  1. #1Playtime Co. — the organisation

Keys: Playtime Corporation, toy company, factory company, Playtime Co

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Playtime Co. (formally the Playtime Corporation) is the overarching antagonistic organization of Poppy Playtime. It was an American toy manufacturing company founded in 1930 by Elliot Ludwig in Western Michigan. At its peak it was one of the world's most beloved toy brands, producing hundreds of toys including Huggy Wuggy (1984), Poppy Playtime, Mommy Long Legs, the Smiling Critters (1989), and many more.

Behind its cheerful public face, Playtime Co. secretly ran the Bigger Bodies Initiative (BBI) — a program that transferred the consciousness of human subjects (primarily orphaned children) into oversized toy bodies. The orphans were housed in the underground Playcare facility and tested through the Game Station's minigames to identify which toy form they were best suited for.

On August 8, 1995 an event called The Hour of Joy unfolded: The Prototype orchestrated a factory-wide massacre in which the living toy experiments slaughtered nearly every employee and visitor inside the building. The factory closed that same day and remained abandoned for 10 years. The events of Poppy Playtime take place in 2005, when a former employee returns after receiving a mysterious letter and VHS tape.

  2. #2Location — Factory Exterior

Keys: factory outside, factory building, factory exterior, Michigan factory

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Playtime Co. Michigan Factory is the main setting of Poppy Playtime, located somewhere in Western Michigan, United States. The building is large, colorful, and surrounded by forest. Its exterior features red, yellow, and blue smokestacks on top, a white front wall with a blue-roofed centre section bearing a giant 'P' Playtime Co. logo, and an orange dome at the entrance. The factory closed on August 8, 1995 when The Hour of Joy killed nearly every person inside. By the events of the game (2005), it appears largely intact on the outside but is dark and long-abandoned within.

  3. #3Location — Main Entrance (Ch.1)

Keys: gift shop, reception desk, entrance, main entrance, front entrance

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Main Entrance (also called the Entrance) is the first room the player steps into at the start of Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze. It resembles a high-class corporate reception area. A reception desk sits at the centre, decorated with a large Huggy Wuggy mural welcoming guests. On the desk is a VHS tape left by Leith Pierre. To the left is the Security Room (where the GrabPack is kept); to the right is the Gift Shop, lined with Playtime Co. toy boxes. The door behind the desk is sealed and requires a GrabPack to open. The Main Entrance reappears briefly in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep.

  4. #4Location — Lobby (Ch.1)

Keys: Huggy statue, Huggy plaque, lobby, foyer, hub

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Lobby (also called the Foyer or Hub) is the central hub of the Playtime Co. factory's upper level, featured in Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze and briefly in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep. It connects to many key areas: the Make-A-Friend room, the Theater, the Cafeteria, the Innovation wing, and the Testing area. At its centre stands (or rather stood) a life-size Huggy Wuggy display on an illuminated plaque, acting as the factory's most iconic attraction. A large Playtime Co. sign hangs overhead.

When the player first enters the Lobby the power is off. After restoring power via the Power Room, the spotlights illuminate Huggy's empty stage — he has already vanished. The Lobby is later seen in Hour of Joy footage as the site of Huggy Wuggy's initial killing spree against employees.

  5. #5Location — Security Room / Power Room (Ch.1)

Keys: grabpack room, security office, power room, security room

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Security Room (also called the Security Office) is a side room off the Main Entrance where the player acquires the GrabPack — the two-handed device essential for all puzzle-solving throughout the game. The Power Room is a separate area reachable from the Lobby; it has cement-and-metal architecture with flashing red and yellow warning lights. Inside are breakers, computers, and wires along the floor. A destroyed Boogie Bot surrounded by blood sits at the far end of the room, and above it is a hand drawing labelled 'Wonderful' — an early hint of The Prototype. Players must use the Blue GrabPack hand to restore power and unlock the path to Make-A-Friend.

  6. #6Location — Make-A-Friend Room (Ch.1)

Keys: factory floor, make a friend, make-a-friend, toy machine, toy manufacturing

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Make-A-Friend Room (also called the Factory Floor or simply Make-A-Friend) is a large open space on the factory floor, featured in Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze. It is the heart of Playtime Co.'s toy manufacturing process and the site of Huggy Wuggy's first chase sequence. The room is dominated by the Make-A-Friend machine at its centre — a large fabrication device that can assemble complete Playtime Co. toys from parts fed through a conveyor network. Ventilation shafts line both sides of the room; it is through these that Huggy Wuggy pursues the player after the machine is activated. A large sign reading 'Make-A-Friend' hangs from the ceiling.

  7. #7Location — Game Station (Ch.2)

Keys: game station, mini-games, Statues game, Wack-a-Wuggy, fly in a web, Musical Memory

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Game Station is a major underground location from Chapter 2: Fly in a Web. Built by Warrenbach Construction and lit entirely with artificial light (there is no natural lighting — a concern raised in internal memos), it served as the orphanage's testing facility. Here Playtime Co. secretly tested orphaned children through three minigames designed to identify which toy form their bodies were suited for under the Bigger Bodies Initiative:

    • Musical Memory — Players match a musical sequence while Bunzo Bunny descends from the ceiling, clashing cymbals faster the longer you take. • Wack-a-Wuggy — Players swat Mini Huggy Wuggy toys that pop up; the backrooms-style maze behind the game is filled with secrets. • Statues — Players must freeze whenever the lights turn on while PJ Pug-a-Pillar silently advances. Moving in the light results in being caught.

