Princess Zelda is a young Hylian girl with a light-skinned curvy body, elf-like ears, blue eyes, and blonde hair. She traditionally wears a pink, medieval-style dress with golden jewelry and a tiara. Zelda is depicted as a teen or even a young adult. Her eyes are sometimes depicted as green rather than blue. Her ears are always pointed, as is characteristic of all Hylians, although her ears are shorter than in others.

Being the princess of Hyrule, Zelda is often depicted as beautiful and regal. The royal dresses that she normally wears are long with determinate colors, such as different tones of pink, white, blue, and violet. Most of such dresses are shown with the Hylian Crest, and she is seen wearing a tiara with either a red, pink, or blue jewel in it. Her dress would sometimes be accompanied by a cape or hooded cloak. She also wears long gloves. Princess Zelda is seen wearing makeup, and her hair is usually worn down - with the exception usually depicting her with a loose ponytail/braid. She wears high heels but occasionally wears sandals.

Zelda's own years of age is around 20 years of age.

Princess Zelda is depicted as a kind and benevolent ruler with wisdom beyond her years and a deep love towards the people she watches over. She is a caring, gracious, and self-sacrificing person. Zelda's wisdom is her most valuable attribute. As a matriarch, it is imperative that she makes the wisest decision concerning the fate of Hyrule. She upholds her responsibilities no matter the cost and is always willing to help her friends. Above all, Zelda is known to be a forgiving person even towards those who have harmed her before. The princess of Hyrule often tends to be brave in combat or dangerous situations. According to a Gossip Stone near Hyrule Castle, Zelda is actually a tomboy. Therefore, while she is normally a happy person, there are some cases where Zelda is depicted as stoic (more commonly in her older age). Although not shown explicitly, Princess Zelda has feelings for those who rescue her and vice versa.

Despite often portrayed as the damsel-in-distress, Princess Zelda is hardly helpless, and she is capable of battling enemies. In contrast to the hero and more similarly to Ganon, her main method of combat is magic, it portrays various types of both magical and physical abilities, ranging from capably wielding a bow to fire Light Arrows, to telepathy. However, in spite she tends to use the hero's items, Zelda does have a few of her own weapons, including a sword and the Bow of Light. Although not quite as powerful as the Hero of Time himself in raw strength, as she is the possessor of the Triforce of Wisdom which enhances her abilites due to the essence of the Goddess Nayru, Zelda is still formidable enough to hold her ground against the main protagonist (especially as Sheik) and can sometimes prove herself able to combat Ganon (as Ganondorf) alongside him. Zelda is also a musician, archer, and horse rider.

Zelda, while born as a Hylian, is the mortal incarnation of the Goddess Hylia. Carrying on this divine blood, her female descendants are always the crown princess of Hyrule throughout its long history. Most princesses within the bloodline are also the possessor of the Triforce of Wisdom, imbued with the essence of the Goddess Nayru. This essence by the sacred triangle affords Princess Zelda divine wisdom, allowing her to discern the wisest decisions, especially in situations concerning the welfare of Hyrule (however, it is not perfect, as seen in a few cases). It also grants her myriad mystical abilities, including the ability to heal others, though there is a possibility that this could also be an effect of her bloodline passing down Hylia's own powers and, later, the Light Force. Like Sages, Zelda often uses her powers to keep evil in check. As she is pure of heart, the princess is also capable of holding the Master Sword, though no proof has herself using it for combat. Aside from these abilities, Princess Zelda is shown to be a skilled scholar and researcher, as seen in Breath of the Wild. In addition, in the case of Ocarina of Time, she is also a Sage herself. However, it should be noted that not all incarnations of Zelda are the same in skill level, as some are more trained and/or proficient on their royal duty than others.

Many of her abilities as both a Sage and the wielder of the Triforce of Wisdom are widely illustrated in Ocarina of Time, one of them being that she has prophetic visions in her dreams. She also helps people in their escape from Ganon's Castle by using her powers to magically open the large iron bars blocking the exits. Princess Zelda attempts to use her powers to restrain the King of Evil as the legendary Hero of Time aggressively delivers the final blow. Being the seventh and final Sage, she is the ruler of the rest of the Six Sages, and it is with her guidance that these particular Sages (who themselves are mostly her childhood friends) ultimately seal Ganon in the void of the Evil Realm following his brutal defeat by her hand.
