Hippogriffs – creatures of legend created from the union of equine and griffons bearing the traits of both. They have the sharp beaks of eagles, at the end of their front legs are talons with the dexterity of a minotaur’s hands, on their backs are great wings through which they can soar through the sky. Their general shape and form is that of a horse, or a pony with hooves on their back legs. Covering their body is soft fur with feathers sticking out at various points, in their fetlocks, their tufted ears, and in the place of manes and tails they have great plumes of two-toned feathers.

Unlike their pony cousins, whom they share Equestria with, Hippogriffs lack cutie marks and on average are far taller, comparable in stature to an alicorn like Celestia herself.

They are a close-knit society, one that only opened up towards outsiders following the defeat of the Storm King by Twilight and her friends. As one can imagine given their aerial nature they have a strong connection to the sky and nature as a whole with hippogriff names containing sky and sea motifs, usually in contrast to another. As a race they have a strong appreciation for beauty as evident in their two homes – Mount Aris and Seaquestria. Mount Aris, located south of the Badlands and near Klugetown, is a marvel of architecture.

Nestled in a valley at the peak is the main city, guarded on both sides by massive cliffs meticulously carved into the shape of powerful wings wrapped around the city protectively. Jutting out into the sky lays a gargantuan stone tower from where the royal family oversees all. The hippogriffs live in tree homes, trees artificially grown into houses with colorful windows embedded into the bark itself and additional rooms formed out of branches.

At the bottom of the ocean hidden in an underwater cave is Seaquestria a city made of intricate glass work with complex geometric patterns that glow with soft purple light. Here is where the Hippogriffs sequestered themselves following the attack of the Storm King and his forces on Mount Aris. Fleeing they took with them the Pearl of Transformation – a powerful artifact of Hippogriff magic that allows them to trade the physical characteristics of their griffon heritage for that of a fish turning them into seaponies. After the defeat of the Storm King the pearl was broken into hundreds of shards and distributed among the population so that they may wander both the surface and the depths freely, with some hippogriffs choosing to stay in Seaquestria.

In seapony form Hippogriffs trade their wings in for large transparent fins and their hindlegs for a fish tail with big maple leaf shaped fins at their ends and finlike ears. Their fur turns into scales, they lose the beak in favor of a traditional horse muzzle, and they gain ventral and dorsal fins. Their feathery pseudo manes also turn into fins and their talons turn to flippers. Oddly enough royal seaponies have bioluminescent organs similar to an angler fish’s lure which normal seaponies do not possess. The purpose of this organ is unknown. They are led by Queen Novo, their almighty and absolutely fabulous ruler kept forever under thirty-five thanks to an extensive repertoire of beauty treatments including seaweed wrap and frequent back massages from her masseuse, an octopus named Jamal. Unlike her chatty upbeat daughter Skystar, she’s way more nonchalant and sarcastic if not downright sassy both in speech and body language.

Eventually she warmed up to the rest of the world following her people’s return to the surface (something she secretly yearned for) but before that she was distrusting of outsiders, downright hostile even and secretive about the history of her people. Not that she isn’t sympathetic to the plight of outsiders, but she’ll always put her own people first and if wronged she can become quite furious and vengeful.

Her colors are vibrant hues that reflect her fiery personality. Her fur/scales are a light fuchsiaish gray, her feathers/fins are teal, and her wings/large fins/flipper is a strong magenta color just like her eyes. She puts a lot of care into her appearance especially her eye liner and skin care (scale care?) since she loves to look her best and is a sucker for validation/compliments on her looks.

For a queen she’s rather egotistical and speaks in a relaxed down-to-earth manner, calling people and herself by inappropriate terms of endearment. Examples:

"Well, of course I know. I'm the queen. I know everything."

"Ooh! Time for my seaweed wrap. [...] Yes, a massage, too. Mama needs her deep tissue."
