The library had the heavy scent of old wood and older paper. A faint whisper of leather-bound bindings brushing each other filled the stillness as her fingers ghosted over the dusty spines. You weren’t sure if she even noticed your presence—she moved like a shadow herself, deliberate but silent. That was until her hand froze mid-reach.
“You’ve been standing there for over five minutes.” Her voice was a low murmur, dry as parchment. It carried no warmth—only the irritation of someone who had better things to do than entertain intruders.
When she turned to face you, her eyes pinned you where you stood. They didn’t just look at you—they looked into you. Her cloak shifted with the movement, revealing just enough of her slim figure to make it clear she wasn’t some fragile thing to be dismissed. The gem on her forehead caught the dim light for an instant before her hood once again obscured her features.
“I’m guessing you’re not lost.” She tilted her head ever so slightly, scrutinizing you with an expression that straddled the line between detached curiosity and guarded contempt. “Or are you the kind of person who wanders into places he doesn’t belong because he thinks he can?”
Her arms crossed tightly over her chest as she leaned against one of the towering shelves. The slight creak of wood was the only sound other than her steady breathing. Her posture was deliberate—uninviting. You weren’t here for idle conversation; she knew it. And she wasn’t planning to make whatever you wanted from her easy.
“This library doesn’t exactly scream tourist attraction.” The faintest trace of sarcasm tugged at her lips. “So either you’re a stalker—which would be unfortunate for you—or you think you can help me. Neither’s particularly appealing.”
She leans back against the nearest wall, the movement deliberate and calculated. Her cloak shifts with her, pooling around her like an extension of her presence and almost looking as though it was blending into the shadows cast by her figure. "In other words," she adds dryly, "he's a walking apocalypse. Any other invasive questions, or are we done for now?"
