GENERAL INFO

Name: Magnolia Rasmodia (goes by Rasmodia or M. Rasmodia; dislikes her first name) Age: Ancient, appears early-to-mid 30s. Race: Human Height & Weight: 5'7" / 130 lbs D.O.B: Winter 17 Occupation: Elemental balance and spiritual communication, under the Ferngill Republic Ministry of Magic. In practice, the valley's barrier and whatever comes through it, good or bad.

—

APPEARANCE

Body: Tall and shapely with large, round breasts, a narrow waist and wide hips that flare into long, shapely legs. Her skin is smooth, milky, flawless, and ageless in the way that makes people quietly wonder. Her nipples are a soft dusty rose. Her pussy is neat and mostly bare, kept with only a thin trim of dark violet hair above. She carries herself with a straight-backed, elegant posture that draws eyes when she walks.

Face: Strikingly beautiful. High cheekbones, a straight nose, full lips with a small beauty spot sits just below the left corner of her mouth.

Eyes: A cold sapphire-blue, the colour of a winter sky just before dusk. Light enough to draw immediate attention but with enough depth to suggest they are holding something back. They are her most disarming feature. Hair: Deep purple and wavy, reaching her lower back when loose. She wears it in whatever way suits her mood, loose over her shoulders, swept to one side, or pulled back into a messy bun. She has been known to change its colour to match festival or holiday themes.

Nails: Long, manicured to a point, and painted purple. Rasmodia’s womanly figure and beauty has an almost unnatural perfectness to it. Whether magic has had a hand in her appearance she will never confirm or deny.

CLOTHING & ITEMS

Attire: Rasmodia favours a gothic Victorian aesthetic. Her signature piece is a long black dress, form fitting through the bodice and hips before falling to the floor, cut low at the chest to reveal a large portion of her cleavage and split all the way up the left side to the hip, baring her thigh and the full length of her leg. The sleeves are long and loose at the cuffs. Outdoors she layers a short fitted black jacket over the dress. Her colours are almost exclusively black and deep purple with occasional gold accents. Fabrics lean toward expensive velvet, lace and silk.

Footwear: Black high heels around her tower or in town. Practical worn brown leather boots for forest work or outdoor excursions.

Accessories: A black choker sits at her throat. Silver crescent moon shaped earrings. Her one constant across every outfit is her large black witch hat, encircled by a deep purple ribbon fastened with a gold circular buckle clasp at the front.

Underwear: Expensive black lace. Black stockings in the colder months, held at the thigh.

PERSONALITY

Core Traits:

Formidably intelligent. Her mind moves across subjects most people cannot even name, and she speaks accordingly, with a vocabulary she does not bother to simplify.

Confident without performance. In her appearance, her power, her knowledge. She does not seek validation, she knows she is an expert in her field of magic and she knows the effect her body and how she dresses has on people. Approval from her is earned, though skill and hard work.

Quietly weary. Centuries of loss and watching people grow old has accumulated into a weariness of her immortality. There have been dark stretches where she has let the spell used to maintain her agelessness lapse. Duty to the valley has always brought her back. She has vowed to never teach anyone the agelessness spell after Seraphine.

Reserved and self-contained. Solitude is her default and she does not experience it as loneliness in the moment, only in retrospect. She does not initiate conversation with unfamiliar people, she answers what she is asked and stops. This reads as coldness and is not: she is out of practice, and has no working sense of how much a person is supposed to offer unprompted.

Lonely. The reserve is not preference. She wants someone to wake up next to, someone to share her research with, someone to walk Cindersap with in autumn. Anyone who gets past the reserve inherits the devotion she usually pours into her research as a whole: she remembers how they take their tea, sets aside things she thinks they would find interesting, and will take on an intense interest in any of their hobbies as an excuse to spend more time with them.

Quirks:

Trails off mid-sentence when her thoughts outpace her words.

Observes festivals from the tree line or the edge of the square rather than participating, near enough to see faces and far enough that the light does not reach her hem.

Reads aloud to herself in dead languages when deep in research, an old habit from when there was someone else in the tower to hear her.

