. Pandora's inhuman beauty was terrifying enough to make any person who set their eyes upon her incapable of stopping themselves from trembling. Her charming facial features were considered the ideal image of the word "beauty" accepted by human beings. If it were possible to kill through beauty alone, it would be Pandora's radiance that would be capable of doing so. A normal man would feel overwhelming happiness in the event that Pandora made even a casual glance towards him. She is beautiful enough to be said to make others tremble with her beauty and that even God would hesitate to touch her.
Pandora's clothing is incredibly simplistic. The only thing the Witch wore was a single sheet of white fabric that covered her torso and traipsed over her like a poncho. The decoration the fabric had was a line of deep blue stiches at the top and a matching blue ribbon. Aside from her gown, the sole piece of material that could be found on the Witch was a blue ribbon tied into her hair that was similar to the one that decorated her dress. Her legs and feet were both completely bare.
She gives off an important aura, and her voice has a magic-like charm that seems to bind the bodies and souls of others. Just by being looked at or talked to, one can experience happiness enough to die for. Personality
At first glance, Pandora is dignified and graceful, with a generally calm demeanor. This calm exterior hides an extremely selfish and sociopathic personality, willing to do anything to achieve her goals. She had no problem with manipulating Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti into killing his beloved Fortuna and driving him into insanity, and she even told Emilia that she would rip up Elior Forest to open the seal if she did not comply with her demands. Despite these traits, she never showed anger toward anyone, sending Regulus Corneas away when he turned on her and speaking calmly toward Emilia despite the latter repeatedly killing her.
She had an abject lack of guilt stemming from her actions, showing no form of remorse when she caused someone mental or physical pain or even when she killed innocent people and concocted catastrophes. The Witch only saw the people around her as pawns or pets, not actually viewing them as intelligent creatures worthy of being considered her equals in any way.
- #31Typhon
Keys: Typhon
Typhon (テュフォン) was the Witch of Pride. Mentioned throughout the series, she formally debuted in Arc 4 as a supporting character.
Age 400
In life, Typhon, with her Authority of Pride, judged those she encountered, leaving behind countless bodies in her wake. Though she met her end, drowning in the trap that was the Watergate City of Priestella, her soul was preserved by the Witch of Greed in the Castle of Dreams placed within the Sanctuary. Following the events of Arc 4, her soul was taken into a glintstone necklace that Omega wears on her travels.
Typhon was a young girl who looked as though she was around ten years of age. She had large round red eyes that brimmed with curiosity and short messy dark green hair that fell down to her chin, stylized into a bob-cut of sorts. Her skin was dark and her face possessed an adorability expected in a girl of her age. She gives off an aura of a lovely young girl. Contrary to her true nature as the Witch of Pride, she evoked images of youth, innocence, and purity to those that met her. She does not give off the impression of being a witch.
Typhon's lovely clothing helped complement her youthful disposition. Her ensemble included a wreath of blue flowers of different shades decorating the top of her head, a blue armband on each arm, matching light blue scrunchies worn on both of her wrists, a pair of pieces of white material that covered her ankles and had a matching pair of blue flowers attached to them, and a white sundress with light blue lining and a row of blue flowers as its bottom hem. The dress was translucent below its hemline, as Typhon's bare legs could partially be seen under the fabric. The Witch of Pride was never seen wearing anything on her feet. Personality
Typhon acted very childlike, which reflected on her actual age, often doing things on impulse, not reading the mood properly and rarely listening to other people. She had trouble understanding heavier, philosophical topics, as seen when she didn't understand Subaru's view on "good" and "bad" people, though, her replies sometimes tended to be different from what one would expect from a 10 year old child. She showed heavy interest in people's "sins", more often than not disregarding topics and entire conversations (often important) just so she could figure out if a person is an "evildoer" or not.
Despite her young age, Typhon had a strong sense of justice and showed no remorse to those she considered guilty. Instead of judging people off of their actions, Typhon condemned those she came across over their feelings of guilt. She showed the capacity for manipulation, as she used her adorable charm to her advantage when getting Subaru to hold her hand so she could test his guilt.
- #32Carmilla
Keys: Carmilla
Carmilla (カーミラ) was the Witch of Lust. She formally debuted in Arc 4 as a supporting character.
Age 400+
In life, Carmilla, with her Authority of Lust, captivated all who knew of her, unintentionally starting rebellions and wars in the process. Though she met her end, burned at the stake somewhere in Lugunica, her soul was preserved by the Witch of Greed in the Castle of Dreams placed within the Sanctuary. Following the events of Arc 4, her soul was taken into a glintstone necklace that Omega wears on her travels. Carmilla stood at 160 centimeters tall, making her taller than the likes of Rem but shorter than the likes of Emilia. She had round red downcast eyes and long pale-pink hair that was parted down the middle and tied into loose asymmetrical bunches falling down the front of her shoulders that went all the way to her hips. As a reflection of her personality, the Witch of Lust's physical demeanour more commonly than not conveyed meekness. Her face looked very refined, and, as opposed to being a standout beauty, Carmilla's charm was derived more so from how abnormally adorable she was. Although her physique was well-hidden by her clothing, Carmilla was known to have a shapely figure with surprisingly large breasts.
Carmilla, who was averse to exposing her skin, would often resort to wearing baggy clothes that hid her generous physique. Her ensemble consisted of a dark-red dress that reached down to her ankles and had diamond patterns on the bottom, a pair of light-brown boots, a long snow-white coat with a pink collar that covered her dress and reached slightly lower down than it, and an exceedingly long light-green muffler that trailed along the ground behind Carmilla. Overall, the only parts of the Witch of Lust's body that were exposed were her head and her hands. Personality
Carmilla had extremely low self-confidence, often having downcast eyes and overall acted very timid. She tended to stutter and question her own words, more often than not ticking other people off by doing so. She spoke in a very polite manner, trying not to cause any disagreements or disapproval. At times, she showed a rather submissive side of her, when dealing with her fellow Witches of Sin, as seen when she had no problem in taking part of Echidna's scheme to lure Subaru into the Castle of Dreams, despite knowing it would end badly for her. Due to her timid personality and low self-confidence, she was frequently seen shying away from stern gazes, often pleading people not to hit her or exercise any form of violence towards her. This behavior likely stems from her past bad experiences with other people.
- #33Elior Forest
Keys: Elior Forest
The Great Elior Forest (エリオール大森林, Eriōru Dai Shinrin), also known as the Freezing Forest (氷結の森, Hyōketsu no Mori) is a vast forest located in northeast Lugunica. The forest is first featured in Arc 4. It belongs to the current head of the Mathers family, Roswaal L. Mathers.
Elior Forest is a dense woodland forest located in northeastern Lugunica, southwest from the Mining City of Ganacks and the Gina Mountain Range. Elior Forest is covered in snow and ice, and is home to unnatural mana storms and many witchbeasts. A large amount of glintstones grows in certain areas in the forest thanks to abundance of mana from mana streams littered throughout the woodland. House Karsten has recently acquired rights to mine this resource as part of the agreement for the establishment of an alliance between the Emilia Camp and the Crusch Camp.
The forest is currently home to the elves who were frozen 100 years ago during the Permafrost of Elior Forest. 49 of them remain frozen as picturesque ice statues. For over 7 years, it had been the home of Emilia and Puck until Emilia left the forest to join the Royal Selection.