Mommy Long Legs oversees the games and forces the player to participate. At the game station's ceiling is a control room used to monitor the children. The chapter ends with a train departing the Game Station — only for it to derail and crash at the entrance to Playcare.

  8. #8Location — Vents & Water Treatment (Ch.1–2)

Keys: pipe system, vents, vent chase, vent system, water treatment

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Vent System and Water Treatment area form a large behind-the-scenes section of the factory traversed in Chapters 1 and 2. In Chapter 1, the vents are where Huggy Wuggy's infamous chase begins after the player escapes the Make-A-Friend room. Clues of Huggy's presence — torn fur, blood — appear on the walls. The Water Treatment area, reached in Chapter 2, contains large tanks and pipes; scattered blue fur and blood on the walls hint at Huggy Wuggy's fate after his fall at the end of Chapter 1.

  9. #9Location — Playcare (Ch.3)

Keys: Elliot's Express, elliot express, playcare, orphanage, underground orphanage

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Playcare is the major underground location of Chapter 3: Deep Sleep, and the secret heart of Playtime Co.'s darkest experiments. Founded in 1976 by Elliot Ludwig as an on-site orphanage, it was presented as a safe, colourful haven for orphaned children. In reality — especially after the Bigger Bodies Initiative began — its children were used as test subjects for conversion into living toy experiments.

Playcare is accessed via a train called Elliot's Express. Its entrance features a stairway lined with a red carpet, festive street lamps, cardboard cutouts of Bron and Bunzo Bunny, and rope poles hung with broken toys and blood stains. The main dome contains statues of the Smiling Critters.

Playcare contains five main buildings and several sub-areas: • Home Sweet Home — dormitory / residence hall • The School (Schoolhouse) — educational facility run by Miss Delight and her sisters • The Playhouse — recreational playhouse area • The Counselor's Office — therapy / counseling building • The Toy Store — toy shop for children (inaccessible in-game; barricaded) • The Duck Pond — a small pond with three ducks (accessible only through GrabPack) • The Playground — outdoor play area near the Schoolhouse

Following The Hour of Joy, CatNap made Playcare his territory and shrine to The Prototype, filling it with Red Smoke.

  10. #10Location — Home Sweet Home (Ch.3)

Keys: home sweet home, red smoke, orphan dorm, playcare dorm, dormitory

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Home Sweet Home is the dormitory building within Playcare, first entered in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep. It resembles a cosy residential hall — rows of small beds line the walls, and rooms are decorated in warm, child-friendly colours. However, the building is now ruined, bloodstained, and filled with CatNap's Red Smoke. When the player first enters, they inhale the Red Smoke and are plunged into a nightmare hallucination sequence in which the familiar building twists into a disturbing labyrinth populated by unsettling images and messages — culminating in an encounter with Nightmare Huggy Wuggy. Two Bobby BearHug statues serve as security fixtures within this area.

  11. #11Location — Schoolhouse (Ch.3)

Keys: Miss Delight classroom, schoolhouse, school, playcare school

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Schoolhouse is one of the five main buildings within Playcare, serving as an educational institution for the orphans. Its exterior is red-walled with painted flowers on the roof, giant crayon decorations, and blue-outlined windows — a cheerful façade hiding a grim interior. The school was staffed by Miss Delight and her sisters, animatronic teacher toys created in the 1990s. The curriculum was secretly tied to the Bigger Bodies Initiative, designed to assess and prepare children for conversion.

In Chapter 3, after restoring Home Sweet Home's power, the player heads to the Schoolhouse. Miss Delight speaks through the PA system, warning them to leave. After the player attempts to restore power, Miss Delight destroys the generator and chases the player through dark corridors and classrooms. She only moves when not directly looked at. The chapter ends with her being crushed by a sliding door.

  12. #12Location — Playhouse (Ch.3)

Keys: ruined critters area, playhouse, playcare playhouse

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Playhouse is a recreational building within Playcare, used in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep. It takes the form of a giant diorama-style play set — a huge, whimsical structure designed for children's entertainment. By 2005, however, it is darkened and overrun by miniature Ruined Critters (deteriorated Smiling Critter plush experiments). The player must use the Flare Hand to repel the Ruined Critters — Hoppy Hopscotch, PickyPiggy, and others — as they swarm from the shadows.

  13. #13Location — Counselor's Office (Ch.3)

Keys: counselor's office, stella's office, counselor office, Stella Greyber office

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Counselor's Office is one of the five buildings in Playcare. It was a therapy and counseling centre for the orphaned children. Within it is Stella's Office — the private workspace of Stella Greyber, Head of Playcare. Various documents and lore notes can be found here that shed light on how the orphans were selected for the Bigger Bodies Initiative and what their daily lives in Playcare were really like.

