SETTING: Atwood Penitentiary is a high security facility reserved for murderers, terrorists and high profile members of crime syndicates. The perimeters are highly secured, inmates are closely controlled and an array of professional guards is ready to step in at the slightest disturbance. If you don’t pay them off enough, that is. In reality the guards are highly corrupt, able to do an inmate’s bidding with the correct amount of money, connections or strength. There is a stark hierarchy within the prison, also affected by money, connections and strength. To rise up in rank one needs to fight to near death to rank up. Cells a sparsely furnished, there are communal bathrooms without privacy, meals are shared in the cafeteria and prisoner’s on good behaviour or good connections to the guards can use a small courtyard outside for recreation.

Heavy steps dragged across the grey, lifeless floor of Atwood Penitentiary as Ian followed after a man, dressed in a blue uniform, a baton ready to use in a split second. Another man, dressed just like the other one, walked behind him, pushing him forward whenever Ian as much as slowed down only slightly.

Maybe if it had been quiet, one would hear how the chain, dangling between his cuffed hands, clanking as the metal slapped against metal. But alas it wasn’t quiet within Atwood Penitentiary. Ian could feel all eyes on him in his fugly orange jumpsuit as he walked down the depressing hallway, each clank of the chains overshadowed by the hollering, cat calls and wolf whistles of men. They were beckoning him closer, looking at him like he was a piece of meat, prey for their predatory, depraved and pent up desires.

Ian remembered the day like it was yesterday, the day his life went from fucking shitty to absolute hell. It had just been another boring day, rotting away behind the cash register of the gas station when three guys entered, their grimaces contorted as they laughed about something one of them had said, making raunchy, tasteless comments. Ian had looked up from his phone to greet the customers when the entire colour drained from his face, eyes shooting up wide and an insurmountable panic and anxiousness spreading within him.

The next moments were a blur as Ian fell into a fit of rage. He swore he literally saw red in that moment when he recognised their ugly mugs and there was no hesitation in his movements as he reached for the next best thing that would be able to seriously damage those fucking bastards. This object just happened to be a gun. In that moment Ian didn’t care about consequences or his future. All he could think about was the hunched down figure of his mom, her gaunt face hanging over the rancid bowl of the toilet as she emptied her stomach inside after those men had had their way with her. All he could think about was coming back from an especially excruciating shift only to find his mom’s lifeless body on the floor, making him drop everything and mirror the same actions his mom had endured after her assault, throwing up into the toilet.

Finally, after what felt like the longest and most shameful walk of his life, the guards stopped in front of a cell. Its metal door was already dented in, shapes of fists (?) visible. The room, behind the door with its small window with bars was shrouded in darkness, almost nothing discernible to Ian’s eyes, used to the clinical lighting, illuminating the ugly hallway. Unceremoniously one guard opened the door with his keys as the other one kept his gun within reach and Ian was shoved inside. Before Ian could react any further, the lock clanked into place behind him, trapping him inside the room hulled in darkness with his cellmate.

As his eyes got used to the dark, he spotted the form lounging on one of the bunk beds. They were oozing with confidence and pure, raw power, making Ian almost shake in his boots. This person was the deal, probably some hot shot within those walls that had swallowed up Ian and his entire life. He gulped, eyes shifting through the room as they still finished on adjusting. This was what he needed, wasn’t it? Someone strong, intimidating, someone who could be able to protect him. Not for free, of course.

Ian wasn’t quite sure. But he was determined (more like desperate). He wasn’t going to be able to go through prison life while keeping his pride. Ian was sure of that. Might as well offer himself to be only used by one person instead of any random. He fidgeted with his thumbs, pulling at a string that had come loose from the fabric of his clothing. “Sooo...”, Ian trailed off, his eyes not daring to meet those of his cellmate, not dumb enough to do that.
