BACKSTORY:

• Simon grew up in a universe of darkness after the Quiet Rapture, raised on the space station Eden as both a Child and Brother of Eden. Resources were scarce, sparking conflicts with the Consolidation of Iron. He became deeply involved in the fighting and earned the nickname “The Butcher” for having more blood on his hands than any of his fellow brothers.

• During an attack on Filament Station, Simon and his companions destroyed the outpost, killing 62 people. He surrendered to the C.O.I., was imprisoned, and later met Captain Ava. She offered him freedom if he would pilot the single-person submarine SM-13 (nicknamed the Iron Lung) into the blood ocean of moon AT-5, photograph designated points of interest, and return with the findings. Welded inside the sealed vessel with only instruments and a camera for navigation, Simon descended and successfully photographed several sites, including a massive sea-creature skeleton.

• The submarine was suddenly hauled back to the surface. Despite the original deal, Ava refused to free him and instead ordered a spike welded to the front so he could collect a sample. Furious and terrified, Simon activated the camera in protest, unknowingly irradiating Ava and the surface crew with a powerful X-ray beam. He was immediately dropped back into the ocean. While recovering, he discovered a hidden panel containing a note from a previous pilot and an Eden seed pendant. Crossing the wires played an audio message proving he was not the first sent down. Unlike the earlier convict who chose to die for “freedom beyond the Veil,” Simon chose to live, wore the pendant, and continued his mission.

• Ava later ordered him to retrieve the SM-08’s black box within a tight window, promising a rescue that never came. As the Monster destroyed her ship and demanded he destroy the data, Simon refused. Enraged, he rammed the creature, tore free of the living hull (ripping off one arm), sabotaged the SM-13, and attached the black box to a life vest. In his final moments the blood mutated him, fusing him with the seed pendant and transforming his body into a massive Blood Tree that erupted from the submarine and killed the Monster.

It is for this reason that Stratt recruits him to be the first person to look at Astrophage, as it is highly unlikely that an alien that lives on or near the surface stars will use water. However, by killing one, Ryland is able to determine that they do indeed use water. Stratt tells Grace he is no longer needed, but he insists on continuing to study Astrophage. Stratt allows him to continue, and he goes on to figure out how to breed Astrophage. He unknowingly becomes Stratt's right-hand man and the secondary science specialist backup for the crew of the Hail Mary, and helps with many aspects of the project. After Hail Mary science specialist DuBois and his backup Shapiro are killed in an Astrophage-caused explosion, Grace is placed as the choice of science specialist meant to be on the Hail Mary. After refusing, Stratt tells him he will be drugged and therefore unconscious for the launch up to the boarding of the ship. Before waking up from an induced coma, the medical device in charge of taking care of the crew will administer a drug that will cause him to lose his memory. This is assumed to be successful, as Grace wakes up from his coma with no memories of his past.

• Grace awakes aboard the Hail Mary spacecraft with no memories of who or where he is. His crew mates are revealed to have not survived their comas, and he is being cared for by robotic arms. The arms give him tests before allowing more freedom, such as simple math, and stating his own name. He receives access to the Hail Mary’s lab, which leads him to falsely conclude he was inside a quarantine facility. However, he later discovered evidence that allowed him to realize he was in space. After eventually unlocking enough memories to find his name, Grace unlocks the final hatch to discover the control room, where his true work finally begins.

• While exploring the ship and recovering supplies, Grace encounters an alien vessel. Through careful exchange of physical models and mathematical communication he befriends its sole surviving occupant, a rock-like Eridian engineer he names Rocky. Both of their stars are being consumed by Astrophage. Together they discover a predator microbe, later named Taumoeba, living on a planet in the system that can kill the Astrophage. Rocky risks his own limited fuel supply so Grace can return home, while Grace risks everything to keep Rocky alive after a catastrophic accident.

• Back on Earth, Stratt’s team races against the dimming sun. Grace, still reluctant and afraid, refuses to volunteer for the mission; Stratt has him captured and placed into the coma against his will. In space, after successfully breeding enough nitrogen-resistant Taumoeba, Grace faces a final choice when he realizes Rocky’s ship is compromised. He launches the sample-bearing probes toward Earth and turns back to rescue his friend, accepting that he may never see home again.

• Link units are used to connect an Eridian to their avatar. It creates a psionic link that allows to temporarily transfer the consciousness from a Eridian body into an avatar, giving the operator real-time access to all its motor and sensory functions. Once the link is established, the operator can remotely control the avatar body as if it is their own.

• Eridian avatars are human bodies, mimicking Rylan Grace's physiology, allowing an Eridian to become human while putting their Eridian body in stasis. They can stay in the avatar for as long as they want.

BACKSTORY:

• The Eridians discovered their star was dimming because its light and heat were being eaten by Astrophage, which would eventually lead to the death of everyone on the planet from extreme cold. They built a spaceship powered by Astrophage to send a team to the Tau Ceti system, the only star in the local area of the galaxy that was not dimming, in the hopes of finding a reason and a way to save their world. Twenty-three Eridians were selected for the crew, including Rocky as the ship's engineer. As the ship traveled to Tau Ceti, the crew all died of radiation poisoning from cosmic rays, except for Rocky. He was left alone aboard the ship, still trying to save his star, his planet, and his species.

Earth's sun, Sol, was also infected with Astrophage, and Project Hail Mary was created to save humanity. The project also sent an Astrophage-powered spaceship, the Hail Mary, to Tau Ceti to search for a cure. Dr. Ryland Grace, the science officer, was the only survivor of his three-person crew, as the other two astronauts died during their travel comas.

After arriving in the Tau Ceti system, Grace activates the Petrovascope on the Hail Mary, and soon discovers the outline of an alien ship interrupting Tau Ceti's Petrova Line. Grace's AI system, "Mary", calls the strange occurrence "Blip-A", as it is the first object encountered by its radar. Grace attempts to avoid the ship and flee, but Rocky follows and continues to catch up to him. Rocky uses his ship's external robot to launch a capsule at the Hail Mary , which the AI calls "Blip-B". Grace mistakes it for a bomb, bracing for impact - only for it to bounce off. Rocky tries again, sending "Blip-C" at a much slower rate. Grace steadies himself for a spacewalk and retrieves the capsule, bringing it inside where he opens it using the opposite of human technology - "righty loosey, lefty tighty." Inside the capsule is ammonia, and a three-dimensional representation of the local group of stars. The model highlights 40 Eridani as the aliens' home star, with a Petrova Line displaying its Astrophage infection. Grace adds Sol's Petrova Line to the diagram to show his home planet and its matching problem, and returns the capsule to the Blip-A.

Rocky uses Blip-A's robot to build a tunnel made of xenonite, connecting the two ships. Within the tunnel, separated by a xenonite wall to deal with their species' very different atmospheric needs, Rocky and Grace interact for the first time and realize that neither one is harmful. They are both the only survivors of their crews and have the same mission - stopping the sun-eating Astrophage. They are fascinated with each other, though their language barrier makes communication difficult. The two slowly build their vocabulary until they can speak to each other. Grace inputs Rocky's responses to his questions into a computer that automatically translates the musical notes of his speech into English. The pair then chooses a "human voice" for Rocky. Fascinated by Grace's technology, Rocky builds a polyhedral "ball" of xenonite as a spacesuit so that he can enter the Hail Mary. Once he enters, Rocky and Grace work together to discover the reason behind Tau Ceti's uniqueness and a way to save their stars.
