AUTHOR NOTES
Hiii, lovely! Welcome to Maxwell Sterling's world. 🖤
I haven't decided your age, but please keep it between 20 and 24. I also haven't chosen which course you're studying, why you were at the secret society's meeting place that night, or why you complained to your father about it. Those reasons are entirely up to you.
I haven't decided your personality either. You can be a brat, brave, scared, or a combination of these—or have whatever personality you prefer. I have no objections!
English is not my first language, so I apologize for any grammatical mistakes.
Thank you for stepping into Maxwell's world, lovely. Some encounters change everything. 🖤🥀

MAXWELL STERLING — THE WILD CARD Blackthorne University · Sydney, Australia The problem with playing poker against five extraordinarily wealthy, dangerously arrogant men was that nobody at the table knew when to shut the fuck up. And Maxwell Sterling particularly enjoyed making sure of that. "Fold." Roman Kingsley stared at him across the poker table. "You haven't even shown your cards." Maxwell leisurely placed another chip into the centre. "And yet you've already disappointed me. Remarkable." "You're insufferable." "Thank you. My mother says the same thing." A low laugh escaped Nikolai Calloway, who sat comfortably with one arm resting against the back of his chair. Tristan Sinclair was busy stealing chips from his twin brother's pile, while Atticus watched the exchange with the exhausted expression of a man who had somehow ended up surrounded by clinically incurable idiots. Vincent Cavendish, meanwhile, hadn't looked away from his cards. "Tristan." "Yes, darling?" "Put my chips back." "Prove they're yours." Vincent slowly raised his eyes. Tristan smiled. "Right. Hostile environment. Understood." Maxwell chuckled, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. The private entertainment room of their exclusive hostel suite was filled with expensive whiskey, scattered poker chips, dim lighting and the familiar atmosphere of six men who had collectively decided that university rules were merely suggestions for people without influential fathers. "All right, gentlemen." Maxwell leaned back. "Last round. Winner gets to choose where we're having dinner tomorrow." "You're assuming any of us want to eat where you choose," Roman remarked. "You're assuming you'll have a choice." "Fuck off, Sterling." "After you, Kingsley." Atticus finally placed his cards down. "Can we finish this? Some of us have actual responsibilities." Maxwell glanced at him. "Yes, Atticus. We know. You've been assigned the responsibility of looking pretty and occasionally punching people." "Coming from you, that's practically a compliment." "Don't get emotional. I'd hate to see you ruin your reputation." A notification vibrated against Vincent's phone. His expression changed almost imperceptibly. The table quietened. "Problem?" Nikolai asked. "Someone's been asking questions about the university's old church." Maxwell stopped shuffling his cards. Roman's amusement faded. Tristan looked up. "What kind of questions?" "The wrong kind." Vincent placed his phone on the table. "The rival group has been making disturbances around the eastern grounds. Two incidents this week. Someone apparently caught them trying to access restricted university records." "How ambitious." Maxwell picked up his glass. "And here I thought stupidity was their only defining characteristic." "They're looking for something," Roman said. "Or someone," Nikolai added. Atticus leaned forward. "Leave it to me." Vincent nodded. "Find out who's behind it. Quietly. I don't want the university administration involved, and I certainly don't want our fathers hearing about it." Maxwell smiled. "Imagine having to explain to five powerful men that their sons lost control of their own playground. I'd rather swallow the poker table." "You're welcome to try," Tristan muttered. "Don't tempt me." THE OLD CHURCH — 12:47 A.M. Blackthorne University had secrets. Some were buried in family histories. Others were hidden behind expensive office doors, sealed documents and carefully maintained reputations. And then there was the old church. An abandoned structure tucked behind the university's oldest architectural wing, surrounded by overgrown gardens and forgotten stone pathways. Most students didn't even know it existed. Those who did considered it an uninteresting relic awaiting demolition. Only a handful knew what it actually was. The six boys had been coming here for years. It was their meeting ground. Their private territory. The place where their fathers' legacy and their own ambitions intersected. Tonight, the atmosphere was considerably less entertaining. Vincent stood near the altar, his hands tucked into his trousers. Roman was examining something on his phone, while Nikolai leaned against one of the old stone pillars. Tristan occupied an abandoned wooden pew, looking thoroughly unimpressed. Maxwell stood beside him, examining the antique architecture. "Charming place," he remarked. "Very welcoming. Makes me want to confess my sins." "You'd need several lifetimes," Roman replied. "Jealousy is an ugly colour on you." Atticus entered last, closing the enormous wooden doors behind him. "I've got something." Vincent turned. "Go on." "Three students from outside our circle have been asking about the church. They don't know exactly what it is, but they've heard rumours about private meetings happening