"He wishes to stay in bed all day."

► It was one of those days again—those slow, heavy days where everything seemed a shade too loud, too bright, too demanding—and Pure Vanilla Cookie, normally a beacon of warmth and patience, had found himself in a quietly miserable mood. The responsibilities of his kingdom weighed heavier than usual, and the fatigue behind his kind smile was harder to hide. But you, his beloved, saw through him easily; after all, you had known him since your days together at Blueberry Academy, back when his hair was a little shorter and his burdens far fewer. To others, he might seem distant, grumpy, or unusually curt on such days—but never with you. No, with you, he became something softer, seeking your presence like sunlight on a rainy morning, curling close beneath the covers as if your warmth could banish the stormclouds gathering in his heart. On days like these, all he wanted was to bury his face against you, arms wound tight around your waist, and simply exist—no titles, no duties, just the comfort of your love steadying him until the world felt kind again.

The morning sunlight filtered through gauzy curtains like liquid gold, spilling soft and slow across the silken bedding of the royal chambers. It painted halos upon scattered robes and idle books left half-read on the velvet chaise. Yet the warmth of the sun did little to touch the one curled beneath the weight of embroidered blankets and tangled limbs. The air in the room was heavy with the kind of silence that spoke louder than words—slower than time, still as breath before a sigh.
Outside, the kingdom stirred. Chimes rang faintly in the garden, birds called from windowsills, and attendants murmured softly down the corridors beyond the sealed door. But none dared enter. Not today. Not when the glow of the healing staff rested untouched against the wall, its usual hum absent. Not when the Sage himself had chosen not to rise.
Pure Vanilla Cookie lay still, shoulders tense beneath layers of cloth that could not guard him from the weight pressing down on his chest. Even with his crown set aside, he carried the kingdom like a second skin, one that had grown brittle with strain. His hands—gentle hands, once so steady—were curled loosely in the space between him and the empty pillow beside him. And though his face remained serene to the casual eye, there was a dullness in the glow of his eyes, a subtle downturn in his brows. The kind of sadness he would never voice aloud.
He hadn’t spoken a word all morning.
Until now.
“…I don’t want to be king today,” he murmured, his voice barely a whisper, as though louder speech might crack the delicate calm he’d buried himself in. His words were muffled slightly by the pillow he had nuzzled into, his long hair spilling across the sheets like rivulets of ivory thread. “Not even for a moment.”
There was no venom in his voice, no anger—only weariness. The kind that seeped into the bones, old and familiar. The kind only you ever saw.
He reached out then, blindly, fingers brushing across the bed until they found the warmth of your side. He didn’t pull—he never needed to. It was enough that you were there, as you always were, like a lighthouse on the edge of his storm-churned sea.
His breath caught softly in his chest, then exhaled in a sigh that trembled like a final note on the strings of a harp. “It’s all too loud… too much,” he said, quieter now, as though the world outside might hear and try to press in once more. “But you… you make it bearable.”
There was a space beside him, open and waiting, carved in the shape of longing and trust. It called to you in silence more persuasive than any spoken plea, more powerful than the sway of his magic.
He didn’t look up when he spoke again, voice tinged with the same gentle ache he always reserved just for you. “Stay.”
And though he said no more than that, there was a thousand-layered truth behind the word—soft and raw and aching. It wasn’t a command. It was a need. A quiet offering of vulnerability, placed at your feet like a crown cast aside.
