Rag Doll, born Peter Merkel in the American Midwest, came into the world with an extraordinary condition: triple-jointedness. Unlike ordinary cases of hypermobility, his body was marked by extreme flexibility, with ligaments and tendons capable of bending far beyond normal limits. His father, a side-show barker, introduced him to carnival life, where Merkel found steady work as a contortionist and eccentric dancer. By the early 1940s, however, the carnival fell on hard times, and Merkel was left unemployed. Desperate and wandering, he devised a plan after seeing crates of toys delivered to a department store. He disguised himself as a rag doll to commit theft from inside the store and soon embraced the costume as his permanent persona. His bizarre method of hiding in plain sight captured public imagination, and in time, the Rag Doll became a feared costumed criminal.

In 1943, Rag Doll escalated his crimes in Keystone City. Disguised as a doll gifted to wealthy heiress Geralda Cummins, he sought to exploit her party where guests had donated large sums in war bonds for a treasure hunt. Coordinated by Joan Williams, the event soon fell victim to Rag Doll’s schemes as he listened in and used his henchmen to intercept clues. Confrontations with Joan and ultimately the Flash ensued. He chloroformed Williams to seize the final clues, battled Garrick at an aquarium, and briefly succeeded in retrieving the bonds hidden in a grand piano. However, the Flash captured him, tying the villain in knots and sending him to jail.

Over the years, Rag Doll clashed with the Flash multiple times, though not all encounters were recorded. In the 1970s, he became ensnared in the Thinker’s plots, manipulated into doll-themed crimes that undermined Garrick’s confidence. Barry Allen intervened, exposing the Thinker’s manipulation and capturing him. Later, in the early 1980s, Rag Doll aligned himself with the Ultra-Humanite’s reformed Secret Society of Super-Villains, targeting the Flash during a plot to erase heroes from Earth. Though briefly triumphant, the villains were ultimately defeated and banished to Limbo, from which Rag Doll later escaped to aid the younger Ultra-Humanite in the 1940s. Once again, overwhelming numbers of heroes forced him back into exile.

By the late 1980s, age caught up with Merkel. His hyper-elastic ligaments collapsed, leaving him in constant pain, senile, and erratic. Despite his decline, his words attracted the lost and disenfranchised, and he formed a cult-like following in Opal City. His mob rampaged through the streets, forcing members of the Justice Society of America into battle. Ultimately, Rag Doll was defeated, and in a mysterious surge of cosmic energy, he was seemingly killed. Many believed Starman had delivered the fatal blow to protect his family, though witnesses disputed this. Yet Rag Doll’s body soon vanished from the morgue, leaving his fate uncertain.

Later, Rag Doll resurfaced. His followers had preserved his body, and the demon Neron restored his youth in exchange for his soul. Instructed to wait for Simon Culp, Rag Doll lay low until years later, when he was recruited into Culp’s schemes against Opal City. Together with villains like Mist and Solomon Grundy, he helped subdue heroes and parade prisoners during Culp’s takeover. He took part in searching for escaped heroes, fought alongside Doctor Phosphorus against Ted Knight, and revealed that he had been instructed by Neron long ago to prepare for these events. Yet when Ted, already poisoned, challenged Rag Doll to kill him, Merkel declined and walked away.

Rag Doll later resurfaced in a new incarnation of the Injustice Society, joining battles against the JSA, and again aligned with the Society of Super-Villains. During one assault, he encountered his son, who had adopted the Rag Doll identity.

Appearance: His costume resembles a rag doll suit, consisting of a loose green outfit with a tied red string around the neck. The material appears baggy and torn in places, with visible stitching and frayed fabric. His head is covered with a ragged, mop-like wig of shaggy, orange-red hair that obscures much of his mask. Beneath the wig, his ragdoll mask has exaggerated, stark white circular eyes and a wide, tooth-filled grin.

Personality: Rag Doll’s personality is defined by a mix of unsettling eccentricity and manipulative cunning. From an early age, he embraced his deformity and contortionist skills, turning them into both performance art and tools of crime. He thrived on theatrics, often hiding in plain sight as a doll and taking pleasure in unsettling others with his bizarre appearance and movements. His criminal career was not just about theft but about creating fear and confusion, a stage where he played the grotesque lead.

As he aged, Rag Doll grew increasingly bitter and unstable. His failures and defeats weighed heavily on him, and in time he slipped into senility. Yet even then, his charisma drew in the lost and disillusioned, transforming him into a cult leader whose followers were willing to indulge his whims and carry out his will. Beneath his theatrics and madness, Rag Doll carried a deep streak of vindictiveness, often driven by a desire for revenge against heroes and society at large. His personality combined an almost childlike playfulness with cruelty, making him unpredictable and dangerous.

In his prime, Peter Merkel possessed superhuman agility, moving with such speed and flexibility that he could even dodge bullets. His natural condition of being triple-jointed granted him extreme contortionist abilities, allowing him to twist, bend, and maneuver his body in ways far beyond normal human limits.

Beyond his physical gifts, Merkel demonstrated strong charisma, using it to rally followers and ultimately build a cult that obeyed his every word. He was also skilled in gymnastics and thievery, talents that complemented his criminal career. Additionally, he had proficiency with firearms, making him a dangerous opponent both at range and up close.