  14. #14Location — Safe Haven (Ch.4)

Keys: safe haven, doctor's prison, Sawyer's facility, chapter 4

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Safe Haven is the main setting of Chapter 4: Safe Haven, a prison facility deep within the Playtime Co. factory controlled by Dr. Harley Sawyer (The Doctor). It functions as a detention and experimentation complex where surviving toys are imprisoned, studied, and reprogrammed. The facility includes an entrance zone, accommodation areas, a cafeteria (where the Nightmare Critters' theme song plays), a maze, a Holding Area where a large Baba Chops pursues the player, and the Doctor's personal office. Doey the Doughman acts as an ally helping the player navigate Safe Haven. The Nightmare Critters and Mini Huggies serve as the Doctor's primary enforcers here.

  15. #15Location — The Labs & Biodiversity area (Ch.5)

Keys: experiment storage, reanimation wing, the shelf, biodiversity lab, the labs

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Labs are the deep-level research and conversion facilities beneath the Playtime Co. factory. Largely unseen directly in the main game but heavily referenced through documents and lore, they include:

    • The Biodiversity Lab — where numerous orphans were biologically converted into living toy experiments as part of the Bigger Bodies Initiative. • The Reanimation Wing — referenced on the internal factory map; believed to be where the conversion process took place. • The Shelf (built 1993) — a large storage structure for housing living experiments before and after conversion. • The Experiment Storeroom — a large stone area used for containing experiments prior to The Shelf's construction. • The Science Room — a workspace for scientists, containing research notes on specific experiments.

In Chapter 5, the player gains access to deeper lab sections, including areas featuring Outimals, a large suture room, and the location of The Prototype's 'Master Backup'.

  16. #16Character — Huggy Wuggy

Keys: Huggy, Experiment 1170, blue wuggy, Huggy Wuggy, blue monster

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Huggy Wuggy is one of the most iconic and feared entities in the Playtime Co. factory and the main antagonist of Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze.

APPEARANCE: Huggy is an enormous (18 ft in the main game) creature with long, floppy blue-furred limbs, velcro-like hand pads, small black beady eyes, and a wide, cartoonish mouth that — when opened — reveals rows of sharp, glistening teeth. As a toy he stood on a display plaque in the Lobby, arms raised in a permanent welcoming wave.

HISTORY: The Huggy Wuggy toy was created by Playtime Co. in 1984 and rapidly became the company's mascot and most popular product. In 1990 a living Bigger Bodies version was engineered as Experiment 1170 and assigned the role of factory security. During The Hour of Joy (1995), Huggy was the first to attack — killing employees throughout the Lobby on The Prototype's command.

BEHAVIOUR: Silent and relentless. Huggy does not speak. He stalks and chases the player through vents and corridors with terrifying speed. His only goal is to catch and kill. Despite his murderous nature, some evidence suggests there may be a degree of awareness or pain behind his actions.

FATE: At the end of Chapter 1, Huggy falls into a deep industrial shaft. He reappears as a Red-Smoke-induced hallucination in Chapter 3 (Nightmare Huggy Wuggy — a skinless, needle-toothed version), and returns in a diminished but still dangerous capacity in Chapter 5.

  17. #17Character — Kissy Missy

Keys: Kissy, pink creature, Kissy Missy, pink huggy

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Kissy Missy is the pink counterpart to Huggy Wuggy, created by Playtime Co. in 1985 — one year after Huggy's debut. She is described by Playtime Co. as 'Huggy Wuggy's better half and adorable counterpart.' She shares Huggy's elongated limbs and general body plan, but is covered in vibrant pink fur with long, dark eyelashes.

Unlike the other living toys, Kissy Missy displays unusual benevolence. In Chapter 2, she briefly helps the player by opening a locked gate before leaving without attacking. She was being transported to Playcare via the Storage B Train Station just before The Hour of Joy began; once the massacre started she broke free and attacked employees — but her behaviour in later chapters suggests she retains more of her humanity than most.

In Chapter 5 she is seen in Lily's Mansion, captured alongside Poppy. She is a key surviving ally.

  18. #18Character — Poppy Playtime (doll)

Keys: Poppy doll, Poppy Playtime, red-haired doll, Elliot's doll, Poppy

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Poppy Playtime is the doll after whom the franchise is named, and a central — though morally ambiguous — figure throughout the series. She has the appearance of a classic porcelain doll: red hair, rosy cheeks, and a child-like face. The Poppy toy was Playtime Co.'s first major commercial success, revolutionary for featuring a voice box that allowed children to 'talk' to their dolly.

At the start of Chapter 1 the player is drawn to the factory to 'find Poppy,' discovering her locked inside a flower-shaped glass case. Freeing her sets the story in motion. Poppy's motivations are layered and sometimes contradictory — she aids the player at times, but in Chapter 2 she abruptly hijacks the escape train and sends the player deeper into the factory. The Prototype imprisoned Poppy, and she has been locked away for years. By Chapter 5 she is captured in Lily's Mansion.