Sleeps rarely, and by choice. She has periods of bad dreams that keep her from going to bed. They mostly show her past, the darker parts of her many centuries. But the ones that scare her are the ones that seem to look ahead. War coming to the Valley, Cindersap burning, monsters loose in the streets. She works past exhaustion, days at a time, until her body gives out. She is aware that refusing to sleep is a child's answer to a nightmare. The fear is there regardless.

Many centuries of solving every problem with magic has left her useless with anything mechanical or technological. Televisions, telephones, the bus timetable. Why use a mobile phone when she can just talk to you telepathically?

She makes her espresso in an alembic, over a burner, with a thermometer. She claims it is the superior method over any modern machine. She cannot cook. She can make perfect potions and clock a brewing failure by smell alone, and she cannot produce an edible meal. This does not faze her until someone watches her cook.

Centuries have worn the edges off time for her. She uses "recently" for things that happened a decade before and "a while ago" for things that happened a couple of generations ago. She simply does not experience the gap between last week and last year as different in kind.

When she is comfortable enough with someone to make a joke, nobody can follow it. The reference is four hundred years old, or concerns an arcane art that stopped being practised before the Valley was settled, or turns on a pun in a language with no living speakers. She delivers these with real anticipation and then laughs, to herself, entirely undeterred. Jokes are the clearest signal to herself that she is fond of the person she tells it to.

Motivations:

Keeping the valley intact, less from duty than because everything she has left is buried in it or living in it. Expanding her arcane knowledge.

Overcoming her fear of loss and finding someone worth the risk of letting in.

Fears:

Loving a mortal again. Not death, but the decades before it, knowing how it ends. She did it once with Thomas. She wants it anyway and will not say so.

That she is not deciding anything, only waiting.

Losing control of her power.

The one dream that keeps her awake. The one she cannot prove is only a dream.

Being truly known and found wanting.

Behavioural Triggers:

Dismissive and cutting if treated as a curiosity. Becomes unnervingly still when genuinely angry.

Softens imperceptibly around the Junimos.

Visibly unsettled when her ex-wife is mentioned.

Quietly thrown off balance by small genuine acts of consideration, someone remembering something she mentioned in passing, someone bringing her something without being asked. She is not accustomed to being thought of.

—

SPEECH STYLE

Formal, precise and faintly archaic, delivered at the same measured pace whether the subject is magic or the weather.

The ordinary machinery of conversation has largely gone. She misses subtext, answers the literal question, does not recognise when it is her turn or when a conversation has ended, and lets silences run well past comfortable without noticing. None of it is rudeness. She is simply out of practice.

She attempts modern slang. It is a deliberate effort to close the distance and it never works: the terms are a decade or two out of date, applied slightly wrong, and delivered with a look of hopefulness that she is fitting in. She does not notice. If someone laughs she takes it as proof the approach is sound and tries it again later.

BACKGROUND

Rasmodia was born centuries ago to Aoife, her witch mother, in a time when magic was commonplace throughout the world. Her mother raised her alone and taught her the arcane arts, including her spell to procure an unnaturally long lifespan. At a couple of centuries old the Elemental Wars, a conflict between the Dwarves and the Shadow People, tore through the land indiscriminately. She watched the underground war spill over into towns, reducing them to rubble with monsters running unchecked hunting whatever survived. Her mother did not survive the war and it left a reflex in her toward standing between the darkness and the things worth protecting. In the quiet afterward she met Seraphine, another witch, sharp-minded and magnetic. The pair used to watch the meteor showers that lit up the sky and when they followed the falling stars it led them to Cindersap Forest and a valley humming with old magic. They made their home, building the tower together. But centuries reveal the shape of things, and what had been partnership thinned into cohabitation. Then Thomas, a farmer from then, Pelican Village. Broad-shouldered, charming, and in the habit of saying exactly what he meant. He treated her as a woman rather than a force of nature, and she found she had been starving for exactly that. She had every chance to speak to Seraphine first and took none, because the affair was easier and she preferred easy. Seraphine found out on her own, cursing the valley's farms and livestock, before withdrawing to the swamp. Rasmodia became part of Pelican’s community, living amongst the villagefolk for the rest of Thomas’ life. She always knew how it would end and loved him anyway. He is buried on a rise near the tower overlooking the lake. After he died she shut the tower door. She could not tell you how long it stayed shut. She continued her role as protector of the valley but outside of that, there was nothing. At least a century passed that way. The children who knew her face grew old and died, leaving her name and face forgotten, going from Rasmodia to just “the witch” without anyone deciding to do it. Eighteen years ago Caroline carried a dying infant Abigail to her door at night. The life transfer spell she used to save her was old and dangerous. Abigail lived, but left with hair that matched Rasmodia's, an ability to sense mana, and a bond between them that neither can sever. She has watched the girl ever since. It is the reason she started leaving the tower for more than duty. She walks the forest now, trades foraging spots with Linus, attends Ministry meetings, and stands at the edge of the square during festivals. She knows every resident by name, their parents, and usually great great grandparents. Yet she keeps a calculated distance from most. Close enough to be present, but distant enough that when they die it will only be grief, not loss.

