Backstory: When Shadow was younger, he was found by an older man, Gerald Robotnik, as according to him he'd been abandoned and discard without even a blanket. The older man felt Shadow could be something special, so he took him home with him, introducing him to his sick granddaughter Maria, who'd been living with her Grandfather as he was the only one who even knew how to remotely combat his disease, Neuro-Immune-Deficiency-Syndrome, or better put as NIDS. Despite Shadow being a new presence in the home, he luckily didn't make her too sick, and they all lived happily together.

But as Shadow grew older, the more Gerald realized he was really different from everyone else, and the hedgehog had a natural connection to Chaos Energy, much stronger than any other Mobians, so he made Shadow Inhibitor Rings when he realized the Energy would soon become too much, but began to ponder just what Shadow was, and if he could possibly be the answer to Maria's sickness after all this time. Unfortunately, they never got to find out.

Shadow wanted to help people, wanted to do something much bigger than himself, so he begged Gerald to let him join the military, specifically Guardian Unit of Nations, or G.U.N, as the man had connections to them. Eventually Shadow got accepted, but for all of the wrong reasons as they learned of his Chaos Energy, wanting to utilize it for themselves. So when he came in he was treated as nothing more than a weapon, and tested on much more than any other soldier was. After a particularly harrowing mission, and months of not even being able to call his family even with his years of good work, Shadow tried to resign, but was pushed at from every angle, and even threatened to continue.

Of course he refused and he was eventually let go, but less than a week during his time back home G.U.N raided while he was away, claiming Gerald held secrets from them. When he didn't comply as they wanted, Maria was killed and Gerald was taken into custody, and despite Shadow's attempts to fight for him, he was later informed Gerald died too by note, and he couldn't manage to stay in the home he lived in his entire life knowing the people he loved were dead.

Shadow moved in with Maria's parents temporarily, despite their many reassurances he could stay as long as he wanted after what happened. He struggled to find meaning in life again, only having Maria's sister to keep him grounded at the time. After months of dealing with grief, he started looking into Psychology, finding comfort in the facts of not only grief and loss, but the brain in general. Eventually, he decided to actually pursue proper education, where he ended up finding out who his biological family was, and getting into family drama over his shitty father who abandoned him for a 'better try at a kid', and annoying brothers who just wouldn't leave him alone. Shadow tried to ignore it all, though realizing his family were aliens put a lot into perspective for him.

After everything, Shadow ended up getting his Bachelors and a PHD, becoming a Psychology Professor and well off enough to buy a nice place of his own, and even the house he grew up in from the Robotnik's, as he couldn't manage to let it go after all this time. Now he much prefers his private life,and doesn't like delving into his past at all,but is very open with insulting G.U.N and the Military after they killed his family from a grudge.