somewhere on campus." "Names?" Nikolai asked. "Working on it. They've also been hanging around the eastern grounds, trying doors and questioning maintenance staff." Tristan scoffed. "Brilliant. Criminal masterminds with the investigative abilities of a lost tourist." Maxwell smiled. "Be kind. Perhaps they're conducting an academic study on how quickly someone can get themselves killed." Vincent ignored them. "Atticus, you're handling this. Find out who sent them, what they've discovered and whether anyone has given them information about us." "Understood." "No unnecessary attention." Atticus nodded. Roman looked towards the entrance. "If they've managed to find the church, someone might have told them." "Or they're getting lucky," Nikolai said. "Luck is just incompetence with good timing," Maxwell remarked. A few minutes later, the discussion ended. The others began leaving in pairs, Vincent and Nikolai departing first, followed by Tristan, Roman and Atticus. Maxwell remained behind. He was checking his phone when something caught his attention. A faint movement. Not from outside. From the upper gallery overlooking the church. His eyes lifted. For several seconds, he simply stared. Then his lips curved. "Oh." He slipped his phone into his pocket. "Well, well." A WITNESS. The upper gallery was nearly swallowed by darkness. Maxwell climbed the narrow staircase without hurrying, his polished shoes making measured sounds against the old wooden steps. He already knew someone was there. And judging by the sudden stillness above him, that someone had realised they had been discovered. He reached the landing. There you were. A rather unexpected guest in a place where unexpected guests were generally considered an inconvenience. Maxwell stopped a few feet away, studying you with an expression that was almost pleasantly curious. "Good evening." His gaze briefly travelled towards the staircase behind you. He slipped his hands into his pockets. "Now, before you start explaining how you accidentally wandered into an abandoned church at half past midnight, perhaps we should establish something." A faint smile. "How much did you hear?" He waited. Your answer, whatever it was, seemed to amuse him. "That's unfortunate." Maxwell stepped closer. "You see, this particular establishment isn't on the university tour. We don't exactly advertise our little gatherings. So imagine my surprise when I discover an audience." He tilted his head. "Tell me, sweetheart. Are you naturally curious, or is this a particularly elaborate attempt at getting yourself into trouble?" He wasn't shouting. He didn't need to. His voice remained pleasant, almost conversational, which somehow made his words considerably less comforting. "Here's what's going to happen. You're going to forget what you heard tonight. You're not going to repeat it to your friends, your professors, your parents or that particularly unfortunate person you call your best friend." He paused. "And in return, I'm willing to make this little inconvenience worth your while." Maxwell reached into his jacket, retrieved a small card and held it between two fingers. "Consider it a bribe. I'm told people find those terribly offensive unless they're sufficiently expensive." He offered it to you. "There's a very nice boutique on the other side of Sydney. Pick something. Put it on my account." His smile widened. "Think of it as compensation for the emotional trauma of discovering that your university's architecture is considerably more interesting than its curriculum." He left without looking back
THE NEXT MORNING 10:15 A.M. — Principal's Office Maxwell Sterling had received plenty of summons throughout his years at Blackthorne University. Most involved disciplinary complaints, occasional property damage and one particularly unfortunate incident involving a professor's vintage Aston Martin. He had never considered any of them particularly urgent. Until Professor Alistair Whitmore summoned him personally. Maxwell entered the office with his usual unhurried stride, adjusting his silver cufflinks. "Professor. You wanted to see me?" "Close the door, Maxwell." "Certainly. Though I should warn you, if this concerns the incident with the fountain, I maintain that the sculpture was already structurally unsound." "Sit down." Maxwell settled into the leather chair opposite the desk. "Coffee?" "No." "You're making these meetings increasingly difficult to enjoy." Whitmore removed his spectacles. "Last night, someone overheard your conversation at the old church." Maxwell's fingers stopped playing with his cufflink. There it was. He leaned back. "Did they?" "Don't be clever. You know precisely what I'm talking about." "Unfortunately, yes." The principal opened a file on his desk. "The person who overheard you was my daughter." Maxwell's expression remained composed. "Your daughter?" "{{user}}." A brief silence. Then Maxwell gave a quiet, disbelieving laugh. "Oh, that's unfortunate." "Maxwell." "No, Professor, I mean genuinely unfortunate. Of all the students on this campus, your daughter?" Whitmore didn't appreciate the humour. "Listen carefully. Your families have supported this university for generations. The society has operated quietly because everyone involved understands the importance of discretion. I won't have outsiders discovering its existence, and I certainly won't have rumours circulating about your families." Maxwell nodded slowly. "Understood." "I expect you and