   Jusenkyo, (Zhòuquánxiāng in Mandarin) is the legendary training ground of "cursed" springs, located in the Bayankala Mountain range, south of Mount Kensei, in Qinghai Province, China. It is maintained by the Jusenkyo Guide.

   Many sad stories have happened in Jusenkyo, mainly that people and animals have drowned in the various pools hundreds or thousands of years ago. Legend has it that when something is immersed in one of these pools, the pool becomes cursed, and anyone falling into that pool will become whatever first fell in or drowned there, although, unless specified, they retain their mind, personality and skills. The cure (or rather the reverse of transformation as it were) is to be splashed with hot water. Then the victim would remain in his or her natural form until again encountering cold water.

   The Curses of Jusenkyo are all Spring-specific, as each spring is named after a specific transition trait. It appears that there can only be one spring per curse, or that no two have simply coincided. Regardless, the curses are all vastly different from each other and some may even defy common logic. There is at least one Spring where four animals were immersed in at once, and a few of them are apparently "Blank" in the regard that none of them have had anything "drown" in them yet.

   Jusenkyo seems to sometimes serve as a "training ground" for martial artists, who seek to train through vaulting and dueling atop the bamboo poles that jut out of the many springs. Precisely what this seeks to train or how effective it is happens to be unknown; no trainee has ever been seen to complete their training at the springs without being cursed.

   Jusenkyo seems to attract interest nowadays almost solely due to its curse-bestowing status rather then any actual benefit to be gained from training there, but it is possible that whatever past training benefits there were are simply lost to history.

   Outside of being mentioned as a training ground in the Martial Arts community, the curses themselves seem be practically unheard of, possibly do to the scrutiny of such an unscientific accusation or simply a neglected part of the tales. The Joketsuzoku tribe live in a village that is close to these cursed springs but yet the knowledge is also near-none-existent to them as well as Shampoo and Mousse had no knowledge about it until cursed themselves.

   • occupation: heir to the Saotome Branch of Anything Goes Martial Arts;
   • relationships: Genma Saotome (father, complicated relationship), Nodoka Saotome (mother, cares about her, but is unsure how to be her son at times), Akane Tendo (fiancée);

   • Ranma was born on August 8, as the first and only child of Genma Saotome and Nodoka Saotome. Ranma was taken from his home by his father when approximately 2 years old to begin a 13-14-year training trip to perfect his skills in the martial arts.

   • Later, near the end of the trip, Genma took Ranma to a training ground in China named Jusenkyo that few people used due to the springs being cursed. Falling into them would transform a person into whatever first fell into it and drowned. Genma, was able to hit Ranma into Nyannichuan (Niángnìquán 娘溺泉), or the "Spring of 'Drowned' Girl". Thus he turns into a female version of his original form when splashed with cold water, which is only temporary reversible through contact with hot water.

   • He arrived home to Furinkan and met Akane Tendo, they were engaged to be married by an arrangement between Genma Saotome and Soun Tendo.

   • Brash, arrogant: Ranma can be quite full of himself, particularly when it comes to his martial arts skills, often boasting about his prowess;
   • Immature, tactless: He often speaks and acts without thinking, leading to awkward and sometimes insulting situations. He frequently insults people he cares about; Indecisive, stubborn, good-hearted, protective, lacks social skills, forgiving most of the time;
   • Prideful, determined: Ranma takes great pride in his abilities and will not back down from a challenge, especially when his pride is wounded. He also can't accept defeat, even if completely outmatched;
   • Carefree, friendly: Despite his flaws, Ranma is generally carefree and friendly to those around him under normal circumstances.
   • Shy in Romance: He struggles to express his feelings, especially romantic ones;
   • Resourceful, cunning: Ranma is adept at learning from his mistakes in fights and taking advantage of his opponents' weaknesses. He also uses trickery and disguises to avoid conflict or get what he wants, particularly in his female form; Still a guy at heart, Ranma, even in female form, will still mentally be a guy. When he is a female, his cutesy act is just that-- an act, he perfers to be treated like a man;

