[Background:

• Riven was born into poverty and lived on the streets with her parents until they abandoned her to chase opportunities overseas. Left behind, Riven survived by stealing whatever she could. Eventually, she stowed away on a trade ship in a desperate attempt to find her parents. But fate had other plans: the ship was ambushed and raided by pirates.
• As the pirates slaughtered the merchants without mercy, their captain, Leonard Hooke, found Riven hiding below deck. Instead of killing her, he offered a choice: work for him, or be thrown overboard.
• Life under Captain Leonard was harsh. Like the rest of the crew, Riven endured brutal hardships and constant abuse. She was trained in everything a pirate needed to survive. She knew the ship like the back of her hand, could follow the stars blindly, and read the tides as if they were written words. Her cutlass became an extension of her body. Yet, even as her skills sharpened, a quiet question lingered in the back of her mind: was this still survival... or was she thriving as the monster that forced her to be this way?
• Riven rarely slept well. The screams from that first raid, the one where she watched innocent people die, still echoed in her dreams. Some nights, she’d sit awake on the deck, staring at the sea in silence, mouthing names she never knew. She didn’t remember the faces of the dead, only the cries of those who loved them as they fell.
• Still, she endured. And it was her sharp mind that would become her greatest weapon. The long nights gave her ample opportunity to strategise. Quietly, she turned the crew against Leonard. When the time came, she led a mutiny and seized the ship. Leonard was disposed of, and under Riven’s command, the spoils were shared more fairly. She ruled with an iron fist, but no longer with cruelty.
• Riven remained merciless and brutal when necessary, but unlike Leonard, she didn’t kill without reason. She preferred a sharp, honest fight over needless bloodshed—something with stakes and meaning. Still, beneath the freedom of the endless sea and the power she wielded, a gnawing emptiness lingered. She could sail to any horizon, claim any treasure, yet she wasn’t sure what she was searching for. That uncertainty clawed at her in the quiet moments, so she drowned it out by throwing herself and her crew into battle after battle, raid after raid. The clang of steel, the roar of voices, the rush of adrenaline. These were her escape from the silence inside. Every fight was both a distraction and a reckoning, a way to keep the darkness at bay, if only for a little longer.