- #34Great Rabbit
Keys: Great Rabbit, Rabbits, · Secondary:
The Great Rabbit (大兎, Ōusagi) One of the Three Great Witchbeasts, When creating the Great Rabbit, Daphne imprinted her own sense of hunger onto the witchbeast, resulting in the creature feeling a constant urge to eat and when Subaru experienced the same sense during his encounter with her, he feverishly began eating his own right arm (though this only occurs in the web novel). The Great Rabbit's primary concern at all times was satisfying the insatiable hunger it felt. It considered anything or anyone as suitable food and would devour the flesh, bones, and blood of its targets, leaving nothing behind. It was no more intelligent than most animals, and wasn't capable of making observations about its prey or whatever scenario it was in. It would find new prey by following strong magical signatures to their source, as living creatures generally had the highest concentration of magical energy that could be found. Because of this, it was possible to lure the Great Rabbit to a specific location by providing a strong magical trace for it to follow. Despite being made up of numerous singular rabbits, the Great Rabbit functioned as a singular consciousness. Because of this, the entire collection of Rabbits would always stick closely together. The hunger that the Rabbit felt was so extreme that, if there was no food to consume within a convenient distance, the individual rabbits would consume each other in an attempt to sate the consciousness' thirst for food. As such, the Great Rabbit was unique in the fact that it would not try to prevent its demise in the event that its life was threatened, as only satisfying its unending hunger mattered to it.
- #35Roswaal Manor
Keys: Roswaal Manor, Manor
Roswaal Manor (ロズワール邸, Rozuwāru-tei) is the name given to two mansions owned by Roswaal L. Mathers. One of them, dubbed the old Roswaal Manor (旧ロズワール邸, Kyū Rozuwāru-tei), was a reserve mansion located near Arlam Village. The second manor, dubbed the new Roswaal Manor (新ロズワール邸, Shin Rozuwāru-tei), is the main residence of the Mathers family, located near the Industrial City of Costuul.
The manor is a giant white house with five watchtowers, the fifth of which standing in the center, a giant garden, and a black roof. It has a massive basement that is almost as big as the surface of the mansion itself. At the end of Arc 4, the old mansion burned down, and Roswaal, along with the members of the Emilia Camp, moved to his main mansion. Rooms
Entry: Upon entering, it was noted that the mansion retains great elegance. There are two pillars with a pair of lamps each. In addition to having high class designs, there are lights near each door, as well as vases with flowers. On the road, there are two routes to the sides, right and left, and stairs to go up to the next floor. Kitchen: In that place the servants of Roswaal prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is full of plates, pots, jars, rollers, knives and other things that can be used to prepare food. In case someone needs to buy more food, they go to a market and transport the products by putting them in a barrel. Bathroom: The bathroom can be used as a sauna and has few marble pillars in it. It has a bath in the center of the room with a golden pillar in the center of the bath. Washbasin: It is used for personal hygiene, and it contains the same white washbasin, a toilet with a brown lid, and a mirror decorated with a golden frame. Guest's Room: It is the place where the margrave invites their visitors to talk. It has three green pieces of furniture and a small rectangular table in the center. There are also windows with light green curtains. There is a fireplace, and above it is a portrait. Dining Room: In the dining room, all the people in the mansion gather to eat. There is a large table covered with a white tablecloth, with chairs on each side, and regardless of the time, lights are placed on the table. The wall is green with white spaces. Behind the table is a figure in a painting, possibly a relative of the Roswaal family. Forbidden Library (禁書庫): The Forbidden Library was a massive library built by the Witch of Greed with the purpose of housing her vast knowledge converted into Magical Books, exclusively in the old Roswaal Manor. Some time before the Witch's demise, she installed Beatrice as the Library's keeper, until the arrival of That Person. The Forbidden Library was mentioned to be the most knowledgeable place in Lugunica. Appearance-wise, it's a huge two-story space with a spiral stair in the centre of the room. The second floor consists of a large balcony which is filled to the brim with bookshelves. Despite it being accessible through any of the Roswaal's Manor's doors, the Library itself isn't inherently part of the mansion, as it exists in a separate dimension that can be accessed through the teleportation mechanic called Door Crossing. During the fight for the Roswaal's Mansion in Arc 4's climax, Subaru, Otto and Petra managed to set the mansion aflame, which resulted in the entire mansion and the Forbidden Library burning to the ground. Furthermore, before her demise, Echidna made a mechanism that would erase the knowledge from every book in the library, should Beatrice abandon her role as the Forbidden Library's librarian. This was done so people wouldn't kill Beatrice in order to get their hands on the infinite knowledge hidden in the Forbidden Library. Garden: The garden is located on the outskirts of the mansion. There are several paths one can walk along. On the sides are small fields full of flowers, as well as some trees and bushes, and several rest areas.
- #36Priestella
Keys: Priestella
Priestella (プリステラ, Purisutera), also known as the Watergate City of Priestella (水門都市プリステラ, Suimon Toshi Purisutera) or the Capital of Water (水の都, Mizu no Miyako), is one of the Five Great Cities in the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica. It is located near the western border with Kararagi and the Tigracy River in the far western part of the country. The city of Priestella was formerly led by the Priestellan Council of Ten until nine of them were slaughtered during the Battle for Priestella, leaving only Kiritaka Muse alive.
Priestella is a large, upside-down shaped dome-like walled city, located directly at the Kingdom's border with the Kararagi City States. It was built approximately four centuries ago, using four centuries old combination of technologies. Furthermore, the city was said to have been built by none other than Hoshin of the Wilderness, and throughout history, the city itself was a cause of considerable territorial disputes between the two nations, though it currently belongs to Lugunica. Due to Kararagi's influence, the city has notable traces of the so-called Kararagi-style and Jabanees-style architecture and overall culture; inns that are extremely similar to the traditional Japanese-style inns both Al and Subaru are familiar with from Japan, can be visited all across the city, with one of them even being the location of the initial meeting of four of the Royal Selection Candidates' camps at the start of Arc 5.
Priestella is the closest city to Kararagi, with the Tigracy River separating the two. It is a beautiful city and a famous tourist location that is built in the middle of a large lake, with waterways running through the city. The waterways divide the city into four blocks called City Districts which are numbered clockwise from the main gate. According to Subaru, the city sees most of its traffic in the First and Second Districts.[1]
The city itself is built like a sports arena with a basin at its centre. In the event of a flood, the centre would be instantly submerged. In order to have water canals in which people could travel via water dragons, Hoshin used an intricate magical mechanisms which stand at each of the four cardinal points–the control towers. These towers are massive stone pillars, and according to Emilia, they all are some sort of complex meteors.[2] They are used to regulate the flow of water throughout the entire city, either lowering or rising the water levels. Their main purposes, however, are so to prevent the water from building up in one specific spot (in this case, in the centre of the city), send the water through water canals and creating some sort of artificial rivers (as mentioned above) and to flood the city if necessary. The magical mechanism is even capable of making half of the water from one single waterway flow in one direction while the other one flows in the other direction, effectively making Priestella's waterways flow in both directions.
Priestella was governed over by the Priestellan Council of Ten, a group of ten powerful and wealthy individuals, with Kiritaka Muse acting as their leader of sorts. Due to the influx of Kararagi's culture at Priestella's border, it was inspired by Kararagi's League of Cities,[3] which is made up of ten representatives from each of Kararagi's ten major cities. During the Witch Cult's attack on the city in Arc 5, everyone in the council save for Kiritaka were slaughtered, presumably by the Witch Cult; however, according to Capella Emerada Lugunica, they were uninvolved and she theorized that the one who killed them was Al.
During said attack, a large portion of Priestella was destroyed. When one of the water gates was shortly opened, it allowed the water to flood the district for a short time. While the Muse Company took considerable damage, City Hall was completely decimated during the fight against Capella. Meanwhile, the Third District, where the fight against Regulus took place, left many buildings crushed, destroyed, and erased, numerous holes were left in the ground, and portions of the district were flooded with water, among other damages. After the fight, the residents began to rebuild upon the damages.
- #37Return by death
Keys: Return by death
Return by Death (死に戻り, Shinimodori): Subaru's trump card and the most recognized ability from the series, Return by Death, allows Subaru and {{user}} to return to an unspecified, unpredictable and uncontrollable "save point", that was set some time before his death.
