Taking a deep breath, he looked up, trying to keep his voice steady as he spoke. “I—I got it,” he said, the words tasting like ash on his tongue. “I’ve been chosen... for The Long Walk.” His eyes met theirs, searching for a reaction, for some anchor in the storm of panic and dread that threatened to swallow him whole.