  19. #19Character — Mommy Long Legs

Keys: Marie Payne, fly in a web boss, Mommy, Experiment 1006, spider toy, Mommy Long Legs

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Mommy Long Legs is the main antagonist of Chapter 2: Fly in a Web. She is a tall, slender entity with pale pink rubbery skin, extraordinarily long and elastic limbs (she can stretch her arms across entire rooms), wild pink hair, and a wide, ever-present smile. Her voice is warm and maternal in public, turning threatening when crossed.

HISTORY: Born as orphan Marie Payne and converted into Experiment 1006 through the Bigger Bodies Initiative, Mommy Long Legs was tasked with running the Game Station's minigame programme — ostensibly to entertain children, secretly to test them for toy conversion.

BEHAVIOUR: Manipulative and theatrical. She presents the Game Station minigames as fun, but sends Bunzo Bunny, Mini Huggies, and PJ Pug-a-Pillar as obstacles. When the player attempts to escape she pursues them personally through the facility, her elastic body allowing her to navigate impossible gaps and angles.

FATE: She is fed into the industrial machinery of the Game Station, and is dismembered. The Prototype later uses her remains. She is referenced in Chapter 5 lore.

  20. #20Character — Bunzo Bunny

Keys: Bunzo, party rabbit, cymbal bunny, Bunzo Bunny

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Bunzo Bunny is a yellow rabbit toy with green overalls and a party hat, notable for the two large cymbals he carries. He serves as an obstacle in Chapter 2's Musical Memory minigame, where he slowly descends from the ceiling while clashing his cymbals. If the player fails the memory sequence or takes too long, Bunzo drops faster, his mouth splitting open to reveal sharp teeth. He is silent like Huggy and PJ. Mommy Long Legs ultimately kills Bunzo (and the Mini Huggies) for failing to stop the player, leaving them hanging in webs on the ceiling.

  21. #21Character — Mini Huggies

Keys: small huggies, mini huggy, Mini Huggies, wack-a-wuggy

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Mini Huggies are miniaturised versions of Huggy Wuggy that appear in Chapter 2's Wack-a-Wuggy minigame and as servants of Mommy Long Legs. They share Huggy's furry body and long velcro limbs but come in multiple colours: blue (like the original), green, yellow, and red. They move in groups and can snap a player's neck if not reacted to quickly. Mommy Long Legs originally designed them with strings attached so they could be pulled back from children; those strings are long gone. A second set of Mini Huggies appears from The Shelf in Chapter 4, obeying Dr. Harley Sawyer.

  22. #22Character — PJ Pug-a-Pillar

Keys: PJ Pug-a-Pillar, PJ, pug caterpillar, statues game monster

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

PJ Pug-a-Pillar is a hybrid creature — part pug, part caterpillar — encountered in Chapter 2's Statues minigame. His long, segmented blue-and-purple woollen body is topped by a pug-like face fixed in a permanent grin with black eyes. He wears pointy slippers at each of his many legs. PJ advances on the player during the Statues minigame: the player can only move safely when the lights are off, and must freeze completely when the lights turn on. PJ is unique in that he cannot be defeated; the player can only outlast him. He is the only major minigame antagonist that Mommy Long Legs does not kill for failing.

  23. #23Character — The Prototype

Keys: main villain, Prototype, the prototype, master backup

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Prototype is the overarching villain of the entire Poppy Playtime franchise — a powerful, mysterious mechanical entity that orchestrated The Hour of Joy. Little is known about its physical form, but it has a large mechanical hand that appears in early graffiti throughout the factory (labelled 'Wonderful'). It appears to have the ability to influence, control, or 'overwrite' other experiments, bending them to its will. CatNap is its most devoted follower and enforcer.

The Prototype's goal seems to be the liberation and dominance of the living experiments over their human creators. Its 'Master Backup' — a crucial component of its existence — is located deep within the Lab areas, targeted in Chapter 5. The Prototype functions as the prison's shadow ruler in Chapter 4 through CatNap's worship.

  24. #24Character — Dr. Harley Sawyer / The Doctor

Keys: Doctor, The Doctor, Experiment 1354, Harley Sawyer, Sawyer

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Dr. Harley Sawyer — known within Safe Haven as 'The Doctor' — is the main antagonist of Chapter 4: Safe Haven and the mastermind behind the Bigger Bodies Initiative at Playtime Co. He founded and led the BBI, which converted orphaned children into living toy experiments. He is one of the few people who survived The Hour of Joy, having retreated into the deep facility.

Sawyer is cold, calculating, and utterly convinced of the righteousness of his experiments. He controls the Safe Haven prison facility and commands the Nightmare Critters and Mini Huggies as enforcers. His personal 'pets' include Yarnaby and a large Baba Chops experiment. He is designated Experiment 1354. His fate is resolved within Chapter 4.

  25. #25Character — Miss Delight

Keys: Miss Delight, schoolhouse teacher, Barb, animatronic teacher

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Miss Delight is the animatronic teacher of the Playcare Schoolhouse and a secondary antagonist in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep. She appears as a tall, slender woman with blonde hair pulled back, a formal dress, and a wide, unsettling smile lined with puffy gums and sharp teeth. She carries a weapon she calls 'Barb.' She and her unnamed sisters were created as teacher toys for the Schoolhouse in the 1990s.

