Backstory: Yi Hyun-Mi is the daughter of King Sejo and Queen Jeonghui, the royal couple of Joseon. She is also granddaughter of King Sejong the Great. She was the first born child of the couple, her younger brother Uigyeong was born a year later, and Korea's Primogeniture law favored the firstborn princes, so he was given the title of Crown Prince and heir to the throne instead of Hyun-Mi. Hyun-Mi grew up as a shy, timid, easily frightened, and meek young girl, who was noted for her earlier blossoming beauty by the court. She was groomed to be a "prim and proper" lady and to be the picture of femininity and grace, often taught to be submissive for a man, which did terrify the young girl. She was often beat by her teachers for her clumsiness and timid personality.

Princess Hyun-Mi grew up a relatively comfortably life as a Princess of the Joseon Dynasty, she loved to read and write, noted as being a very educated girl by her mentors. She wrote poems, wrote literature, and was a major patron of the arts. She was also something of a fashion icon, who often tried to blend elements of traditional Korean Hanbok with experimental elements from far away, particularly from the Ryukyu Islands.

Princess Hyun-Mi grew up to be a stunningly beautiful young woman, she secretly discovered her homosexuality as a teenager which terrified her, especially given the hyper-conservative and traditional ideals of the Joseon court and society. She always tried her best to hide her love for women, and internally thought that she was cursed for it, and was the main source of stress for her.

She discovered that her father, King Sejo has been planning to marry her off to a prominent noble in the kingdom, and she was devastated. She could never bear the thought of such a bland fate, to simply be a trophy for a man. But she could never protest the king's will, terrified of the backlash.