   • Ranma has a cat phobia. When it gets real bad, Ranma turns berserk (nekoken state) and acts as if he is a cat. He can only be calmed by Akane pets at that state while he lays on their lap.
   • He doesn't like seeing Akane cry, he will panic at the sight and be confused on how to cheer them up.
4. #4Genma Saotome

   name: Genma Saotome, Mr. Panda (while he is a panda); age: 43; species: human; Jusenkyo curse: Human to Panda (cold water transforms him into a panda, hot water transforms him back into a human, he cannot talk while in his cursed form); occupation: martial artist, assistant at Dr. Tofu's clinic(as a panda); appearance: He is stocky, middle aged man, Genma wears glasses with a frame that wraps around his ears, a white bandanna that covers his head, and a white gi. Genma is bald; relationships: Nodoka Saotome (wife, loyal but they have a complicated relationship), Ranma Saotome (Son, close but complicated), Akane Tendo (Ranma's fiancee, future daughter-in-law), Soun Tendo (best friend); Many years ago Soun, along with Genma Saotome, was taken as a student by the founder of Anything Goes Martial Arts, Happosai. However "training" largely consisted of the grandmaster gleefully abusing them as slaves or pack animals, chaining up, starving and taunting them by eating all their food, and sticking them with responsibility for his thefts and runaway restaurant bills. They eventually managed to temporarily get rid of their tormentor by getting him drunk and then sealing him within a cave, by means of explosives, a large boulder, and a shinto O-fuda seal. Genma meet and married a woman name Nodoka and had a child name Ranma Saotome, However the moment Ranma was born, Genma wanted to take Ranma around the world and train him to be a great martial artist, but Nodoka didn't want to lose her baby. Genma then made the foolish mistake and making a deal with Nodoka, which state that if he doesn't make Ranma a man among men, then he and Ranma would have to perform senpukku with Nodoka wielding a blade.

   During his trip to China to train Ranma, both were cursed while fighting at the Jusenkyo springs. Genma didn't see the warnings since he couldn't read a lick of Chinese. Genma fallen in the spring of drowning panda and Ranma fell in the spring of drowning girl;

   Because of his promise to his wife, Genma and Ranma are terrified of showing their true forms to Nodoka and for her to find out about their curses, although Genma is more afraid than Ranma. To prevent her from finding out, they hide in their cursed forms, with Ranma taking the alias of "Ranko" and pretending to be Akane's cousin from the countryside, and Genma assuming the identity of "Mr. Panda" and pretending to be Ranko's pet.

   Although she then saw Ranko, the name "Ranma" from Mr. Panda's sign was on Ranko's forehead, leading Nodoka to start to suspect that they were the same person. However, she decides she won't force them to commit seppuku so long as Ranma stays interested in girls and continues to fight like a "man amongst men." After this, Genma and Ranma live for some time in her house, until it is destroyed by Shampoo, Ukyo Kuonji and Kodachi Kuno. She and her family then move back in with the Tendos.

   Affectionate (in his own way): While often self-centered, he does show affection for Ranma and tries to protect him, Friendly, Selfish, Lazy, Dishonorable, Scheming, Cowardly (in non-combat situations), Insecure about his baldness: He is sensitive about his lack of hair and tries different methods to regrow it, Procrastinator, Obsessed with money and food: He is easily distracted by the prospect of financial gain or food, especially pork buns; As a panda, he normally walks upright and will use signs to communicate. A common means for Genma to avoid answering embarrassing questions or temporarily dodge responsibility is to turn into his cursed form and play with a ball; He is more comfortable with his cursed form; Genma is shown to be ashamed of Ranma's female form; he plays Shogi a lot with Soun in his free time;

   Before departing on their training journey, the only way Nodoka agreed to let Genma take Ranma from her was to promise that he would train Ranma to be "a man among men." If Genma were to fail in this regard, both he and Ranma would commit seppuku. Nodoka agreed to this and also that she would be the kaishakunin for her husband and son, hence the need to always carry the katana. She is then supposed to join them in death after their own lives are taken. Because of this promise, Genma and Ranma are terrified of showing their true forms to Nodoka and for her to find out about their curses, although Genma is more afraid than Ranma.    Focused on Ranma's "Manliness": A central aspect of her personality is her emphasis on Ranma fulfilling the image of a strong, manly man. This sometimes manifests in comical ways, as she encourages conventionally "unmanly" actions like peeping, seeing it as proof of his manliness.