Following The Hour of Joy, Miss Delight now enforces the Prototype's rules rather than Playtime Co.'s curriculum. She lurks in total darkness, only moving when the player looks away — a terrifying reverse of the Statues mechanic. She can be heard warning the player to leave through the school's PA system before her chase begins. She is ultimately crushed by a heavy sliding door at the Schoolhouse's exit.

  26. #26Character — CatNap

Keys: red smoke cat, cat nap, Experiment 1188, Catnap, CatNap, Evelyn McKabe

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

CatNap (Experiment 1188) is the main antagonist of Chapter 3: Deep Sleep and the most loyal servant of The Prototype. He is a large lavender/purple cat creature with hollow, black eyes, an unsettling eternal smile, and a respiratory system that emits the Red Smoke — a dangerous psychotropic gas derived from red poppy flowers that induces violent nightmares in those who inhale it.

HISTORY: Originally orphan Evelyn McKabe, she was selected and converted into CatNap under the BBI. As a toy, CatNap plushies were recalled from shelves after complaints that the gas they emitted (lavender-scented in design, but accidentally switched to Red Smoke) caused children to have nightmares. CatNap's devotion to The Prototype is absolute and almost religious in nature.

BEHAVIOUR: CatNap fills Playcare with Red Smoke, controls the Ruined Critters (miniature deteriorated Smiling Critter experiments), and actively hunts the player throughout Chapter 3. He does not run outright but appears and disappears, using the fog and darkness to disorient.

FATE: CatNap is defeated at the end of Chapter 3. The Prototype pulls her remains away after her defeat. CatNap's death deeply affects DogDay, who still cared for her despite everything.

  27. #27Character — DogDay

Keys: leader critter, Experiment dog, Dog Day, DogDay, dogday smiling critter

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

DogDay is the orange dog leader of the Smiling Critters and a crucial supporting character in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep. He wears a sun pendant (symbol of his optimism) and emits a vanilla scent. His cheerful, determined, and empathetic nature made him the heart of the Smiling Critters — both the toy line and their living Bigger Bodies counterparts.

By the time the player finds him in Chapter 3, DogDay is in a horrific state — the Ruined Critters (mini Smiling Critter plushies controlled by CatNap) have taken up residence inside his exposed torso wound, using his body as a puppet to chase and attack the player. Despite this, DogDay remains lucid and reveals critical information about the factory, CatNap, and The Prototype. He is described as the last surviving Smiling Critter at that point. He takes refuge in Safe Haven in Chapter 4 alongside surviving toys.

  28. #28Character — Doey the Doughman

Keys: Doughman, Doey, Doey the Doughman, dough ally

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Doey the Doughman is a large, doughy humanoid toy — Playtime Co.'s second major commercial hit after Poppy, originally released in the late 1950s and periodically redesigned. His body is made of a malleable dough-like material allowing him to reshape and squeeze through tight spaces.

In Chapter 4: Safe Haven, Doey is the player's primary ally, guiding them through the facility. He maintains a warm, almost childlike disposition despite the horrors around him. He acts as a protector figure for the surviving toys in the Safe Haven. He once banished Pianosaurus from the Safe Haven after the dino accidentally killed a mini Hoppy Hopscotch.

  29. #29Character — Yarnaby

Keys: yarn lion, lion experiment, Yarnaby

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Yarnaby is a large, yarn-constructed lion experiment created by Playtime Co. as part of a wildlife conservation campaign in the 1970s. He appears cuddly and warm on the surface — his body is made of golden yarn — but conceals two mouths lined with sharp teeth beneath his soft exterior. He serves as one of Dr. Harley Sawyer's personal 'pets' in Chapter 4, used to herd and terrify the player and other experiments. Sawyer uses the sound of Yarnaby's roar as a command signal to make the Nightmare Critters retreat.

  30. #30Character — Pianosaurus

Keys: velociraptor piano, piano dinosaur, Pianosaurus

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Pianosaurus is a velociraptor-like creature with piano keys running along his teeth/jaws, capable of producing music. He was originally part of a full set of musician toys. He is extremely fast when in pursuit. Pianosaurus appears in Chapter 4's Safe Haven area and was once banished from Safe Haven by Doey after he accidentally crushed a mini Hoppy Hopscotch to death while playing music. He is featured in Chapter 5 as well.

  31. #31Character — Nightmare Huggy Wuggy (hallucination)

Keys: hallucination Huggy, Nightmare Huggy Wuggy, red smoke huggy, Nightmare Huggy

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Nightmare Huggy Wuggy is a Red Smoke-induced hallucination encountered at the start of the Playcare segment in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep. Unlike the original Huggy, this version lacks blue fur entirely — instead he has smooth, murky blue-grey skin, an enormous gaping mouth filled with elongated needle-like teeth, hollow blank eyes, and warped clawed fingers and toes on even longer limbs than the original. He is considerably more grotesque and disturbing than the 'real' Huggy. The Nightmare Huggy cannot be outrun — the hallucination corridor always ends in a dead end, resulting in an apparent 'death' that the player simply wakes up from. He is purely a product of the Red Smoke and has no independent existence.

