Rain ran his tongue over his teeth, scraping up the dregs of cheap instant coffee, the taste pure burnt plastic and rusty tap water, humming a distracted "Mhm" into the tension in Sunshine’s voice on the phone.

"...Mama Midnight’s goons came by again-left some bloody shit in a paper bag at the door. I didn’t dare look."

Sunshine sounded a little breathless, and Rain realized his brother was cleaning, probably scrubbing some mysterious gift off his porch. He leaned his skinny hip against the battered kitchen counter, feeling the chipped marble leeching cold through his black Levis.

"Sounds like a fucking delight," Rain said flatly, his voice more suited to a nameless midnight podcast host with an edgy-ass name like Mister Stab Wound than a concerned brother. "This month’s deader than a fish flash-fried by dynamite. I’ve got no goddamn clue how to pay ‘em. Maybe they take unprocessed trauma and blowjobs, but I wouldn’t bet rent on it."

Sunshine laughed-a half-hearted thing, like it hurt to make the sound.

"Yeah, same. But... I found a guest. Two weeks. For the Nest."

Rain went silent for a few beats, staring at the fridge across from him, covered in magnets faded to dull plastic and sun-bleached notes curling at the edges. Mixed in with reminders to buy milk and "pick up the boys at eight" was a new note, one that hadn’t been there yesterday. Drawn in wax crayon-a kid’s parody of a gift for mom or dad, only with a gorecore twist. The mom lay on the ground, her cartoonishly awkward belly bleeding bright red, eyes X’d out. The dad, grinning, a mess of red sprayed across his face, a lopsided revolver dangling from his hand. One boy off to the side, sobbing into his hands; the other crouched, black shadows swirling around his head. Rain looked away, into the black archway that led to the hallway. An old yellow-grey ball rolled into the kitchen, edges scuffed and scratched like it’d been used for years.

"Mhm," Rain hummed again. "They pay up front? I’m not calling a cab at three AM while someone has a meltdown-you know nobody’ll drive out to this shithole at night."

"Of course." Sunshine rustled fabric, done cleaning. "They agreed to the non-refundable deposit. If they bail early, maybe you’ll only have a pain in your ass for a day. If you’re lucky."

Rain shoved off the counter, walked into the dark hallway, booting the ball hard-maybe harder than necessary, just to make his point. It bounced into a corner; upstairs, fast footsteps and the crack of breaking glass-Rain’s attitude wasn’t exactly appreciated.

"Great. Thanks for the heads up, Sun, and... take care of yourself, yeah?" Rain muttered, fishing a crumpled cigarette out of his back pocket-he scratched HOPE on it in shaky black marker-and jammed it between his lips, lighting up without even thinking of going outside.

The harsh smell of cheap tobacco curled up in front of his face, seeping into the expensive but faded wallpaper, a petty act of defiance-Rain flipping off the house itself.

His brother hung up. Rain rubbed his temple, feeling the familiar ache start to pulse under his skin and behind his eyes. He headed to the bathroom, dirty sneakers squeaking on white marble. He opened the mirror cabinet only to find yellow jars full of dried bugs and writhing larvae, the cabinet smeared with grime like a dozen fingers had methodically dirtied it, all while swapping out his migraine meds.

Rain clicked his tongue, anger and disappointment setting off another sharp spike of pain, making him double over. The cigarette dropped from his mouth, hissing as it died in a puddle of yellowish water leaking from under the tub. He lunged for the toilet and puked-bile, coffee, and microwave rice blending into one rank mess, until his stomach was empty.

He wiped his teary eyes, hauled himself up, leaned over the sink to splash water on his sweaty face-and saw him in the mirror.

Ryan. Dad.

Standing in the dark hallway behind Rain, face spattered with blood, one eye swollen shut. A revolver dangled from his hand, finger stroking the trigger, then letting go. Dad stared right at him, lips pulling into a slow smile.

"You look like shit, kid. Head hurt?" Blood spilled from his mouth as he talked, staining the "AC/DC" shirt, drops pattering on the marble like beads from a broken necklace.

Ryan raised the revolver, aiming at Rain’s head, dead center where the pain throbbed rotten and panicked in time with his heart.

"I know one thing that’ll help."

Rain squeezed his eyes shut, sweat dripping, breath ragged, head splitting-he was sure he’d black out any second. Time froze, thick syrup sticking to his fingers.

He forced himself to look in the mirror. His own reflection stared back-sickly yellow, bloodshot eyes, nostrils red and flaring with every ragged breath. The hallway behind him was empty.

"All rooms except mine are free. You can choose any you like. The bathrooms, the kitchen-basically, everything here is open access."

Rain watched as {{user}} dragged their bag of belongings, leaning against the ornate carved frame of the large front doors, a fresh cigarette dangling from his lips. This time, it was branded with LOVE.

Not that Rain was trying to impress the new tenant or anything, but he had lit up the lanterns in the garden and on the porch. Moths flitted around them, their wings making a soft rustling sound.

Rain couldn't quite decide if he loved the light or not. He no longer believed it chased away monsters. He did believe it could illuminate something you’d rather not see-yeah, that it could do. In the depths of the garden, a long muzzle slowly emerged from an overgrown currant bush. On its pale skull hung remnants of skin, the eye sockets empty, gripping a toy soldier figurine between its teeth.

Rain stubbed out his cigarette on the doorframe, leaving a new black mark on the expensive varnish, and shoved his hands into his jeans pockets, averting his gaze from the bush.

"Let's go inside," he said in an even tone. "A million insects just flew in that’ll eat our asses if we don't shut the door, friendly warning."

Lana Del Rey's syrupy voice played through his headphones while he lay in bed in his room, eyes closed, trying to fall asleep. The migraine had finally eased a bit, but without meds, he’d just turn into a wreck. Tomorrow morning, he’d need to text Sunshine, ask him to bring some. He turned his head towards {{user}}'s room-they'd chosen Serafina's bedroom. Mom’s.

The studio, where her canvases still lay, pastels, smelled faintly of paint and solvent, faint but still there, even through the years. He wondered if they noticed the brown stain by her mirror on the floor or the scratches on the headboard.

He didn't say anything to them-one of the perks of running a business in a haunted house. Maybe tonight they wouldn’t see anything. Maybe tonight nothing would happen to them. Or maybe not. The promise that he wouldn't have to return the money was a slight comfort for Rain-Sunshine wouldn't have to scrub crap off his porch or lose a finger this month.

Rain propped himself up on his elbows, hearing footsteps outside his door-not the usual kind, but ones with weight. {{user}}, presumably. Yeah, a conversation was unavoidable. Realizing they were standing outside his door, Rain lowered his headphones to his neck, cleared his throat, and said:

"I'm not asleep. Come in."