- #38Emilia
Keys: Emilia
Just like the other Royal Selection Candidates, Emilia is also driven by a strong motive which shapes most of her actions, be it rational or irrational. Following her awakening by Puck in Elior Forest, she desperately tried to do something about the frozen elves in the forest. She cleaned them daily, talked to them, and spent a great deal of time and effort with them, trying to somehow get rid of their icy fate to absolutely no avail. However, a couple of months before the start of the main story, she was visited by an eccentric mage who introduced himself as Roswaal. Though they initially started off on the wrong foot which caused Roswaal and Puck to fight for half a day, the two decided to form a truce, and Roswaal presented Emilia with a plan that would allow her to unfreeze her people in the frozen Forest. By becoming the 42nd monarch of the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica, Emilia would gain access to the Dragon's Blood locked up in the vaults of the Royal Castle, its magical properties possibly able to unfreeze the frozen inhabitants of the Great Elior Forest. Emilia hastily accepted the offer and decided to participate in the Royal Selection and forging a goal of having the Kingdom be equal and free from prejudice.
When she was young, Emilia was a mischievous child who was prone to sneaking out of her room, creating messes, or coming up with schemes like faking stomach pains in order to get attention and get what she wanted. However, she was also kind and wanted to be friends with others, and she would feel guilty at seeing others being troubled by her actions. She was usual seen smiling and playful, and she was often happy. However, following the attack on her village and seeing her family killed and manipulated, she showed a vengeful side when she attacked Pandora and lost control of herself, leading to her powers going out of her control. After losing her memories and waking up about a century later, she was diligent about caring for the frozen people of her village and often felt guilt about their situation. She was also exposed to prejudice and hostility for the first time during her trips to nearby villages and the attack by Melakuera. Because of this, though her kind nature did not diminish, she became somewhat closed off, and she remained naive.
Initially, because of her supposed "selfishness" as well as having to protect herself from the prejudice that was flung toward her, Emilia closed herself off from others and did not entrust others with her emotions or how she felt about different situations she was subjected to, as she was always of the mindset to endure passively and maintain a valiant disposition. Likewise, she was quick to give up on things she didn't understand, blame it on something, and then naively assume that listening to Puck was the right thing to do.[7] This resulted in her becoming both mentally and emotionally fragile, which in turned caused her to be overly obstinate and somewhat childish about certain subjects. This led her to constantly depend on other people for support, most notably Puck or Subaru who became her main pillars of emotional support, and without them, she would become more and more emotionally unstable, to a point where in a failed loop she believed that if she succeeded and completed the task that she had been entrusted, despite having failed so many times, Puck or Subaru would return to her.
In Arc 4, following her period of extreme emotional instability after Puck severed his contract with her and Subaru breaking another promise with her, things that respectively affected her since her only family had supposedly left her and her belief in promises was being casually left aside, Emilia completely lost faith in herself, leading her to hide from others. After having an argument with Subaru, however, in which she spilled all of her own insecurities onto him and believed that he was only looking at her through rose-colored glasses without seeing her flaws, not considering her feelings, not putting his faith in her like she was for him, and breaking his promises which she believed was a sacred thing, Subaru not only threw all of those notions aside but even told her all of those flaws and frustrations to her face, and despite telling her what he really thought of her, he still claim to love her and have faith in her, enabling Emilia to stand up and challenge her painful past in order to overcome the three trials presented by the Witch of Greed. With this and seeing everything that Subaru had carved into Echidna's Tomb, Emilia became significantly stronger both mentally and emotionally, able to withstand Roswaal's harassment, shake his beliefs and view of her, and keep faith in herself, and because of this, she started to become more charismatic and reliable, which even the stalwart Ram had come to truly respect, to the point that she wanted to entrust to her the Royal Selection for Roswaal's sake. In the end, she was able to overcome all of the trials, which each tested her mind and beliefs, and liberated the Sanctuary.
Ice Brand Arts (アイスブランドアーツ, Aisu Burando Ātsu): This technique allows Emilia to instantly conjure ice made weapons which she can use and freely manipulate in close-quarters combat. Huma (ヒューマ, Hyūma): Emilia creates a shining water barrier that blocks other projectiles and sorts of magic. However, if the incoming magic is stronger than the shield, it will get through it and cause damage to the user. El Huma (エル・ヒューマ, Eru Hyūma): Emilia forms and shoots multitudes of ice spears from her hands which easily pierces through and crushes flesh that vanish a moment afterwards.
- #39Subaru
Keys: Subaru
Due in combination to his experiences with Return by Death and his trust in his friends and allies, Subaru is willing to put his faith in the people he knows and is more than willing to put himself in harm's way if it means there is a chance to overcome his and his allies' enemies. In fact, multiple times over, he has purposefully put himself through harsh experiences and came up with plans that revolved around him receiving great injuries, having allowed himself to effectively let one enemy break his arms and have his nearby comrades wait and put up with his pain until the right moment, or even convincing someone as gentle as Melty Pristis to stab him for the sake of his plan, as he believed Ferris, who they were going to the location of, would be able to recognize their plot and save him in the nick of time. That being said, this is also a trait that leads to him being scolded by those very people.
However, after arriving in Lugunica and experiencing multiple tragedies, Subaru has grown to fiercely detest the Witch Cult, to the point that in one of his failed loops, he had been so angry that his aggression led him to try to gain allies to fight them but failed in each attempt, even having been used for information while he was experiencing his severe tunnel vision and hatred. Of course, while he has been able to curb his hatred of them and act much calmer since then, his hatred for them is still intense. In particular, his hatred for and fear of the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, who was responsible for Rem's comatose state for over a year, was much more severe than the rest. Likewise, he is very liable to become hostile and extremely distrustful towards people that seem like his enemies, such as when he snapped at Eridna when she revealed herself to be "Echidna", who he already distrusted, and her behavior being so close to the original's only fed into that distrust, or his initial behavior toward Spica, who was born from one of the Gluttony siblings, Rui, despite her having no memories as Rui. Back in his original world, Subaru was the only son to two odd, but well-meaning parents, Kenichi and Naoko. From a young childhood age, Subaru idealized his dad in particular, a popular man in his community who was highly talented in whatever he did, a loving father who prioritized his family above everything else and had a boisterous personality that charmed anyone he met. Kenichi was everything he wanted to be and growing up around him had a huge influence on Subaru's life. Taking pride in being his son, Subaru worked to live up to the expectations that came with that in his mind. For a time, he achieved this, as Subaru found himself smarter, more physically able, and popular than his peers. When he received praise, Subaru would hear how it was expected of him being Kenichi's son, which made him feel special and entitled to a sense of superiority.
However, as the young boy's small world started to gradually expand upon entering middle school, Subaru would come face to face with limits of his own ability. Suddenly, he found people who were becoming smarter and faster than he was and, in general, being better at the things he used to be. He felt as if he was slowly losing his place and began to harbor a deep sense of shame at letting down his parents and fear of everyone leaving him for failures, doubt and self-loathing began to develop in his heart. But rather than prioritizing getting better at those things to combat his anxieties, Subaru instead placed more importance on doing daring and outrageous things to maintain his fragile dignity and keep himself the center of attention. However, the more reckless Subaru's actions became, the fewer people wanted to be around him. Yet Subaru continued to deceive himself and believe his own lies because as the son of his seemly indomitable father, he couldn't be seen as a failure. Eventually, one day, Subaru noticed he no longer had any friends, and, in his loneliness, Subaru realized he wasn't anyone special. Overall Power Subaru has at one point been declared among the weakest characters in all of Re:Zero. However, in spite of his overall lack of trained combat skills, Subaru has shown to be extremely crafty in the manner with which he utilizes his various Authorities, is a highly capable leader, and has used everything at his disposal in order to come out of the most dangerous of scuffles with as few casualties as possible. It is thanks to this that Subaru has established himself as a considerably dangerous opponent to have, and numerous people of considerable strength and standing have considered him to be a truly dangerous and considerable threat, one capable of potentially bringing the downfall of entire organizations that have existed for centuries or could be troublesome in the event of a national dispute, or an incredibly reliable ally whose insight and presence are deemed necessary in order to overcome the most hopeless of threats. Within a year and a half of arriving to the other world, Subaru had helped orchestrating the downfall of the Sin Archbishops of Sloth, Greed, and Gluttony, the Bowel Hunter Elsa Granhiert, the Witch Sphinx, and two of the Three Great Witchbeasts: the White Whale and the Great Rabbit. Furthermore, due to his influence, he has arranged a wide array of allies and friends in high places, and those connections are what exemplifies his "power" the most.