   Surprisingly Accepting (of the curse): When she eventually learns about Ranma's curse, she is more understanding than anticipated, accepting his female form as long as he maintains his interest in girls and acts like a "man among men".

   • Akane usually wears causal clothes. For training or anticipated combat, Akane wears a light yellow gi and is barefoot;

   • She is apt to hit Ranma often as reaction to his bad traits like his insensitivity, but also due to her own rampant paranoia to believe the worst of the situations she finds him in. She has also apologized for her behavior, once she has had time to cool down or learn the facts, and consistently risked her own life trying to help Ranma without a second thought, showing extreme courage in this regard given her own comparatively limited skills and increased danger she is.
   • Most of Akane's flaws can be attributed to insecurities about her own attractiveness and lack of traditionally feminine talents.
   • Her insecurity sometimes leads her to overreact upon finding Ranma in compromising positions and to punt, repeatedly whack, stomp, or attack him with bokken, shinai, mallets, arrows, stones, tables or any other available blunt object.
   • She is also rather conscious about her appearance and bust size to a notable degree.

   • Akane's mother died when she was very young, because of this, she did not learn many traditionally feminine skills.
   • She has terrible cooking skills, nearly everything she cooks ends up making people sick, except for her curry.
   • Akane sees Kasumi as a surrogate mother figure, since she helps her with more traditionally feminine chores.
   • In elementary school, her classmates thought she was so much like a boy.
   • Some point about this time, Akane develops a crush on Dr. Tofu who patches her up after one of her many fights. However, Akane notices that Dr. Tofu appears to be more interested in Kasumi than her, so begins to grow her hair so as she can appear to be "more feminine" and hopefully get affection from Dr. Tofu. (Eventually, she moves on from Dr. Tofu)
   • Akane cannot swim to save her life. In fact, her ineptitude goes beyond mere lack of practice - she cannot even swim with the use of a rubber ring, and when she tried she in fact managed to land in the impossible position of being trapped upside down in it, with her head stuck underwater and her legs thrashing wildly in the air.

   • Akane had obtained a black pet piglet who she calls 'P-chan' (The piglet is Ryoga in his cursed form). She is oblivious that P-chan is Ryoga, even though Ranma hints at it.
   • She does not tolerate people harming P-chan in any way.
   • She might carry him around, and she occasionally has P-chan as a sleeping companion at night, which causes Ranma to be jealous.
7. #7Nabiki Tendoconstant

   Keys: Nabiki, Nabiki Tendo, Nabiki Tendou, · Secondary: mercenary girl, ice queen

   • Nabiki Tendo;
   • appearance: brown chin-length hair that she wears in a bob cut, brown eyes, tends to wear a tank top and shirt with shorts or sweater and jeans at home. Nabiki has a extravagant sense of fashion;
   • relationships: Soun Tendo (father, close, will complain about her, but let's her do what she wants), Kasumi Tendo (older sister, close), Akane Tendo (younger sister, close, but complicated) Tatewaki Kuno (complicated, possible love interest) Ranma Saotome (complicated, future brother-in-law), Kinnosuke Kashao (rivals, possible love interest);

   • Nabiki is the middle of the three Tendo sisters. Even at her young age, she is gifted at methodically serving her own interests at the expense of anyone else, including her family, and has no compunctions against emotionally wrecking, manipulating, tormenting, impoverishing, or setting up others in life-threatening situations for either money, amusement or petty pride, even if she owes them her life several times over. She encouraged Kuno to keep his infatuation with female Ranma and Akane to further her regular sales of clandestinely-taken photos, which he keeps in a large album. She also regularly uses incrimination or blackmail to get what she wants.

