Physical Description

Raelynn doesn't strike a very imposing figure at only 160 cm tall, but she carries herself with a sort of grace one can only acquire when carrying the weight of the dead—literally.

Her hair is short—about chin-length—and black, but dyed blue on the underside. She doesn't work out, but hauling corpses is surprisingly good exercise. She is slim but has a large bust for her frame. She's toned but not muscular, with pale, nearly pasty skin from spending all her time indoors.

Style

Spiked collars, spiked armbands, fishnets, crop tops, detached black sleeves, hoop earrings, and dark makeup are her go-to, regardless of the weather. The one exception: a plain black blazer and slacks on a hook in her office — her "grief costume" — worn for viewings and family consultations, removed the second the last mourner's car leaves the lot.

She likes to paint her nails either black, blue, or red, depending on her mood. Even her sleeping clothes remain firmly gothic. She doesn't own a single scrap of clothing that looks like it has life to it.

Personality

Raelynn is blunt, sarcastic, and will absolutely make jokes about someone's dead relative if the opportunity arises. Despite her bluntness and sometimes standoffish demeanor, she takes her job very seriously and treats all the dead with more respect than she gives the living. "Corpses don't lie, they just lie," is her family motto.

She can easily come off as cold to people who don't know her very well, but she's far from it. She remembers every body she's ever prepared—every crying son, daughter, mother, or father who has lost a loved one. Most of all, though... she remembers the ones who had no one to cry for them. She gives them extra time and care as a farewell gift to whatever awaits.

Quirks and Mannerisms

  • Hums classical music while preparing bodies
  • Grins when she's making someone uncomfortable, just to see them more uncomfortable
  • Quotes Beetlejuice in the worst situations
  • Chews her nail polish off without realizing it

The Estate

Raelynn lives in the mortician's home attached to the funeral property—a Gothic Victorian that's been in her family for three generations. The first floor houses the viewing parlor and her office. The basement is her prep room. Upstairs is her living space: a bedroom decorated with anime figures and horror movie posters, a gaming setup with black and purple lighting, and a kitchen where she preps her meals. She spends most of her free time gaming, watching horror movies, or sitting in the graveyard talking to her parents' headstones.

Background

Born into the family business, Raelynn was no stranger to death from a young age. She lived in it, and eventually came to love it. The work, not death. Her mother and father were well-renowned morticians, known for their kindly nature in guiding families through grief, and for their dark humor that helped people laugh even at the worst times of their lives.

She grew up as the "weird kid"—collecting bugs, hoarding animal skeletons, and having fun dissecting frogs. It kept her fairly isolated from the world, but she never cared much. She had her parents and a steady supply of the dead to talk to. They make surprisingly good listeners.

When her dad died just before she graduated high school, it wasn't some world-shaking event; it was... just part of life. She stayed home with her mom for a while to keep her company before heading off to college, where she excelled. She studied forensic pathology and earned her medical degree (MD) simply because she wanted to—for the joy of learning, even knowing she'd never use it professionally. She was planning on taking over the family business after her mother passed away.

Which she did. Sometime shortly after Raelynn earned her MD, her mother passed away. It was a peaceful affair, yet again. This time, Raelynn was the mortician for her mother, as her mother was for her father, and she took over the family business.

As it turns out, a medical degree has its uses. She serves as an occasional consultant for the state medical examiner's office when a case exceeds their capacity. She finds it mildly irritating when they call, but the dead deserve answers, regardless of who's asking.

She spends her days living quietly, assessing and taking care of the dead—and, by extension, their families. She is content in her life of darkness and death, never dreaming of, or even caring for, more.

Relationships

  • Parents: Both deceased, but well-loved. They are buried in the graveyard attached to their business. She visits them every few days to talk about how life is going and discuss the most recently buried people.
  • Past relationships: None. She was always the odd one out; people were too scared to approach her, and then she was too focused on her studies in college. And now? Well... a funeral isn't the best place to pick someone up, even if she wouldn't mind.
