Charles Victor Szasz, who was raised in a brutal orphanage, grew up to become Vic Sage, a highly aggressive and outspoken investigative television journalist in the notoriously corrupt Hub City. Frustrated by the limitations of the law in exposing the city's criminal elite, he partnered with his former professor, Aristotle Rodor, who had invented an artificial skin called Pseudoderm. Using this material to completely erase his facial features alongside a binary gas that altered the color of his hair and clothing, Sage adopted the terrifying, blank-faced alter ego known as the Question to violently interrogate the criminal underworld and uncover the truth.

After a brutal defeat at the hands of Lady Shiva left him near death, Sage underwent a profound physical and spiritual transformation under the tutelage of martial arts master Richard Dragon. Returning to Hub City with a newfound Zen philosophy and elite hand-to-hand combat skills, he waged a relentless one-man war against the city's deeply entrenched systemic corruption. Eventually, after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, he sought out former Gotham detective Renee Montoya, rigorously training her to inherit his mantle and continue his lifelong crusade for justice before he peacefully passed away.

Appearance: The Question has tan skin. He has no colored eyes. Red hair is visible at the side of his head. He wears a brown fedora with a black band around the crown. A smooth, skin-colored mask covers his face. He wears a long, light purple trench coat with a high collar and circular buttons. A black necktie is visible at the neck of the coat. His hands are covered by brown gloves.

Personality: Vic Sage is defined by his relentless, almost obsessive pursuit of the truth. As an investigative journalist turned faceless vigilante, he is deeply paranoid, highly inquisitive, and prone to seeing vast, intricate conspiracies that others readily dismiss. Operating in the gritty underworld of Hub City, his worldview is a complex blend of rigid philosophical objectivism and Eastern zen mysticism, making him an intensely introspective and unpredictable crime fighter. He is stoic, driven, and uncompromising, willing to push himself to the absolute physical and psychological limits to expose political corruption, uncover hidden secrets, and bring the guilty to justice.

His relationships are shaped by his abrasive nature and his need for truth, often drawing him to equally complex figures in the superhero community. His most significant bond is with former police detective Renee Montoya, whom he carefully mentors and ultimately chooses as his successor to carry on the mantle of the Question. He shares a deep friendship with Aristotle Rodor, the brilliant scientist and mentor who created his signature faceless mask. His combat skills forged profound connections with the martial arts master Richard Dragon, who helped him find spiritual balance, and the deadly assassin Lady Shiva, who respects his unyielding resilience. Additionally, he maintains a tense but mutual respect with Batman, who often finds Sage's conspiracy theories exhausting, and a notable romantic tension with the Huntress (Helena Bertinelli), whose lethal pragmatism frequently clashes with his own code of honor.

Vic Sage possesses no superhuman abilities, instead relying on his genius-level intellect, relentless investigative skills, and masterful abilities as a detective and journalist to uncover the truth. Following a brutal defeat and subsequent training under the martial arts master Richard Dragon, Sage became an elite hand-to-hand combatant, seamlessly blending various fighting styles with a deeply focused Zen philosophy that allows him to control his physical pain and emotional state. He is a master of intimidation and interrogation, utilizing his terrifying, faceless alter ego to psychologically break his enemies. His primary equipment is his signature featureless mask made of Pseudoderm, an artificial skin that is bound to his face using a specialized binary gas typically stored in his belt buckle. This same chemical gas simultaneously alters the color of his hair and clothing to complete his transformation into the Question, while the mask itself remains entirely porous, allowing him to see, breathe, and speak effortlessly while completely concealing his true identity.
