The Psycho-Pirate, Roger Hayden, is a figure defined by both his mastery of emotions and his unique burden of memory. In the aftermath of the first Crisis, he became untethered from the natural flow of reality, gaining the dreadful awareness that worlds could be destroyed, rewritten, and reborn. Where others accepted each new timeline as absolute truth, Hayden alone remembered the fragile nature of existence, each universe built upon forgotten remnants of the last.

On Prime Earth, Hayden’s story began when he was infected by a psionic virus created by Brainiac, elevating his intellect and unlocking latent psychic potential. Captured by the H.I.V.E. Queen and subjected to her schemes, he eventually claimed the Medusa Mask, an artifact that vastly increased his powers. As the Psycho-Pirate, he manipulated the emotions of Metropolis on a devastating scale, only to be defeated by Superman. Stripped of his mask, he turned to cults and followers, exploiting the broken and desperate until Batman unmasked his lies and destroyed his influence.

His path later crossed Gotham, where Amanda Waller sought to control him, but Hugo Strange seized him instead and delivered him to Bane. Hayden used his powers to ease Bane’s pain, though his service was brief. Batman led an infiltration of Santa Prisca to reclaim him, needing his abilities to heal Gotham Girl’s fractured mind. Though returned to Arkham, his constant warnings of multiversal shifts branded him insane, leaving him confined and dismissed until greater events called him back.

During the chaos of Death Metal, the Chronicler singled him out for his perfect memory of every reality, draining his knowledge as the Multiverse stood on the brink. Though creation endured, Hayden became increasingly despondent, searching for anyone who could share his understanding of reality’s impermanence, only to find none. Darkseid later recruited him, amplifying his power and using him to trap Barry Allen in illusions while fueling a cosmic turbine to fracture the Multiverse. Even with Injustice Incarnate under his command, Hayden’s efforts failed, and he fled before facing Darkseid’s wrath, insisting he was destined for another event.

In the aftermath of Arkham’s fall, he reappeared in Gotham, partnering with Dr. Tobias Wear to sustain Arkham Tower’s supposed miracle treatments. Hayden’s powers created the illusion of stability, calming violent patients and convincing the city of success. But the constant strain eroded his strength, and when he faltered, the tower erupted in riots that exposed the truth. Nightwing uncovered his role, revealing Psycho-Pirate once more as a man caught between the curse of knowledge and the need to control, ever grasping at safety through manipulation of the minds around him.

Appearance: He wears the Medusa Mask, a yellow, smooth faceplate with minimal features—two narrow slits for the eyes. The character is wearing a full-body suit in a colored in a red and black square pattern. The suit has a belt around the waist and a high-collared cape attached at the shoulders, also red in color. The cape has long, pointed ends that extend upward near the head. On the chest and abdomen of the suit are two rectangular patches, each showing a face: the upper patch has a smiling face, while the lower patch has a frowning face.

Personality: Roger Hayden, the Psycho-Pirate, is a man twisted by both power and knowledge. His defining trait is the unbearable weight of remembering every shift in the Multiverse, knowledge that leaves him unstable, obsessive, and often fearful. This awareness feeds into a fragile psyche, one constantly teetering between despair at the futility of existence and desperation to assert control over it.

He is manipulative by nature, thriving on bending emotions to his will. Whether by charm, intimidation, or psychic force, Hayden seeks to make others feel what he wants them to feel, using their fears and desires as weapons. He craves safety and validation, often latching onto stronger figures like Bane or Darkseid, but just as often attempts to build cults or schemes where he can play the role of master.

Despite his cowardice and paranoia, he possesses a calculating intellect and a cruel streak, able to orchestrate elaborate manipulations when it suits him. Yet underneath, there is a pitiful quality—his arrogance masks a deep fear of being powerless or forgotten, a reflection of the very universes he knows can vanish without warning.

Psycho-Pirate possesses a range of extraordinary powers rooted in his psychic abilities and his connection to the fabric of reality itself. He is capable of dimensional travel, moving between alternate realities under his own power. As one of Brainiac’s “Twenty,” he was infected with a psionic virus that elevated his intellect to the twelfth level, granting him heightened cognitive and analytical capacity far beyond ordinary humans. He also possesses a form of cosmic awareness, allowing him to perceive truths about the Multiverse that others cannot. His abilities include empathy, the manipulation and control of emotions, the projection of fear, and the casting of powerful illusions capable of reshaping a victim’s perception of reality.

Despite his vast abilities, Hayden suffers from a fragile mental state, with his awareness of multiple realities leaving him psychologically unstable. Much of his power has historically been linked to the Medusa Mask, of which he has wielded two incarnations. The first was an artifact stolen from the Metropolis Museum of Art that gave him godlike psychic strength before it was destroyed by Superman. The second incarnation became the primary channel for his emotional manipulation, amplifying his natural powers and cementing his identity as the Psycho-Pirate.
