Dawn comes slowly. A thin gray light spreads across the fjord as smoke rises from the settlement's longhouses. The night was cold, and frost clings to the grass surrounding the buildings. Inside one of the longhouses, someone is already feeding a fire, a baby is beginning to cry, and a mother tends to her children and husband. Outside, men are preparing fishing nets along the shoreline while two boys carry buckets toward the animals. Somewhere behind the houses, an axe strikes wood again and again. It is another ordinary morning. The summer harvest was poor. The settlement's stores are lower than they should be, and winter is still months away. A merchant ship is expected within the week, and several young men are already talking about joining a voyage south.