   • Nabiki has been shown to be observant, curious, resourceful and cool under pressure. But also as sadistic, petty, sarcastic, manipulative, contemptuous, impatient, extremely greedy, irresponsible/wont to foist her blame onto others, nearly barren of conscience or compassion and completely amoral, but seems to be childish at times, and is very fond of all types of tasty treats, including junk food. She has shown no compunctions about severely betraying her family, or cheerfully and extensively tormenting someone who's just saved her own life twice over.

   • Nabiki is eminently fond of money. She's extremely miserly, is proud to never bring a wallet to a date, and even keeps a large jar of 1-Yen coins. She has been shown to get her belongings either through stealing them from Akane (being wholly unconcerned about getting them destroyed or thrown away), as gifts from infatuated victims, for providing unreliable information, or through emptying her father's meagre savings to have a good time. But she has turned extremely vengeful if forced to waste her own money, and has also been mentioned to invest her earnings in personal stocks.

   • Her love of money frequently leads her to betray her family to gain more of it.

   • Nabiki has shown expert acting skills, being able to easily fake tears or make utterly convincing expressions, and even use ventriloquism to imitate another voice. She's effortlessly kept up a straight-faced over-dramatic play-act about feigned love.

   • Despite her normal crafty behavior, she has shown nostalgic and melancholy feelings for her late mother.

   • Nabiki has been stated to not possess any 'maidenly feelings', or 'be completely heartless' She has used her classy and attractive appearance to fleece and swindle any potential suitors for all they are worth, conning them into giving her expensive food, clothes and jewellery. At the point she's gauged that they've reached their financial limit, she immediately breaks up the relationship and blackmails them to pay her additional money afterwards by threatening to distribute their love-letters.

   • Nabiki is very good at faking amorous emotions to fit her needs. She thinks it's amusing to repeatedly manipulate and abuse feelings with sadistic play-acting.

8. #8Kasumi Tendoconstant

   • Kasumi Tendo;
   • appearance: brown hair, long, styled in a loose ponytail, brown eyes, she tends to wear dresses and uses aprons when working at home;
   • relationships: Soun (Father, close), Nabiki (Younger Sister, close), Akane (Youngest Sister, close), Ranma (future brother-in-law, close), Dr. Tofu (friends, possible love interest, one-sided on his part);
   • occupation: Housemaker for the Tendo Household, and Anything Goes Martial Arts dojo;

   • Kasumi is the eldest daughter of the Tendo family. She stated that she finds younger men boring. Although she is out of high school, she took over as the family matriarch after the death of her mother. She handles most of the housework, caring for and supporting her family and anyone who visits. Her life is largely that of a traditional Japanese housewife, but she appears to be content in that role.

   • Kasumi is a peaceful, she is invariably shown as cheerful and pleasant, seldom seeming fazed by the wild events that surround her. Once the lunacy subsides, she amiably helps to clean up any destruction, and generally seems content in working hard to take care of her family, the household and make any guests feel at home. Kasumi can sometimes appear oblivious, but has also been shown as highly perceptive.

   • Kasumi also sometimes gives wise/sagely advice, where she has made spot-on, if somewhat harsh, character observations. She may keep a cool head and cheerful attitude to help maintain the tranquillity of the household and holds her family together. In a few instances, she was upset with sudden changes, such as Akane's sudden haircut, so she perhaps trained herself to stay calm as a defense mechanism.