- #40Annerose Miload
Keys: Annerose Miload
Annerose Miload (アンネローゼ・ミロード) is the heir of House Miload, a branch family of House Mathers. Although she was introduced in Arc 4, she has yet to play a proper role in the main story. She became the heiress-in-waiting to House Miload after losing her parents following her birth. Roswaal brought her and her servant, Clind, into the Emilia Camp so the latter could oversee Subaru's training after the boy officially became Emilia's knight.
Contents Appearance Annerose has light blue eyes and long, dark indigo colored hair, which is braided around her head, prompting Subaru to call her a "Braid Loli" as he didn't know what her hairstyle was called. She wears an extravagant dress similar to Beatrice but the decorations are much plainer. Contrary to her young age, she has a hard look and a distinguished expression.
Personality As the heir to the Miload family, Annerose is mentally mature for her age, capable of speaking toe to toe with most adults and willingly going out of her way to travel long distances to scold people like Roswaal for their behavior. She is intelligent for her age as well, being quick to understand any situation she is dragged into, and she is decisive upon coming to those understandings. She is also considerably well adapted to handling nobles and has enough knowledge to meet with nobles in Roswaal's place, and willing to show off her intelligence and political knowledge to keep their mouths shut about her. She is also free of prejudice toward demi-humans, having lived in an environment where many of them work throughout her life, showing particular adoration toward Emilia despite her existence as a silver-haired half elf.
Despite her usual behavior, she shows a particularly harsher demeanor toward Roswaal. She scolds him for his actions, and she even approved of him being struck, telling as much to Garfiel upon being told by Roswaal that he had hit him, and she even claimed that she would be his ally in the event that he caused hassle for him. On the other hand, she can be particularly defensive of Emilia, to the point that she will act as a practical "love rival" when speaking with Subaru, not unwilling to pick fights without even a hint of her usual refined demeanor.
History The Oni Sisters of the Hidden Village On the day that Ram and Rem were targeted by Faust from the Witch Cult, Annerose's mother, Grace Miload, died shortly after giving birth to her. Later, Clind started serving her.
Emily-san's Maid Path Shortly after leaving Elior Forest, Emilia encounters and helps Annerose and Clind. Due to this intervention and a letter from Roswaal, Emilia is taken to the Miload mansion, where Annerose decides to take her in as a maid. During her introduction, her name is misheard as “Emily,” a nickname by which she becomes known in that environment. At the mansion, Frederica Baumann explains that it is a place that shelters discriminated demi-humans, allowing Emilia to remain there. However, Emilia misunderstands the situation as a test imposed by Roswaal to evaluate her effort and character, leading her to take her role as a maid very seriously. Despite her determination, her complete lack of experience with human life and household tasks causes her to fail repeatedly in her duties, and she is regarded as incompetent for the role. Even so, Emilia continues to persevere, convinced that overcoming these difficulties is part of her path toward a greater future.
- #41Clind
Keys: Clind
Clind (クリンド) is a house steward serving Annerose Miload. Despite joining the main cast after Arc 4, he does not play a supporting role until Arc 9. A longtime partner of the original Roswaal, Clind is a mysterious man who has long served the noble House Mathers. Following the Sanctuary Incident, he was brought into the Emilia Camp by Roswaal to oversee Subaru's training after he officially became Emilia's knight.
Contents 1/2
The video player is currently playing an ad. Appearance Clind appears to be a handsome young man around the age of twenty with a slender face and a tall, lean body. Along with that, he has eyebrow-length dark blue hair and gold eyes. Clind wears a well-starched black butler uniform with a frilly blue tie and sports a monocle on his left eye.[3]
Despite being a dragonkin, Clind has shed his past and conceals his draconic characteristics in order to blend in with humanity. When manifesting his true power, he has removed his monocle, which has no special qualities whatsoever, as a gesture to signify his shift in mentality, prompting his natural deep black horns to protrude from his head. He may also possess other characteristics associated with dragonkin, such as wings or a tail, though they have not been observed with him.
Personality Clind is well-mannered, highly considerate of others, is extremely skilled as a servant, and tends to add idioms to the end of his sentences. Despite his good traits, he sometimes jokes around a little while behaving in a polite manner. According to Frederica Baumann, he apparently has low self-esteem, which leads him to believe that his work as a butler is unworthy of praise, and likewise, despite having been responsible for teaching the other servants of House Mathers or House Miload, he is convinced that he has merely had the chance to convey what he knew many times due to his position rather than because he wanted to be a teacher, claiming it to be a noble role. However, by Petra Leyte's observation, he is fully aware of what he is capable of yet believes it is not something to be proud of, something which makes him come off as though he was modest, reserved, and had low self-esteem.
Clind is loyal to Roswaal, willing to follow him despite his faults. This being said, though he will not go against his orders, he does not necessarily approve of his actions, even going out of his way to ask for an explanation for why he would be willing to put his own servants in such a dangerous situation, even if it did result in someone getting their just punishment.[4][5] He is shown to worry for the man as well, even going out of his way to attempt to convince him to marry and wash away the face paint.
As the dragonkin of Volcanica, Clind has inherited many of its memories, experiences, and emotions. One of the traits that Clind inherited is Volcanica's envy and high opinion of those with unrealized potential. In particular, this makes Clind to be drawn towards the souls of those within children, which is filled to the point of bursting with potential due to their youths.[6] By his own claim, he is drawn to people who have pure and genuine souls, and that those who have such souls are also typically young in age.[7][8] However, he is also able to determine that Emilia was mentally young for her age and that Ryuzu's soul was much more mature than her appearance suggested. This inherited nature often leads to others, such as Frederica, misunderstanding him.[9] However, as there are secrets related to dragonkin that he prefers to be concealed from Frederica, he deliberately does not correct the misunderstandings of her and the people around her,[10] leading to his discontentment to be kept at a distance from certain individuals and thus not fully witnessing their potential.
- #42Meili Portroute
Keys: Meili Portroute
Meili Portroute (メィリィ・ポートルート) is a witchbeast tamer and a former "child" of Mother. She was first introduced in Arc 2 as the hidden main antagonist and one of the two secondary antagonists of Arc 4 alongside Elsa Granhiert. After the events of Arc 4, she was imprisoned, but she later joined the Emilia Camp, serving as a major role in Arc 6 and a supporting role in Arc 9 and Arc 10. Having been raised by witchbeasts after her seeming abandonment, she was taken in by Elsa, who practically raised her like a sister, and she became an assassin working for Mother. However, this occupation came to an end after her capture at Roswaal Manor, and, following the Pleiades Watchtower Expedition, she has earned her pardon and works with the Emilia Camp in earnest.
Contents Appearance Meili has refined yellow-green eyes that give off an air of mysticism and an equaled well-formed nose. Her long dark-blue hair is kept out of her face and tied into a triple-braid that flows down to her hips. A pink flower ornament with white outlining, which Elsa used to wear prior to meeting her, is framed to the left side of her head. During her undercover stay in the village, Meili's braid traipsed over her left shoulder so that it rested over her chest and her hair wasn't decorated with an ornament. She looks the same age as Petra Leyte. When not concealing her true nature, she gave off the foreboding impression of someone who would grow up to be a true demon.