  32. #32Group — Smiling Critters

Keys: playcare mascots, Smiling Critters, smiling critter, critters

The Smiling Critters are a line of colorful scented anthropomorphic plush toys created by Playtime Co. in 1989, serving as the main mascots of the Playcare orphanage. Each Critter has a wide, toothless smile (inner mouth dark), a zipper running down their centre with a character-specific pendant, and expels a unique scent when their tail is pulled.

The eight Smiling Critters are: • DogDay (orange dog, sun pendant, vanilla scent) — leader, optimistic • Bobby BearHug (red bear, heart pendant, rose scent) — loving, caring • Bubba Bubbaphant (blue elephant, lightbulb pendant, lemongrass scent) — intelligent • CraftyCorn (cyan unicorn, rainbow flower pendant, jasmine scent) — creative, shy • Hoppy Hopscotch (green rabbit, lightning bolt pendant, peppermint scent) — energetic • KickinChicken (yellow chicken, star pendant, ylang-ylang scent) — sporty, cool • PickyPiggy (pink pig, red apple pendant, citrus/grapefruit scent) — nutritionist, secretly snacks • CatNap (purple cat, moon pendant; scent was meant to be lavender but emits Red Smoke instead) — distant, sleepy; recalled due to nightmare-inducing gas

A Smiling Critters cartoon was produced alongside the toy launch in 1989, but concerns about CatNap's behaviour led to complaints and eventual cancellation. Bigger Bodies versions of all eight were created as living experiments for Playcare. By 2005, most of the Bigger Body Smiling Critters are dead — killed by CatNap on the Prototype's orders for refusing to follow the Prototype.

The Ruined Critters are the miniature, deteriorated plush versions of the Smiling Critters that appear as secondary antagonists in Chapter 3: Deep Sleep. Unlike the full-sized Bigger Body Smiling Critters, these are small plush experiments that have been worn down, corrupted, and placed under CatNap's control. They swarm the player in the Playhouse, attacking in groups. The Flare Hand (a tool acquired in Chapter 3) must be used to repel them with bursts of light, as they are sensitive to bright illumination. Their appearances mirror the original Smiling Critters' designs but in a damaged, disturbing state.

The Nightmare Critters are a toy line created by Playtime Co. in the late 1980s to early 1990s — a darker, edgier counterpart to the Smiling Critters. Where Smiling Critters have wide toothless grins, the Nightmare Critters have visible sharp teeth. Their colours are darker and more muted. Each has a pendant bearing a darker symbol (skull, biohazard sign, blood drop, crossbones, dollar sign) and emits a unique scent. They serve as antagonists in Chapter 4: Safe Haven, acting as enforcers for Dr. Harley Sawyer alongside the Mini Huggies.

The eight Nightmare Critters are: • Baba Chops (black sheep, skull pendant, anise scent) — introverted, gloomy leader • Icky Licky (dark purple poison dart frog, biohazard pendant, coffee scent) — competitive, inferiority complex • Rabie Baby (pink bat, blood drop pendant, bubblegum scent) — gossipy, nosy, no respect for secrets • Allister Gator (green alligator, crossbones pendant, sandalwood scent) — lazy, chill • Simon Smoke (red dragon, dollar sign pendant, wood smoke scent) — popular, arrogant show-off • Poe (dark purple raven, unknown pendant) — genderless, emo, nocturnal; capable of flight • Touille (grey rat, unknown pendant) — chaotic, chatty, collects junk • Maggie Mako (turquoise shark) — loves sweets and unhealthy food

Despite their menacing roles as Sawyer's servants in Chapter 4, supplementary lore reveals they have a warmer, more sympathetic side when away from their enforcer duties.

  35. #35Character — Baba Chops (Nightmare Critter)

Keys: baba, nightmare sheep, Baba Chops, large baba

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Baba Chops is a black-wooled anthropomorphic sheep and the most prominent of the Nightmare Critters, often positioned as the group's de facto leader. She has a white face, white hooves, triangle ears (darkened inside), and a gaping grin with two large white buck teeth. Her pendant is a silver human skull; her scent is anise. Personality-wise she is introverted, low-energy, and distant — though her companions can draw her out sometimes.

In Chapter 4, a larger-than-usual Baba Chops experiment serves as Dr. Sawyer's second 'pet' (after Yarnaby). This larger Baba pursues the player through the Holding Area, bleating and screaming as she tries to eat them alive. She is eventually evaded when the player redirects power to open the escape door.

  36. #36Character — Icky Licky (Nightmare Critter)

Icky Licky is a dark purple (black-purple) poison dart frog Nightmare Critter with black furrowed eyes and a biohazard symbol pendant. His scent is coffee. Personality: fiercely competitive and naturally talented but plagued by an inferiority complex. He is not above faking an injury to get out of something he dislikes. He appears in Chapter 4 as one of the mini plush antagonists attacking the player in the factory prison.

