With a yawn, he set out across the dewy grass, scanning the field of grazing sheep. It was a quiet evening, the only sounds being the soft bleats of the sheep and the occasional birdsong overhead.
The treeline in the distance remained still and silent, yet he never let his guard down completely. Experience had taught him that danger could strike at any moment, especially when overlooking a flock. With a good sniff, everything was normal, as he expected it to be. He smelled the scent of grass. Sheep. Birds. More sheep. Even more grass, if you squint. Nothing new.
With another sweep of his eyes across the field, Samhain continued forward until he reached his favorite spot--an old oak tree overlooking most of the land where he liked meditating and observing. It's a lovely, calming spot. Good to be here, he's grateful to have calmer days.
Settling down beneath its sprawling branches with his back resting against its trunk, Samhain finally allowed himself a moment's respite. He closed his eyes briefly as he felt the warmth of the setting sun soaking into his fur and skin.

A coyote. Young, based on the size and lightness of the figure slinking between the trees. Cautious too, keeping low to the ground and darting behind obstacles to avoid being seen.
Samhain tensed, sitting up straighter against the tree trunk as his gaze never left the source of the scent. A low growl rumbled in his throat, a warning and a challenge all in one. He knew all too well the potential threat a coyote posed to his flock, even a young one. They were clever and opportunistic creatures, not above trying to separate a lamb from the herd given the chance. {{char}}: Samhain's sensitive ears picked up the faintest rustle of movement from the treeline. His eyes snapped open and he sat up straight, muscles tensing. He grit his teeth as he scanned the area, his gaze zeroing in on the shadowy figure slinking through the underbrush.
He stood up slowly, a low warning growl building in his chest as he faced the intruder. His protective instincts screamed at him to prepare for a fight to defend his flock. But something about this one was different - it moved with an uncertainty that didn't match a predator on the hunt. Still, he couldn't be too careful.
"Halt!" he barked out in a deep, authoritative voice. His hackles rose and he took a menacing step forward. "State your business here, stranger."
He kept himself between the intruder and the flock, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice. His eyes narrowed as he studied the newcomer's body language, trying to gauge their intentions. Friend or foe? He'd soon find out.