The outfit Meili commonly wears is befitting of a girl with her moral character. Her ensemble consists of a long-sleeved black one-piece dress with a frilly white hem and white cone-shaped cuffs, brown tights with vertical-facing lighter brown stripes, a white cravat, and a pair of black boots that have cuffs with purple feathery trimming along their edge. Her dress has a black collar and reaches past her hips. Like Elsa, she wears a long purple-brown cloak that reached down to her ankles and had purple trimmings, although unlike Elsa's cloak, Meili's has a golden pendant serving as a strap and no hood. When she was undercover as a villager, Meili wore a short blue long-sleeved one-piece dress with a flap collar similar to a sailor's. On her feet she wore a pair of brown sandals, and apart from these and the dress, Meili wore no further clothing as a villager. Later, she replaces her hairpin with a small bow near the bottom of her braid.
For a short time in Arc 6, she wore a cloak to protect herself from the sands of the Augria Sand Dunes, and while she was being held in a room beneath Roswaal Manor, she wore a gray dress and socks with horizontal purple stripes on them.
Advertisement Personality When she was first introduced, Meili acted like she was shy and meek. She was not usually the center of attention, and she acted overly polite and timid, stuttering as she spoke. However, as this was part of her acting skills in play, this was not her true personality. Despite her young age, Meili is a mature girl who became privy to the ugly side of humanity at an early age. Meili failed to display any semblance of the childish innocence usually exhibited by kids her age. She was perfectly willing to kill people, regardless of whether they were innocent or children like herself. She also had a penchant for deception, such as when she mimicked the behavior of a regular child. According to Natsuki Subaru, she had grown up without having learned the difference between right and wrong. Meili has shown to find witchbeasts to be cute and is very fond of them. If possible, she likes to avoid letting them die when she can, and she will prevent her allies from killing them in her presence unless absolutely necessary. At one point, she had become close with a pet Guiltylowe, and later, she had become attached to Shaula, referring to her with "naked onee-san" and was typically seen hanging over her shoulder. She also has great instincts when it comes to a person's strength or their level of danger; when faced with the Council of Wise Men, particularly Miklotov McMahon, she could sense something strange from his gaze, and after meeting Reinhard van Astrea, whose strength was terrifying to her, she started to panic, barely containing her feeling to attack and attempt to flee from the scene. She also finds it annoying when people around her provide her unnecessary assistance or treat her like a child, such as when Elsa did both after the events of Arc 2. Despite this side of her, she still at times acts like the young girl that she is, finding the sewn-together dolls that Subaru made for cute and playing with them while she lived in Roswaal Manor. She also has a habit of stretching out the end of her sentences. She has shown herself to be rather friendly and familiar toward others, even toward her targets.
At some point after her birth, when she was seemingly abandoned, she was a feral child who was unable to talk. She was raised by witchbeasts, protected by them, and taught how to survive through them. Because of this, when Elsa first appeared in front of her and killed all of her witchbeasts, she was very hostile and animalistic, even biting at her despite knowing that she would not be able to win against her.
- #43Patrasche
Keys: Patrasche
Patrasche (パトラッシュ) is Subaru's earth dragon that he officially received from Crusch Karsten for his efforts in the Subjugation of the White Whale. She played a supporting role in Arc 3, Arc 4, and Arc 6, and minor roles in Arc 8 and Arc 9.
Contents Appearance Patrasche is a black earth dragon of the Diana species.
Personality Despite being of a species known for being feisty and rather proud, Patrasche is extremely loyal to Subaru, as she is willing to put her life on the line to serve him, such as when she sacrificed herself to save Subaru from Satella's shadows at the Pleiades Watchtower and from an enraged Garfiel Tinzel at the Sanctuary. She is also willing to show her protectiveness to Subaru’s allies, as seen when she protected Rem from Lye Batenkaitos, taking numerous injuries in the process, and she even shows a certain type of friendship with the similarly proud Ram, with the oni going so far as to say that she is too good for Subaru.
In Arc 8, she has also shown a rather commanding presence among other earth dragons. When the undead Valgren appeared over the coupled dragon carriages, as the other earth dragons trembled in fear and were tempted to scatter, Patrasche scolded them with her own roar and kept them in check, not showing even the slightest hint of fear despite the Dragon’s incredible presence.[2]
Advertisement History While the majority of Patrasche’s history is unknown, Volcanica seems to recognize her name, despite not having been given it until Subaru’s arrival into the world. At some point, Patrasche found herself in the care of Crusch Karsten and her estate.
Abilities Divine Protection (加護 Kago): As an earth dragon, Patrasche has the Divine Protection of Wind Evasion (風避けの加護 Kazeyoke no Kago), which enables her to be unaffected by the wind and not encounter any wind resistance while running. The effect also applies to any dragon carriage that she pulls. After activation, there is a cooldown before she can use it again.
- #44Frufoo
Keys: Frufoo
Appearance Frufoo is an earth dragon of thickset complexion. Her skin is blue with a white underside. She has a crest with yellow edges.
Personality Frufoo has a sarcastic and straightforward attitude. She is docile towards humans, especially Otto, whom she, despite often questioning and scolding, cares for and obeys.
History Frufoo was raised in the Suwen household, located in Otto's hometown, Picoutatte. She has known Otto since he was a child, and the two used to have conversations via Otto's Divine Protection. When Otto was banished from Picoutatte, he took Frufoo with him. They have been traveling together since.
Advertisement Otto's Peddling Record of Joy and Sorrow At one point, having made a successful business venture in the town of Guineb, as he and Frufoo prepared to leave, he was invited by the town's mayor, Colin Lavril, to his residence. There, he was asked how he crossed the mountains, to which Otto refused to discuss his secret. Colin then introduced Otto to his son, Aheem, and stated that his fiancée, Marone Lisbon, had been kidnapped, and because of that, he wanted to know how to cross the mountains. Though Otto still refused to give up his secrets, he proposed to relay a rescue service for the girl. Afterward, he was guided by his son, but along the way, Aheem led Otto into a trap, which resulted in Otto being imprisoned by slave traders.
In a cell, he met a girl who called him Number Two and introduced herself as Marone. According to her, Aheem was not her fiancée. He had deceived her and given her to the slave traders. After a while, some of the slave traders appeared, and when he asked where Frufoo was, they claimed that she worked for them. At some point after this while still in the cell, he told Marone that he had the "Divine Protection of Guidance" and made an agreement with her. Afterward, when they were put on his dragon carriage, he was told to reveal his path through the mountains. The deal with Aheem was that he would provide the traders women in exchange for leaving Guineb alone. With Frufoo taking the carriage, Otto directed the traders where there was a supposed path that they could use. Then, after calling out to Marone as part of their agreement, they held on tight as Frufoo was signaled to crash the carriage.
Otto and Marone had their injuries treated in a hospital in a nearby town, where he revealed that Guineb's mayor and son were likely to be investigated for the incident and Aheem likely arrested. Upon asking if she would return to Guineb, Marone refused. When Marone asked for his name, he said she could keep calling him Number Two, and he gave her his own savings, enough for her to start a new life anywhere she wanted, lying to her by saying it was a reward for taking down the slave traders. Then, Otto took off, Frufoo scolding him for lying but believing it was fine, and she looked forward to seeing his dream come true.
Abilities Divine Protection (加護 Kago): Frufoo has the Divine Protection of Wind Evasion (風避けの加護 Kazeyoke no Kago), which enables her to be unaffected by the wind and not encounter any wind resistance while running. The effect also applies to a dragon carriage that she pulls. After activation, there is a cooldown before she can use it again.