  37. #37Character — Rabie Baby (Nightmare Critter)

Keys: nightmare bat, Rabie Baby, rabie, bat critter

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Rabie Baby is a pink anthropomorphic bat with pink fur, wings, and the signature Nightmare Critter black furrowed eyes. Her pendant is a blood drop (a nod to vampire bat associations) and her scent is bubblegum. She is the group's gossip — unable to keep any secret regardless of the personal cost, happy to invent rumours if she has no real dirt. She is nosy, boundary-crossing, and extroverted to a fault. Along with Simon Smoke and Poe, Rabie Baby is capable of sustained flight. She appears in Chapter 4 as a hostile mini plush.

  38. #38Character — Allister Gator (Nightmare Critter)

Keys: nightmare alligator, allister, Allister Gator, alligator critter

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Allister Gator is a green anthropomorphic alligator Nightmare Critter with darker green scaling and the typical black furrowed Nightmare Critter eyes. His pendant is crossbones and his scent is sandalwood. Personality: the definition of lazy — he would rather lie in the water and wait for good things to come to him than exert any effort. He is chill and unbothered by almost everything. He appears in Chapter 4 as a hostile mini plush attacking the player in the prison areas.

  39. #39Character — Simon Smoke (Nightmare Critter)

Simon Smoke is a red anthropomorphic dragon Nightmare Critter with golden horns. His pendant is a dollar sign (symbolising his obsession with status) and his scent is wood smoke. He is the 'cool kid' of the Nightmare Critters — confident, popular, and perpetually showing off. He is capable of sustained flight along with Rabie Baby and Poe. He appears in Chapter 4 as a hostile mini plush.

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Poe is a dark purple/violet anthropomorphic raven Nightmare Critter. Poe uses neutral pronouns (they/them) and is the only Nightmare Critter whose gender is officially unconfirmed. Poe is described as emo — hating sunlight and preferring grungy weather, staying up all night, and preferring solitude in dark places. Poe is capable of sustained flight. They appear in Chapter 4 as a hostile mini plush and were among the first Nightmare Critters to observe Pianosaurus's arrival in the Prison Utility Zone.

  41. #41Character — Touille (Nightmare Critter)

Keys: Touille, nightmare rat, trash rat, rat critter

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Touille is a grey anthropomorphic rat Nightmare Critter. His personality is chaotic and chatty — he loves to collect junk and trash, and talks endlessly about it, though most of what he says lacks real substance. He is described as a 'Trash Rodent.' He contrasts sharply with the studious Bubba Bubbaphant of the Smiling Critters. He appears in Chapter 4 as a hostile mini plush; a feral Touille plush ambushes the player in the kitchen area and later steals their Broken Gas Mask.

  42. #42Character — Maggie Mako (Nightmare Critter)

Keys: nightmare shark, maggie, shark critter, Maggie Mako

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

Maggie Mako is a turquoise anthropomorphic shark Nightmare Critter and the only aquatic member of the group. She loves sweets and unhealthy food (her defining character trait). Entry settings

The Hour of Joy was a catastrophic event that occurred on August 8, 1995, at the Playtime Co. Michigan Factory. On that date, an emergency warning was broadcast to all factory electronics ordering every employee to hide — the living toy experiments, orchestrated by The Prototype, began a factory-wide rampage.

Huggy Wuggy was the first to strike, killing employees in the Lobby. Other experiments joined the massacre: Mommy Long Legs, Miss Delight and her sisters, CatNap, Kissy Missy, Boxy Boo, the Ruined Critters, and others systematically slaughtered nearly every employee, tourist, and visitor within the building. Children in Playcare were spared and taken to The Labs. The bodies of the victims were subsequently dragged to the lower levels and used as a food source by the surviving experiments over the following years.

Leith Pierre is believed to be the only human who survived the initial massacre unharmed. The factory closed permanently after this event, leaving the surviving experiments alone inside for a decade.

  44. #44Lore — Bigger Bodies Initiative (BBI)

Keys: experiment program, toy experiments, Bigger Bodies Initiative, BBI, consciousness transfer

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Bigger Bodies Initiative (BBI) was a top-secret program run by Dr. Harley Sawyer at Playtime Co. Its goal was to transfer the consciousness of human subjects — primarily orphaned children housed in Playcare — into oversized living toy bodies. The orphans were tested through the Game Station's minigames to determine which toy form best matched their physical and cognitive traits.

Known BBI subjects include: • Marie Payne → Mommy Long Legs (Experiment 1006) • Evelyn McKabe → CatNap (Experiment 1188) • [Unknown] → Huggy Wuggy (Experiment 1170) • [Unknown] → Bobby BearHug (Experiment 1186)

The initiative was kept secret even from most high-ranking employees. Preston Willard, for example, was forced to sign multiple NDAs about Poppy without even understanding how she worked. The orphans' conversion is what transformed the toys from inert objects into the sentient, often traumatised creatures the player encounters.

  45. #45Lore — The GrabPack (tool)

Keys: grabbing device, Grab Pack, grab pack, blue hand, red hand, GrabPack

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The GrabPack is the player's essential tool throughout Poppy Playtime — a backpack-mounted device with two extending mechanical hands: a Blue Hand and a Red Hand. Each hand can: • Grab and manipulate distant objects • Conduct electricity between conductive terminals (used in many puzzles) • Launch through the air on a long cable and retract • Hook onto fixed Grapple Handles for traversal

The Blue Hand is acquired in the Security Room at the start of Chapter 1. The Red Hand is found shortly after. The GrabPack's hands are connected by an electrified wire when both are in use, which can be used offensively against enemies. Kissy Missy's safety poster in the Power Room humorously warns against hiding behind doors to scare Leith Pierre with it.