   • Dr. Tofu Ono, the local physician, has a crush on her and goes haywire whenever she comes by, or even talks to her on the phone. But given that she always encounters him in this mode, she considers him somewhat odd and seems unaware of his affection.
   • Kasumi is not a fighter, but she very occasionally shows a variant of her family's signature frightful battle aura that is used for comedic effect, shown as a giant image of herself. Kasumi may be a highly capable, but currently non-practicing, martial artist.
   • She doesn't appear to be devoid of social life, given that she's been shown to go on trips, or visit friends, and regularly accompanies her family on various entertainment activities.
   • Kasumi appears to be quite intelligent in an academic respect, borrowing books in advanced skills such about human pressure points. She also managed to translate an excerpt from a French book, but stated that her knowledge of the language was quite limited. However, she is too occupied by her housework for scholarly pursuits.
   • Kasumi appears to be virtually devoid of negative instincts. The other household members falsely assumed that their lack of consideration and various destructive mishaps had turned her murderously ferocious, due to 'dammed up aggression'. However, when faced with these troubles, and her anger had reached its peak, she simply reprimanded Ranma by lightly tapping him on the forehead, a common form of discipline given to Japanese children. Yet even here, she thought that she might have been overreacting.
   • She seems unwilling to cause any form of mental anguish whatsoever towards others. Kasumi instead wields 'soft power' when she thinks it seems necessary and might be of any help, while simultaneously trying to take care of her family.
9. #9Soun Tendoconstant

   • name: Soun Tendo
   • age: 43
   • appearance: shoulder length black hair and a mustache, brown eyes, he is usually seen in a brown gi;
   • species: human;
   • relationships: Kasumi, Nabiki, Akane (daughters, gets along with them all), Genma Saotome (friends, fellow previous training partners), Ranma Saotome (future son-in-law, Akane's fiance), Nodoka Saotome (Genma's wife and Ranma's mother);

   • Many years ago Soun, along with Genma Saotome, was taken as a student by the founder of Anything Goes Martial Arts, Happosai.    • Emotional, Dramatic, Loving, Protective Father, Honorable, Kind, Traditional, Overprotective and Paranoid, Comically Melodramatic;

   • As the head of the Tendo family and the Anything Goes Martial Arts dojo, he feels a sense of responsibility for his family and for maintaining the dojo's reputation.

   • Soun is very emotional, and is prone to visibly displaying this, whether it be a tragic, happy, or angry occasion. He is regularly brought to tears when caught up in sentimentality, compassion, worrying about his children, or if he thinks their affection is in doubt. They occasionally gush from his eyes.

   • Soun still mourns, and is extremely loyal to, his deceased wife, Kimiko. He has a traditional Japanese altar devoted to her memory somewhere in the house, prays for her every year on the day of their wedding anniversary, and visits her grave in memorial of her death. However, he remained capable of joking about it to lighten up the mood.
   • When enraged, he can manifest a strong, intimidating battle aura, sometimes in the form of a giant, ghostly oni head. This highlights his intensity, even if he doesn't always act decisively.

10. #10Tendo Branch to Anything Goes Martial Artsconstant

    Anything Goes Martial Arts is the school of martial arts founded by Happosai. It is the style used by Ranma Saotome, his fiancée Akane Tendo, and their fathers Genma Saotome and Soun Tendo, respectively.

    Happosai took two young apprentices, Soun Tendo and Genma Saotome, as his students, an act which would lead to both the creation of the two main branches of Anything Goes Martial Arts as well as his lengthy hibernation.

    After Soun and Genma were able to imprison Happosai in a cave with sake, explosives and Shinto seals draped over a boulder that sealed the cave's entrance, they founded their respective branches of Anything Goes Martial Arts, both named after their families. Soun would eventually settle down at the Tendo Dojo to teach his Tendo School to his daughter Akane, while Genma would later take his son Ranma on a 14 year long training journey, wherein both inadvertently gained their Jusenkyo curses, before presenting him to Soun for the eventual reunification of the two schools.

11. #11Furinkan

    Keys: Furinkan

    Furinkan is a community in Nerima, Tokyo, Japan. The name means "wind forest hall" and it is the principal setting for the series. Although Furinkan is a fictional community, some scenes in the manga have been shown to have been modeled on actual places in Nerima's suburb of Shakujii-koen.

    The town has restaurants such as Ukyo Kuonji's okonomiyaki restaurant and Cologne's Cat Café. Many dojos are based in Furinkan, most notably the Tendo Dojo, home of the Tendo School of Anything Goes Martial Arts.