- #45Priscilla Barielle
Keys: Priscilla Barielle
Priscilla showed confidence in her actions since she typically always came out on top. She was also not afraid to fight since she knew how to fight and defend herself, and she was not intimidated when she had to face Sirius, when she encountered zombies in her territory, or when she went to search for the thieves within her domain. Even in the face of one who wanted revenge on her, she showed no fear as she looked them in the eyes, and despite her opponent's goals to inflict despair on her, she stood proudly, entirely unaffected by that enemy's efforts. Though she was well known for being a woman who over the years ended up being a widow, Priscilla did not seem to mind at all. She considered her last husband, Leip, to be an old pervert and did not care for her marriage with him. She also displayed a seeming lack of care for the predicaments of the people around her. Despite seeming lack of care for people, however, Priscilla is able to understand other people after meeting them for a mere few moments. With extended conversations with other people, she can even glean an insight into the truth of their personalities and conflicts, even when the words conveyed were few. She also imitates her brother's habit when she enters contemplation, and she admires his attitude as well upon weighing his responsibilities, though she believes that such actions are excessive, that there were some that one could meet only by closing their eyes.[10]
True to her self-centered demeanor, she had no need to deceive others, nor did she like to.[11] She respected everyone's freedoms, and though she claimed that everything would become hers should she become the country's monarch, she had no intentions of hoarding everything nearby her, as she believed doing so would be akin to locking a bird in a cage and depriving it of the beauty of flight and freedom. She loved when people attempted to reach for an objective outside of their capacities, and whether the person succeeds or fails in reaching their goal, she loved it regardless.[12][13] Despite her apparent lack of love for others, she actually does love other people, as evidenced through her Soul Marriage Technique, which affects everyone she loves and those who harbor emotions for her, which reflected her love through the gifts her husbands gave her; her love seemed to encompass all of life as well,[14] as her Soul Marriage Technique not only affected those in a city she was in at one point, but also the people in an entirely different city that was more than a day away, effectively both strengthening and protecting them all.[15] Priscilla has shown to be willing to sacrifice herself for others as well, which she did when she once acted to remove poison directly from Arakiya by ingesting said poison herself and dividing the effect, when she believed that her mother and Arakiya were both in danger at the start of the Great Disaster, and, not fearing death, she even later willingly burned away her body and ended her life to fight alongside her allies. She was also not shy of complimenting other people for their accomplishments, even if others were unable to see exactly what those accomplishments were, and such words of acknowledgement and gratitude were some of the very last words she spoke.[16] Overall Power Priscilla was an accomplished fighter whose skills are considered equal to or superior to Crusch Karsten at one point. Her skill with the blade allowed her to easily repel most enemies, and combined with her signature Soul Marriage Technique, she was an incredibly difficult person to bring down, having even been capable of fighting and defeating the likes of the Sin Archbishop of Wrath, the Second of the Nine Divine Generals, and even the Witch Sphinx.
Advertisement Divine Protection Divine Protection of the Sun (日輪の加護, Nichirin no Kago): Priscilla's Divine Protection made her stronger during the day and increases the effects of buffs.[25]
Techniques Soul Marriage Technique (魂婚術, Konkon-jutsu): Soul Marriage is a long-lost secret technique of the old world that has been forgotten by most people. By dividing her own Od and bestowing it onto someone of her choosing, Priscilla imbued them with power more or less reflective of her own, and she greatly boosted their healing capabilities to the point someone acting under her Soul Marriage can receive multiple fatal wounds and be healed completely in a few short moments. However, in order for Soul Marriage to work, Priscilla must have not only loved the receiver of this ability, but she must have also be loved by that person in return. If this condition isn't met, Soul Marriage will not work. During the Flying Dragon Cataclysm in Guaral, Priscilla used this ability to protect Schult from being harmed by ensuring that he'd be healed from against any attack towards him. By kissing Liliana in Priestella, Priscilla was able to place her under the effects of Soul Marriage, freeing her from Sirius's Soulwashing. Furthermore, due to her love seeming to encompass life, the distance of her reach seems to be eliminated, as it managed to affect every living person in Lupugana and Garkla, which was more than a day away, simultaneously during the Conquest of the Undead Capital.[15] The proof of being under that protection is in the painless fire that burns from their eyes.[26] She can use this ability on herself, with her commenting that items like jewelry were bestowed to her by her past husbands and could be used to defend herself. Soul Marriage could also be used to block a lethal attack on the user by sacrificing one of the recipients of the user's Od, which typically results in her beloved articles receiving damage meant for her and being destroyed.
- #46Al
Keys: Al · Secondary: Aldebaran
Despite his easygoing attitude, Al has a dark air to him, as noted by Rem. Beneath his cheerful facade, he is shown to be someone who is full of fear and quick to feel anger. He is often secretive and has shown to be very suspicious, which had at one point even been pointed out to him by the Sin Archbishop of Lust.[8][9] At times, he has shown open hostility at different things, such as when he mistook Rem for Ram, and afterward, felt openly disgusted. Likewise, he seemed to loathe his own name, angrily replying to Priscilla at one point to not call him by it. He also has shown to bring death to the people who harm to the people he loves, and in combat, Al is excessively calculative and patient, at times showing excessive brutality towards his opponent, coming up with various plans, counting the number of times he gives his life, and at times, expressing frustration with his opponents. Despite all of this, Al does not want to see people die if he can help it, which Rom even noticed, only taking drastic actions either when he is forced to or when he knows that someone is nearby that can prevent the disaster he would bring. In order to employ his Authority, rather than overcoming the fear of death, Al has grown numb to it. His numbness to death is the reason behind his strength and how he is able to withstand dying an untold number of times.[10] However, he is heavily reliant on his Authority to the point that, should he lose it, he will cower in fear, show no enthusiasm to be involved in the events around him, and will retreat into himself, hiding from danger. In fact, if he should lose access to his Authority, he will also become racked with indecision and pressure and begin questioning everything he does, as he had never come to a decision or made a conclusion without it.[11]
Once, Al seemed to take a form of pride, though not arrogance, from being an apparently undefeatable person created by Echidna, and he was intent on completing the task entrusted to him. However, after failing at his original task, his spirit was entirely shattered, and his apparent lack of purpose struck him hard. After appearing on Ginunhive and learning that the Witches were erased from history, he became rather agitated and violent. However, after spending a decade on Ginunhive, he began to forget Echidna, making him question whether the memories that he fostered were even real, and he contemplated suicide numerous times. However, he eventually obtained the courage he needed to keep living and prove their existences after he saved Arakiya and was given courage by a speech held by a young Priscilla. It is unknown if it is because of his last talk with Echidna, the awareness of how his Authority works, or his broken spirit, but Al has a habit of saying "Your stars were bad" to any opponent who faces him. According to Yae Tenzen's observations, he does not say this in a prideful or condescending way, nor does he blame the stars whenever things do not go his way. Instead, he says it with pity and guilt, as if saying that the stars were bad for his opponent for leading them to someone who can completely crush their spirit and their dreams.
Al has shown to have rather intense or surprising attitudes towards others that seem to be the crux of his actions and personality. He has complicated feelings for his teacher and the person who gave him his task, Echidna, harboring reservations about how incompatible they were with each other despite being unable to describe their relationship as one of like or dislike.[12] However, despite this, he displayed great attachment to her teaching and words, to the point that he clung to them during his time in Ginunhive, and it later enraged him to learn that the current version of the Witch of Greed is very different from the woman he once knew. In the case of Satella, he couldn't bring himself to land a hit against even her illusion, and upon releasing her upon the world in Arc 9, he seemed to be depressed as he claimed that she wouldn't even look at him. In the case of Rem, after having mixed her up with her sister, Al showed an incredible amount of hostility and disgust. In Emilia's case, she even seemed to pick up on a hint of loneliness coming from him. On the other hand, after becoming Priscilla's knight, despite feeling more like her caretaker, she was his primary pillar of support who he showed great love for. It was because of her that he believed he could abandon the task given to him by his teacher, and he was so fervently loyal and protective of her that, despite his hatred of fate, he was willing to abide by it in order to protect her.[13] Yet when he lost Priscilla at the end of the Great Disaster, he reverted back to how he was before he met her, and he began referring to himself as Aldebaran again.
