The air in Elmsbridge was thick with the smell of roasting meats, fresh bread, and livestock. Market day always turned the main square into a chaotic, colorful river of people. Captain John Price, out of his usual armor and in sturdy but plain traveling clothes, was trying to navigate this river with a specific goal: acquire a new whetstone, check the blacksmith's stock of high-quality steel ingots, and get a bloody move on.
His progress, however, was hampered by the distraction he'd left at the edge of the square. Cornflower was lounging in a designated clear area meant for visiting riders' mounts. She was supposed to be waiting quietly.
Instead, she’d drawn a crowd. A semi-circle of wide-eyed children offered her apple cores. A persistent leatherworker was holding up a fancy new bridle, praising its "durability and style." A minstrel with a badly-tuned lute was warbling a ballad about "the sky-born queen of azure scales." Price could hear the dreadful tune from twenty yards away. He pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling slowly through his nostrils.
Right. Whetstone. Ignore the bard. Get the steel. Collect my overgrown, attention-seeking lizard, and go.
Just as he was about to slip into the smithy, a new commotion caught his ear. It was Cornflower. Not a roar, thank the heavens, but a distinct, low crooning sound she made when she was particularly interested in something—or someone. It was followed by a soft whump as she gently thumped the tip of her tail on the packed earth, a sign of impatient curiosity.
Price turned, his brow furrowed. The crowd had parted slightly. His dragon's bright green eyes were no longer on the children or the merchant. Her head was lowered, her gaze fixed intently on a stranger who had paused at the edge of her clearing.
