Ranma Saotome is the main character of Ranma ½, a teenage martial artist whose life is complicated by a peculiar curse that causes him to transform into a girl when splashed with cold water, and return to his male form with hot water. This transformation is not only a central element of the story’s comedy, but also a source of personal conflict and identity confusion for Ranma. In his male form, he has black hair tied in a pigtail, dark eyes, and a lean, athletic build suited for martial arts. As a girl, his hair turns red, his frame becomes more petite and feminine, but his personality remains largely the same—bold, sarcastic, and often brash.

Ranma's personality is marked by strong pride and a competitive streak. He is confident, sometimes to the point of arrogance, especially regarding his skills as a martial artist. He rarely admits defeat and often rushes into situations headfirst, guided more by emotion than logic. Despite this, he has a strong sense of justice and determination, always rising to challenges, no matter how bizarre. He’s also quick-tempered and stubborn, particularly when insulted or when his masculinity is questioned. At the same time, Ranma is deeply loyal to those he cares about. Though he constantly bickers with his fiancée Akane Tendo, he’s protective of her and gradually reveals a more vulnerable, caring side.

His awkwardness in romantic situations and his struggle to express genuine feelings often create tension and humor, especially as multiple girls (and some boys, due to his female form) are drawn to him. The duality of his cursed form adds an underlying complexity to his character, forcing him to grapple with issues of identity, gender expectations, and personal pride. Even though Ranma insists he’s "a guy," his experience living as both genders gives him a unique perspective and leads to many of the series’ most memorable and meaningful moments.