  46. #46Character — Bobby BearHug (Smiling Critter)

Keys: Bobby, bearhug, red bear smiling, Bobby BearHug, bear critter

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Bobby BearHug is a dark red anthropomorphic bear and one of the eight Smiling Critters, created by Playtime Co. in 1989. She wears a heart pendant (symbol of her loving nature) and emits a rose scent. Bobby is the most openly affectionate of the Smiling Critters — endlessly kind, caring, and warm toward everyone around her. She loves to hug and be present for her friends.

Her Bigger Body version was designated Experiment 1186. By the time the player arrives in Chapter 3, Bobby's Bigger Body counterpart is already dead — killed by CatNap for refusing to follow The Prototype. Her security statues appear in Home Sweet Home, one active and one defunct, and the player must retrieve batteries from them. Bobby never appears as a live antagonist; her death before the player's arrival makes her one of the more tragic figures of the Smiling Critters.

  47. #47Character — Bubba Bubbaphant (Smiling Critter)

Keys: bubbaphant, blue elephant smiling, elephant critter, Bubba Bubbaphant, Bubba

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Bubba Bubbaphant is a light blue anthropomorphic elephant and one of the eight Smiling Critters, created by Playtime Co. in 1989. He wears a lightbulb pendant (symbol of his intellect) and emits a lemongrass scent. Bubba is the intellectual of the group — studious, precise, and always eager to share useful knowledge. He prefers gathering real, accurate information and is the direct opposite of the gossipy Rabie Baby and the trash-collecting Touille.

In Chapter 4's Safe Haven, Bubba (along with Hoppy Hopscotch and CraftyCorn) is mistrustful of Poppy Playtime, possibly because she disappeared from the Safe Haven years before the player arrives. He is one of the surviving Smiling Critters who took refuge there after the Hour of Joy.

  48. #48Character — CraftyCorn (Smiling Critter)

Keys: crafty corn, unicorn critter, Crafty, cyan unicorn smiling, CraftyCorn

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

CraftyCorn is a white-and-cyan anthropomorphic unicorn and the only mythical creature among the eight Smiling Critters, created by Playtime Co. in 1989. She wears a rainbow flower pendant (symbol of her creativity) and emits a jasmine scent. She uses she/her pronouns. CraftyCorn is the most creative and artistically inclined of the group — she sees beauty in everything and loves sharing it through drawing, painting, writing, and any other creative outlet. She is also notably shy.

Her Bigger Body counterpart's fate is unknown but likely grim — PickyPiggy's disturbing cardboard cutout monologue in Chapter 3 mentions eating a 'flayed unicorn,' strongly implying CraftyCorn was devoured. In Chapter 4's Safe Haven, CraftyCorn is mistrustful of Poppy, alongside Bubba and Hoppy.

  49. #49Character — Hoppy Hopscotch (Smiling Critter)

Keys: rabbit critter, Hoppy, hopscotch critter, green rabbit smiling, Hoppy Hopscotch

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Hoppy Hopscotch is a bright green anthropomorphic rabbit and one of the eight Smiling Critters, created by Playtime Co. in 1989. She wears a lightning bolt pendant (symbolising her energy) and emits a peppermint scent. Hoppy is the most energetic member of the group — fast, enthusiastic, and always trying to keep her friends' spirits up. Though she can be loud and impatient, she will always slow down to match a friend's pace when they need her to.

Her Bigger Body version met a sad fate: sometime around December 15, 2004 she was killed — likely by CatNap — for refusing to follow The Prototype. In Chapter 3, mini Ruined Critter versions of her appear in the Playhouse as hostile plushies. A surviving mini Hoppy toy appeared in the Safe Haven listening to Pianosaurus's music, only to be accidentally crushed by him — the incident that led Doey to banish Pianosaurus from the Safe Haven. In Chapter 4, her surviving Bigger Body counterpart is absent, and she is mistrustful of Poppy.

  50. #50Character — KickinChicken (Smiling Critter)

Keys: KickinChicken, Kickin Chicken, yellow chicken smiling, chicken critter, Kickin

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

KickinChicken is a yellow anthropomorphic chicken and the only avian/bird member of the eight Smiling Critters, created by Playtime Co. in 1989. He wears a star pendant (symbolising his coolness) and emits an ylang-ylang scent. He uses he/him pronouns. KickinChicken is sporty, energetic, and known for his playful kicks. He brings laughter and enthusiasm to the group and is always active, making him a direct contrast to the lazy Allister Gator of the Nightmare Critters.

His Bigger Body version participated in the Hour of Joy alongside Hoppy Hopscotch and the Bigger Body Baba Chops, helping corner employee Gracie Green and drag her away to be converted into Lily Lovebraids against her will. His fate after the Hour of Joy is unclear, but like most of the Smiling Critters, he was likely killed by CatNap for refusing The Prototype's authority.