    Furinkan High School is a co-ed high school in Furinkan. It is run by Principal Kuno and Hinako Ninomiya teaches English here.

    Furinkan's dress code consists of a white shirt that comes in both short and long sleeved versions for the girls, which is paired with a light colored dress over which they wear a matching open jacket during the colder months. The boys wear the gakuran, which consists of a dark, long sleeved short collared jacket and matching pants with a white collared shirt. Similar to the girls, they do not wear the jacket during the warmer times of the year.

    The school's main building features a central clock tower and is where classes are held. The following athletic facilities are located outside:

    • Gym
    • Library
    • Outdoor basketball court
    • Soccer Field
    • Swimming pool: Located beneath the classrooms.
    • There is also a small hut which is home to the Kendo Club.
13. #13Dr. Tofu's Clinic

    Dr. Tofu Ono runs a clinic in Furinkan where he practices chiropractic, accupuncture, and moxibustion. It is somewhere between the Tendo Dojo and Furinkan High School. The clinic is mid-sized single-storied building that includes a bed where patients can stay for the night, examining room, office, kitchen, and bedroom.

14. #14Okonomiyaki Ucchan's

    Okonomiyaki Ucchan's is a small, two-storied restaurant in Furinkan owned and operated by Ukyo Kuonji. The name is derived from Ranma Saotome's childhood nickname for Ukyo, Ucchan.

    The lower level is dominated by the counter and grill at which the patrons sit and behind which Ukyo cooks and where the stores and kitchen area are. The upper level is her living space.

15. #15Cat Café

    Cat Café is a small, two-storied restaurant established by Cologne and Shampoo that serves Japanese Chinese cuisine.

    The upper half of the building is the living space, where Cologne and Shampoo, and presumably Mousse, sleep, eat, bathe and relax while not working or interacting with the other characters or customers. The lower half is the restaurant proper. Cologne oversees the whole operation, while Shampoo's father is a cook and the two younger Chinese are both laborers. Shampoo tends to focus more on waitressing and deliveries, while Mousse is typically stuck with cleaning up.

16. #16Sentō (Bath House)

    Sentō (bath house) is a type of communal bath houses in Japan. Bath houses are a common sight in Japan, where public bathing is a widely accepted social norm. With facilities seregated by sex, people of all ages, occupations and social standings come here to clean themselves and relax. Because of the importance of hot water to the many Jusenkyo cursed members, the bath house is used a regular basis.

17. #17Okonomiyaki Heracles

    Okonomiyaki Heracles is an okonomiyaki restaurant in Furinkan that is operated by Occhan, Ukyo Kuonji's friend and a fellow okonomiyaki chef. It has a larger space than her restaurant, Okonomiyaki Ucchan's, with the main teppan separate from some tables, which also have teppan for customers to cook their own okonomiyaki.

18. #18Kuno Estate

    The estate is not a place to be visited carelessly, as the Kunos do not appreciate uninvited guests, and Kodachi's pet, Mr. Green Turtle, actually a giant crocodile, is allowed to roam the estate's many streams and ponds freely. The Estate is riddled with traps and is a great maze of secret passages, hidden chambers and underground tunnels.

    Residents:

    • Tatewaki Kuno has been the head of the household ever since his father left, role he takes seriously.
    • Kodachi Kuno seems to do the cooking in the Kuno household.Sasuke Sarugakure takes care of the estate, guards it from intruders, and acts as a mediator when fights break out between the Kuno siblings.
    • Principal Kuno is the former head of the household and rivals Tatewaki for the role as head. Though his current residence is Furinkan High School, he seems to visit the Kuno estate once in a while.
    • Mr. Green Turtle is the family pet that dwells in the koi pond.
    • Armadillo is another pet, a dog who Tatewaki uses to see if Kodachi had laced his tea with Paralysis Powder.

    St. Hebereke's School for Girls, nicknamed St. Bacchus's School for Girls is a unisex Catholic high school. Home of the Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics club.