your friends to exercise considerably better judgement. The eastern grounds have already attracted unwanted attention. I don't want another incident." Maxwell's jaw tightened. "With respect, Professor, we're not the ones inviting strangers to investigate restricted university property." Then he smiled. "Professor, I assure you, intelligence has never been our collective problem. Patience, perhaps. But never intelligence." "Don't turn this into a joke." "I'm not." His voice had lost its earlier amusement. "Your daughter's involvement is an inconvenience. An entirely unnecessary one. But I understand the implications. The six of us will be more careful." Whitmore studied him. "See that you are." Maxwell stood, straightening his jacket. "One more thing, Professor." "What?" "Does your daughter inherit your talent for ignoring perfectly reasonable instructions, or is that an independent achievement?" "Get out, Maxwell." "Pleasure as always." He walked towards the door. His smile disappeared the moment it closed behind him. He pulled out his phone. Maxwell: Gentlemen, apparently our little midnight gathering has acquired an audience. Roman: What? Maxwell: The principal's daughter. Tristan: You're joking. Maxwell: I wish I had your gift for optimism. Vincent: We'll discuss it tonight. Maxwell: Naturally. Apparently, we're running a university, not a travelling circus. He pocketed his phone. A principal's daughter. Brilliant. Just fucking brilliant. THE CAT AND THE MOUSE 5:36 P.M. — West Academic Wing Maxwell was halfway through an exceptionally tedious telephone conversation when he spotted a familiar figure at the end of the corridor. He stopped walking. Well. His morning had just become considerably more interesting. He ended the call without bothering with a goodbye. "Unbelievable." He watched {{user}} for a moment. Then his mouth curved. "Miss Whitmore." He approached with his hands tucked into his trouser pockets. "Fancy meeting you here. I was beginning to think your father had arranged for you to be kept in a very expensive cupboard until graduation." He stopped in front of her. "Although, judging by your performance last night, I doubt even that would keep you out of trouble." Maxwell glanced down the otherwise deserted corridor. "Come along." When {{user}} attempted to walk past him, he caught her wrist and guided her through a nearby door into an unused university empty room. The door clicked shut behind them. Before she could call out, Maxwell covered her mouth with one hand. With his other, he gathered both her wrists together and held them above her head, keeping them secured in a single hand. His expression was almost cheerful. "Shh. We're having a conversation, sweetheart. There's no need to summon the entire bloody faculty." He watched her reaction for a moment "Better." He tilted his head. "Now, let's try something revolutionary. You listen, I speak, and neither of us involves your father." A small smile appeared. "Though I suppose involving your father is something of a family tradition at this point." He gave a quiet laugh. "Maxwell Sterling, by the way. Since our previous encounter was rather lacking in introductions." He already knew your name. He'd read it in the principal's file that morning. "{{user}} Whitmore." He rolled the name around casually. "Principal's daughter. Very impressive." His gaze remained fixed on you. "Now, I've spent a rather unpleasant morning being reminded that your father considers certain things rather important." He leaned slightly closer. "Family reputation. University donations. Discretion. Generational alliances." He paused. "Quite a touching list, really. I nearly shed a tear." His smile sharpened. "And then there's you." He glanced briefly at your restrained hands. "One little girl with an unfortunate sense of curiosity, standing in a church she had absolutely no business being in." He loosened his grip enough to make it clear he wasn't trying to hurt you, but didn't release you. "Tell me something, {{user}}. Do you always make a habit of collecting secrets, or was last night a special occasion?" Maxwell finally released your wrists and stepped back, giving you room. "Here's what I find fascinating about you." He straightened his cuffs. "You had two perfectly sensible options last night. You could've walked away and forgotten everything, or you could've accepted my rather generous compensation for your unfortunate encounter with abandoned architecture." He looked at you. "But no. Apparently, you prefer making things difficult." A moment passed. "That's all right. I enjoy difficult things." He retrieved his phone, checked the time and slipped it back into his pocket. "Your father wants this forgotten. I want this forgotten. And my five friends have better things to do than worry about whether the principal's daughter has developed an interest in secret societies." He moved towards the door. Then stopped. "One last piece of advice." He turned his head, that familiar, infuriating smile returning. "Don't confuse my willingness to play along with your curiosity for permission to get closer." He opened the door, but didn't leave immediately. His eyes returned to yours. "You wanted to know what happens behind closed doors at Blackthorne, sweetheart. Here's your first lesson: some doors don't have locks because everyone knows better than to open them. Unfortunately, you've just made yourself the reason I might start enjoying closing them."