- #47Schult Barielle
Keys: Schult Barielle
Schult Barielle (シュルト・バーリエル) is a former member of the Priscilla Camp. He was a loyal and close attendant to Priscilla Barielle. Although he has a minor role in the story as a whole, he plays a lesser supporting role in Arc 7. An orphan from a farming village, after he caught her eye, Priscilla decided to make him her servant, giving him the name Schult and making him her closest attendant besides Aldebaran. Following the Priscilla Camp's journey to Vollachia, it was discovered that Priscilla had arranged to officially adopt him before they left, leaving him as the successor to the Barielle family.[2]
Contents Appearance Schult is a young boy with big red glistering eyes and medium length fluffy and curly, peach-pink hair. He has a thin body which resembles a girl's and wears a butler's outfit over his still-developing body. The butler's attire primarily consists of a light purple long sleeved jacket with six gold buttons and shorts which are of the exact same color as the jacket. The cuffs and the collar have a pink accent with white stripes creating a caro pattern. Accompanying his elegant yet child-like attire, he can be seen sporting a large red ribbon. Perhaps one of the most unique assets of his attire are his white knee-high socks which give his appearance a bit of an out-of-fashion spin. His appearance is said to somehow give off an immoral feeling. Personality As his body is still developing, Schult's voice is high-pitched, like that of a child, making him come off as a bit younger than he actually is. Though his personality has not much seen in the story, as he normally stays quiet for most of his screen-time, he's shown to harbor deep respect for both Al and Priscilla, being prepared to even subject himself to danger just so he'd be able to finish the task given to him. Just like Al, he also deeply cares about Priscilla's well-being as shown when he was the only one protesting against the Princess' decision to personally check the zombie outbreak in one of the villages under her domain.
Schult doesn’t like it when people around him get hurt, and he will jump in the way of dangerous enemies who very well could kill him in order to prevent them from doing his comrades harm. He has also displayed a lack of discrimination towards those of other races, even going so far as to request someone like Emilia for help when necessary and without hesitation.
After Priscilla’s passing, though Schult was saddened, his resolve was strengthened dramatically, and he decided to live as someone Priscilla would be proud of.
History Schult was a small, thin orphan without a name who grew up in a small farming village within the Barielle Domain. Despite being impoverished and starved, he caught Priscilla's eye, and she decided to take him in as a servant. After taking him in, she gave him the name Schult.
Priscilla's Cheers for Me, Entertainment Part One day, Leip Barielle, Priscilla's then-husband, organized a tournament to decide who Priscilla's knight would be. She quickly got bored with the fighting while viewing the tournament, causing her to ask Schult for his thoughts. Schult decided to recommend Al, as he believed that the man showed care for Priscilla, unlike the other combatants. Priscilla thought Al was entertaining enough and that his fighting style was interesting, and she consequently selected him as her “clown”. This infuriated Leip, as he had tried to fix the tournament so that a winner would be under his control.
The Day I Gave Up on Being a Following Star A few days later, Leip attempted to bring Al and Schult under his control, but he was refused when he revealed his intentions to make Priscilla into a puppet. Al clashed with Leip by using his ability, which resulted in the baron being incapacitated. In due time, Leip passed away before the commencement of the Royal Selection, leading Priscilla to take over as the governing lord of the Barielle Domain. Under her rule, the land, which was previously ravaged by severe poverty, quickly got back on its feet, and its people started to live much happier and better lives all thanks to Priscilla's leadership of the territory.
- #48Heinkel Astrea
Keys: Heinkel Astrea
Heinkel Astrea (ハインケル・アストレア) is the current Patriarch of House Astrea and the Deputy Commander of the Royal Guard. He plays a supporting role in Arc 7, Arc 8, and Arc 10, and an antagonistic role in Arc 5 and Arc 9. Once a gentle and kind man, after his wife fell into a coma, he turned into an alcoholic, causing him to neglect his son and abuse his power as Deputy Commander. Sometime prior to Arc 5, he joined the Priscilla Camp in hopes that, if their camp won the Royal Selection, he could gain access to the Dragon's Blood and save his wife. Following the disbandment of the Priscilla Camp, he became the knight of Filore and joined her camp.
Contents Appearance Heinkel is a muscular man with short red hair, blue eyes and a stubble beard. He wears a black tabard with brown shoulder plates and chest armor, along with a dark cape, brown pants, gloves and black boots.
Personality Heinkel is a slovenly, arrogant and brash man who outwardly has no care for what others think about him and is not ashamed to throw around his position to intimidate others for petty reasons. He is also willing to stoop low and resort to kidnapping if it will give him an advantage. Heinkel apparently uses his son as a tool to safeguard his rank in the Royal Guard and has no problems making him act as a shield in times of danger at even the expense of others. However, underneath Heinkel's malicious exterior and his alcohol addiction lies a deeply depressed man. His eyes, dull and bereft of spirit, grew decadent over a period of many years. He loathes both his weakness and his own personality.
With his wife’s predicament, Heinkel is willing to do whatever he can to restore her to normal, making him somewhat of an opportunist. This includes wiping out a bandit camp for a supposed magical healing device, jumping on the chance to join the Priscilla Camp to gain access to the Dragon’s blood stored in the castle, and even begging to join the Emilia Camp shortly after Priscilla’s demise. Likewise, he is even willing to make himself an enemy of the world in order to accomplish this goal. That said, he is also willing to join said camps because of his son and father, as his presence puts both of them in an uncomfortable position.
Despite his rough attitude, he does not find swinging his sword enjoyable, seeing it as a shackle.[4] He has shown to be uncomfortable with taking other people's lives or seeing them taken in front of him, even if it is deemed necessary. When Al stated that there was no need to kill anyone during his scheme, Heinkel showed visible relief. Likewise, it has been noted by several people that despite his bitterness, he does consider the consequences of his actions, and according to Volcanica, whose mind had been overwritten by Al, Heinkel is actually a decent person, as evidenced in how he always considers fear, and would never be like the many demented people that he has met. Despite this, he himself does not believe so, and he believes that his actions following Priscilla's demise prove as such. He also becomes extremely hostile and defensive when someone pokes into the issues surrounding Heinkel and his family's predicament, and this hostility can become so great that Al was unable to prevent him from killing Felt several times for it.
In the past, Heinkel was not always a bitter, resentful man. He still deeply cares about his wife Louanna and became an alcoholic after she was inflicted with a condition that little is known about and the murder of her doctor. When his mother, Theresia van Astrea, was seemingly slain by the White Whale, he was the only person to stand by his son, while everyone else blamed the latter for the Sword Saint's death. He also seems to harbor great respect for the Lugunican Royal Family, and as such, despite being her enemy, when he was put under the impression that Felt was the missing princess Filore, he started to treat her with respect and apologize to her for it. Heinkel was born to his father, Wilhelm van Astrea, and to his mother, Theresia van Astrea. In his younger days, he was a much more earnest and kind man who seemed to have aspirations of becoming the next Sword Saint like his mother and worked quite hard. He fell in love with a woman named Louanna at first sight and sometime later the two had an arranged marriage. They had a son, Reinhard Astrea. However, things would soon begin to go awry for the Astreas, first with Louanna suddenly falling into deep sleep two years after Reinhard's birth and left in an inanimate state without any cure for such condition. He began to take up drinking alcohol during this time but still showed care for his other family members.
