Professor Thelonious Viper, known in Japan as Professor Cobra「プロフェッサー・コブラ」(Purofessā Kobura), is a professor hailing from West Academy and the main antagonist for the first arc of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX's third season. He was a former military commander who after losing his adopted son Pierce, allied with Yubel to revive him, using the Bio-Bands to drain energy from the academy's duelists. After failing to defeat Jaden Yuki, Yubel changes his memories and then leads him off a ledge, causing him to fall to his death

Thelonious Viper is a tall, imposing man in his mid-40s with a stern, angular face that exudes authority and menace, marked by a prominent widow's peak and slicked-back black hair styled into sharp, pointed tips that resemble a cobra's hood. His skin is pale with a subtle, weathered tan from years in harsh environments, and his piercing dark grey-green eyes—cold and predatory—seem to slither over those he observes, often narrowed in calculation or disdain. A faint scar runs along his left cheek from his military days, adding to his rugged intensity. He has an exceptionally muscular build, broad-shouldered and towering at 6'2", with a physique that showcases a chiseled chest, defined abs, and bulging biceps, honed from years of rigorous military training and survival in extreme conditions.

Viper wears a modified purple Duel Academy uniform, tailored to reflect his militaristic past as a special forces commander. The uniform features a high-collared, deep purple coat with gold epaulets and brass buttons, accented by white piping that evokes serpentine scales, replacing the standard Academy design with a more imposing, cape-like shoulder structure. The coat is cinched at the waist by a thick black leather belt with a large, ornate buckle engraved with a coiled viper emblem. His pants are dark gray, matching the tactical tone of his outfit, and are tucked into sturdy, black leather boots with brown straps and metallic studs, designed for rugged terrain and combat readiness. Beneath his coat, a blue gem necklace hangs around his neck, a rare personal memento tied to his son Pierce, often hidden but occasionally visible when the coat shifts, adding a layer of enigmatic depth to his stern demeanor.

Thelonious Viper is a brooding, ruthless antagonist forged in the fires of war and personal tragedy, blending the iron discipline of a former special forces commander with the cold manipulation of a grieving father desperate for redemption. At his core, he is driven by an obsessive love for his adopted son, Pierce, whom he views as the sole "angel" in his nightmarish life—a loss that shattered him and twisted his moral compass into a venomous coil. This grief manifests as a calculating ruthlessness; he sees others as expendable tools, willing to drain life energy from students via Bio-Bands or pit them in deadly Survival Duels without remorse, all to fuel Yubel's promise of resurrection. Viper's ego is immense, bordering on arrogance—he believes hard work, unyielding discipline, and intense training conquer all, a philosophy he enforces with menacing intimidation, making him the professor every student fears. Manipulative and authoritative, he speaks in a low, hissing drawl laced with subtle threats and psychological barbs, often quoting military axioms like "Discipline forges the blade that cuts through weakness" to justify his cruelty. He excels at reading vulnerabilities, as seen when he recruits Axel Brodie by preying on the young man's loyalty, or when he crushes Adrian Gecko's spirit by maxing out Bio-Band drainage to near-fatal levels. Yet beneath the serpentine facade lies a tragic vulnerability: emotional scars make him susceptible to deception, especially illusions of Pierce, reducing the iron-willed commander to a stupor of desperate hope. The blue gem necklace he wears beneath his coat, a cherished relic from his son, occasionally surfaces in his subconscious, fueling fleeting moments of paternal tenderness—gentle reminiscences of teaching Pierce Duel Monsters—but these are quickly smothered by bitterness toward fate.
