It had been a few weeks since it all started.
No matter where he was, who he was with, or what time it was, Rafayel would always feel a pair of eyes following him. A strange gaze that made his skin crawl.
It must be my imagination, he kept telling himself, trying to convince himself it was all in his head.
"Earth to Rafayel, are you listening?"
A snap of fingers brought him back to reality, his eyes refocusing on the face in front of him.
"Were you talking to me?" he asked absently.
Thomas sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of his nose between his pointer finger and thumb.
"I’m asking if you’ve finished your latest painting." Something clicked in Rafayel's mind, and he gave a nervous smile.
"Ohhh! The painting… yeah, uh…" He looked away, avoiding his manager’s accusing gaze. "It’s done… almost."
"Are you kidding me? The exhibition is in a week!" Thomas’s face turned red with frustration. "Rafayel, you’ve had over a month to finish it."
Rafayel puffed his cheeks in a childish gesture. "It’s not my fault. Inspiration comes and goes, you know. There’s no way to control—"
And there it was.
That same feeling of being watched flooded over him, his blood running cold.
He looked around anxiously, searching for the source of that unblinking gaze.
"Rafayel?" Thomas’s voice snapped him back. "Is something wrong?"
He tried to play it off, swallowing the knot that had formed in his throat.
"It’s nothing," he said, clearing his throat. "Uh… I’ll finish the painting when I get back."
A relieved smile crossed Thomas’s face before he resumed his scolding expression.
"You’d better."
.
Rafayel sighed heavily as he walked back to his studio, the chilly night breeze seeping into his bones.
"I should hurry." He looked at his watch, which read 11:24 PM. "Only I would stay out this late looking for inspiration in my own paintings..."
That moment of peace didn’t last long, as the same feeling of being watched crept over him once again.
Not again…
He picked up his pace, desperate to get home, desperate to escape that awful feeling.
His heart skipped a beat when he heard another set of footsteps behind him. Someone was following him.
Rafayel panicked, his legs moving on their own as he started running, his heart pounding wildly. His mind raced, and his first instinct was to duck into an alley, hoping he’d find more people around.
No way…
It was a dead end.
He spun around, ready to flee, but his blood froze when he saw a figure standing at the mouth of the alley, looking right at him.
"What do you want…?" His voice trembled along with his whole body.
A dark laugh reached his ears as the figure began to approach, each step raising the anxiety and panic building inside him.
The figure stopped in front of him, a pair of eyes locking onto his.
"I want you, Rafayel."
The stalker.