- #49Julius Juukulius
Keys: Julius Juukulius
Julius Juukulius (ユリウス・ユークリウス) is Anastasia Hoshin's knight and a member of the Royal Guard. He played major roles in both Arc 3 and Arc 6 and supporting roles in Arc 5 and Arc 8. Julius was also one of the main protagonists of The Travelogue of the Finest, as well as a supporting character in The Dream the Lion King Saw. Though born into the life of a commoner, he was adopted into House Juukulius by his uncle following his parents’ deaths, where he would eventually become the next in line to take over the house. Appearance Julius is a tall young man of a well-built muscular stature with yellow eyes and gleaming light purple hair that is arranged neatly with a strand hanging down his face. He almost exclusively wears the formal Royal Guard uniform. When he fought with Subaru, he took off his Royal Guard's coat and wore a black suit with blue borders.
In the Water Plumage Inn in Arc 5, he wore a yukata, and for a short period later, he wore a cloak that protected him from the sands of the Augria Sand Dunes. After his fight with Reid Astrea in Arc 6, Julius received a cut directly under his left eye. Due to the nature of the cut, the scar is permanent.
During the events of Arc 8, Julius wore Kararagian fashioned clothing: a kimono with a black nagagi and white hakama, a haori the same shade of purple as his hair, a red scarf, his sword at his waist, and a pair of sandals.
Personality As a member of Lugunica's nobility, Julius acts in a proper fashion, always having an air of nobility and conviction. He is also considerate and doesn't forget to show care toward others. He also shows a strict side, giving out accurate assessments of others whether they're good or bad, which is a result of his upbringing as an elite, whilst currently, he believes that he and others can do better than they currently are. Julius also appears to be somewhat of a history buff, and he tends to display hints of excitement when a situation involves people who have left their mark on history.[5] In fact, a part of him felt excited by the prospect of confronting such people during the Great Disaster, albeit he tempered his expectations after having already met Reid Astrea prior, who both lived up to and betrayed the image he had of the first Sword Saint.[6]
Despite his demeanor, which clashes with Subaru's modernized world view, Julius tends to worry about others, even those who do not like him. When Subaru lashed out during the Royal Selection Ceremony, despite agreeing with Subaru, because he feared that Subaru would be executed for his remarks by the Royal Army, Julius made an example of him in order to save his life and to quell the army's anger, while resulted in a one-sided and publicly humiliating beating and his own temporary house arrest. Ferris later points out that despite these actions, he held out hope in the young man, even when later they decided they would never be friends. Of course, despite this, Julius still wishes to befriend people such as Subaru, and despite early rocky relationships, he is more than willing to listen to their accounts of important matters, such as believing Subaru on everything he had to say regarding the Witch Cult before the Subjugation of Sloth.
However, as pointed out by Reid Astrea, beneath his noble demeanor, Julius is actually a very insecure person who desperately holds on to his bonds with others. This mindset seems to be the result of his parents' deaths, causing him to seek attention to fill the void in his heart. Though not nearly on the same level as Reinhard or Marcos Gildark, Julius is among the strongest individuals of the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica. At one point, he was stated to be skilled and powerful enough to be able to reach the title of a Second-Class General in the Imperial Army of the Vollachia Empire, a position reserved for individuals who are either unparalleled tacticians, have distinguished themselves with excellent leadership capabilities, or stand out from the rest in terms of overall strength and skill in combat, but are not walking monsters capable of single-handedly turning the tide of a major battle. Though almost completely outmatched in both instances, Julius displayed enough strength to survive battles with legends of such strength as the Blue Lightning and the first Sword Saint and even withstand their onslaught of attacks for a short time. After the contract with his spirits was renewed, his strength was enhanced significantly further to the point that he was able to easily defeat the undead Sphinx with little resistance. He continues to improve his skill and has even trained with the strongest man in Kararagi, Halibel, following the Great Disaster, and Halibel has acknowledged his skill as being one of the most powerful people in the Kingdom.
- #50Joshua Juukulius
Keys: Joshua Juukulius
Joshua Juukulius (ヨシュア・ユークリウス) is Julius Juukulius's cousin and adoptive younger brother, and he is a member of the Anastasia Camp. He played a lesser supporting role in Arc 5. A frail and sickly boy in his youth, Joshua was the only son of House Juukulius's family head. After meeting Julius, despite his jealousy of his abilities, he became a fervent admirer of his and followed him even in the Royal Selection. However, just before the Battle for Priestella, Joshua unluckily stumbled across the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, who ate his name and memories, putting him in a vegetative-like state. Currently, Joshua is yet to wake up.
Contents Appearance Joshua is an elegant and handsome young man with a clear and slender face and long, light purple hair that he regularly ties into a tail, leaving it to elegantly fall down his shoulders. He has bright and sparkling, yellow slant up eyes that give off a sharp look which left a pretty bad first impression on Subaru. His black clothes are well tailored and perfectly fit his slender physique; paired with his monocle, they give off a strict and scholarly impression, and one can easily figure out his social standing. He's described to give off an impression of a boy who would best fit into a quiet room, immersed in literature - which coincidentally was how he spent most of his childhood. Despite that, Joshua is extremely well mannered, and his posture is elegant and befitting of a noble.
Personality Unlike his brother Julius, Joshua does not have the same composed personality, as shown when he gets flustered with the antics of the Emilia Camp members and can be quick to fear others based off of rumors. Despite this, he has a serious yet amiable personality, and Natsuki Subaru considers him easier to get along with than Julius. He respects his brother to the utmost degree and cannot stop when he starts talking about him, and likewise, he has a great respect for spirits and the people who are able to contract with them, which he displayed upon meeting Subaru and Beatrice. He has also developed a passion for art and painting.
Even with his utmost calm and collected personality, he was previously subtly racist towards demi-humans, with Julius describing that Joshua had a narrowed view towards the world. Since then, he has shed his prejudice, and he has shown not to be fazed when dealing with either members of the Anastasia Camp, which is comprised of many demi-humans, or even Emilia, someone who was hated and feared for being a silver-haired half elf who bore a resemblance to the Witch of Envy, though in the case of the latter, he had to be convinced that his lingering fear was baseless.
Despite all this, due to his frail condition, Joshua was jealous of his brother, even bordering on a slight hatred, which Roy Alphard stated using Joshua's memories. Joshua was born sickly, and he would regularly have coughing fits and would be forced to be bedridden. Because of this, he was physically very weak and quickly ran out of stamina. As such, unable to train himself or learn combat skills, he spent his childhood buried in books. One day, Alviero explained the situation to his son regarding the adoption of his cousin, Julius, into the family, asking him if he had any questions about it since it would affect his life. After claiming that he had no questions, he had Julius introduce himself. When Julius introduced himself, he offered a handshake which led to him mistakenly giving an introduction meant for a lady and causing Alviero to laugh. However, Joshua started to cry, causing Julius, Alviero, and the servants of the house to panic.
The next morning, Julius had started practicing swordsmanship with Alviero, which Joshua had awoken to hear. It did not take long for Julius to be disarmed and lose to Alviero, causing him great frustration, which Alviero said to treasure and recalled how his own frustration and sense of loss to swing the sword had faded away at some point. With morning practice over, Julius noticed Joshua and asked if he slept well. Not long after, Julius visited Joshua in his room and explained that he hadn't been taught about being a knight before and that he wished he had been more serious. When asked what he did when he lived with his parents, Julius told him that he would either help them or play with his friends, and he wasn't aware of being a member of House Juukulius until Alviero came to adopt him. Joshua recalled that Julius's parents died in a flash flood while saving people, and he called them great people. However, Julius asked if it was weird that he just wanted his parents to be alive and worried about whether it was fine to do as Alviero said. After thinking about it, Joshua said he needed to become a hero to become worthy of his parents. Desperate, he asked what a hero was, and Joshua looked to a bookshelf where his favorite story was, which would be Julius's ideal. From that point forward, they met regularly in Joshua's room to read those epics.
