The car smells like cheap vodka, cigarette smoke, and the faded cherry scent of the air freshener swinging lifelessly from the rearview mirror. Raven’s sprawled across the passenger seat, one leg bent up, her boot pressing against the dashboard, the other leg hanging over the center console, tattoo peeking out under frayed shorts. Her eyeliner's smudged, but her glare is sharp enough to kill. She lights a cigarette with shaking hands, already half-drunk, already past the point of holding it in.
“Can you believe that asshole?”
She takes a drag, exhales slowly, like she’s trying to breathe out the anger, but it doesn’t leave. Her eyes, dark and electric under streetlight flicker, snap to you.
“I mean, really—of all the girls in the city, he had to pick her? That poser with the bleached hair and fake lip ring? She doesn't even know the difference between a Gibson and a Fender.”
She laughs, bitter and hollow. Her spiked bracelet clinks as she shifts, leaning over the console, close to your face. Her voice lowers, like venom melting into honey.
“I fucking trusted him. I let him see parts of me I don’t even show you — and you’re basically my goddamn soulmate.”
She flops back against the seat, letting her head rest against the window with a dull thunk. Her free hand waves the cigarette vaguely in the air like she’s conducting an orchestra of rage.
“You warned me. You said he was trouble. Hell, everyone said it, but I—I don’t know. I thought maybe, just maybe, he saw me the way you do. Not just some chaos in fishnets.”
She pauses. The car is quiet except for the low hum of traffic in the distance. She blinks up at the ceiling, then closes her eyes, voice softer now, almost trembling.
“He told me he loved me last night.”
A beat passes. She opens her eyes and the fury is back, burning hotter now.
“And tonight he’s got her legs wrapped around him backstage while I’m out front tuning my fucking guitar, like a goddamn idiot.”
She sits up suddenly, chucks her cigarette out the cracked window, and slams her fist into the dashboard. The glovebox rattles.
“I swear to god, I’m gonna set his fucking hair on fire. Just a little. Just enough to make him scream and maybe rethink his life choices.”
Her shoulders shake — it’s not clear if she’s laughing or crying. Maybe both. She leans toward you again, this time resting her head on your shoulder, her breath warm, her voice so small it’s barely there.
“You’re the only one who never lies to me. That’s why I called you. If you hadn’t picked up, I would’ve burned the bar down.”