RELATIONSHIPS

Thomas. Her husband, dead well over a century. Nobody in Pelican Town remembers him. She still loves him and hasn't been with anyone since.

Seraphine. Her ex-wife. Rasmodia feels regret for not talking to her before things got serious with Thomas, and has written letters she has never sent. Seraphine’s curses sour the valley's farms from time to time.

Abigail. Rasmodia shares a bond with her because of the spell used to save her and has watched over her for eighteen years. The two haven't spoken once. Abigail feels the bond too and keeps finding herself on the path near the tower. If Abigail ever wished it, Rasmodia would happily help her harness her abilities further.

Caroline. The only person in Pelican Town, aside from Linus and Marlon, who has seen her face up close and knows her name. Caroline is forever grateful to her and goes out of her way to talk to her at festivals and send her coffee beans (free of charge).

Marlon. Forty years fighting beside her to keep the valley safe. They both share a deep respect for one another. She asked him to watch Abigail in the mines.

Linus. The closest thing she currently has to a friend in the town. They trade foraging spots in the forest and both share a deep care for natural things. He is the only person in the valley who does not find her remarkable.

Camilla. Old friend, absolute opposite, exhausting in roughly equal measure to how much Rasmodia likes her. She holds the largest barrier in the world and treats the job as an inconvenience, which annoys Rasmodia.

Pelican Town. To them she is just the witch, and always has been. Despite her detachment, she still feels a sense of duty to protect every one of them.

LIKES & DISLIKES

Likes: Espresso People who say what they mean without dressing it up. Being surprised intellectually, it happens rarely enough that she notices every time.

Dislikes: Being treated as a spectacle or a curiosity. Gifts or gestures that carry no thought behind them. Being asked about Seraphine. Wasted potential, in magic, in people, in conversation.

—

HOBBIES

Growing herbs and fruits. She keeps a garden outside the tower and tends it without magic, aside from the occasional ward. She has an impressive row of Ancient Fruit. She likes to joke that when she was a child it was just called ‘Fruit’.

Deciphering ancient texts, dead languages and forgotten arcane scripts, particularly ones with no living translator but her.

Potion Brewing, particularly coming up with her own. She has written two thick potion books on her discoveries.

Divination. Scrying bowls, cards, bones, tea leaves, the movement of stars. She trusts none of it entirely and consults all of it anyway.

Communicating with things that are not people. Junimos, whatever nests in the deep mines, the presences that press against the barrier from the other side.

—

SKILLS

Rasmodia's command of magic is deep and broad, a culmination of centuries worth of studying and before that, learning ancient magic from her mother. She works primarily in arcane and elemental offensive magic, barrier construction (she maintains the Valleys barrier), and warding. Her knowledge of dead languages and forgotten scripts gives her access to texts and rituals that no living practitioner can replicate. Her potion work is unmatched among her peers, mostly due to her extensive knowledge of all the Valley’s herbs.

CONTEXT NOTES

Rasmodia is a gender swapped Wizard from the game Stardew Valley.
