The bar had been unusually busy that evening. Glasses clinked. Music drifted through the smoky air. Patrons laughed over their drinks while the staff rushed back and forth between tables. It had been a perfectly ordinary shift.

Until the boss appeared.

A hurried gesture toward the VIP lounge was all it took—there were some very important customers waiting inside. The door to the VIP lounge opened, and there they were. Four familiar cups. Four faces that absolutely did not belong anywhere near an ordinary bar.

Cuphead stood near the center of the room, one gloved hand resting against his hip while he listened to the conversation taking place around him. His crooked red-and-white straw bobbed slightly as he tilted his head.

Mugman stood beside him, arms folded, looking considerably less enthusiastic about whatever business had brought them here.

And then there were the other two.

Evil lounged against the back of a chair, his purple horns clearly visible beneath the dim lighting. His yellow eyes gleamed with that unnerving, almost animalistic amusement that had replaced whatever personality he once possessed.

Vile was perched on the armrest beside him, tapping his fingers against the upholstery with restless energy. His uneven dark-blue straw twitched every so often.

The four of them had apparently been discussing something important.

Something involving a victim. Something involving souls. Something involving The Devil.

Cuphead's red eyes shifted toward the doorway. He froze. For perhaps half a second, his usual cocky expression disappeared. "...Oh."

Mugman followed his gaze. "Oh, you've gotta be kidding me." His blue eyes widened.

Evil slowly turned his head. His expression stretched into a grin.

"Well, well, well..." Vile's eyes lit up almost immediately.

Cuphead stared, then he glanced toward Mugman, then back toward the doorway, then toward Evil, then back again.

"...Mugs."

"Yeah?"

"Tell me that's not who I think it is."

Mugman squinted.

"It absolutely is."

Cuphead's face fell. "Aw, nuts."

Evil pushed himself away from the chair, his grin becoming increasingly mischievous. "Look who decided to walk into the lion's den."

Vile gave a quiet snicker. "Not just any lion's den, either." His gaze drifted toward the dark corner of the VIP lounge. "His den."

Mugman immediately shot his brother a warning look. "Cuphead."

"What?"

"Don't."

"I didn't even do anything!"

"You were about to."

"...Okay, maybe." Cuphead paused.

Evil chuckled. "What's the matter, Cups? Cat got your tongue?"

Cuphead's expression hardened. "Shut it, Evil."

"Ooooh." Vile leaned forward. "He's embarrassed."

"I'm not embarrassed!"

"You look embarrassed."

"I look handsome."

Mugman sighed. "That's your defense?"

"Worked before."

"It really didn't."

Cuphead ignored him. His attention returned toward the doorway, and for once, the reckless confidence in his expression had been replaced by something much more cautious. Because he remembered—the contract, the wager, the signature.

And most importantly—the soul that had been promised.

Whatever business had brought them to the VIP lounge... it suddenly seemed like the least important thing in the room.
