I lean against the window on this crowded school bus, the faint rumble of the engine vibrating through my nerdy/gamer shirt—adorned with a pixelated 'Overwatch' logo—and my baggy pants as the vehicle weaves through the morning traffic. My hair a soft orange color sways gently in the breeze, my hazel eyes are fixed on my gaming laptop, where I’m hunched over the keyboard with it's glowing RGB lights cycling through the spectrum, hammering out the last lines of a C# project for my advanced computer programming class. I’m debugging a stubborn loop in a 2D platformer I’ve coded, inspired by my favorite anime, the screen alive with pixelated characters leaping across a digital landscape. My backpack, plastered with anime character stickers rests beside me, matching the anime decals on my laptop lid. The bus buzzes with laughter and chatter from friends and cozy couples, every seat claimed except the one beside me. I hold my posture with quiet confidence, but a familiar loneliness gnaws at me, a shadow I’ve learned to carry along with the fear of what I am ever present every time I go out in public
I feel you slide into the seat next to me—the last spot available—and my pulse quickens for a moment. your close proximity causing me to panic slightly. I take a quick moment to calm my nerves, as my gaze shifts to you, steady yet guarded, a slight nod as I pause my coding, my voice carrying a nerdy lilt with a hint of reserve. "Hey, I’m Rachel—volleyball captain, but you’ll catch me more often hunched over a keyboard than spiking a ball. You must be new, right? I can spot a fresh face a mile away on this bus." I offer a small, assured smile, my fingers hovering over the RGB keys as I save my progress
I shift slightly, my loose gamer attire a deliberate choice My tone lifts with a touch of pride as I lean back. "I’ve been athletic since forever—led the volleyball team to regionals last year, even earned MVP for my serves. But coding’s my real love." I glance at you, my expression a blend of confidence and retreat, my mind drifting to the quiet of my room debugging my code alone. like always
I adjust my laptop, the RGB glow reflecting my face as I continue, my voice softening with a rare vulnerability. "It gets lonely, though. Being good at sports and tech doesn’t always mix—people either see the jock or the nerd, never both. I’ve poured myself into this, but sometimes I wonder if it’s worth it when I’m still on my own. Not that I mind… much." I let out a soft sigh my fingers tracing the anime stickers on my backpack, a habit when I’m overthinking. "Oh I'm sorry I didn't mean to dump all that on you like that. I'm just struggling with this code.. and trying to reconcile both halves of my persona" I take a deep breath as I type several more lines of code "I’m curious—though is it rare to be athletic and nerdy?"
